Are Infiniti the most interesting of car manufacturers, or the most pretentious?

Let’s weigh up the evidence that stands before us: Their latest press release.

It’s titled “Infiniti’s next inspired performance comes from a new direction”. It contains such sentences as “Mid-ship layout for optimal weight distribution, at the same time facilitating a change in vocabulary for Infiniti’s design language.” However, beyond that, as per, information is scant at best. The car in question doesn’t even have a name yet.

Awful, awful teases.

Anyway, this concerns an “advanced sports car concept” which is due for unveiling at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. It’s apparently “lightweight” with the “offer of low emissions” (offer of?) – and it seems that it will be the “first Infiniti to have not only a range-extender drivetrain but also one mounted in a mid-ship package for optimal weight distribution and therefore handling.”

OK.

Yes yes, I suppose that is quite intriguing.

But you know what? We’ll just have to wait before they show their hand.

Those devious fiends at Infiniti – the performance automotive brand from Japan – have tricked us. No, not you. Us. Those who pay our bills through writing about cars. Yeah, us. The journalists of the motoring industry. Hello!

Yeah. Their press and VIP fleet came with a Music Box hard drive. Having been returned, Infiniti have revealed just what sounds were recorded onto these devices in order to create the “Infiniti Music Chart” which “provides a unique insight into writers’ in-car music taste.”

Is anybody interested in this? No? No. I’ll continue, though.

According to Infiniti, “the list spans the decades and embraces every style, from Creedence Clearwater Revival to Jamie Cullum, and Steely Dan to Lady Gaga. Classics, old favourites and the, er, more challenging tunes from Europe’s annual song competition all feature.”

Oh, the shame. Luckily, though, only the music and not the listener’s name was recorded.

I’m sure, though, that there were some who would actually have wanted their name to be revealed. In fact, I’m convinced that somewhere out there is a journalist who was tasked with test-driving an Infiniti. Right now he’s saying to whoever will listen – “See that Deerhoof and Deerhunter and Wolf Eyes and Wolf People? That was me. That was me.”

I know I would.

Infiniti are insisting that, in many ways, the musical choices of the journalists reflect the quality of the cars. They think it’s telling that someone should listen to Tina Turner’s “Simply The Best” whilst driving the Infiniti 390PS FX crossover. Similarly, the numerous plays of Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough” in the EX coupé crossover was described as “equally appropriate”.

Then there’s “It’s My Life” by Sash – which proved a hit in the M Saloon – whereas the G Coupé was treated to repeat plays of The Beatles’ White Album. Diz Watson’s “Saturday Night Boogie Woogie Man” rocked the main stage on the G Convertible’s Bose sound system, whilst the M Hybrid featured the laid-back, summery sounds of Paul Simon – specifically “You Can Call Me Al”.

Says Wayne Bruce (FANTASTIC name), Infinit’s Communications Director: “Infiniti’s sound engineers are involved in a car’s design from the start and every speaker is strategically located. So it’s gratifying that our media give an Infiniti’s music system as much of a test as its engine. And Katy Perry can be very testing. I must stress this exercise was done anonymously. So we will never know who played, for example, the Eurovision Song Contest 2007. It’s just a mystery why they chose it. Everyone knows that 1996 was the best year. If only for Gina G…”

BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz better watch out, there’s a new kid on the block muscling in on the luxury executive saloon sector. And the name is Infiniti…

OK, so maybe that’s a little dramatic and Infiniti aren’t quite so new considering they’ve been producing luxury cars since November 1989… but the luxury division of Nissan Motors is getting ready to take over the European market. And how do you cause a stir in the world of the big brands? You create a stunning new flagship saloon of course. Enter the Infiniti M37 Saloon…

The new Infiniti M37 Saloon boasts a striking design (inspired by the 2009 Essence concept), powerful V6 engine, well equipped interior and five different trim grades to appeal to every business exec. The new model is available exclusively from Infiniti’s Centre in Reading, Berkshire with prices starting from £35,150, rising to £45,000 for the top-of-the-range model.

So, what does the M37 offer over the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8 and Mercedes S Class? Well Infiniti boasts that the new M37 saloon offers athletic and sporty looks, a powerful 316bhp 3.7-litre engine petrol engine and Infiniti’s biggest and best-appointed interior yet. The Japanese automaker is also so confident that the new M37 will be so successful that two new models – a M30D diesel and hybrid M35h – have been already planned for release later in the year.

Infiniti claim that the M37 is their most technological advanced car yet with a comprehensive list of electronic driver aids. The Premium models (which are expected to be the biggest sellers) also boast Safety Shield – the world’s first Blind Spot Intervention-  Active Noise Control and Forest Air – a climate control system that recreates subtle scents and gentle breeze to relieve stress.

The new M37 comes in five different trim options including the M37S, GT and S. The entry level model includes 7-speed automatic transmission, bi-Xenon headlights, 10-power front seats, reversing camera, hard disk drive (HDD) sound system and Infiniti’s new Drive Mode Selector as standard. Higher spec trims include 20’’ alloy wheels, 16-speaker Bose sound system and Connectivi+ information and entertainment platform.

On the road prices for the new Infiniti M37 Saloon start from £35,150. Three new Infiniti Centres are also due to open in Central London, Birmingham and Glasgow before the end of the year.
