Utilising home interior passions, smart have introduced the new smart fortwo BoConcept edition

With more than a passing nod to the home interior passions of the discerning consumer, smart have introduced the new smart fortwo BoConcept edition, produced in conjunction with ace Danish urban interior design specialist, BoConcept.

And that nod looks at all those things that you thought that you would only see on Grand Designs like matt surfaces, distinctive colours and bold material combinations, meaning the limited edition model will be joining some of the most-sought after properties on the must-have list.

The smart fortwo BoConcept edition features matt crystal white body panels, light lemon mirror caps, BoConcept logos in the mirror triangles, and accents on the 15”nine-spoke alloy wheels; all meaning, of course, that there is no doubt that this is a car that you would WANT to be seen and in as well as being the car TO be seen in because there is no mistaking its Danish design credentials.

Gary Savage, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars said: “It’s testament to the strength of the collaboration between smart and BoConcept that this new edition has evolved, as it provides a stylish mix of contemporary design and style for urban living.”

And while we are on the subject of living (see what I did there?), you can take a quick tour inside and see the unique tobacco brown leather-look seats with grey quilted fabric inlays and light lemon double stitching; the same colour-styled dashboard, door panels and kneepad, and a two-spoke racing style leather steering wheel also with matching light lemon double stitching.

There is no doubting that the smart fortwo BoConcept is in with a shot of becoming a style icon all on its own without the help of the availability of two bodystyles (coupé and cabrio), highline multimedia and navigation system with 6.5-inch touch-screen, Bluetooth, iPod interface, CD/DVD player, air conditioning and electric windows all as standard.

And we should ask the question of this is the first ever car to influence a range of interior furnishings that could grace any home with smartness and style far beyond anything that you may have at the moment?

Because BoConcept have, in conjunction with smart, released a home collection that reflects the colour scheme and materials of the smart fortwo BoConcept edition. We are talking about a sofa that has been made to the exact same compact measurements of a smart fortwo (2.69 metres), a lounge chair that resembles (or at least contains many of the elements of) a car seat, and a modern looking coffee table.

There are even accessories such as smartville tableware and special cushions that you can buy to remind you of your car; even a table clock that resembles the one in the cockpit of the smart fortwo BoConcept.

In fact, you will feel like you live in your car 24/7!

Normally noted and revered for their two-seater cars, SMART will unveil its four-seat Fourjoy concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show that starts on Tuesday and lasts until September 22nd.

“The Smart Fourjoy is the perfect icon of our Smart design philosophy that is being carried into a new era. For the first time we are showing the future sporty four-seater character of the new Smart family,” says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “The typical Smart silhouette, the clear lines and styling and also the further development of the smart face make this study a modern design icon.”

Enjoying the genes created in the original Smart car, the Fourjoy is compact with a length of just under 3.5 metres meaning a tight turning circle of 9.1 metres – ideal for city living and driving. Naturally it is a battery powered car driving a 55 kW magneto-electric motor housed in the back with zero emissions that charges in less than an hour using the 22 kW on-board charger and a rapid charging cable, or 7 hours overnight on a household socket or charging station.

It has a bit more than a nod to the original in its design, when it comes to extremely short overhangs, wheels positioning on the four most outer points, tail lights integrated in the sturdy tridion cell and the spherical instrument cluster. But there is no doubt that the car is more grown-up than what was considered an adult child’s toy when it was first launched; a fact emphasised by the pearlescent white on the bumpers, front bonnet and tailgate which make it into a ‘real’ car!

For lovers of the open air, the Fourjoy has no windows, no door and no roof – something that smart suggest ‘brings the city inside’; so in essence it is practically the original Smart car with a rear bench seat organically designed and sculptured to offer lounge comfort to an extra two passengers. It even looks good with dark chrome along the back.

The solid instrument panel is designed in a striking multidimensional honeycomb structure and made of transparent, illuminated plexiglass reminiscent of the original smart with two smartphones mounted on the dashboard and on the centre tunnel at the rear. Cutting-edge to the fore!

Safety is still evident though in the shape of the extremely pronounced and polished full-aluminium Tridion safety cell that is a trademark of all Smart models along with transparent plastic panels to deflect the wind for the windscreen and door pillars.

Dr Annette Winkler, Head of smart, says: “The smart fourjoy is a study that successfully translates the unique design and the urban driving fun of the smart fortwo to an extremely compact four-seater. Numerous details of previous show cars that received very positive feedback have been incorporated in the fourjoy. The exterior proportions already reveal a lot about the appearance of our four-seater production smart which will be launched at the end of 2014 and will also enable families to travel together in a smart.”

Just in case you think that smart have lost all the fun out of the cars, attached to the roof are two longboards. These electrically driven skateboards can be taken off, the helmets that are stored under the rear seats can be taken out (along with the removable high-definition camera that is there) and the final mile or so can be covered with just as much consideration to the environment – and you’ll be able to share the journey on social networks courtesy of the camera.

Who said there was no fun in city driving anymore?

Nationwide Vehicle Contracts is pleased to announce great savings across the range of Smart Cabriolets that we have on offer. With reductions of up to £62 a month, lease rates now start from only £124.95 + VAT…

Compact, quirky and cheap to run; the Smart Cabriolet is the perfect choice for inner city dwellers. Incorporating a fabric roof that folds quickly down, you can make the most of sunny spells however short-lived they may or may not be!

Despite measuring up at less than 2.5 metres long, the Smart Cabriolet makes the most of available interior space. There is plenty of leg, head and shoulder room for driver and passenger and the seats offer a decent level of support. Built up of high quality materials, the cabin is a pleasant place to be and good insulation against external noise makes it comfortable on longer journeys.

Since the electronically sliding fabric roof needn’t be locked in its final position, there is little compromise when it comes to luggage space. A 220 litre boot capacity is generous enough to meet the needs of most urban drivers and places the cabriolet besides its coupe sister in terms of practicality.

We think a deal worth snapping up is on the Smart Cabriolet Passion mhd Softouch Auto, available to lease from as little as £134.95 + VAT…

With CO2 emissions amounting to only 100g/km and fuel consumption figures equal to 64.2MPG, this petrol model stands up well against diesel competitors.

Levels of equipment on the Passion mhd Softouch Auto are generous, with the following items of specification featured as standard:

Pioneer Touch Screen Navigation System with radio/ CD/DVD, Bluetooth, i-Pod and USB connectivity;

Auto air conditioning with pollen filter;

SOFTOUCH automatic gear programme;

15” 9 spoke alloy wheels.

Image courtesy of graur razvan ionut / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

What and Where To Drive to Avoid Accidents

The UK’s number one comparison site, MoneySupermarket.com, has taken time away from helping people be ‘so moneysupermarket’ to look at over 13 million car insurance quotes, and has found out which car manufacturer (in a study of the top 35 favourite brands) makes the cars that have fewer insurance claims made for ‘at fault’ reasons – and the result may surprise you.

Subaru has an image of being a brand for boy racers; well, if it is, those boy racers are driving very carefully because they are top (or bottom of the list depending on your view) when it comes to fewest number of claims with 62.9 claims per thousand drivers, followed by Smart and Fiat with 63.1 and 66.6 respectively. In fact, the boy racer tag shouldn’t be attached anymore because the study also showed that the Subaru drivers, primarily of the popular Impreza model, are more likely to be in their thirties and forties rather than the young and deadly (Maybe they are ex-Boy racers, now grown-up and sensible?) And at that age they are more likely to look after their car-based pride and joy.

Even the experts at MoneySupermarket were surprised. “A turn up for the motoring books!” said Peter Harrison, one of the car insurance experts there. “The Subaru is shedding its image of a car for pure petrol heads, and is actually being driven by older, safer drivers instead of the ‘drive it like they stole it’ younger motoring generation.”

So does this mean that a Subaru is a lot cheaper to insure than other cars? NOPE!

Peter Harrison again: “Interestingly, though, the fact that Subaru drivers are least likely to make a claim, doesn’t directly translate into them paying the cheapest premiums. While claims are one factor insurers take into account when setting premium prices, other factors also play a part. These include the engine size, the number of miles you clock up, where you park, and your profession amongst other things. Smaller cars are generally cheaper to insure as the cost of repairs and parts are likely to be lower than those on more premium models. If you want to pay less for car insurance, it is worth considering these factors when choosing your motor as this will help reduce the overall cost of running a car.”

Maybe this is why cars like the Fiat Cinquecento has lower premiums than the Subaru Impreza – or maybe because when it comes to individual cars, that is the car least likely to be claimed for? (Or are people too embarrassed to admit to driving the same car as one of The Inbetweeners?)

As Peter Harrison said, it’s not the claim rate that determines the premium; there are other factors. Here’s Neil Greig, director of policy at The Institute of Advanced Motorists: “Noisy hatchbacks done up in dubious taste might not be easy on the eye but they are often looked after with tender love and care by their doting owners. From Audi to Volvo the best drivers take care of their driving and their cars because they know crashes will cost them in terms of higher premiums and ultimately second hand value.”

Obviously, the research wasn’t good news for every car maker – someone had to be bottom of the pile, and it’s a proverbial slap on the wrist for SEAT, KIA and MINI who take the top three places ahead of Honda and Mazda in 4th and 5th place. It should be noted that they are all quite close when it comes to claims per thousand drivers (94.1 for SEAT to 88.8 for Mazda.)

“Being involved in a motor accident, however severe and whether you are at fault or not, can be a very traumatic and costly experience,” says Peter Harrison. “Claiming for either an ‘at fault’ or ‘not at fault’ accident will have an impact on the cost of your car insurance premiums. Our research shows the average claim value for an ‘at fault’ accident is £3,025, and these types of claims represent more than half of all those registered on the site. Whether you own a Subaru or a Seat, it is worth remembering that car insurance prices vary considerably, so it is important to shop around and get the best deal that meets your requirement.”

Speaking of shopping around, be careful when you are out shopping or just driving in Watford because that is the area that has the most claims per thousand drivers with 180 claims per ‘000. And it is in the south of England – and NOT in inner London I should add – that lay claim to the remainder of the Top Five with

Hemel Hempstead, Chelmsford, St Albans and Enfield completing the list; all of them in some way connected to London in some way be it a commuter town or an overspill area.

Pete Harrison again: “Living in a commuter town like Watford or Hemel Hempstead will have an impact on the level of the car insurance premium you will pay. Heavily congested areas, particularly around key commuter routes such as Greater London mean statistically you are more likely to make a claim. Regardless of whether motorists are making the most of an open motorway, or are bumper to bumper on the daily commute, they should always be vigilant of their own driving and that of those around them.”

A comment slightly contradicted by the fact that drivers in East London come 2nd in the list of lowest claimers (with Hull at the top with a claim rate of 110.6) but the fact that this is closely followed by drivers in Welsh community Llandrindod Wells, Cornish City Truro, and Scottish town Falkirk maybe suggest that that is just a blip.

So it would make sense to drive a Subaru in Hull, a Fiat Cinquecento in East London, an Austin Mini in Truro or a Ford Ka in Falkirk than a Ford S Max in Watford, a Volvo XC90 in Hemel Hempstead or an Alfa Romeo Brera in Enfield, if you want to avoid claims.

But be aware that, as Peter Harrison says, “…even if an accident isn’t your fault, and you make a claim on another driver’s insurance policy, your own premiums can still go up. All accidents you are involved in must be reported to your insurer, whether or not they were caused by you. If you’ve recently been involved in an accident, your provider will assess you as being more likely to be in an accident in the future and will push up your premiums at renewal, making it essential to shop around for a better deal at renewal time.”

car2go is stunningly simple and does pretty much what it says on the tin; fully-flexible and an on-demand car sharing scheme...

Smart thinking in the second city

Daimler and Europcar have combined to create a car sharing service that environmentally-friendly smart fortwo vehicles that customers can use over an area of 21 square miles.

Starting in Birmingham with 250 of the electric beauties, the whole idea behind car2go is stunningly simple and does pretty much what it says on the tin; fully-flexible and an on-demand car sharing scheme that is easy to use, easy on the pocket, and easy on the environment. As car2go say, they are: “the future of Urban Mobility.”

“We are proud to launch car2go in Birmingham,” said Stefan Mueller, CEO at car2go Europe GmbH. “car2go gives you the ability to go where you want, when you want – and in comfort – but without all the costs associated with owning, running and insuring a car full-time. We’re confident everyone will find car2go an easy, cost-effective and environmentally responsible way to get around Birmingham.”

It didn’t take long for the politicians to get involved. Councillor Tahir Ali, cabinet member for development, jobs and skills, who was involved in the actual launch of the 12 month pilot scheme, said: “We want to develop a range of green transport initiatives, reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions and encouraging people to think of alternative ways of getting about. I’m pleased to welcome car2go to Birmingham, particularly as they are making the city their UK headquarters, with the associated jobs that will bring. I will be monitoring this pilot closely for all the benefits it is expected to bring.”

The 250 cars are situated in what they have innovatively called the ‘car2go zone’ and, for those of you that know Birmingham this covers the city area between Oxhill Rd, Pershore Rd, Vicarage Rd, Highfield Rd, City Rd, Grove Park, Stratford Rd, and Aston Park. For those of us that don’t, you will have skipped that sentence and will now find out that in the area, people can park in any Pay & Display bay without time restrictions and wherever it is free to park without affecting private resident or business parking.

In Birmingham City Centre, there is already a well-established public transport bus, train and Metro system but the idea of this is that car2go will help commuters with the last bit of their journey whilst at the same time keeping both congestion and pollution in the city down.

The car2go car itself is based on the smart mhd – “an efficient, compact two-seater which emits just 98g/km of CO2, plus the convenience of automatic transmission, start-stop technology, GPS navigation and the comfort of air conditioning.” Easy to drive, it’s very easy to manoeuvre in the city which means easy to park, practical, and perfect for those spaces where you think “Will I get in there?”

Marcus Breitschwerdt, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK Ltd, added: “I’m delighted that car2go has chosen Birmingham as its second UK city. Our smarts all have eco stop-start, automatic transmission, air conditioning, GPS navigation, are fuelled, insured and cleaned and are available 24/7. You don’t even have to pay for parking if you park in any pay and display without affecting residents and businesses – car2go has got that covered too. Of course, car2go is all about making mobility easy, so anyone registered as a car2go member in London or Birmingham can use the service in either city.”

For more information, go to www.car2go.com/Birmingham where you can register and book as well as find all the information that you need.

“Poetry is one of the purest expressions of linguistic freedom. It is a component of the identity of peoples and it embodies the creative energy of culture, for it can be continuously renewed”.

Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, message for World Poetry Day

Here’s a Blog that’s here to say, today we celebrate World Poetry Day.

Yes, my friends, it’s really time to speak about cars and vans in rhyme.

Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin, driving in a scene you want a part in.

BMW, Bentley, Audi; cars driven by rich men working in Saudi.

Chevrolet, Chrysler, Fiat and Ford; beautiful cars then “Oh my Gawd”

Eyes full of tears and dreams so starry as we look in wonder at a Ferrari.

Citroen, Dodge, Fiat and Honda; Jaguar cars to make you wonder

How much you’d need to be able to buy, and maybe settle for a Hyundai.

Infiniti, Isuzu, Kia and Jeep; a Lamborghini just to keep.

Land Rover, Lexus, Maserati; maybe a Lotus and time to party.

Mazda; a Mercedes if you want to be top of the shop, or an MG.

Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot and Skoda; then save for a Porsche for when you’re older.

No chance of that really, a Mini more like, or a Seat, or Smart car, or maybe a bike.

A bit French is the Renault; well, more than a bit, and you get a Rolls-Royce when you think that you’re IT.

A Saab or a Vauxhall in red, back or blue; Toyota, a Volvo or a Subaru.

Suzuki, Volkswagen (or as we say VW), and the reliable Volvo so the service won’t trouble you.

All yours to be, ready to be abused; from new off the forecourt to an auction for used.

Or maybe from worries you want some release? How about getting a car on a lease?

No more dodgy bills from your partner you hide. Give us a call here at Nationwide.

We’re friendly, efficient and you’ll get a good deal. Worried? Well don’t be. I promise you will.

All sorts of cars to all sorts of vans; Don’t think you can afford it?; we’ll help so you can.

So give us a call on World Poetry Day.

And it won’t be long before you’re driving away.

Happy Red Nose Day, everyone! That’s right. It’s Comic Relief – the funniest night of the year! Yes, people...

Happy Red Nose Day, everyone!

That’s right. It’s Comic Relief – the funniest night of the year!

Yes, people all over the country are currently doing all manner of silly things in the name of charity. Comic Relief donates to a staggering number of good causes, so why not join in?

And since you’re reading this, let’s assume you own a car.

So let’s look at some ways you can use your car to help raise money for Comic Relief.

5. Sponsored Stuffing

A classic student jape is to see how many people you can stuff into a single car. The smaller the car, the higher the stakes, and the smallest car I can think of is the Smart Fortwo. The name of the car itself makes it explicit that it was only designed for two people. And with a scant 200 litres of boot space, squeezing in any more than three people is a bonus. So how about for every subsequent person crammed inside beyond the threshold of three, you encourage people to sponsor you £10?

4. Sponsored Road Trip

A few years ago, the boys of The Inbetweeners went on a sponsored road trip for Comic Relief. There mission was to find as many rude place names as they could. With hilarious consequences! But if that’s not your bag, why not draw from the classics? A sponsored drive to Paris, for instance. Or the old Lands End – John O’Groats jaunt. What larks will be had!

3. Sponsored Touching

This is a sort of variation on the sponsored stuffing, but this time all remain on the outside of the car. The idea is that you have to touch a car for as long as you can. The moment you break contact with the car, the game’s up. So people could either sponsor you by the hour or for an arbitrary length of time. For instance, could you conceivably spend a full 24 hours touching a car? I don’t think you could. Prove me wrong!

2. Sponsored Unpleasantness

When considering wacky fundraising ideas (and fundraising ideas have to be wacky when it’s Comic Relief), for some reason it’s hard not to think about the old bath of baked beans trope. How has anybody ever managed to raise money by these means? Is it because it’s such an unpleasant and humiliating spectacle that, once witnessed, people can’t help but throw money at you?

To that end, why not try sitting in a car filled with baked beans for Comic Relief? Yeah, you might cause irreparable damage to the upholstery, and you’d never, ever, ever shift the smell, but you know. Charity!

Or why not buy a pair of clown pants, fill them with cold custard and perform all of your daily motoring needs whilst wearing said queer livery?

1. Sponsored Inadvisable Behaviour

Few things are more effective at getting people to donate than a reckless disregard for personal safety. Behind the wheel of your car you’re in control of a mechanised death machine. Fundraising should therefore flow like the tears of your parents when they witness the hell you’re about to unleash.

My suggestion is that you get people to sponsor you to act French for a day. You get to look forward to a glass of red wine at lunch, but you also must commit to driving on the wrong side of the road all day.

Good luck!

And have a wonderful Comic Relief.

Though I must point out that your chances of having a wonderful Comic Relief will diminish dramatically if you attempt any of my suggested fundraising plans.

Nationwide Vehicle Contracts are pleased to announce great savings of up to£67 a month on the quirky and economical Smart Fortwo Coupe.

Whilst affordable to run, they are also affordable to lease with rates now starting from as little as £124.95 + VAT!

Boasting a characteristic shape and modest proportions, the Smart Fortwo is instantly recognisable. With an overall length of just 2.5 metres, it is the perfect option for city dwellers who shudder at the thought of tricky urban parking.

Despite compact appearances, space inside the Smart Fortwo is surprisingly generous. Up front, driver and passenger can enjoy their ride with ample leg, head and shoulder room; the boot is large enough to meet the average person’s daily needs. The cabin is very stylish thanks to features such as fabric covered dash and doors; funky column stalks and pod-style dials on some models.

The Smart Fortwo is in its element when nipping in and out of traffic. A tight turning circle and great all round visibility make it perfect for those who often drive in built up areas, yet it also fares well when faced with the open road. It corners well, adequately resists body roll and generally remains composed at higher speeds.

We think that our deal on the Smart Fortwo Coupe Passion mhd Softouch Auto is well worth consideration.

Available from only £134.95 a month, this model is driven by a peppy 1.0 litre three-cylinder engine. It returns impressive fuel consumption figures and low CO2 emissions, meaning that it is neither harmful to your wallet or to the environment.

Standard items of specification on the Smart Fortwo Coupe Passion mhd Softouch Auto include:
