Portrait of the Artist James Michael

A portrait to me is not only a painting of someone. A portrait of someone can be about his life too. Like those paintings, you have James Michael in his personal life and as a singer; the two together form a portrait of his life. If you added another painting of him producing an album, it would add to that portrait.

Why James Michael? My answer.. why not!!

James posted a picture on his Twitter account and I kept it for a future painting. I wanted to work on these feelings.. feeling of being tired, exhausted. Some thinks the biggest challenge on this painting was the beard.. Beard are not hard to do.. it's takes a lot of time and patience though. When I decided to make the painting, I thought my biggest challenge would be the lips. Once again I was wrong.. The biggest challenge was those cheeks *hit head on the desk*. I couldn't get the result I wanted.. Shadows not at the right place.. too dark on one side, too much lights on the other. HAAHHA

The other painting, the live one.. all started when a Facebook friend and I started talking about Crue Fest DVD. I told her there was an amazing sequence on the DVD that I wish I could get a better view so I could paint it.. Like my mind love challenges.. I gave it a shot.. so yes.. this painting is a sequence of the DVD, it's not a picture someone took **I wish**. Biggest challenge: Painting something you dont clearly see.. **OUCH my head**. I love details when I CAN see them.. so I really have to focus on painting what I see and not what it's supposed to be because yes, there's a difference between those two.

I'm really happy with the results of the paintings. :D
Definitely both were a challenge to me which was fun

This painting was done with oil a while ago. The picture was taken by my aunt Sylvie. It was a special moment and Im glad she caught it which is why I painted it. He knew there was not much time left (only 3 months to live) and he took every moment he had to enj...oy life, to look what he is accomplished, to take time with every people he loved and care about.

It's been 13 years today my father passed away. He was such a great person. He loved people, he loved having fun and it was always fun being around him, he was so gifted. I loved watching him dancing on John Fogerty, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Beach Boys and Oak Ridge Boys music. Each time I listen those artists all I can think/see is my father dance and smile big time. So funny. He was the kind of person you would like to have in your life. Im glad that I had that kind of person in my life as.. a father.

The Trews - Friends & Total Strangers CD & DVD

At the end of January 2009, The Trews were recording two shows at the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto for a CD and a DVD. I was asked if I could shoot both nights.. of course I said yes.. :D
The good news is.. my pictures end up on the cover/ booklets of both items .. How cool?!?

The Trews release this week their "Acoustic - Friends & Total Strangers" CD and DVD.
You'll find 15 songs acoustic on this CD with 2 new songs never released before "Locked Doors" and "Sing Your Heart Out".

News : The Portal Mag

Alright folks I have a news for you.

I'm sad to announced I left the incredible team of The Portal Magazine.
I really had a blast working with the Portal Magazine and I was happy to be part of this family. I never done layout magazine before, I learn all by myself and Im glad The Portal Mag give me that chance to explore a new path.. It was a great experience for me. The reason why Im leaving is I have so much on my plate that I need to leave a couple things to be able to focus on other projects. Sometimes, you need to let go things to be able to focus on something you really want to happen.

The Portal Mag wrote this about me:
" Since the day we launched, the stunning artwork has been the work of the very talented Nancy Desrosiers, whose shared vision fit in perfectly with The PORTAL’s. Our August/September issue saw the last time Ms. Desrosiers lends her talents to The PORTAL, as she has chosen to pursue other projects. This is not a “good-bye” though, more a “see you around”, as Nancy will continue to share her amazing concert photos and will forever be supportive. The entire team wish her all the success we know she will have in her future endeavours and are excited for her and the next chapter in her life. "

Oratory + Cemetery

The other day , my friends and I went for a little visit to the Oratoire St-Joseph and Notre-Dame-Des-Neiges Cemetery. The reason why I love churches so much is simply cause it's beautiful , it's peaceful and it's easy to just reconnect with yourself... no kidding.

I took some pictures during that little visit..

Saint Joseph's Oratory is a pilgrimage centre.

Here's the Oratory. You'll see there's 3 stages. Visitors can climb up to 283 steps and 99 stairs (wood) is reserved for prayer and for those pilgrims who wish to climb on their knees .
when we got there, I saw one person climbing those stairs on their knees. EACH stair those pilgrims say a prayer.

Inside the oratory, you'll find the basilica which is so beautiful. The basilica can seat up to 2,200 people. It gives you an ideas how big it is. It was so quiet in there that I was shy to take pictures. You'll find it funny but for me it was about respects. Some people were there for the curiosity of the site but also some where there to pray, to talk to their gods. While you are praying and all you can hear is : CLICK CLICK.. not respectful in my opinion. There was that huge organ .. BTW this organ was built in Germany between the years 1958 and 1959 and installed in the Oratory in 1960. Unfortunately I dont have a picture of the organ but it was huge. So with the music, I took a couple shots

Beside the basilica, in the oratory you'll find a The Votive Chapel which contains over 10,000 vigil lamps.
The bas-reliefs depict several titles attributed to Saint Joseph in the Litany of Saint Joseph: Model for Workers, Terror of Demons, Guardian of Virgins, Protector of the Church, Hope of the Sick, Patron of the Dying, Consoler of the Afflicted, and Support of Families. The chapel also contains the entrance to Brother André’s tomb and believe me or not.. his heart. Yeah no pictures..

Inside note: I don't know about my friends but I felt a little bad to not ..you know.. light up a candle for people I care about..I felt like if I didnt do it.. something would happen to them HAHHA I didnt take a chance, I put some money in and two lamps are burning for those people right now.

The Gardens of the Way of the Cross. I didnt take all the statue in pictures cause you know.. you see one and you see them all. N.B Im talking about the statues on the Way of the Cross.. not the cemetery ones

It was not that a beautiful day. we were constantly wondering if mother nature would corporate with us . We didnt ask for the big sun but just.. no rain.. so we had enough time to go to the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery. This cemetery is the largest cemetery in Canada and the third-largest in North America. Which is interesting is this cemetery has specially reserved sections for French, Italian, Greek, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese clients. You'll be able to find famous figures like Maurice Richard, Émile Nelligan, Jean-Paul Riopelle ...

I really like it but squirrel are way too friendly..

DJ Ashba painting

The reason I picked DJ Ashba and this picture is his EYES.

The color was a big challenge. It's hard to get that kind of color.
Blue-green-ish eyes are difficult in my opinion cause you dont want them to look like water or artificial eyes..
I wanted to make them look real..anyway.. as much as possible .

People thought the hardest part to do was the bandana or tattoos.. Nope..
sorry to disappoint but the hardest part was the little beard.. oh jeez...
the first time before I erased the whole thing.. it's looked like hay.. I didnt like it but after the 3rd time..
I got it.. YAY ME!

I also changed my signature.. Now on it will be Nanner..
why I changed it.. the main reason is.. the other one, everyone were thinking it was DAN.. since I dont have a clue who is Dan, I change my signature to Nanner.. Plus trust me signing a painting is nothing like signing a piece of paper so i wanted something that represent me. I got something simple with no FLA FLA (like I would say in french) meaning no artificial thing.. just plain and simple.

West Edmonton Mall

You are going to ask :
Why are you talking about the West Edmonton Mall?
It has nothing to do with music. I agree but.. BUT... I was so impressed that it's impossible to not talk able it.

For those who don't know.. that mall is North America's largest shopping and entertainment centre and Alberta's number-one tourist attraction. This mall has over 800 stores & services, over 100 eating establishments and nine world-class Parks & Attractions.. YEP.... you heard me... Parks & Attractions.. They have rides, an ice palace, a waterpark, sea lions show and it's only things I saw.

Of course I took pictures..

let me show you another angle . This boat is next to the Sea Lions show.. Before you ask.. No I didnt take pictures of those beautiful creatures. I'm against that kind of torture. Those beautiful creatures belong in their natural habitat, not in an amausement park or something like this. Anyway, back to the boat.. here's the picture.

And at some point I took a picture of this big Jester... I loved it..

My time in the West Edmonton Mall was really short but let me tell ya.. i didnt see everything.. would love to go back to see more. If you are going in Alberta, stop to Edmonton and enjoy your time.

Black Label Society

Black Label Society was in town last week for a show.
It's been a while I wanted to see them live and it finally happened.

When I got to the show, I felt like I was at a bikers club but I forgot my bike . I know I made people laughed with that tweet but that's really how I felt. There's was a lot of people, all in black .. a lot were wearing BLS shirts and some with BLS patches.. Long hair, sunglasses, rocker attitude.. people were ready to ROCK.

I need to say that Zakk Wylde is an amazing guitar player.. Wow.. you look at him play and it seem soooo easy.
There was a few kids in the room which totally blew me away to see them rock on BLS music. There was one kid who was sooo excited to see his "idol" on stage. This kid happened to go on stage and with his favorite rockstar.. Watch this video

My favorite moment of the show is Dimebag hommage. Zakk on the piano singing "The Last Goodbye" with two Dimebag banners.. it was WOW!!

I went with a friend of mine at the Old Montreal for dinner and we took a couples of nights shots..

For centuries, Montrealers and visitors have gathered here to shop, stroll, and chat, or even to offer prayers to Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours for the safe return of loved ones off at sea.

Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel
Work on the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel began in 1657 at the prompting of Marguerite Bourgeoys, Ville-Marie's first teacher and the founder of the Congrégation de Notre-Dame, a religious order. The original wooden structure was rebuilt in stone and frequently altered; its present face dates from the late 19th century. The ceiling, decorated by painter Édouard Meloche between 1886 and 1891, illustrates the life of the Virgin.

Don't quote me on this but I think it was buil in 1995 for Cirque du Soleil show, "Corteo".

I took this picture because of the colors and the reflection in the water

just in front of Pavillon Jacques cartier, there's was a bunch of daisies and when I passed in front of those ones.. I heard them calling :" Pick me , Pick me" .. I saw those two inseparable daisies.. they were there, really to be taken in pictures... I got that result

A band to add on your favorite bands list

Like I said in a previous blog on Rev Theory.. this band really kick some major ass.
I remember the feeling I got when I discovered The Trews, I got the same feeling when I first saw Rev Theory live.

When I heard Rev Theory was on the same bill as Buckcherry, Papa Roach and The Trews I was really happy but when I heard they were the first opener. now I started to worry a little bit.. Why? Cause The Trews were playing after Rev Theory and since I saw them opening for Theory of a Deadman and the fact they totally stole the show... let's say I just told the guys (The Trews) to forget songs like "Man of Two Minds".

They put on a great show.. Once again I was not disappointed even if in Edmonton the sound was terrible for them.. Three sets with high energy. Of course being the first band to play, you dont have the best quality in terms of lights... so as a photographer you keep reminding yourself that your job is not making miracle.. you give your 150% and let's see the results you can get. I'm really happy with the results..
Unfortunately David's drums were on a stand and it was hard taking pictures of him. Julien (guitar) and Rich (singer) were constantly in the dark. Only Matty (bass) and Rikki Lixx (guitar) were under the spotlights.

It's always a pleasure to shoot Rev Theory.
That's the kind of band that use the whole stage... so when you focus on one, you are missing something somewhere else guarantee.

I never met the guys before the last show which was in Medicine Hat.
It was a short meeting since I had to leave, my plane was early in the morning and I never realized Medicine Hat was like 3 hours from Calgary. They all are really nice guys including Mr Nice which is the tour manager. Those guys work really hard. I'm not saying the other bands dont work. After there sets they go out in the crowd selling their CDs, meet their fans and take the time for a picture. When the whole show is over, they go back in the crowd and do it all over again. I'm impressed with this band.
Yeah , you can say it.. Im SOLD to Rev Theory :P

Joined The Trews for 3 days

Yeah I know it's been a while I didn't update with new pictures.
I have tons Trews pictures to work on but like some of you know, I'm working on a little something so not Trews LIVE pictures for a while...
Yeah I know.. what a bummber.. sorry...

I joined The Trews for 3 days while they were on tour with Buckcherry, Papa Roach and Rev Theory.
I had an amazing time. The guys kick ass each night but honestly the best show was Edmonton (the first night). Trust me there was a lot of people..... a crowd full of energy.
You had people surfing even a girl at some point got out of the crowd with blood on her face. She left the building with emergency guys ... guess what? she was back later on in a wheel chair to not miss the show.. Hat off to you my dear.

In Edmonton after their set, they went to their merch table and I was (even the guys were) speechless how many people were waiting online to meet the guys and get stuff autographed. It was really cool. The line up was really long. Calgary was a good show and Medicine Hat.. The only thing with Medicine Hat, like the promoter told me.. only 400 people were allowed to be on the floor because of fire department rules.. so it was like no one was in the crowd. During a couple fights on the floor and all the security guys busy taking care of one situation.. people that bought seats tickets, jump on the floor to be in the crowd and went to rock their face off..

The best Trews performance was in Medicine Hat. They had a 45 minutes set and they were playing just before Buckcherry. The other nights (Edmonton and Calgary), they had a 30 minutes set playing before Papa Roach. PRoach were not playing in Medicine Hat.

I really had a great time and I met awesome people.
