Shane Untamed: The Lost Jungle

In this episode of "Perilous Journeys," host Marsh Mokhtari must overcome dangerous obstacles and avoid encounters with violent Columbian guerrilla fighters as he travels to one of the last wild frontiers in the world: Panamas legendary Darien Gap. He begins his journey on the Caribbean coast in the village of Carti. From there, Mokhtari drives 30 miles (48 kilometers) through hilly jungle terrain on one of the worst roads in the entire country. Its the rainy season so he risks getting stuck in the mud and being stranded in the middle of the rainforest. After three grueling hours of driving through rocky terrain, Mokhtari turns onto the Pan-American Highway. From here, its 128 miles (206 kilometers) to the Darien Gap. But to get there, he must dodge enormous potholes and traverse torn-up sections of the roadway. He also must pass through tense police checkpoints. The Pan-American Highway only goes as far as the town of Yaviza. Here Mokhtari leaves his vehicle and heads out on foot into the Darien. This dense rainforest is a haven for FARC guerillas and drug runners. As Mokhtari treks through this jungle landscape he keeps a keen eye out for any members of these dangerous groups. To complete his journey, Mokhtari travels on the crocodile-infested Chucunaque River. If all goes well, he will reach the indigenous Embera village of Mercadeo before nightfall.

In 2005, 33 year old Quawntay Adams is transferred to a maximum security jail in Alton, Illinois. Adams is regarded as a high risk category inmate due his repeated escape attempts; but the 'state of the art' facility at Alton will be more than a match for this modern day Houdini. His single cell is a prefabricated quarter inch steel box located on the first floor. He is constantly monitored by security cameras, and prison guards conduct a cell inspection every 30 minutes. But what the facility at Alton didn't anticipate is that Adams has nothing to lose. Despite the security he manages to smuggle in a hacksaw blade and cut a hole in the ceiling of his cell. He escapes through a ventilation shaft, where an unwitting female accomplice waits for him. Now on the run he's hunted down by US Marshals…….. and Adam's ingenuity eventually fails him.

This is the story of how safecracker Nuno Pontes masterminded a daring escape from a maximum security prison, told in his own words. In scenes reminiscent of the film The Great Escape, Pontes and five inmates outfoxed prison guards for months to successfully construct a tunnel under the prison wall. However their freedom was short-lived. A drugs overdose, a dramatic car chase and a tense armed stand-off resulted in all six fugitives being put back behind bars. The programme features the testimony of two of the escapees, a prison employee, and the law enforcement agents who helped track the escapees down

Natgeo Select: Don't Tell My Mother: Russia

Russia, is the land of Vodka, spies, Kalishnikovs, and bitter winters, or so the the stereotype goes. But this massive country spanning nine time zones can not be defined so easily. Since the end of the cold war, this country, the biggest in the world has gone through some really big changes. Bread lines and gulags have given way to traffic jams of luxury cars and shopping malls... the struggle to survive has been replaced by the desire to thrive. And in this new era, Russians have found some very unique and at times bizarre ways to make their way in the Motherland. In "Don't Tell My Mother I am In Russia," Diego will fly through ferocious forest fires, meet some gun-slinging school girls, and explore the steppes astride a camel as he takes you takes you on a wild ride from the materialistic riches of Moscow all the way to the silent spiritualism of Siberia. It is a an adventure not to be missed.

Wild Russia: Kamchatka

Located on Russia's far eastern edge is the stark peninsula of Kamchatka - a surprising place where volcanoes create a land of fire and ice. Thriving in this tumultuous area, golden eagles and Steller's sea eagles share in the spoils of Lake Kuril. These giant birds of prey engage in a spectacular battle royale over their kill. In Kamchatka's lush, steamy valleys, brown bears feast on the annual salmon spawn, and take a dip in a bubbling, geothermal cauldron of hot steam and lively waters. When the salmon return to Lake Kuril, brown bears warily watch each other as they line the lake's volcanic banks to catch their fill. Also in Kamchatka, red foxes take their first steps outside their den, snow sheep keep a watchful eye on the skies against an aerial attack and wolverines scavenge the countryside for meat. But Kamchatka's active volcanoes continually transform the region; not long ago, a massive landslide engulfed the green valley with 4.5 million cubic metres of rock, gravel and snow.

Wild Russia: The Arctic

At the roof of the world and on the edge of civilization sits the Russian Arctic, known for its extreme temperatures, weather and hostility. A haven for polar bears, as many as 500 pregnant females make their dens on Wrangel and Herald islands. Wrangel Island also attracts the world's largest population of walruses. One walrus segregated from the herd provides a feast for a few lucky bears. In late August, massive muskoxen bulls gather together to compete for mating dominance. Each bull can weigh 400 kilograms and charge at a speed of 40 kilometres an hour; a head-to-head impact can be heard more than a kilometre away. Meanwhile, the high Arctic's lemming population has crashed this year, and it is taking a significant toll on other creatures. Arctic foxes struggle to feed their litters while a snowy owl can only watch as her underdeveloped youngster succumbs to malnourishment. In the Russian Arctic, biting cold and howling storms lay down nature's harsh rules.

Caught Barehanded

Since man’s earliest days, he’s fished for food, sport and survival. For most, the tools are rod and reel, spear and net. But for some, it’s personal. To catch whopper fish, they use extraordinary bait. Their own bodies. Nothing more than fingers, hands, even whole arms. Noodling. Tickling. Grabblin or hoggin. Whatever you call it, it’s catfish wrangling. For these obsessed anglers, handfishing’s the toughest test of strength and endurance. Dedicated and determined, they carry on traditions old and new of mad melees between man and fish, from the oceans off Papua New Guinea to Sardinia’s Mediterranean shores to the depths of America’s swampland.
