2010 Officer Nominations Tonight!

Nominations for user group officers begin at tonight's meeting. In preparation, here are some short descriptions of the responsibilities of the three elected offices. Elections will be held at the November meeting.

President – Manages the meeting schedule and arranges for speakers. This involves working with the INETA organization, Microsoft, and other avenues of getting sponsors.

Vice-President – Manages sponsor relationships. Sponsorship is either in the form of money or products/giveaways. Many relationships are already established so it is just a matter of keeping up with them, generally via email.

Secretary – Secretary schedules officer's meetings, takes notes and sends out meeting minutes to the leadership group. The secretary also coordinates name badges and surveys at meetings.

Parallel Computing with Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework 4

I'm very happy to announce that later this month Nashville will be hosting Stephen Toub, Senior Program Manager Lead for the Parallel Computing Platform at Microsoft.

When: Monday, Oct. 26th; Food @ 6pm; Presentation @ 6:30pm
Where: Microsoft
Presentation: Parallel Computing with Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET
Framework 4
RSVP: http://nashparalleldotnet.eventbrite.com/

Please RSVP so that we can ensure we order the correct amount of food.

About Parallel Computing:

In 1965, Gordon Moore famously predicted what is now known as Moore’s Law,
an observation predicting that the number of transistors placed on an
integrated circuit would double every 18 to 24 months, which roughly
translates to increases in clock speed and microprocessor power in the same
time period. This growth in processing power and in commodity hardware,
along with emergence of the GUI, the Internet, mobile devices, and software
services, has transformed information management and personal productivity.
Each wave of new technologies has made computing more personal, social, and
mobile. Personal computing has fundamentally changed the way we work, the
way we connect, the way we learn, and the way we conduct business.

Future improvements in hardware processing power are proceeding on a new
model. Instead of deriving processing power from scaling clock speed, which
eventually increases power usage and heat emission to unmanageable levels,
chip manufacturers have begun to increase overall processing power by adding
additional CPUs, or “cores” to the microprocessor package.

With the .NET Framework today, correctly introducing concurrency and
parallelism into libraries and applications is difficult, time consuming,
and error-prone. However, as the hardware industry shifts towards multi-core
and manycore processors, the key to high-performance applications is
parallelism. The .NET Framework 4 and Visual Studio 2010 offer solutions to
help make coding, debugging, and profiling concurrent applications
significantly easier. In this talk, we’ll examine Parallel LINQ-to-Objects
(PLINQ), the Task Parallel Library (TPL), new coordination and
synchronization types, and Visual Studio tooling support in order to provide
a look at the next generation of parallel programming with .NET.

About Stephen Toub:

Stephen Toub is a Senior Program Manager Lead on the Parallel Computing
Platform team at Microsoft, where he spends his days focusing on the next
generation of programming models for concurrency. Stephen is also a
Contributing Editor for MSDN® Magazine, for which he writes the .NET Matters
column, and he’s an avid speaker at conferences like TechEd and
DevConnections. Prior to working on the Parallel Computing Platform, Stephen
designed and built enterprise applications for companies such as GE,
McGraw-Hill, BankOne, and JetBlue. He was a developer for Microsoft Outlook
as well as for the Microsoft Office Solution Accelerators. Stephen holds
degrees in computer science from Harvard University and New York University.

Directions to Microsoft:
Yes, you read the title correctly. We are looking for speakers.

We are planning to have a round of lightning talks for our November meeting (pencil in 11/12). This means we want YOU to speak.

Here's how it works. You send us a submission for a 10 minute talk on the topic of your choosing (your favorite framework, a demo of a cool development product, things you think all developers should know, why you are the best developer in Nashville, etc), and we will pick the most interesting 6 talks from the group. Then, during our November meeting, we will give each selected presenter 10 minutes in front of the group to speak.

If you have an idea, don't be shy. Just shoot an email to me (evan at evanhoff dot com) with a quick note including a title for your talk and a couple of sentences describing the content.
