This hymn was written by Nathan Howe in the week from August 15 to August 22, 2006. Designed to encourage appreciation of the Temple, it was composed in response to a challenge from David Macfarlane.

The PDF melody with guitar chords was created in response to a request from a site visitor (see the comments below).  The chords are not the same as the SATB version, so the guitar part is not compatible with the choral version of this hymn.

Over the past week, I have received messages from several people who performed Resurrection Hymn this past Sunday for Easter.  I am grateful for your willingness to use my music.  It is humbling to have so many excellent musicians bringing my music to life, including my own Ward Choir.

Resurrection Hymn is available in vocal solo, SAB, SSA, and TBB arrangements.  The SATB version will be available soon.  Again, thank you all for making Resurrection Hymn one of the most performed pieces I’ve written.

Nathan Howe’s award-winning vocal solo Resurrection Hymn has now been arranged for three-part mixed voices (SAB).

This piece was written for use in a sacrament meeting on Easter of 2010. The song was subsequently revised and performed for “Reflections on Christ,” a Good Friday cultural event sponsored by the Loveland, Colorado Stake in 2011. It is a musical testimony that through the Atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we will all one day be resurrected and stand before God in the flesh. Also, the song affirms that because of the sacrifice of Christ, we may be comforted and healed through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Martin Prachař contacted me a few weeks ago to inquire about providing Czech language translations of a couple of arrangements from NathanHoweMusic.com. Since then, he has not only provided translated sheet music for the SSA version of Father in Heaven, but he has also made a beautiful instrumental mp3 of it.  He has also created rehearsal mp3s of the individual parts.  See all his work on this song here.

Martin has also created a lovely instrumental mp3 for Abide with Me (available here), and he has posted Czech translations of pieces by several other LDS composers on his website.  If you don’t know how to read Czech, you might use Google Translate to explore his site.

This hymn, loved for generations, was arranged for piano, flute, and women’s voices by Nathan Howe at the request of the woman who would eventually become his wife. It was sung at a fireside in preparation for a pioneer trek activity at Martin’s Cove, Wyoming.

This newly-arranged version is appropriate for Primary children and other singers with limited range, or who need more support from the piano.  Promises was written for the baptism of our niece Zoey. It describes our relationship with the Savior by discussing what we promise him, and what he promises us in return.

Promises was originally written as a vocal solo with piano. At the 2011 Church Music Festival on Temple Square, it was performed by a wonderful chorus of Primary children. This inspired me to write this simplified arrangement, more suitable for inexperienced soloists or groups, especially groups of Primary children or youth.

Here is a summary of the differences between the original and the simplified version:

• In the original version, the piano does not usually follow the melody line, while in the simplified version, the piano plays every note that is sung.
• Some rhythms have been simplified, including many of the syncopated passages.
• The low B has been omitted in the simplified version.
• In the simplified piano part, all reaches beyond one octave have been eliminated, and several tricky passages have been reworked for easier playing.
• The simplified score fits on 3 pages, while the original uses 4.

A Quick Note

Some pieces of sheet music take a lot more time and effort than others. Promises took a longer time because it essentially had to be written twice in order to make the simplified version. This hymn is a prayer for peace in the world and in our hearts. Nathan Howe’s women’s choir arrangement from 2007 has been updated and adapted for SATB mixed choir.  It features natural voice leading and shimmering chords.

For choirs that are not up for the challenge of singing this arrangement a cappella, piano or organ may double the vocal parts quite naturally.

This piece was written for a good friend in Berkeley, NSW Australia in 2003. The three verses are four-line stanzas of a sonnet describing the relationship of the believer with Christ, while the refrain is the final two-line prayer:

O Father, wilt Thou help me to endure
The fire that will refine and make me pure!

This hymn was written to address discouragement and depression with the light Christ can bring.
