Bayshore Festival of the Arts at the Sugden Regional Park - Saturday, January 28 and Sunday January 29, 2012

Bayshore Cultural and Performing Arts Center is presenting the Bayshore Festival of the Arts on January 28 & 29, 2012 from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Sugden Regional Park. This will be a fun weekend of local talent, showcasing over 200 musicians and visual artists, children's activities, food vendors, and an art show by juried artists. A highlight will be the performance by the Band of the United States Air Force Reserve. Admission is free.

Casey Weston, country singer, guitarist, and finalist on NBC’s "The Voice" this season, will be the headline performer at the annual Bayshore Festival of the Arts presented by Bayshore Cultural & Performing Arts Center (CAPA) on Saturday and Sunday, January 28 and 29, from 11a.m. to 6 p.m., at Collier County’s Sugden Regional Park in Naples. Weston will perform on Saturday.

More than 250 Southwest Florida performing artists and the Band of the United States Air Force Reserve will entertain festival attendees. In addition, the Bayshore Festival of the Arts will include an art show featuring the works of juried local visual artists.

Music will alternate between two stages. Saturday’s lineup includes award-winning Seacrest High School Chorus, Irish Celtic Trio, Tir Na Nog Celtic Dancers, Paradise Coastmen Barbershop Chorus, Frontline Bluegrass, and Collier County’s pride and joy, Casey Weston.

Sunday's eclectic mix of music includes the Naples Klezmer Revival Band, Naples Concert Band, the Rebecca Richardson Quartet, the Dan Miller-Lew Del Gatto Quintet, and will close with a rousing performance by the Band of the United States Air Force Reserve from Warner Robins Air Force Base, Georgia.

Naples restaurants and food vendors will provide food and beverage for sale at the Festival.

“Bring your dancing shoes, chairs, blankets, and be prepared for two days of fabulous entertainment and inspirational art.” said Bayshore Cultural & Performing Arts Center Vice President Chellie Doepke in a news release announcing the festival and its headliners.

The Bayshore Festival of the Arts is free and open to the public. Donations are encouraged.

Florida's Drunkest Cities? Not Miami, But Old People Meccas

U.S. News and World Reports has unleashed a top ten list of America's drunkest cities. Florida dominates the list with whopping three cities on the top ten. Surely, Miami, America's nightlife capital, would make the list? Or perhaps Fort Liquordale or Ernest Hemingway's favorite booze-drenched isle of Key West?

Nope. Apparently the places doing the most drinking are boring ol' towns better known for their retirement communities then their bars.

The Palm Bay-Melbourne area comes in second in the country. 9.1 percent of the population reportedly "drinks heavily" there. Oddly, U.S. News doesn't cite the source of their numbers, but only Reno-Nevada beat out the Melbourne area.

Interestingly, 19.90 percent of residents in the area are 65 or older. Only 12.8 percent of the total U.S. population and 17.8 percent of the total Florida population is 65 or older.

Naples-Marco Island comes in seventh on the list with 8.5 percent of the population drinking heavily. An astounding 24.50 percent of people in Collier County are 65 or older.

Finally Cape Coral comes in 9th on the list with a heavy drinking rate of 8.1 percent. 19.6 percent of the population is 65 or older.

Only 13.3 percent of people in Miami-Dade are 65 or older, in case you're wondering.

We're not saying necessarily that old people love to get drunk. Perhaps a more likely explanation: the younger populations in those cities, forced to confront the specter of death and aging on a daily basis, and living in a town where there's not much going on in the ways of youth culture, have resigned themselves to a state of perpetual drunkenness.

PURE Urban Oasis Closes at Mercato, Naples - New Tenant Speculation Swirls

PURE Urban Oasis the restaurant that became a popular nightspot at The Mercato in Naples has closed their doors.

Opened in 2010, PURE was a sleek, hip expression of gourmet food that had a very lively late bar with a DJ. The atmosphere proved to be a popular option to Blue Martini or Burn by Rocky Patel, the other nightclubs at the Mercato.

The food had received critical acclaim and business remained good on the strength of the bar through two summers, but speculation is that the new tenant won’t approach the nightlife with the same format.

PURE, is gone and it would seem doubtful that they will reopen in another location as the new tenant rumors swirl that a deal with an established Naples restauranteur is eminent for the corner location that is across fro AZN and The Pub.

Unconfirmed sources have Handsome Harry’s on Third Street as the favorites to open a second location and one source called it ‘Harry’s at Mercato’.

Several inquiries have been made on the location and a rumored change in name and concept had been reported to varied sources for months but the buzz escalated in the past several weeks. The hurdles that Pure faced in past were related to noise issues with seasonal tenants but the real problem may be the facing many restaurants throughout Florida.

Many restaurant/bars are faced with lower food to alcohol sales ratios than the State of Florida requires for special restaurant licenses. It’s not unusual to see restaurants, pubs and taverns become known more for their DJ’s drink and beer specials after 9 pm and the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation is cracking down.

Audits are being ordered soon and often for ‘nightclubs’ that start as restaurants and the balance between offering competitive food prices and using the bar to carry the bills is difficult for restaurants even during seasonal peaks.
