Remember – bigots typically benefit from bigoted systems. These assholes aren’t going to educate themselves out of a sense of good will and aren’t hurt by being shamed because they think their cause is righteous.

When you can, when you feel safe, be an ambassador for change.

An additional plea to anyone who is cis, white, able-bodied, straight, or a man

The more of these that apply to you, the more I suggest that you go out of your way to explain to someone being racist, sexist, transphobic, homophobic, or fat-phobic why it’s not okay. Not because cis, white, able-bodied, straight men are the most obligated; not because cis, white, able-bodied, straight men are by default allied with these assholes; not cis, white, able-bodied, straight men are more likely to be assholes. Whether or not you feel any of those are true, the reason I implore you to consider taking action is because cis, white, able-bodied, straight men benefit the most from the existing frameworks.

The more of these that apply to you, the more important it is that they see someone who is benefiting from this fucked framework speaking out against it.

The more of these that apply to you, the safer you probably feel (and are) educating someone about their bullshit.

The more of these that apply to you, the less likely it is that your opinions will be dismissed out of hand by someone who is cis, white, able-bodied, straight, or a man.

It can be scary. It can be taxing. It’s always frustrating.
Sometimes it makes a difference.

That was Kevin’s first team call with Health 2.0. I don’t think I could have planned a better initiation. He’s been set loose on the repo, and so far I’m the only one who’s brought the site down this week. Having another dev around is already an obvious boon, but there’s clearly going to be a little bit of a learning curve (for me).

I’m not just churning out code alone anymore, so task division and code documentation (I’M A TERRIBLE DEVELOPER OKAY) just entered the picture for the first time in years. Thank god for SCRUM.

I finally made my way into the surgeon’s office this morning for a consultation. It ended in traversing his office to an operating area in the same room, getting a local, and having my underarm slit open. A rolled piece of gauze the size of my pinky left the office secured inside a hole in my armpit. Twelve hours later, I would reluctantly shower and pry it out of my arm, only to startle Kacie with pain-induced cries of “oh fuck, oh fuck, why did I wait so long?”

That said, my arm feels better bleeding under this giant bandaid than it has in weeks. Hopefully, these antibiotics will kick some ass, and I won’t have to undergo anything more serious after my followup.

As the perfect followup; here’s a recipe I decided to play around with after picking up the CSA today. Kati was IOI.

Spring Onion Tempeh

1lb Barry’s Tempeh (or whatever)

1½ cups H2O

¾ tsp Turmeric

1½ tsp Chili Powder (going to try cayenne next time)

3 tsp mirin

¾ tsp salt (way more salt went into the actual dish tonight, but this house is famous for over-salting)

				Goodies

3 tsp olive oil

3 spring onions (chop the bulbs, slice the stems into those cute circles)

6 garlic scapes (diced)

¾ tsp turmeric

¾ tsp chili powder

1½ tbsp soy sauce

Cube the tempeh and let it soak in the marinade for a bit (I went with 20 minutes, going to roll with more like an hour next time – it’s not as absorbant as tofu, especially if it’s been frozen)

Plop tempeh into wok, bring to boilish, cover and simmer until most of the marinade has burned off (10-15 minutes)

Dump your goodies into the mix. From here on out it’s pretty much an eyeball game depending on how crispy you want your tempeh – you can always start out with more oil if you want some more fry in there.

Serve over rice / noodles / whatevs. (I went with white rice with a little vegan bullion in the water; tasty trick courtesy of Ericat)

Tomorrow, I want to try and rock some vegan potato skins.

After starting work on a little script for dynamically styled titles (voila!), I decide to just pull everything to the nakedink server and work live.

Update – 20 June 2012

Added support for the
quote
format. I keep running into the conundrum of whether or not to use meta boxes for post format data. Decided on “yes!” – only because it’ll let me reorganize html structure down the line without having to edit a ton of posts.

<?php //Quotes ?>
<?php if ( has_post_format( 'quote' ) ) { ?>
    <blockquote>
        <?php echo wpautop( $format_mb->get_the_value('content') ); ?>
        <?php if ( $format_mb->get_the_value('vianame') && $format_mb->get_the_value('vialink') ) { ?>
            <small>
                <a href="<?php $format_mb->the_value('vialink'); ?>"><?php $format_mb->the_value('vianame'); ?></a>
            </small>
        <?php } else if ( $format_mb->get_the_value('vianame') ) { ?>
            <small>
                <?php $format_mb->the_value('vianame'); ?>
            </small>
        <?php } ?>
    </blockquote>
<?php } ?>

This way, if an HTML standard for quote visual quote attribution actually surfaces, I can implement it at the theme level, not the content level.
