European Beer Festival

There is less than 5 months to European Beer Festival in Copenhagen and the preparations are up and running. The festival will recide in the old Carlsberg production facitly in Valby (western part of Copenhagen).

Peter Klemensen

I just had the pleasure to talk with Brew master Peter Klemensen from Thisted Bryghus. His Limfjorsporter is legendary. Peter has described it as the gentleman amongst beers. A slogan that has followed the beer for several years, and still does.

I have always had an issue with smoke in beers, but have learned to love this beer.

Peter told many stories about this beer and many other beers and breweries. I guess that what it all boils down to is a recommendation to have a Limfjordsporter with Peter Klemmensen.

It took Peter seven years to perfect the recipe for the Limfjordsporter. He bought the name from the closing Urban brewery around 1986, but the beer was not released until 1997, when he decided that the right combination of malts had been found.

I'm glad he found it!

The best places to dine i Copenhagen

According to the 2008 edition of the Michelin Guide there are some pretty good places to dine in Copenhagen. With no less than 11 restaurants on the map in Copenhagen alone, the city takes a fist place in nothern Europe. Only Sweden can match Denmark with an equal 11 restaurants.

We have just had a tasting of the finalists for the best new Danish beer of 2007. We thought that Monk's Elixir from Mikeller by far is the best one.

2008 Dkr for a Carlsberg (Approx. $400)

My initial reaction: "You must be joking right?". A Carlsberg that is $400 a bottle. The beer is the new Carlsberg Vintage No. 1, and according the Calsberg it is probably the world's best and most expensive.

They are charging about $400 for a single bottle of less than a pint, 37,5 centilitre to be more exact. Brewmaster Jens Eiken says that there is only 600 bottles made and most og them will be sold through three of Copenhagen's most exclusive restaurants (Noma and Prémisse).

Jens Eiken said the beer, which weighs in at about 10,5% alcohol by volume, and is stored in Swedish French oak casks in a special place about 50 feet below Carlsberg's old brewery. I have been to the special place 50 feet below Calsberg - you would not believe the treasures stored down there. Now this new one seems to join the collection.

Tha plan is that consumers won't be returning the empties for a deposit as it is custom here in Denmark. Each bottle has a hand-stencilled label by a well-known artist. The empties are said to be worth about $100 each. Despite the hype, the beer seems to be less popular than anticipated. According to Børsen not a single one have been purchased at the restaurants.

With the missing sale at the restaurants in mind, I could conclude that we have missed our aim. I am sorry that we haven't been able to sell any, but we are not giving up. If we only can target the trend setters and celebrities in these restaurants, we will be able to alter the existing attitude towards beer.

New Danish beer of the year 2007

The Dansh Beer Entusiasts make a vote for the best new Danish beer of the year. The finalists have been found and the second round of the voting is now running.

So, without further a due, I here bring you the ten finalists:

This year there was no less than 556 candidats in the first round. Pretty good for a small country like ours. A total of 97 breweries have put new beers on the market in 2007. The x-mas beers are heavily represented as usual. Maybe we like x-mas beer a lot, or we just remember them better as voting is so close the the year end - I guess I'll never find out.

Why bother brewing craft-style in a light version?

Miller Brewing Co. will test market three new versions of Miller Lite as the brewer tries to cash in on a growing consumer preference for craft beers.

They apparently will test market the "Miller Lite Brewers Collection" in February. The three new versions of Miller Lite will be a blonde ale, an amber beer and a wheat beer - each with fewer calories and carbohydrates than a typical beer for that style.

The three new beers will target mainstream drinkers and capitalize on trends that favour light beer, greater variety of beer styles and a willingness to pay more for "higher-quality" beers.

I hope that the light-wave will miss Europe, and we keep on getting heavy beers. Heavy on quality, taste, smell, ingredients and overall experience.

If we are counting calories, I'd rather drink fewer beers, than drinking lighter versions.

Soldering your own furniture from beer cans

How about some home made metal furniture from beer cans (Aug, 1936). 420 cans has been soldered together and has produced the table and chair shown in use below. Bernard Dier of Chicago made it in ten days. I think that the construction would not last a week in my home. Are the cans empty or not. Empty ones seen way too unstable to do furniture like this.

We are in the 7th place, even though we have high taxes.

Forbes reports that: "Taxes are apparently just a small piece of the picture. When Denmark turned to higher alcohol taxes a decade ago, the result was only a limited drop in demand. The country still ranks seventh in per capita alcohol consumption worldwide, at 11.5 liters per year."

Making mead (melomel)

Making a big old batch of mead with blackberry, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry and recurrent. The honey comes from bies living in Ejby Mose.

Almost 4kg berries went into the batch right away. Now the hard part begins; the waiting. Fermentation is going on strong, and will continue for 2 months, before the bottleing and aging begins.

Pure gold!

Tuborg beats Carlsberg

It is hard to tell the difference between Tuborg and Carlsberg. The company structure lets people believe that there is no difference between the two. Having done a blind test serving 60 'wrong' beers. 30 Carlsberg served as Turborg and vice versa, I'm pretty confident that the difference in taste is also small. Despite the fact that Carlsberg is being sold in twice as many countries, Tuborg is now beating Carlsberg in amount of sold beers.

It's especially Russia that make the statistics look this way, as Tuborg has a more young and hip image in this region.

The boycut of Nørrebro Bryghus has been ruled illegal. Arbejdretten (court of work) has ruled against 3F, who accepts the decision. 3F still feels that they have good chance of winning their cause in court.

In short 3F wants the emplyees of Nørrebro Bryghus to join their union rather than the one they are in now, to give them a better mutual agreement.

A 90% increase in beer consumption

Lower taxes combined with better distribution has increased the beer consumption in India with 90 per cent since 2002. According to the local news agency, PTI, it is primarely in Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab that the increase has become apparent.

Danish Carlsberg have entered a joint venture to build a new brewery in Rajasthan. They will start brewing in 2008.

Despite the increase, India is not at place with big consumption of beer. In fact quite the opposite. On average, people in India consume less than one litre beer a year.

The union 3F is still in conflict with Nørrebro Bryghus. They want to force Nørrebro Bryghus to sign a collective bargaining deal with 3F. The stupid part is that the employees already have an agreement with Kristelig Fagbevægelse that they are quite satisfied with.

Today in the paper the employees wrote:

Dear 3F: please let us do our job

So now Kristelig Fagbevægelse are requesting that 3F:

respect other unions and their right to make collective bargaining
use their energy to get collective bargaining in workplaces that have none (appox 75% of the catering business)
to stop harressing workers, that already have collective bargaining with Kristelig Fagbevægelse

I deeply respect the unions and what they have done for the overall working environment. But with this so-called conflict 3F is inly showing off muscle and is not representing the employees at all. In fact it looks like they are fighting only on their own behalf and no one else. Shame on you.

Heimdal bankrupt

It saddens me to find out that the micro brewery Heimdal Bryghus has filed for bankruptcy. I like the beers and I like the people involved. So unless the miracle I am hoping for happens, this might be the first Danish micro brewery that will cease to exist since the beer revolution began some years ago.

Heimdal Bryghus never got to be a brick-and-mortar company. There was not yet a brewery and the beer was brewed on a couple of other smaller breweries. The company was run as a private limited company, that sold shares in the company to those interested. This sale was to finance the physical brewery at some point. I looks like that will never happen now :-(
