May 18, 2011 - Roughly 5.4 million children in the United States are currently diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, otherwise known as ADHD. Two-thirds of those children are taking psychiatric drugs to combat their symptoms. With sales of these drugs reaching $ 1.2 billion in 2010, many psychiatric experts are raising questions about ADHD and whether or not the condition was invented strictly as a way to increase pharmaceutical sales.

How ADHD Could be an Invented Condition

Human brain

According to Dr. Fred Baughman, child neurologist and opponent of ADHD diagnosis, the ADHD diagnosis is not a clear and concise diagnosis and is used when a "disease of the brain" is suspected. Dr. Baughman refers to a 1970 congressional hearing that involved psychiatrists appearing and testifying that the disorder involving minimal brain dysfunction needed to be diagnosed by a doctor and treated with drugs.

He further indicates that this was the beginning of ADHD, in that it and other psychiatric diagnoses were considered to be "diseases of the brain" and need drugs to combat the symptoms. The conditions always refer to "chemical imbalances in the brain", which can not be completely proven, but yet drugs are used to counter the imbalance. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows use of these drugs and accept the belief that these drugs "balance the chemical imbalance."'

How ADHD is Diagnosed

Unlike a physical illness or disease, there is no concrete test for ADHD. There is no way to test for ADHD and reach a conclusion, other than one based on perception. Dr. Baughman, in his practice, refers to a letter sent back from Health Canada, that was in response to the question of diagnosing ADHD. The response was as follows:

"....there is no gross, microscopic, or chemical abnormality in any psychiatric diagnosis; there is no objective way of verifying a psychiatric diagnosis as a disease."

It is this statement that leads many practitioners to not believe in the ADHD diagnosis and to oppose using psychiatric drugs to combat the apparent symptoms. If Health Canada says there is no way of objectively verifying the disease, then how can there be claims that "chemical imbalances are present", since they can not be tested for in the first place?

Dangers of ADHD Drugs, Diagnosis and Treatments

With so many children, 5.4 million roughly, diagnoses as having ADHD, what exactly are the dangers? The dangers of diagnosing your child with ADHD are more than you may think and more than your doctor will tell you.

The Danger of ADHD Diagnosis

Diagnosing your child with ADHD is not a surefire conclusion and can have many detrimental effects. First, by diagnosing your child with a condition, they are being labelled and no matter how understanding people say they are, you can be sure your child is looked at a treated differently than others. This may mean they get special treatment and more care from educators, which may sound good but does separate them from the rest of their class.

Bullying at school

On the flip-side they may also be treated rudely and impatiently; especially by educators who expect them to "fall in line" with the rest of the class. I have heard from many parents whose teachers have been pushing them to drug their children so they behave like the "other children" in the class.

Your child may be teased, bullied or singled-out because of their ADHD diagnosis.

The ADHD diagnosis is also harmful in that it may make caregivers and medical professionals stop looking for other possible factors. Your child may have a learning disability, problems seeing or hearing, other imbalances in the body or even be an Indigo child. If your child is simply diagnosed as ADHD and then left to try a bunch of drug alternatives, you may not be treating the problem - if a problem even exists!

Dangers of ADHD Drugs

ADHD drugs and medications

The drugs used to treat ADHD are not without side effects - both short-term and long-term. You need to weigh your options carefully when considering psychiatric drugs and don't treat them as supplements, they are psychiatric drugs so make no mistake when choosing the road of drugs. Psychiatric drugs do not have a long history of tests, except for Ritalin which was one of the first drugs used for ADHD type diagnosis. Ritalin is highly addictive and often leads to adult addictions.

ADHD drugs have a variety of side effects that your doctor may or may not tell you, so do your research and speak to other parents if you can to get some inside information. While a certain drug may work for one child, it may not work for others and this is where educators are often mislead. They will notice one or two children on a certain type of medication and push parents to give that to their child as well, but they don't know all the risks and side effects.

Side effects of ADHD drugs include: upset stomach, loss of appetite, problems sleeping, nervousness, anxiety, slower growth, shaking, restlessness, dizziness, depression, tics, headaches, heart attacks, high blood pressure, obsessive-compulsive behavior, addictions, aggression, paranoia, suicidal thoughts and interference with normal brain development.

Why ADHD Would Be an Invented Disease

Children in schoolroom setting

There is a lot of money to be made in ADHD drug sales and with so many children having these learning difficulties, it is easy to put them all under the blanket of ADHD. Caregivers and educators measure children to their peers and expect the same level of behavior from each child, but children are different and do not always learn or act the same as others.

Some children thing differently and process information differently, it does not mean they have a disease, it simply means they have a different way of approaching things. Even adults are different in that some will require detailed instructions on how to complete a task while others just dive in and get it done. In the classroom setting, for example, some people learn strictly be reading books and absorbing information; while others need to be hands-on and learn through physical interaction. Does this mean there is something wrong with one of the groups? No, of course not, it just means they have different ways of learning that works for them.

In the Journal of Health Economics, a study by Todd Elder indicated that nearly 1 million children in the US may be misdiagnosed with ADHD, simply because of their age! It was discovered that, especially in younger grades, children who are the youngest in their classrooms are not as developed as those who are older and in the same grade. Educators will measure students with one another and even the test for ADHD asks caregivers to rate their child's performance "compared to that of their peers."

For children who are younger, say 5 years vs 6 years of age, the differences can be very big and maturity much less for the younger kids. When comparing the younger children to their older peers, you may think there is something wrong with them and jump to an ADHD conclusion. These kids need to be compared to their own age group, otherwise they are always expected to be something they are not yet - older! They are being robbed of their childhood because they are always expected to act like the older kids, but they just aren't there yet.

Author's Note:

I am the mother of an ADHD child and have spent the last 8 years dealing with the ups and downs and questions of this diagnosis. We've tried it all and found things that worked, sort of worked and seriously failed! Over the last 8 years I have researched medical papers, articles and conducted parent interviews to help others understand this ailment that seems to affect most of the children out there.

I do urge caregivers to do their research and try natural remedies first, such as Native Remedies and behavioral techniques before jumping to the drug conclusion. The drugs are not a quick-fix and often have some serious side effects which may or may not be reversible! Our own child suffered weight loss, troubles sleeping, upset stomach and even suicidal thoughts - luckily we were able to intervene before things got worse and we found natural supplements that worked when used in combination with behavioral techniques.

Helping Your ADHD Child

With my son's help, I wrote the book titled "Helping Your ADHD/ADD Child: Simple Steps to Improvement" which was designed to serve as a guide and positive outlook for children who are thought to have ADHD. It outlines some simple techniques to help your child stay on track and keep themselves organized. Basically, it gives them the tools they will need to be successful in life and believe me, they can be successful! Children with ADHD are very creative and are more likely to become entrepreneurs, it's just a matter of helping them get the tools they need to keep organized and finish what needs to be done. Most of all, they need support, love and encouragement so they can believe in themselves and keep themselves motivated!

toxic metals found in makeup cosmetics

May 17, 2011 – In a report released by Environmental Defence, it was disclosed that 100% of products tested, all tested positive nickel and over 90% tested positive for both lead and beryllium. Environmental Defence is calling on Health Canada to modify their regulating standards and to enforce the laws set forth.

What Toxic Heavy Metals Were Found in Makeup Cosmetics

SGS Canada tested a wide array of mascaras, eye shadows, lip glosses and other cosmetic products that are worn everyday by most women. The results were alarming and outrageous:

100% tested positive for nickel

96% tested positive for lead

Heavy metals in cosmetics

90% tested positive for beryllium

Products, on average, contained at least 4 of the 8 metals of concern (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, beryllium, nickel, selenium and thallium)

Highest levels of arsenic (70ppm) cadium (3ppm) and lead (110ppm), found in lip glosses that are often ingested while being worn

Highest level of lead was Benefit Benetint lip gloss, 110ppm whichwas 10 times higher than allowable level (Health Canada allows 10ppm maximum on lead in products) The same brand contained 70ppm Arsenic, which is 20x higher than Health Canada limits of 3ppm.

How Toxic Heavy Metals Get Into Makeup and Cosmetics

These metals are not put there intentionally, they are simply impurities in the product and are not required to be listed on the labels, since they are not a directly-added ingredient. Manufacturers could, and should, take care to remove these impurities, but time is money and since guidelines are so laid-back, very few manufacturers remove these heavy metals from the final product.

Neither Health Canada nor the FDA require the manufacturers to supply test results before the market is allowed for sale to the general public. Rather, it is up to the manufacturer to “know” what is allowed and not allowed and to follow the rules. Basically, it’s an honor system and the consumer pay the price for those manufacturers who are not on their best honor.

Toxic Metals of Concern in Makeup Cosmetics

Canada needs to modify their guidelines to not only lower the allowable amount of toxic metals allowed in makeup cosmetics, but also needs to include the whole range of metals that are a concern. They include:

Arsenic

Cadmium

Lead

Mercury

Beryllium

Nickel

Selenium

Thallium

Health Hazards Caused by Toxic Metal Build-Up in Body

Heavy metals accumulate in your body and over time, cause a variety of health concerns including: cancer; reproductive and developmental issues; neurological disorders; loss of memory; mood swings; joint and muscle problems; problems with cardiovascular, skeletal, blood, immune system, kidney and renal systems; headaches; vomiting, nausea, diarrhea; lung damage; dermatitis; brittle hair and hair loss.

Heavy metals are also considered to be endocrine disruptors which disrupt your normal regulation of hormonal levels. They are also suspected to be respiratory toxins and there are no known “safe” blood levels.

How Consumers Can Avoid Heavy Metal Toxins in Makeup Cosmetics

Consumers need to begin reading labels and doing their research before using makeup cosmetic products. Since these heavy metals will not appear on the labels as a direct ingredient, you will need to research the brand and company and get familiar with ingredients that you need to avoid.

As The Vancouver Sun reported May 16, 2011, you wont’ find these metals listed on the ingredient label and will have to do your own research to find out what’s safe and what isn’t. Consumer can pressure Health Canada and ask them to start enforcing the guidelines and making it mandatory that full lists of ingredients are disclosed to consumers, including by-products and contaminants.

The Center For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned parents to avoid letting their children use any products that contained lead. Unfortunately, there are no quick and easy lists to read so as to how parents can help their children avoid lead in their products is anyone’s guess.

What the Cosmetic Industry Says About Toxic Metals in Makeup Cosmetics

Now of course, we can guess what the industry says about any concern for toxic metals in cosmetics, but for the sake of argument and to remain unbiased – let’s give a paragraph or so to Darren Praznik, president and CEO of the Canadian Cosmetics, Toiletries and Fragrances Association (CCTFA).

Praznik indicates the Enviornmental Defence’s report was skewed and misleading; designed to only scare the general public. He also indicates that that consumers would have to consume “several pounds of cosmetics every day to get within any amount that was of real risk…”.

To Mr. Praznik I would say, ” since these toxic heavy metals are known to accumulate in our bodies over time, how can you tell me that consuming even ‘acceptable’ levels of lead and arsenic will not cause me serious health issues after a decade or two?” The body does not rid itself of these metals and with so many products containing these metals, you are likely ingesting much more than you think.

I would also note that Mr. Praznik indicated that “skin wouldn’t absorb any heavy metals because it acts as a strong shield,” but I wonder if Mr. Praznik has heard of propylene glycol and other cosmetic ingredients that increase absorption rates and allow these toxic chemicals to penetrate the skin easier? Sure the skin is strong, but it’s not made of teflon and what goes ON your body, goes IN your body.

One last note as to why Mr. Praznik hold his viewpoint: It’s his job! He represents 160 companies that are members of the CCTFA including: L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, Chanel and Procter & Gamble Beauty, so there is really no surprise which side of the fence he’s on. Imagine how long a president could hold onto his position if he starting saying ” These cosmetic companies are poisoning the general public and don’t want to spend the extra money to ensure the heavy metals are removed from the final product!”

Finding Products Without Harmful Ingredients

You can check out the Environmental Working Groups Cosmetic Database and look up the products you use. The database shows what ingredients are present as well as which ingredients are likely to be contaminated with unwanted ingredients.

Consumers can also find natural products stores that strictly avoid toxic chemical ingredients. Just because a product is in a “natural” section does not mean it is the safest out there. A few boutiques, especially online, are offering only toxic-free products that do not contain questionable ingredients. Stores like Natural e GREEN offer a variety of personal care and cleaning products for the whole family and keep their customers informed with the latest information.

You may also wish to read books on these subjects and get familiar with ingredients you should avoid. “The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide: What You Need to Know Before You Buy”, is a great book that outlines the various common chemicals and alternate names it goes under.

May 16, 2011 - It never ceases to amaze me how many people are on the Pro-side of the paraben debate. Not only are they on the "pro" side, they get downright mean and nasty when you say anything bad about them. Of course, these people are often chemists and manufacturers who stand by their decision to use parabens in cosmetics and personal care products!

Parabens: Safe or Harmful

How does the government study parabens and test them? Is it as simple as placing some paraben on someone's skin and then judging the results? No, of course not! Parabens are absorbed into the body and affect the body's internal organs and ill health effects are only noticed after a long period of exposure.

So how can paraben safety be determined? Or rather, how IS it determined since FDA and other bodies have allowed use of parabens in our cosmetics and personal care products? How can they tell us they are safe, when proper tests have not been done?

I am often asked, as are other advocates for toxic-free ingredients, to "prove they are harmful" and I counter with the same: "Prove they are NOT harmful!" Go ahead wiseguys, prove to me they are safe. Prove to me that parabens DO NOT cause cancer or tumor cells to form and grow. Prove to me that parabens DO NOT mess with the hormonal systems and levels of boys and girls alike. Prove to me, that they are safe to use on newborns and safe to use for 40+ years; continuously and in large accumulated doses!

The Connection Between Parabens and Breast Cancer

So, in 2004, The Journal of Applied Toxicology, Darber Ph.D:

Indicates that a high percentage of breast tumors examined showed presence of parabens. This, of course, is not enough to say parabens CAUSED breast cancer, but it does present a good argument to further explore the connection.

His research and discovery should alarm both the general public and government bodies, but instead, the manufacturers and gov't agencies counter the research: saying it is inconclusive and there is no link.

"Well of course there is no link - yet!" Really, it shows enough evidence that there is possibly a connection and it will just be ignored? Not good enough I say. Other studies have been done and the findings not published because the study was not "scientifically acceptable" so the questions remain "unanswered." Huh?

Is it acceptable, that research agencies did studies that would were not scientifically acceptable and that they leave the question of paraben safety "unanswered?" Is it acceptable the government still allows use of this ingredient, even though studies to prove safety have not been done and the question about their safety is "unanswered?

Saying Parabens are Safe in Baby and Kids Personal Care Products

So forgive the rant, but as a mother who loves her children and wants to make sure that what I'm putting on them won't cause ill-health effects, I have to say this loud and clear: "Parabens must be proven safe before they are allowed to be sold to the general public -Period!"

The chemists and manufacturers who contact me, complaining that I'm wrongly accusing parabens of being a health hazard and that I should accept them since the government does, can just back off until they can "prove to me that parabens are safe". That means finding people who willingly use parabens and allow research agencies to test their internal structures to see if they suffer ill health effects like reproductive issues or cancer. Not many people want to take that chance, but since the chemists, manufacturers and FDA staff feel they are safe, maybe they should step up to the plate and volunteer to be test subjects for the paraben safety debate?

Don't bother looking in Denmark for any children test subjects though - this proactive country has already banned parabens from being used in children's products and hopefully soon, other countries will follow suit, at least until this issue of safety has been resolved!

And to the many chemists and manufacturers who like to email me and try to bully me into changing my belief: Leave me alone! Simple. You stick to your belief and I will stick to mine until proper clinical research gives me more to go on. I have children to protect and I will do the best I can with what I have to go on - at this point, paraben ingredients are not part of grocery list and it will stay that way for a long, long, long time!

May 13, 2011 – It’s that time of year again and the sun is HOT, HOT, HOT! Even on days the sun is behind clouds there is likely to be a high UV index, so take precautions and protect your babies skin. The best protection is clothing, but when it is 40 degrees outside, your poor babe will melt if she is covered head to toe in clothing. Badger sunscreen has just introduced a new baby sunscreen that is non-toxic and contains natural and organic ingredients. It is safe for the whole family AND the environment!

Badger Baby Organic Natural Sunscreen

Tested and approved by pediatricians, Badger Baby Sunscreen contains non-nano sized Zinc particles to provide full SPF 30 protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. It has a mild scent of Chamomile and Calendula and will keep your baby safe from the sun’s harmful rays.

Badger Baby Sunscreen:

Protects from both UVA and UVB rays

Natural and organic baby sunscreen

Certified Natural by the NPA – Natural Products Association

Very moisturizing; containing organic oils and beeswax to hydrate and protect the skin

Water resistant for 40 mintues (min.)

Works immediately after application

Environmentally friendly and allowed at eco-friendly resorts

Packaged in recyclable packaging that is phthalate-free.

How to Use Badger Baby Sunscreen

Put a small amount in your hand and gently rub onto baby’s skin. The sunscreen will melt and allow you to easily rub the product onto babies skin for full sun protection. The sunscreen is designed to sit on top of babies skin and not allow UV rays to penetrate the layers of skin, so babies skin will look a little white – this is normal.

Other sunscreens that soak in the sunscreen do not look white but they allow the UV rays to penetrate the first couple layers of skin, which are most sensitive to sunburns and health hazards. Badger baby sunscreen ensure no UV rays get through ANY layers of the skin.

Difference in SPF Sun Protection Factors: What Does it Mean?

Nowadays there are a variety of sun protection lotions that range from SPF 15 to SPF 100. Be careful when choosing your lotion because a higher SPF doesn’t mean much – seriously!

Take a look at the percentage of UVB rays that are blocked with the following:

SPF 15 = 93%

SPF 30 = 97%

SPF 50 = 98%

There really isn’t a big difference in the protection you get and another interesting tidbit – the FDA does not allow any sunscreen to have a higher SPF rating than 30+! They are currently working on a plan to allow sunscreens to be labelled at SPF 50 in the future, but for now – the maximum is SPF 30+. So those “other” sunscreens you see out there saying they are SPF 100 – are misbranded and are attempting to mislead you.

SPF 50 and SPF 100

Many of the sunscreens that are labelled with high SPF’s protect only from UVB rays and not UVA rays. UVA rays are the harmful ones that can cause skin cancer. Dermatologists recommend SPF of 15 or 30. Some sunscreens that were tested shlowed to block 100% of UVB rays but blocked little, if any, UVA rays. In these cases, you are wasting your money on these high SPF lotions because they aren’t protecting your skin from the harmful rays. This misleading marketing ploy is one of the reasons why the FDA is stepping in to help consumers understand more about sunscreen safety.

Sun Safety Guidelines for Baby and Kids

Generally, the sun is at it’s most dangerous levels between 10 am and 4 pm, according to the FDA. You should

SPF 15 lip protection

always use a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunscreen when outdoors; even when it is cloudy. Cover delicate areas like ears, nose, lips, eyelids and the back of the neck with sunscreen and use lip protection with SPF 15 or 30.

Remember that water, snow and sand will cause the sun’s rays to reflect and can cause sunburn. Babies and children should also wear sunglasses that provide 100% UVA protection. Look for sunglasses with the label on them- toy glasses do not offer any protection.

Take your baby or child out of the sun every half hour or so to see how their skin is. Re-apply sunscreen as needed and check often – if their skin is starting to change color keep them in the shade for a bit to ensure sunburn is not developing. Remember too that if you are traveling to hot destinations where the sun is stronger than you are used to, it is a good idea to limit sun exposure during the first couple of days at least. Sunburn does not show up right away and your child may “look fine” until it’s too late!

Dangers of Sunscreen for Baby and Kids

Many commercial sunscreens on the market contain toxic chemicals that either allow the sun’s rays to penetrate the skin and/or penetrate the skin themselves and leech into the body. Oxybenzone is one of those ingredients and it suspected at being an endocrine disruptor. It is not recommended to be applied over a large portion of your body and sunscreens containing this ingredient will have the following warnings (by law):

“apply liberally” or “use sparingly”.

All you need to know about chemicals

As I wrote in my book, The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide, products that contain harmful ingredients will , by law, carry warnings such as:

Keep out of reach of children

Use under adult supervision

Keep away from children

If ingested, contact your local Poison Control Center

Keep away from eyes

Discontinue is rash occurs; consult doctor if symptoms persist of worsen

Now, the last two are more of a common sense thing really. Any product that gets into the eyes will most likely irritate and cause eyes to get red, but some products contain coal-tar dyes which can cause blindness, so read the ingredients. As for rashes developing, allergies are strange and can happen to anyone at any time. Babies especially can react to essential oils found in natural products, so if you notice any rash with any product, discontinue and re-introduce later.

You can buy Badger sunscreen products in many specialty stores and health stores as well as online boutiques and wellness stores.

It’s not a fashion trend; they are hazelwood and amber necklaces and they help baby feel better! For centuries the aboriginal people put hazelwood chips on the backs of babies necks – to help ease the pain from teething. Hazelwood necklaces also help alleviate other health issues – naturally (and fashionably!)

How Hazelwood Necklaces and Bracelets Naturally Heal Your Body

Double hazelwood bracelet

Hazelwood acts to balance the body’s pH levels – turning acidic pH levels into alkaline levels. The way it works is the hazelwood actually absorbs the extra acid and while it does, the wood gradually turns a darker brown color. In order for the body to be at it’s best healing level, it should be slightly more alkaline. When your body is higher in acidic pH, you are susceptible to more illnesses and pains. By helping it be more alkaline, it is better able to filter out toxins and help the immune system combat any illnesses.

Hazelwood necklaces have been used by customers to relieve and soothe the following health conditions:

Heartburn

Gastric Reflux

Teething

Skin Problems (eczema, rashes, dermatitis, psoriasis, acne etc.)

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis

Constipation

Migraines

Cavities

and other health ailments that are caused by excess of acid in the body

How the Amber Necklace and Bracelets Help Natural Healing

The Amber puts succinic (suh-sin-ic) acid into your body, which is said to act as an anti-inflammatory agent. The Amber helps to reduce inflammation be it joint pain from arthritis or even from injuries. It occ

urs naturally in nature and is very important in your body’s metabolism process. High in anti-oxidants, it is said to stimulate neural system recovery and boost the immune system. Users say it boost energy levels, concentration and awareness.

Hazelwood and Amber necklaces

Europeans have used Amber for natural healing for centuries. While they did not realize what succinic acid was and that Amber is very high in it, they did realize that it worked to heal them and used it to keep healthy. Tea was brewed in Amber pots, baby teethers were made of Amber and it was also burned to fumigate after the plague hit Europe in the middle ages.

Dr. Veniamin Khazanov of the RAS’ Institute of Pharmacology at the Tomsk Scientific Center says “For aged people, succinic acid has proved to be indispensable. It is capable of restoring the energy balance at the cellular level, which is often upset as the years go by, and helps the patient regain his youthful energy.” He says also that it has proven the equal or better of many commercial drugs and is significantly less expensive.

Are Hazelwood and Amber Necklaces Safe for Baby and Everyone

baby safe break away clasp

You must look carefully at the necklaces for baby and ensure they have a baby-safe latch on the back. The clasp should be designed to break open if it gets snagged on something; to prevent strangulation. Some parents choose to take the necklace off at sleeping time and you can also wrap the necklace around the ankle a few times and cover with a sock.

When it comes to babies and kids, you don’t want the necklaces or bracelets to get into their mouths. The beads and wood pieces can be a choking hazard. The necklaces can help with diaper rash, upset stomach and teething pains so if you aren’t comfortable with having the necklace on their neck while they sleep, wrap it around their ankle and cover with a sock to ensure they don’t pull at it! If they are wearing it as a necklaces, they should not be able to get it over their chin (to enable sucking on it!)

How Long Hazelwood and Amber Necklaces Will Last and Keep Working

Dark edges show necklace is ready to be replaced

It depends on how acidic your body is. The necklaces will generally last between 3 months and a year. Depending on use and wear and tear, you may need to replace your necklace every 4 months. (Baby safety clasp features only last 4 months, so if you are using the necklace for an infant, replace necklace after 4 months or move necklace to ankle instead.) Some customers have reported using double necklaces for severe whole-body eczema conditions, while others need only a single necklace to keep their body pH in balance.

It is also advisable to remove the necklace or bracelets before showing/bathing or swimming. While regular water won’t reduce the affect of the hazelwood, it can warp the wood and give it a “weathered” appearance. Chlorine, however, will destroy the wood and you should not wear these necklaces when swimming in chlorinated water.

Many customers feel relief within a day or two, but it can take 2-4 weeks to notice any difference; depending on your health ailments. Hazelwood and Amber necklaces will not cure the problem, they only absorb extra acid that your body is producing.

Deciding on a Necklace

You don’t necessarily need a combination Hazelwood and Amber necklace, their are many necklaces that are hazelwood only. The Amber addition helps to add some immune boosting to your system but it is the hazelwood the really helps in taking away the harmful acid build-up. So choose something that appeals to you and see how it works! Even if you aren’t buying them for health purposes – they are fashionable and fun too!

Tamara was contacted to comment on the importance of cleaning with green products and to help consumers understand why green cleaning is important. During her interview with the editor, Tamara provided the e-version of her book "The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide" to the magazine to help provide as much information as possible to the public.

The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide Book

Inspired by her customers, Tamara wrote The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide to help her customers understand about chemical ingredients in their bath and personal care products. The book is meant to serve as a quick-reference guide and lists the more common chemicals that consumers often worry about.

Readers of the Cosmetic Chemicals Guide have expressed how they really like the ease of finding the information they are looking for and how each chemical listed shows alternate names they may appear on labels as.
The book is available in paperback from Natural e GREEN and also, for the month of May, on sale @ Amazon.com (as e-book)

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is calling for an overhaul of the nation’s chemical management policy because the current system fails to protect children and pregnant women, who are most vulnerable to hazardous chemical exposures. Over the past few decades, tens of thousands of new chemicals have been introduced into the environment, often in extremely large quantities. But the primary federal law that governs chemical management in the U.S. – the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) – has not undergone any meaningful revision since it was first passed in 1976, and since then, the TSCA has been used to regulate only five chemicals or chemical classes. In a new policy statement, “Chemical-Management Policy: Prioritizing Children’s Health,” published in the May 2011 issue of Pediatrics (published online April 25), the AAP recommends that the chemical-management policy be “substantially revised.” The AAP recommends any chemicals policy should consider the consequences on children and their families. Among the other recommendations:

The regulation of chemicals must be based on evidence, but decisions to ban chemicals should be based on reasonable levels of concern rather than demonstrated harm.

Any testing of chemicals should include the impact on women and children, including potential effects on reproduction and development.

Chemicals should meet safety standards similar to those met by pharmaceuticals or pesticide residues on food.

There should be post-marketing surveillance of chemicals, and the EPA must have the authority to remove a chemical if needed.

Federal funding should be provided for research to prevent, identify and evaluate the effects of chemicals on children’s health.

Other groups, including the American Medical Association, the American Public Health Association and the American Nurses Association have all independently recommended changes to the TSCA.

www.aap.org

Toxic Shampoo and Bath Chemical: Cocamidopropyl Betaine « Tamara Laschinsky: Author

April 25, 2011 – A common chemical found in bath products, shampoos and other personal care products is cocamidopropyl betaine. It is used as a foam booster, as an antistatic agent, as a cleansing agent and as a skin conditioning agent. It is also toxic and can cause allergic reactions.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Coco Betaine, in Shampoo, Soaps and Bubble Bath

Cocamidopropyl Betaine is also known as Coco-betaine. It is used as a cleansing agent and promotes lathering and foaming. It is often found in shampoos, soaps, bubble baths, dish soaps and any other cleaning agents.

Health Risks of Coamidopropyl betaine or coco-betaine

This chemical is known to cause irritation of the skin, eyes, and lungs. It is also suspected to be harmful to the environment. Under high temperatures and acidic conditions, it can also produce nitrosamines (carcinogenic compounds).

The American Contact Dermatitis Society named cocamidylpropyl betaine Allergen of the Year in 2004.

Products Containing Cocamidopropyl Betaine or Coco-Betaine

Many commercial products contain toxic chemicals, so it’s best to read the labels and do some research. Products known to contain this chemical are:

Avalon Organics (yeah, don’t let the word “organics” fool you! It’s

just a word.)

Giovanni

Physicians Formula

Aveeno

Maggie Blue

Essence of Wellbeing

Aura Cacia

Weleda

Kiss My Face

Burts Bees

Burts Bees as a Natural Product and Safety Levels

I’ve been asked countless time, “Is Burt’s Bees” a safe and natural option. The answer to that is “it depends”.

Some of Burt’s Bees products are ok, they contain safe ingredients and no known toxic chemicals. However, items like their bubble baths do have coco-betaine listed on their labels which can cause irritation of the skin, eyes and lungs.

Burt’s Bees biggest con is their use of “fragrance/parfum”. Most of their products contain synthetic fragrances which we know cause allergies and sensitivities and are composed of countless chemicals in their chemical makeup. They often contain phthalates which have a slew of health concerns.

My advice to all consumers is “read the labels”! If you aren’t sure about an ingredient or two – look them up! Just because a product says “natural” or “organic” or “essential oils”, does not mean they don’t contain toxic chemicals! Chemicals go under alternate names too, so write them down, look them up and go from there. Also, just because a company has a couple of “safe” products does not mean they are all safe – so keep reading those labels!

I've used the Carina spray deodorant before and it works good too - the only difference is you spray a couple of mists on your armpits and let it dry whereas Rocky Mountain is a roller-ball applicator, so it's a bit easier and less messy (if you spray too many sprays @ once with the Carina it can trickle down your side before it dries.) Rocky Mountain introduced a Men's Shaving Soap and he is now using that one with the same feedback!

All Things Jill Shaving Ouch! Balm
If my husband gets a nick shaving he'll use the Ouch! Balm to stop the bleeding and help the healing process.

I have used the balm on cold sores and other facial blemishes, since the tea tree oil is a great antiseptic and helps reduce inflammation and promote healing. Whereas cold sores used to last up to 4 weeks for me and were painful and ugly, using this balm stops the pain and spreading of the cold sore and keeps it moist so it doesn't crack. My cold sores disappear within a week, thanks to this little balm!

Natural Mineral Makeup

Pure Anada Mineral Powder Makeup
I love putting on my makeup in the morning! With my problem skin, I often did not wear foundation since it would clog my pores and felt heavy on my face. I use Pure Anada foundation, brushing it on lightly and applying more if a darker tone is needed. I sometimes use the Matte Minerals (or glow minerals) either under my foundation or on top for smoother coverage. What I love the most is it is flexible - put on a little bit and add more if needed. It feels like nothing is on my face and doesn't feel oily as the day progresses!

I also use their blush line and eye powder line. Their Mascara is very nice as well and a bit more water resistant than the SunCoat mascara. I prefer the SunCoat since it's easier to wash off but if it's raining outside or I know I'll be getting my face wet - I use the Pure Anada Mascara!

SunCoat Eye Liner and Mascara

The liquid eye liner is great and I use the Jade color. I've been using the same bottle for a year now and it's still in good condition and plenty left. Like I've said before, a little goes a long way! The mascara is very, very nice and does not clump at all. It won't run during the day but it is easy to wash off, which I like very much!

Rocky Mountain Natural Lip Glosses
These were just introduced and most have sold out of stock due to unexpected customer demand! I use the clear peppermint gloss for a cool crisp gloss. For a subtle bit of color I use the blush gloss. I also use the natural lip plumper for a lip boost - it's nice and clear with a hint of cinnamon!

Natural Sunscreen and Bug Repellent
Badger Sunscreen
Safe for babies, kids, adults and the environment, I LOVE this sunscreen! It is thick and you apply a bit in your palm to melt it down and then apply to body. We use the SPF 30 regular sunscreen which has a nice light orange scent. It sits on top of the skin and does not allow the sun's rays to penetrate your skin. Other sunscreens penetrate the first couple of layers of skin (which is why you don't see them when you rub them in) and while it protects the lower layers of skin, it does not protect the first couple of layers.

Kogi Bug Repellent

Due to government regulations we can't call this a "bug repellent" or "insect lotion" etc and so forth. To be called those names you have to undergo years of testing and pay a hefty fee to the government. So we call it "Outdoor Survival Lotion". Simple.

I use the Kogi outdoor lotion and spray for myself and my family. It contains catnip which is very effective in keeping bugs away (and no, the cats won't swarm you! I tested that too!) I use the lotion on our skin and neck/face and the spray on clothes and hats etc. This formula contains lavender and other essential oils and smells quite nice -especially considering the alternatives!

SunBurn Butter - Rocky Mountain Soap
Sometimes sunburns can't be avoided and this butter is AMAZING! It glides on smoothly so it won't hurt when you apply it. It cools the skin and also moisturizes it, reducing how much peeling will happen later on. I've used it on myself and my family - it is a must-have for sure!

Badger SPF Stick and Lip Care

We use the SPF Stick for protecting the face in the summer. They also make a nice lip balm with SPF that is good too!

Natural Pet Care Products

PAWZ Shampoo
We have two dogs and a cat. We've used the PAWZ shampoo for all of them! It lathers nicely and smells good to and once they are rinsed off, they smell good too! The best thing is, we know they aren't ingesting any toxic chemicals when they lick themselves off later. We do our best to rinse them completely anyways, but this an even better peace of mind!

Natural Eczema Care Products

Rocky Mountain Unscented Butter
Customers have long told me how great this butter worked and I could never keep enough in stock! It is an unscented butter and used for regular moisturizing, but also works very well for treating eczema and soothing irritated skin.

Rocky Mountain Pumpkin Soap
Pumpkin is good and reducing inflammation and providing moisture - this soap is often used by eczema-sufferers.

Pure Anada Shea Butter
After writing an article on the health properties of unrefined pure Shea butter, I discovered it is very useful in treating all skin conditions including eczema and frostbite. While I haven't suffered from eczema since I was a teen-ager, I developed eczema again on my knuckles in the summer of 2010. Perhaps it was due to the dry weather among other factors, but nothing I did would make it go away - and it hurt!

I used the Pure Anada Shea Butter for a day and noticed the pain was going away and the burning sensation was gone too. By day 2, my hands were still dry but not cracked and painful like before. I used the butter every day and within 2 weeks, the eczema was gone. I use the butter when my hands get dry now but the eczema has not returned since!

We've also used it on my son's dry skin and when my daughter got frostbite on her cheeks this winter. The shea butter moisturized the skin, preventing it from blistering up and she has no scarring from her frostbite!

Eczema is triggered by chemicals and they will make the eczema flare-up. It is important to not only use good creams and lotions but to also eliminate irritating chemicals. Replace your hair washes, perfumes, fragranced laundry soaps, lotions and cosmetics with products that don't have toxic chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Once you do this, you'll notice your eczema not flaring up as much and probably won't need as much cream to keep the eczema under control. Many of my customers were coming by to get the unscented body butter to treat eczema but were still using their regular shampoos and lotions that contained chemicals. When they finally phased those out and went with natural products, they saw a big difference in their skin's health and didn't need to keep treating their eczema because it resolved itself.

Natural ADHD/ADD Treatments
For two years now, my son has been using the Native Remedies ADHD supplements. After trying so many products without success we had no choice but to go the pharmaceutical route. After many bad experiences in that area, I had heard about Native Remedies and wasted no time in ordering some up.

The products worked great and since they fit my store's concept of being natural, I brought them in to Natural e GREEN! My son has used Focus, Brightspark and Mindsoothe and all have shown great success in his attention and attitude. He no longer needs the focus but uses the Brightspark and Mindsoothe regularly.

What I love the most is they are non-addictive. In the summer when he is off on vacation, he rarely takes any of them unless he needs them. For 3 weeks he took nothing last year and was fine. It helps him to manage his own mood and behavior and recognize when he needs to do something like drink more water, take a break or take his Native Remedies.
safe chemicals act

Senators Rooting for Introductin of Safe Chemicals Act to Protect Consumers

April 15, 2011 - Senators Frank Lautenberg, Barbara Boxer, Amy Klobuchar, Charles Schumer and others are standing behind the need to introduce "The Safe Chemicals Act" which is deigned to identify and stop toxic chemicals in consumer products before they hit the market.

Why Safe Chemical Act is Needed to Protect Consumers

Many products on the shelves contain a variety of chemicals that have health risks. It is known that these chemicals will accumulate in the body and pass on to fetuses for pregnant mothers. Children's bodies are slower in detoxifying and the toxicity level for babies and children is often higher than adults who are exposed to the same products.

The FDA and Health Canada allow many products on store shelves that contain a variety of chemicals. What is worse is the fact that many marketers are "green-washing" their products, making them look safe, natural and "green".

Products That Contain Chemicals

If you can buy it at your local store, it's most likely containing some toxic chemicals. Even stores that are designed to be "natural", "organic" or even health-stores, will carry products that contain chemicals. Not intentionally, mind you, but it happens.

Baby products, shampoos, hair care, body care, lotions, toothpastes, cosmetics, soaps, conditioners, perfumes, deodorants, shaving foam etc. all are likely to contain chemicals that are toxic.

How Consumers Can Find Out More About Safe Products

The best line of defense against toxic chemicals is education. Understand what chemicals are toxic (and why) and learn how to recognize them when reading labels. They can often appear under alternate names, so having a reference guide handy can be helpful! I wrote "The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide" for that exact reason and with so many chemical names to remember, I still find myself quick-referencing the book when I see a product I'm not sure about!

You can also read my last blog on the most common chemicals here...

Chemicals in baby products - learn more now

What Chemicals are in Baby Products That Are Unsafe and Harmful

April 14, 2011 - One of the most often asked questions from my customers is, "What chemicals are in my baby products?" The answer, most often, is a scary one. There are many, many chemicals in commercial baby products and the health effects of these chemicals are still under investigation.

The most common chemicals in baby products are:

Parabens (methyl, ethyl, butyl, propyl, isopropyl)

SLS or SLES (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)

Fragrance (often contaminated with by-products and 1,4 Dioxane)

1,4 Dioxane

Methylisothiazolinone (chemical preservative)

Testrasodium EDTA (chemical preservative)

BHA and BHT

DEA,MEA and TEA

Formaldehyde Releasers

PEG Compunds

Petrolateum

Triclosan

Siloxanes

Phthalates

Oxybenzone

The worse part is, they can appear under different names too, so if you think you can just memorize this list - think again! The manufacturers are too clever and know that people remember names like "parabens" so they may list the ingredient as "Benzoic Acid" for instance. Same thing - different name!

Baby Products That Contain Chemicals

Another common question is, "What baby products contain chemicals?" Again, the answer is scary- "most of them." The fact is, if they products are sold on your local store shelves and make by big corporations, they most likely contain a slew of the above mentioned chemicals.

The following baby products often contain chemicals:

Bubble bath

Soaps, washes

Shampoos, hair conditioner

lotions, creams, diaper ointments

Diaper wipes

Sunscreens, and bug repellants

Health Risks of Baby Products Containing Toxic Chemicals

The health risks from baby products that contain chemicals vary and further research is being done on many of them chemicals due to consumer concern. Although the governments allow most of these chemicals " in moderate doses" and say that they are "not expected to be harmful", the very, very sad truth is: "The chemicals have not been proven to be safe - period." The government and big companies will say they aren't proven to cause health risks, but at the same time, they haven't proven to NOT cause health problems either!

Parabens were considered safe to use as preservatives for years and in North America are still allowed for use in personal care and cosmetics. Recently, in 2010, Denmark became the first company to ban the use of parabens in products that were intended for infants ages 0-3 years old. Parabens are expected to be endocrine disruptors and alter the hormonal system.

Other health hazards of chemicals are:

Skin irritations, eczema and rashes

Lung irritation and problems breathing

Eyes, ears, nose irritation

Cancer concerns

Toxic to environment and wildlife

Neurotoxicity

Damage to reproductive organs

Damage to organs

Allergic reactions, headaches, nausea, dizziness

Fragrance - the Deadliest Poison in Baby Products

One of the worst chemicals is fragrance/parfum. Sure, we like things to smell good and we like our babies to smell good - but at what cost? Fragrances are considered "trade secrets" and the government does not force manufactures to put all the ingredients used in creating a fragrance. Many fragrances are made up of many chemicals, some of which interact with each other to produce questionable by-products.

A common chemical used in fragrances are phthalates, which help the fragrance linger and last longer. Phthalates are linked to hormonal disruption, reproductive damage, live and kidney failure in young children, obesity, insulin resistance in men and are harmful to our environment.

The government does not feel consumers have a right to know what is in a fragrance and therefore, it remains a mystery. Some fragrances are used as 'masking agents', used to mask the scent. They contain chemicals designed to fool your brain so it can not perceive the actual scent of the product! Sneaky.

If you need to choose fragrances, choose essential oil blends only. A reputable company will include all the essential oils on the labeling. If anything says fragrance or parfum, you know it is synthetic and contains toxic chemicals. Those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) get very sick and ill when exposed to chemicals like fragrances; it can be disabling for some.

Do These Chemicals Only Show up in Baby Products

Nope. Pretty much everything on store shelves for personal care, made by big corporations will contain these chemicals. Don't let the words "natural", "organic", "botanical", "herbal", "essential" or other keywords fool you either - many marketers have jumped on the "green wagon" and are now packaging their products to look safe and natural by putting pictures of green leaves, grasses and the such. A product may contain some organic products, but also contain chemicals. It may be scented with essential oils, but still contain added fragrance and unfortunately, the government does nothing to stop this apparent misleading advertising, designed to fool the general public.

The Government Would Not Allow Unsafe Chemicals in Baby Products

Right. (Sarcasm). The government as we've already mentioned, believes most of these products to not be a health threat when used in the concentrations they provide. However, many chemicals accumulate in the body and build up over time. Plus, if you use a dozen products a day, each containing the "allowable concentration" then your exposure is surely higher than the "allowed amount."

The FDA states it does not have the ability to monitor all the products on the market and manufacturers are not required to submit testing and ingredients before introducing products to the market. Often, banned chemicals such as lead and higher concentrations of formaldehyde are in products and readily used (unknowingly) by consumers.

Years ago, the government placed no restrictions on cigarette smoke and 2nd hand cigarette smoke. Parents smoked in houses and cars with the windows rolled up, while the children and babies sucked it all in. Now, years later, it's admitted by the same government that yes, cigarette smoke and 2nd hand cigarette smoke is bad for your health, your kids' health and developing fetus' health.
This book is designed to discuss the most common chemicals in products and gives the alternate names they may appear under on labels. It is designed to give the reader a better understanding not only of the chemicals in everyday products, but also to provide education and resources to learning more and discovering where to find safer products.
Focus Formula Back in Stock: Canada

Photo: Focus formula Canada

The manufacturer had a shortage a few weeks ago and as a result, ran out of many products for their retailers and customers. Natural e GREEN has been waiting a couple of weeks for the back-orders to fill and once it was filled, it was quickly sold out.

We had placed a 2nd order before we even received the first back-order, since our customers were already waiting on so much. Thanks to Native Remedies fast-shipping options, we received our 2nd order today and have lots of Native Remedies in stock. (Though I'm sure we'll soon be ordering more again!)

So yay! "Native Remedies Focus, Brightspark and Mindsoothe are back in stock in Canada @ Natural e GREEN!" Thank you for your patience!

Focus Formula for ADHD /ADD Children

Photo: Mindsoothe Jr ADHD

Focus formula is made by Native Remedies and used to help children focus and concentrate better. It is not ADHD/ADD specific, but many parents who are looking for alternative remedies to treat their child's ADHD or ADD are using Focus formula.

The Focus formula is often used in combination with Brightspark and/or Mindsoothe; depending on your child's symtpoms.

Other Native Remedies to Treat ADHD or ADD Naturally

The other products to treat ADHD and ADD symptoms are Brightspark and Mindsoothe Jr. If your child is over the age of 12 they would want to use Mindsoothe (caplets).

Photo: Brightspark

While the Focus formula is designed to help sharpen focus and attention, Brightspark helps to take away some of the extra energy that can interfere with your child's ability to concentrate. It also takes away the impulsive urges and spontaneous actions to a degree.

Mindsoothe is designed to create a calm and balanced mood; taking away anger outbursts and feelings of anger and frustration as well as self-pity. It is not to be used if the individual is currently on anti-depressants (since it contains St. John's Wort, a natural anti-depressant.)

Photo: ADHD Help Book

Natural e GREEN @ the Airdrie Farmers Market 2011

Natural e GREEN @ the Airdrie Farmer's Marktet 2011

April 11, 2011 - Natural e GREEN will be appearing at the 2011 Airdrie Farmer's Market. After numerous requests from customers last year and this year, we have decided to get an outdoor tent and bring all of our stock to the market.

The Airdrie Farmer's Market in Airdrie Alberta

Photo: Natural e GREEN @ Airdrie Farmers Market 2011

What times does the market start?

This year, in 2011, the market will start on June 1st and run every Wednesday from 3:30 to 7:30pm. Natural e GREEN will be @ the market for most of the days except the first two Wednesdays in August. The Airdrie market features a wide range of vendors including fresh breads, baked goods, syrups, candies, fresh produce and more.

Where is the Market Located?

It is held @ the Airdrie Legion, located just off of Edmonton Trail. The parking lot features many outdoor vendors and inside the legion's banquet room you will find many more vendors offering arts, crafts and other goods.

In 2009, just after Natural e GREEN opened, we had a table inside the Legion. The problem with being inside for us was there was not enough room for our customers to shop comfortably and space was limited so we could not bring all the products we wanted to.

Natural e GREEN Airdrie Farmer's Market 2011

This year, we will be able to bring most of our product line and will be able to display our cosmetics properly, so you can browse, see samples and buy the colors you are interested in. We will be brining:
Why children lie - Tamara Laschinsky

April 11, 2011 – If your child lies, he is not alone. Most children lie at some point in their lives but parents have a hard time recognizing when the lying is becoming problematic.

Reasons Why Children Lie and Not Tell The Truth

When your child is younger, it is normal for her to lie and not always tell the truth. At a younger age, they often can not distinguish between reality and fantasy, and as a result, their lies are quite innocent.

As kids get older, around 5 to 6 years of age, they get a better grip on reality and understand the difference between reality and fantasy. They also begin to develop a conscience and feel guilt when they’ve done something wrong. Children may, at this age, begin telling lies to avoid punishment.

By the time your child is 7 or 8 years old, he should have a good grip on fantasy and reality and should tell the truth. It is common to want to avoid punishments and tell lies to avoid disapproval. At this age, kids also understand the concept of social lying: lying to be kind to someone’s feelings.

How to Stop Kids From Lying and Not Telling the Truth

You can help your kid(s) avoid lying by following some simple guidelines. Remember that lying is part of normal development and in most cases, not a problem that can not be overcome.

Be a Good Role Model

Your child will look to your for guidance, so be sure to be a good role model. Keep your word and if, for some reason, your intentions fall through, apologize and explain to your child why your promise was broken. Even simple things, like promising a trip to a store and then always changing the plans, can be seen by your child as “inconsistent” and “not truthful” and may set the stage for your child not believing you in future dealings.

Encourage Your Child to Be Honest

While it’s common for children to want to avoid punishments, you must encourage your child to be honest and truthful. Teach your child to think before replying and give them a chance to recant their version of the story and to “come clean” with what really happened. It’s also important to create a safe family environment so your child feels comfortable in telling the truth.

Be sure to compliment your child when she tells the truth and if a punishment is necessary, be sure it is more mild than a punishment would be for not telling the truth.

How to Deal With Children and Kids Lying

If your child does lie; do not ignore it. Give them a chance to confess and explain the consequences for lying. As with any punishment, think before speaking. It is important that a punishment fits the situation. So if you aren’t sure about the punishment, send your child to his room while you calmly decide on a punishment. Many parents react spontaneously and hand out “unreasonable” punishments, which are hard to enforce and may lead to arguments from the child.

Don’t lecture your child and remember the simple rule: KISS – Keep It Short and Simple! While you may want to drone on and on about the issue, your child will begin to lose focus and get lost in what you are saying. Keep it short and simple, hand out the punishment and walk away. Make sure your child understands why lying is wrong and have her apologize for her actions.

Problem Lying With Child and Kids

Sometimes, children lie compulsively (known as compulsive or habitual lying) and you may need to get further assistance in curbing the problem. Older kids and teens may lie to get attention or to hide something such as bullying or drug abuse. They may also lie to get what they want and take advantage of others.

Studies have shown that habitual liars have more white matter in their brain than those who are not habitual liars. It is believed also, that the grey matter of the brain controls the urge to lie and the same study indicates that habitual liars have a 16% decrease of grey matter in their brain.

Do Children With ADHD/ADD Lie More Often?

Children with ADHD or ADD have shown to have lower dopamine levels in their brain. Dopamine is responsible for functions such as “motivation and rewards” and lower levels may make your child more susceptible to not doing something because she can not understand the merit in doing so.

This may also explain why some children with ADHD or ADD tend to lie, as they just don’t see the point in telling the truth and being honest. Helping them to understand the importance of telling the truth and praising them for such actions, is a good step in curbing the lying.

How to Help Children and Kids Who Lie

There are many options to help your child curb his lying problem. You may need to look at individual and/or family counseling. Group therapy is another good alternative for your child if he is lying to get attention. You may also want to get your child assessed to rule out any learning disabilities. Sometimes, children who have a problem learning or understanding, will lie to cover up for the problem.

Check out formaldehyde releasing chemicals

April 9, 2011 – Today there is so much talk about chemicals in cosmetics, personal care products and baby products, but how are consumers to know what is safe and what isn’t? According to Tamara Laschinsky, owner of Natural e GREEN and author of ‘The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide’, understanding the chemical ingredients, their health risks and alternate names is a good start to safer product selection.

Common Chemical in Cosmetic and Personal Care Products: Formaldehyde Releasers

For the most part, formaldehyde in Canadian products, may not exceed 0.2% concentration. Nail hardeners may contain up to 5% concentration. In the European Union, any product that exceed 0.05% must carry the label “contains formaldehyde“.

Often, though, formaldehyde is not added as a direct ingredient, but shows up as a by-product. There are no regulations in place that set restrictions when formaldehyde shows up as a by-product.

What is Formaldehyde and Why is it Dangerous to Human Health?

Photo: Dangers of Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde occurs naturally in the environment and is a preservative, used to prevent bacteria growth. Is it a known human carcinogen and also causes:

Skin irritation and burns

Respiratory hazards

Immune system toxicant

Cardiovascular hazard

Neurotoxic effects

Environmental toxin

Photo: Randomtruth with permission

What Products Contain Formaldehyde Releasing Ingredients?

Formaldehyde releasing ingredients can appear in most any products including:

Baby bath products

Adult bath products

Hair Care

Cosmetics

Diaper Wipes

Lotions

Sunscreens

How Can you Tell if Your Product Contains Formaldehyde Releasing Ingredients

There are a few names to look for on your product label to see if formaldehyde is present: Formalin, Oxomethane, Formica, BFV, DMDM hydantoin, Diazolindinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl urea, Methenamine, Quaternium-15, 1 3 Dimethylol and more.

If you are concerned you should consider picking up a copy of The Cosmetic Chemicals Guide to use as quick reference when you are out shopping.

Brazilian Blowout Hair Care Had High Levels of Formldehyde

In October 2010, Brazilian Blowout, a hair straightening product, received global news coverage, when it was found the formula contained up to 10.6 % formaldehyde. According to regulations, salon workers must be notified if any product contains higher than 0.1% formaldehyde.

When Health Canada tested the formula, after receiving many consumer complaints, they found Brazilian Blowout actually contained 12% concentration of formaldehyde. It was banned from entering Canada.

Despite the dangers, some salons were still offering the treatment and offering it @ discounted rates (obviously trying to sell out their useless stock.) Salon workers are always encouraged to wear mask and goggles, since no product can be guaranteed to not contain formaldehyde.

ADHD or ADD is a common childhood disorder that affect roughly five to eight percent of school age children. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that almost two million children are affected by ADHD or ADD in the United States.

Children with ADHD or ADD may experience symptoms such as not being able to sit still for long, always interrupting and not waiting their turns, not appearing to listen, starting work without waiting for directions to be finished, losing objects often and daydreaming. Although it's estimated that at least one child in each classroom is likely to have ADHD/ADD, there is also a big chance for misdiagnosing ADHD or ADD.

Diagnosing ADHD or ADD in Kids

Photo: DSM-IV to Diagnose ADHD

Only a medical professional can assess and diagnose a child with ADHD/ADD. You should not begin any ADHD or ADD treatment until you have had your child properly diagnosed. Other medical issues may be present that look like ADHD but in fact, they are different and should be treated as so. Your doctor will require a patient history as well as a survey of questions to be answered by parents, teachers and caregivers. Your child will be compared to their peers and the severity of their symptoms will be weighed against a coding chart to see if they fall in the ADHD/ADD range.

Treating ADHD or ADHD in Children

Photo: ADHD Drug Ritalin

If your child is diagnosed with ADHD or ADD there are many options available to you. You will have to get the most information you can to make a decision you are comfortable with. Your doctor will most likely recommend pharmaceutical medications, however, with most of these drugs being relatively new and the long-term effects not fully understood, many parents are looking for 'natural' alternatives. Unlike pharmaceutical medications, most 'natural' remedies do not carry the risk of side effects, some of which with prescribed drugs can be very serious and even fatal. Be sure to do your research on whatever pharmaceutical drugs you are considering and don't just listen to your doctor, who is just repeating what the pharmaceutical companies have told him.

Using Native Remedies to Treat ADHD or ADD in Kids

Native Remedies is a homeopathic, natural and alternative treatment for ADHD and ADD in kids. They formulas are often sold in liquid form and added to juice or milk and taken a couple of times a day. The idea is to replenish the body with needed elements to help everything come in to balance.

Focus Formula ADHD

Focus Formula For Kids With ADHD or ADD

Children with ADHD or ADD can benefit from using Focus Formula if they experience loss of attention. Focus formula will help to sharpen their focus and enable them to concentrate better. As a mother of a child with ADHD, we found using Focus in combination with Brightspark worked best, as the Brightspark helped take away a good deal of the "disruptive" hyperactivity that also interfered with focus and attention. The formula is in liquid form and added to the child's juice or milk three times a day. For children and adults, 12 years and older, you would use FocusADDult formula.

Brightspark for Kids With ADHD or ADD

Brightspark ADHD

Brightspark is a designed to help control impulsivity and hyperactivity in children. The extra energy running through a child's body will often cause him to lose focus and attention and get in the way of completing required tasks. The Brightspark formula helps to take some of that disruptive energy away; allowing your child to have better control over his body and thoughts. It comes in tiny white, dissolve-able tablets and are placed under the tongue three times a day.

Mindsoothe Jr for Kids with ADHD or ADD

Mindsoothe Jr ADHD

Another good natural remedy for children with ADHD or ADD is a formula called Mindsoothe Jr. It comes in liquid form as well and is designed to help balance mood in children. If your child experiences mood swings, anger outbursts, frustrations or the defiant "its not my fault" attitude, Mindsoothe Jr is designed to help mellow that down. Mindsoothe Jr is added to milk or juice and taken twice a day. It does contain St. John's Wort, so if your child is taking any anti-depressants, you should not use this product. For kids older than 12 years old, they would use the Mindsoothe product that comes in capsule form.
Cold sore virus linked to Alzheimer's connection. Treat cold sores naturally with tea tree oil

Alzheimer Connection: Using Tea Tree Oil to Help Heal Cold Sores Naturally

April 6, 2011 - If you've ever suffered from a cold sore you know how irritating, painful and unsightly the can be. They are also very difficult to treat and can take weeks to heal. Tea tree oil is used by many cultures to heal skin disorders including cold sores. See why tea tree oil can help heal cold sores naturally.

What is Tea Tree Oil?

Photo: Tea Tree Oil

Tea Tree oil, also known as Melaleuca oil, comes from the species M. alternifolia that is native to coastal Australia. It is toxic when ingested orally, according to Drugs.com, and should be used according to instructions.

Tea tree oil has been used for centuries as an antimicrobial, to treat a variety for ailments such as nail infections, athlete's foot, fungal skin infections and acne. Many use it to treat head lice naturally as well. Some recommend it to kill bacteria in the mouth but tea tree oil should not be ingested as it can be harmful and even fatal to some.

What Causes Cold Sores?

Cold sores, also called fever blisters, are caused by the herpes simplex virus. The Mayo Clinic indicates that once you are infected by the herpes virus, you will have it for life and cold sore will come and go, depending on triggering factors. This type of herpes is considered "type 1" and is not the same as genital herpes, which is a "type 2" herpes simplex virus.

Photo: Catching cold sore virus

You can catch the cold sore virus by coming into direct contact with something an infected person used such as a drinking cup, straw, lip balm, lipstick, kissing, sharing eating utensils, razors and towels. Once infected, the virus lays dormant until it is triggered to erupt. Some triggers include stress, fever, menstruation, fatigue and exposure to the sun.

Health Hazards of Cold Sores

Photo: Cold Sores

Cold sore can can get infected and may require special medication to get better. The greatest risk of infection is when the cold sore blister appears until the time the cold sore has completely crusted over. People with suppressed immune systems are at great risk of developing infections.

Photo: Alzheimer's Disease

A recent study, published in the March 31 issue of the journal PLoS ONE, indicates that the cold sore virus has a link to Alzheimer's disease. It is not fully understood yet just how much of an involvement the herpes virus play sin Alzheimer's, but research did show the active virus entered the nerve that travels to the brain. Scientists are still researching the link between cold sores and Alzheimer's disease but for now, they strongly recommend treating cold sores as quickly as possible to reduce how long the virus is active.

How to Treat a Cold Sore Naturally

The important thing with cold sores is to keep the area clean and dry to prevent infection and splitting of the skin around the infected area. Washing with warm soap and water will help keep your cold sore clean and provide some relief at the same time. Your doctor may prescribe other medications as well.

As for a natural treatment, and the link between tea tree oil and cold sores, I personally use All Things Jill Shaving Ouch Balm to treat my cold sores! I don't know why, but guaranteed, every time I floss my teeth and accidentally cut my lip, I get a cold sore the next day. You'd think I'd learn by now!

Photo: Natural Cold Sore Remedy

Once the cold sore appears, I start applying the All Things Jill Ouch Shaving Balm, which is a mixture of tea tree oil in a base of beeswax and other oils. Designed to help heal shaving cut and other nicks and scrapes, I started using this when I heard that tea tree oil may help heal cold sores. Not wanting to use too high a concentration of tea tree oil at first, I tried this Ouch Shaving Balm.

First, the balm keeps the area moist which prevents it from cracking and splitting. I know others say to keep the area completely dry, but that only encourages cracking and splitting and makes recovery time longer. But, you don't want to keep the area moist with anything that "locks in" the virus and allows it grow either.

Second, this balm is great because not only does it keep the cold sore moist but it also continually applies tea tree oil to the infected area; preventing the virus from growing and gently disabling it!

My cold sores usually only hang around for 24-48 hours, which is a HUGE improvement from the 2-3 weeks it used to take to make them go away. I attribute this largely in part to keeping the area moist in a sterile setting. Cold sores that are left to dry out will crack and bleed; taking longer to heal. They also make eating and drinking uncomfortable for the individual who is infected.

The best natural eczema remedy as far as I'm concerned and not just because I sell it - it's the reason I DO sell it! :)

Natural Eczema Remedy: Organic Unrefined Shea Butter

April 5, 2011 - If you have ever suffered from Eczema or know someone who does, you know how painful it can be and how difficult it can be to get rid of. There are many creams out there to try and some are prescription cortisone creams that you can only get from doctors. However, cortisone is not something you want to get dependent one so try this natural remedy for eczema first!

Organic Unrefined Shea Butter For Natural Eczema Treatment

Photo: Shea Butter Unrefined

Coming from the shea tree, shea butter contains Vitamin A and Vitamin E, but if it is refined, it loses most of its natural vitamins and minerals. The American Shea Butte Institute indicates that unrefined shea butter can be used to treat many skin conditions including wrinkles, dermatitis, blemishes and eczema. It has also been used to treat frostbites, sunburns and insect bites.

You can tell if a shea butter has been refined or not, from it's color, texture and scent. Unrefined shea butter will not be white. It will range in colors from light beige to a darker brown. The scent can be a little "nutty" and texture will be hard. Not everyone likes the scent of shea butter and this is one of the reasons why manufacturers refine shea butter - to remove some of the scent and add their own fragrances. However, in refining the shea butter, you lose many of the healing properties as well.

Using Unrefined Shea Butter to Treat Eczema

Eczema can flare up at any time and there are many reasons why you may develop eczema. Sometimes it can be a reaction to a certain type of clothing, fragrance or a food allergy. Heat and moisture can also flare up eczema as well as cold temperatures.

For some reason, this past summer, I developed eczema on the knuckles of my hands. I will attribute it to our dry Alberta winters as I spoke with many locals who were also suffering from the same condition this winter.

As a child and teen-ager, I suffered from eczema quite often and it was painful, irritating and unsightly. Occasionally I had to use cortisone creams and lotions but since switching to chemical-free and fragrance free products, I have not had any eczema issues, nor have my children.

This past summer, my knuckles got very dry, then cracked and red and painful! Nothing I used was helping, everything I tried would only irritate my skin and make my hands worse and more painful each day. I heard about shea butter in its unrefined state so I ordered some in from our supplier, Pure Anada and decided to give that a try.

Pure Anada's Organic Unrefined Shea Butter for Eczema

Photo: Pure Anada Shea Butter

Pure Anada is the manufacturer of the cosmetic we carry. I know her product and it is amazing and top quality. I ordered a few of the shea butters and to say I was more than 100% impressed would be an understatement!

First things first, I applied the shea butter to my hands a couple of times a day. Within 24 hours, the pain and itching had diminished and by day 2 - the pain and itching were gone altogether! (Phew!) Over the next week I noticed my hands getting better. The cracks were healing and I had no more itching at all. Within 2 weeks my hands were normal again! I used the shea butter as a moisturizer after that and still use it on my hands.

What really impressed me with Pure Anada's Organic Unrefined Shea Butter:

Value - You get 4oz of unrefined organic shea butter for an awesome price. (other products on the market give you 3 oz for a higher price and they are creamy & white - meaning they've been refined!)

Scent - The scent is not that strong at all. Not bad for an unrefined shea butter!

Tin Packaging - keeps product cool and from spoiling

Awesome results - it really works!

Using Shea Butter for Other Skin Conditions

You can use shea butter for other skin conditions and even day-to-day moisturizing. It can be a nice diaper cream for babies as it provides a nice barrier and moisturizes at the same time - healing the skin as it goes. Any skin irritations can benefit from shea butter.

Recently, after my 3-year old daughter decided to keep sticking her face in the snow repeatedly, I used the shea butter for the frostbite on her cheeks! I was skeptical because her cheeks were very read with white patches and the skin looked quite a bit damaged. I applied some shea butter to her cheeks after they warmed up and applied more when she woke from her nap. Her skin looks normal now, there are no dry patches or frostbite scars!

Pure Anada's Organic and Unrefined Shea Butter is now a staple in our household and I leave a container in our main kitchen area for everyone to use. Dry patches, eczema flare-ups, rashes, cuts, scrapes and whatever else makes our skin irritated - we have the Shea Butter to combat it!
