The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) are back.

Not the Drive & Survive weekly motoring tips from Simon Elstow (though we love you, Simon, see you on Thursday!) – rather, the hard-hitting Old Testament IAM. The ones who scour the calendar for some kind of event, celebration or holiday who, upon finding one, proceed to warn us of the grave dangers facing motorists at said time of year.

They’re here now to warn us of the dangers of Valentine’s day motoring – and I simply couldn’t be happier.

IAM director of policy Neil Greig says: “Everyone should look after their loved ones, especially on Valentine’s day. Research shows that one in five occupants killed in crashes were not wearing seatbelts. That’s more than 300 preventable deaths a year.

“That’s why we are asking drivers and passengers to make sure everyone is buckled up this Valentine’s Day, especially the young men. There’s no greater passion killer than a car crash. Belt up in the front and the back.”

Here are the IAM’s six best “buckle-up tips”:

1. Drivers, tell your passengers to wear their seatbelts, and passengers, return the favour.

2. Always wear a seat belt, even on short journeys.

3. Don’t let extra people in without belts or let them share the same belt.

4. Check your headrest. It should be level with the top of your head.

5. Make sure all passengers are belted up before setting off. Check children yourself, and ensure that they don’t undo or slip out of seatbelts. Children up to 135cm tall need a suitable restraint.

6. If you are pregnant wear the lap restraint under your bump.

Brilliant.

Well, it was always going to happen. It seems that snowfall – and all the accompanying chaos – is now and forever to be a staple of UK winters.

Luckily, though, this year we got off comparatively lightly.

Anyone who suffered from a fractured leg, a crushed bumper or a case of the sniffles might have something to say about that, but consider how already it’s warming up, and as early as Sunday morning the snow had begun to melt.

This is nothing like as bad as the previous few winters where the snow came as part of a long cold snap. This year, the sudden melting will lead to a lot less lethal ice. This, in turn, will lead to a lot less headaches all round.

Nonetheless, the weekend’s snow caused no less than 24 separate traffic jams of three or more hours across the country.

Thanks to TomTom, we have a top ten list of the worst areas of snow-based chaos in the country.

Coming out on top was the M11 from London to Cambridgeshire. Anyone caught in the delay of seven and a quarter hours on Sunday morning will have a lot to say about my “comparatively lightly” hypothesis.

The M40 in Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire/Warwickshire, though, came out worst overall. It features three times in the list of ten black spots, with delays of up to seven hours peaking at around midnight on Saturday.
