10% of kids live with an alcoholic parent

More than ten percent of US children live with an alcoholic parent and are at increased risk of developing an array of health problems of their own. This is according to a new study released by the government.

Researchers at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) analyzed national survey data from 2005 through 2010 and found that 7.5 million children or about one in ten are living with a parent who is alcohol addicted during any given year. Many of the kids pointed out in the survey lived in a two parent household where one or even both of the parents had a drinking problem. The children in this category number an average of 6.1 million.

The balance of the kids, 1.4 million of them, lived in a single-parent home where that single parent had a drinking disorder. The overwhelming majority of these parents is a mom.

Children living with alcoholics are at greater risk for becoming alcoholics themselves. Even before that they are at risk of developing such mental disorders as depression and anxiety. These children are also more likely to be abused or neglected by their alcoholic parents as rational judgment diminishes with alcohol use and violence increases. These children are also more likely to have cognitive and language deficiencies, developing skills later than their peers.

And as far as becoming alcoholics themselves one day, they are four times more likely than their friends who live in non-alcoholic homes to develop a drinking problem of their own.

Diet soft drinks lead to cardiac failure

Well, they are delicious and refreshing so we knew they couldn’t be good for us. It appears that people who drink diet soft drinks on a daily basis are at an increased risk for suffering stroke, heart attack, and vascular death. However, the key might be the quantity of diet beverage and in the end moderation is key.

Naturally, as we realize we are fat, we turn to the reduced calorie or calorie free alternatives to help reduce the risks of obesity. However, the long term health consequences of this choice, regardless of the good intention, is unclear.

A team from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Columbia University Medical Center looked at the relationship between both diet and regular soft drinks. They evaluated the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction and vascular death by people who drank these beverages. They found that people who drank diet drinks were 43% more likely to have experienced a vascular event than people who drank no diet soft drinks. The occasional diet soft drinker or the person who chose regular soft drinks were not more likely to suffer a heart attack or vascular event.

“Our results suggest a potential association between daily diet soft drink consumption and vascular outcomes. However the mechanisms by which soft drinks may affect vascular events are unclear. There is a need for further research before any conclusions can be drawn regarding the potential health consequences of diet soft drink consumption,” reassured Hannah Gardener from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where the study was conducted.

Therapy alleviates stress and helps to solve and manage mental health problems. Since one in ten Americans are diagnosed with mental health issues, there is a great need for intervention but waiting for appointments can be difficult when you need help and many people do not have access to good therapists. Online therapy is a great solution.

Sessions in HD video

This week, TherapyHub.com launches its online therapy platform. The site offers live HD video therapy sessions with professional, licensed therapists. You can get an appointment whenever and wherever, whether you're at home or on the road. Chat sessions are also available.

Schedule an online therapy appointment when you need it

Therapists are online 7 days per week including evenings and weekends. This addresses the difficulty that irregular schedules impose on people who travel for a living; even if you are constantly on the road you can develop a long-term relationship with a therapist. If you have a laptop, your therapist is available.

Website navigation should not contribute to stress, especially when the user is looking for help. TherapyHub.com is designed with ease of use in mind. A variety of online therapists who employ an array of therapeutic approaches are ready for video, audio or text conversations.

Find the online therapist who is right for you

You can select the therapist that you feel most comfortable with by reading through profiles and reviews. You also have an opportunity to write your own therapist reviews.

TherapyHub.com also features a comprehensive therapist directory of over 30,000 licensed therapists in the United States and Canada.

Ask the therapist

In addition to choosing a therapist for one-on-one private therapy, you can also submit a question that will be answered by a licensed therapist, free of charge. TherapyHub.com is active now and counselors are on call to help.

Breastfeeding reduces asthma risk

Breastfed kids have better lung function and lower risk of asthma when compared to formula babies. Two new studies reveal their results this month.

Past studies have found conflicting results when it comes to the benefits of breastfeeding on the development of lung function. Some research suggests that moms with asthma who breastfeed may actually be putting their kids at risk. New research contradicts this. Babies with asthmatic moms get just as much benefit from breastfeeding, maybe even more, when compared to asthma-free moms.

“I think the evidence is that breastfeeding increases lung volume, independent of if the mother is asthmatic or not,” said Dr. Wilfried Karmaus, who studies asthma at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. “If the lung volume is increased, then you are less susceptible to get asthma. It’s important even to tell asthmatic mothers to breast feed their children.”

One long term study out of the UK followed 1500 kids from birth to age 8 to 14 through surveys and physical exams. Dr. Claudia Kuehni from the University of Bern, Switzerland and her team found that the longer kids were breastfed, the better they performed on the measure of speed of air coming out of the lungs. Better lung function was not related to the a history of fewer childhood respiratory infections which seems reassuring.

The lung boost provided by breastfeeding might not make a difference to a healthy kid, but kids susceptible to lung disease, the breastfeeding may provide protection.

In a second study from New Zealand, researchers also tracked children from birth to age six but rather than testing the kids, they were surveyed for particular kinds of symptoms. They found exclusive breastfeeding was linked to a 9% drop in asthma risk.
