Though it's hard to believe, summer is winding down already. Schools are setting up and football season is just around the corner. Use this house cleaning checklist to help your clean for the changing seasons:

Clean behind your washer and dryer: Wipe down each appliance and vacuum or sweep the area around your washer and dryer.
Clean out your refrigerator/freezer: Toss out old food and containers/bottles that haven't been touched in awhile. Use a spray bottle of vinegar and water (3 parts water to 1 part vinegar) to wipe down all of the shelves and drawers inside your fridge. If you have frozen food or meat that you haven't touched in at least three months, throw it away.
Flip your mattress: Flipping your mattress each season extends the life of your mattress. While you're doing that, thoroughly vacuum it. Dust mites irritate allergies and vacuuming can prevent this problem.
Clean out your cupboards: Remove everything and clean the shelves using your vinegar spray. This disinfects, removes dust and helps prevent bugs.. Toss out spices or baking mixes that are over nine months old.
Change the batteries: Just as you flip your mattress twice a year, it's also time to change the batteries on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. This step is most important as it could save lives.

Tips on Housekeeping Between Cleaning Service Visits

Congratulations! You've made the decision to hire a cleaning service. Now you won't need to spend your entire Saturday catching up on the dust and grime! Go outside. Enjoy nature. Have a picnic with your family or go water skiing. Your house is sparkling clean and you have a day to enjoy the rest and relaxation that life brings!

Yes, the cleaning service has come in and done all those tasks that just don't get done daily.. the tops of your door frames, polishing the chrome, disinfecting light switches and door knobs. It's beautiful and fresh! But wait.... What's going to happen to the house tomorrow? What about those daily task that need to be done?

Three Supplies

In the kitchen and each bathroom, keep a spray bottle of 50/50 water and vinegar in your kitchen and each bathroom. You can add a few drops of your favorite essential oils for added cleaning, disinfecting and fragrance benefits but the vinegar and water will do just fine.
Keep a large bottle of vinegar under the kitchen sink for refilling the spray bottles and mopping your floors.
Microfiber cloths. The tiny ridges grab everything from dirt and dust to food. They are quicker than the quicker-picker-upper! (And more earth-friendly!)

Five To-Do's on your Cleaning List

Wipe your counters before you sit down. Don't sit down to eat or to watch TV after dinner until you've spritzed your counters with your spray bottle and wiped them. You don't have to wipe under things but certainly wipe the splatters, spills and crumbs that you dropped along the way. (Note: If you have natural stone counters, keep the vinegar out of your bottle and use a few drops of castile soap instead.)

Spray your shower when you're finished showering. Just before leaving the shower and just after, spray it down with your vinegar and water. This is a powerful way to prevent hard water and mildew buildup. You don't have to wipe.. just spray. If you're ready to clean, then go right ahead. But this is the best prevention of any buildup that may find you needing to work hard later.

Brush your teeth and wipe your counters and sink. In the morning and evening, once you've brushed your teeth, use your sprayer and microfiber. Spray and wipe. It takes only a minute and you're done!

Sweep or vacuum your kitchen and around your table after meals. After dinner, spray a damp mop and use on those areas. I know this sounds like a lot but it only takes 5 minutes (that's 15 minutes of your entire day) to do this small task. It really makes a difference.

Vacuum your living room each morning. If company drops in unexpectedly, your place looks fabulous!

In all our years of cleaning, I've come to find that it's the floors that make the difference. A house can be grungy but shine those floors and the castle looks fit for a king!

How to Clean an Oven Naturally

Our cleaning teams are often asked how to clean an oven without harsh chemicals. Below you'll find a list of recipes for natural oven cleaning. These are not my recipes but various recipes found elsewhere. I've used them without issue and with great results. Your results may vary.

The Old Standby Oven Cleaner

5 TBSP Baking soda
4 TBSP White vinegar
3 drops hand soap or liquid dish soap

Mix ingredients until they form a thick paste. Apply paste to inside of oven and scrub. Wipe clean and rinse thoroughly.

Heavy Duty Stain Cleaner

1cup Salt
1cup Baking soda
1cup Water

Make a paste using the ingredients and apply to the inside of the oven. Close door and heat oven to 500-degrees for 60 minutes. Turn off oven and allow to cool. Wipe debris from oven using a moist cloth or sponge. Rinse well.

Overnight Sensation

1 cup of baking soda
1/2 cup of washing soda
3 tablespoon liquid dish soap
Hot water
1/4 cup of white vinegar

Remove all loose foods, crumbs, etc from oven first. Combine all the dry ingredients and gradually add hot water until a thick paste is formed. For really greasy ovens, you can add another 1/4 cup of the washing soda. Add vinegar (yes, it will fizz). While oven is cool, coat all oven surfaces with the mixture. Leave overnight. The next morning, use warm water to wipe it clean.

Four Green Cleaning Myths Debunked

"Do green cleaning products work?"
"Are they more expensive?"
"Is it really worth switching?"
"I'll probably spend more time scrubbing because they won't work as well."

You may be considering making the switch to green cleaning but have heard some things which cause you to hesitate. Perhaps you've heard nothing negative but have formulated your own ideas which hold you back. Today we debunk the myths!

1. Green cleaning products don't work. While there are a lot of green products on the market, there is also a lot of green washing. As individuals, we need to be aware of what's on the market. As well, there are some products which are truly eco-friendly but don't deliver the punch needed for cleaning. Sometimes, you may find a product that you love but the other products in that brand's range don't deliver. It can be a trial and error situation. For the most part, I like to stick with the basics from my cupboard. I'm never disappointed.

2. Modern products are more effective than natural cleaners. I have found this to be completely untrue. In fact, in cleaning homes for 8 years as a green service and countless years of cleaning prior to "going green", I can honestly say, my job is easier because of natural cleaning products. Tubs that took 5 hours (yes..we get those types of homes) take me 5 minutes now. A home which originally took 3-4 hours to clean takes only 45-60 minutes. By using natural cleaning products, I eliminate most of the time and physical effort. I've tested this out several times. I hope to post videos of the difference soon.

3. Bleach is necessary for disinfecting. Wrong. Bleach is needed for nothing. Health dangers aside, bleach is ineffective as a cleaner and disinfectant. Bleach can kill mold on hard, non-porous surfaces but is far less effective on porous surfaces. It simply cannot penetrate into porous surfaces. The EPA doesn't even have bleach listed as a disinfectant against mold.

Also, bleach becomes ineffective when it comes into contact with organic material. What this means that in order for bleach to work at all, you must first completely clean the surface before applying the bleach because once it touches dirt, food or any other organic matter, it ceases to work. (Also, you must leave the bleach on the surface for 10 minutes in order for it to kill germs.) Tea tree oil and other essential oils, on the other hand, clean and disinfect regardless of organic matter. There is no need to clean before you clean. Vinegar is a much better bet and Hydrogen Peroxide is mold's mortal enemy.

4. Green cleaning is expensive. Making your own cleaners using vinegar, water and a few drops of essential oil cost pennies per bottle to make and is an effective all-purpose cleaner. Don't have essential oils? Just use vinegar and water. Sprinkling some baking soda followed by vinegar in the bath or toilet costs only pennies, too.

There are plenty of green products on the market that may, at first, seem expensive. They're usually concentrated, which means they last longer and cost less per use than toxic cleaners.. Even so, many of the green companies have been able to set competitive prices due to the higher demand for natural products we're seeing nowadays. Method and Seventh Generation, for instance offer products in the same price range as their toxic counterparts. Bon Ami costs less than other powder scrubbing cleaners (and I never have to actually scrub!). Also, these products last longer than the bottles of toxic cleaners which require more product per use and more elbow grease. They're real money and time savers!

All in all, it has been my personal experience from use and comparison, that green cleaning is far less expensive, requires less physical effort, requires less time and they work better than conventional cleaners.

6 Reasons to Line Dry Your Laundry

I love line drying my clothes. For me, being outdoors in the warmth of the sun with no sounds except the breeze through the trees or the occasional dragonfly flitting to and fro brings me a few minutes of peace and quiet from this hectic world. But there is also so much benefit to line drying your clothes. Here are 6 great reasons to line dry your laundry.

Save Money. Many households can save more than $25/month by hanging clothes out to dry rather than using a dryer. In my home, I've tested this out over the last 7 months (mind you, we have 6 people living here) to find out what the difference would be. My electric bill during the 2 months I used the dryer exclusively, were $349 (August 2011) and $282 (December 2011). The months in which I used the clothesline exclusively saw bills of $150 - $180. That's a huge difference! Each home will see a different savings, of course, but you'll save no matter what!

Clothes last longer. When dryers are used, the friction between the clothing and the suction from the exhaust air of the dryer pulls the particles of cotton fiber away from the textiles. By line drying, you're preventing the majority of fiber loss in your clothing.

Naturally fresh. There are those who would argue that the smell of laundry off the line is similar to that of a wet dog. I agree. However, I've tested this out as well. If I bring my clothing in as soon as it's dried, it does have that funky smell. However, if I leave it out for a few more hours (or even all day!) the clothing does smell fresh and clean. Just let the sun and wind have time to do their job.

Conserves Energy. I'm sure that if I did the research, I could bring you all the scientific data about energy conservation. But I prefer to share more common sense experience. If I dry my clothes in my dryer, it takes approximately 45 minutes to dry a load of clothing and 60 minutes for towels. However, if I hang the clothing on the line on a breezy or sunny day, they're dry in 10 minutes.

Less Chemicals: No dryer sheets and fabric softener needed! (And with their criminal list of toxic ingredients, this is a great thing!) If you are concerned about softness, simply pour a 1/2 cup of vinegar into your washer's softener compartment or into the rinse cycle. Your clothes will line dry nice and soft. Another thing that I do to guarantee the softness of towels, is to toss them into the dryer on "air dry" for 5-10 minutes with Eco-Friendly Wool Dryer Balls. This super-softens and prevents static cling caused by the dryer.

Moments of peacefulness. Some may even say it's therapeutic. Doing something as basic and methodical as hanging out laundry is good for the mind and spirit. Getting away from the busy-ness of the day and into the quiet for those few minutes is just plain good for us!

Removing Rust Stains from Tubs and Sinks

Recently, our family relocated to De Bary, FL. For those who aren't local, De Bary residents have well water. Not just any well water, mind you. We have that well water that provides us with an extra special touch of iron/rust. We lived here back in the 1990's and I dealt with it as best I could at the time. I made sure there was salt in the softener and purchased a lot of rust remover. Granted, it worked fairly well but it was expensive and toxic.

Jump ahead to 2011. We're back in De Bary. I moved into a house which needed a move-in clean but I really had no time to do that prior to moving into the house. Here I am, 10 days later, just now finishing the last of the packed boxes and tackling the cleaning job bit by bit. The first thing I wanted to deal with is the rust in the tub and sink. I'll admit that rust removal (caused by well water) using only natural ingredients is a first for me. So I did some research last night. I found recipes calling for a scrubbing cleanser and other things. This is what I ended up doing for my sink.

Sprinkled Bon Ami and Cream of Tarter in the sink.
To create a paste, I sprayed Hydrogen Peroxide onto the mix.

Then I took a no-scratch pot scrubber to the surface and off came the rust! Mind you, everything I found in my research said to let the mixture stand for 30 minutes. I didn't. Even so, in the 2 minutes I was "scrubbing", the sink's appearance changed

from this...

..to this!

Imagine if I had actually let it soak? Or perhaps if I had put some real elbow grease into it?!

Later I will try those things. I was just so very pleased at the quick results that I wanted to share it with you.

Laundry Tips

Although laundry may very well be the most "hated" chore in the house (Not for me.. I LOVE laundry!), there's not much we can do to eliminate it from our lives. We may as well do the best we can and that means cleaning naturally! Here are a few natural cleaning laundry tips:

Armpit Stains on White Shirts: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." as the saying goes. The best prevention is to use a natural deodorant (I choose The Crystal.) However, everyone is free to choose their own deodorants and antiperspirants. For those, the yellow stain battle can be conquered. Add one tablespoon of vinegar and one tablespoon of lemon juice to a cup of water. Use this to pre-treat those stains. If you can let it soak overnight, this is the best idea.

**Note: This is acidic. Delicate fabrics such as silk, linen, acetate, and dyed clothing may become damaged from this pre-treatment.Wash in cold water. (Heat sets stains in permanently, so avoid hot water and do not toss into the dryer until you know the stains are gone.)

Musty Odors: Whether the laundry sat in the hamper too long or you've forgotten to switch your laundry over to the dryer, they can develop musty odors. I've found the 1 cup of vinegar in the wash will resolve all of these issues. If you're in the habit of leaving laundry in the washer for a while, a few drops of lavender oil in the wash will prevent the musty odor from developing in the first place due to the antibacterial properties of lavender oil.

Honey, I shrunk the.... : Ever shrink something in the wash? Who hasn't!? Well rather than donate your your clothing item to the landfill, try this helpful little trick. (This will not work if the garment was shrunk in the dryer.) In a large pot, combine two quarts of water with one quart of vinegar. Bring to a simmer. Add the shrunken garment and let sit for 20 minutes. When the time is up, drain the pot and let the soaked garment cool to a temperature that can be handled. Be sure not to rinse the garment. When it has cooled, dry the garment by rolling it in clean towels. Once the excess liquid has been removed, lay the garment on a clean towel and gently reshape it. Don’t worry, the vinegar scent will go away as it dries. Let the garment air dry and it should be back to its normal size!

10 Green Cleaning Tips for Your Home

Today, I thought I'd share with you top 10 list designed not only to make your cleaning more "green" but also to save a bit of green! Remember that using natural cleaners made with ingredients from your kitchen is far less expensive than purchasing toxic cleaners.

#10: Throw out those ammonia-based window cleaners! Your windows can be effectively cleaned with vinegar. You could use 50/50 water and vinegar in a spray bottle. I like to put 5-10 drops of lemon essential oil. Then when the sun heats the window, the scent fragrances and purifies the air! Another recipe is to use 4 tablespoons lemon juice mixed with a half gallon of water. Use a microfiber cloth to keep your glass lint-free!

#9: Can the furniture polish! Furniture polish is just as toxic/dangerous as drain cleaner, so I don't recommend it in your home. We use 2 parts olive oil with 1 part lemon juice as a wood polish. It gives furniture a nice scent and leaves a wonderful shine! If you're battling water stains, mix 1 part olive oil with 1 part vinegar. The vinegar dries out the water and the olive oil re-moisturizes the wood leaving a beautiful shine! For both recipes, apply using microfiber cloths.

#8: Replace your metal polishes. Metal polishes, such as those for brass, copper, stainless steel, and chrome, contain ammonia and acids. To give your brass or copper lots of shine, make a paste using equal parts of vinegar, salt and flour. Use a soft cloth to rub the paste onto the metal surface. After covering the entire surface, let it dry for about an hour. Use your microfiber to wipe off the paste. VOILA! Beautiful shine!
For lightly tarnished surfaces, dip a slice of lemon into salt and rub the item with the lemon. Rinse and dry.

#7: Reduce Clutter. What does clutter have to do with green cleaning? Often cleaning leads to throwing out items that are no longer wanted. Filling the landfills with useful items is not exactly earth-friendly. If your items are still usable, consider joining your local Freecycle group to pass them along to someone who can use them. Or donate them to your local thrift store. Also, by de-cluttering your home, you are reducing your workload during future cleanings (less stuff to clean!).

#6: Clean up the air ducts. Most of us maintain our homes on a daily basis with some tasks occurring weekly. Perhaps twice per year (spring and fall) we do a big clean. But what about your cooling and heating ducts? The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that a professional heating and cooling contractor inspect your air ducts and heating and cooling systems. Research has shown that the quality of indoor air is usually up to 10 times worse than outdoor air. A contractor can detect signs of mold, dust and other contaminants. Also, keeping the air ducts clean reduces energy consumed by your heating and cooling system.

#5: Clean and disinfect your home naturally. It's easy to replace those toxic, petroleum-based products.
For stains, mildew or grease streaks, spray with vinegar. Vinegar is an excellent disinfectant.

#4: Carpet stains can be handled by sprinkling baking soda and then pouring vinegar onto it. Watch the color fizz right up and out of your carpet! (This works for pet messes as well..and takes the odor with it!) For deodorizing rooms/carpets, sprinkle baking soda then vacuum! This will also freshen your vacuum cleaner.

#3: No more drain cleaners! Get those clogged drains moving along by pouring 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain and chase it with vinegar (as much as it takes until the fizzing stops and whatever 'gunk' breaks up or comes out). Chase that with a few cups of boiling water. As maintenance, when you're doing your weekly cleaning tasks.. do the baking soda-vinegar treatment to prevent clogs in the first place.

#2: Love your Oven: Mix a thick paste of baking soda and water. Spread it over the inside of the oven and leave it overnight to loosen grease and grime before scouring the next morning.

#1: Stock your natural cleaning kit:

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) -- scrubbing agent, reacts with acidic products such as lemon and vinegar
Borax -- disinfects, whitens and deodorizes
White vinegar -- disinfects and loosens grease and grime.
Lemons or Lemon juice -- disinfects, cuts through grease and freshens air.
Olive oil -- picks up dirt, polishes wood
Castile soap -- all-purpose cleaner

Recipe: Eucalyptus-Mint All-Purpose Cleaner

This recipe is an all-purpose, disinfecting soap for use in your kitchen and bathroom. It can be used for washing dishes, cleaning floors, refrigerator, stove, sinks, bathtub and even as a hand soap! It's very mild to the skin but a very effective cleaning product as well.

Eucalyptus and peppermint are disinfecting and if you have ever smelled this combination, you know that it's a wonderful scent! Also, these oils will keep away crawling insects, fleas and flies.

5 cups grated castile soap

1/2 cup baking soda

1 teaspoon borax

6 cups hot peppermint tea

1 teaspoon eucalyptus essential oil

Place grated soap into a 3-quart stainless steel saucepan and add hot tea. Simmer for 15 minutes. Add baking soda, borax and eucalyptus oil. Store in a plastic jug or spray bottle (be sure to label it!). Shake before using.

Green Cleaning Tip: Keeping Your Drains Unclogged

We're all about keeping toxic chemicals out of the home. So what about a clogged drain? How do we handle that? It's as easy as pie. No, wait, it's easier.

Suggestion:
Keep your drains cleaning by pouring a cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar down the drains weekly. However, should your drain somehow become clogged anyway...

Solution:
1 cup of salt
1 cup of baking soda
1 cup of vinegar

Pour the salt and baking soda into the drain and follow it with vinegar. You may add baking soda and/or vinegar as you see fit. There will be fizzing. This is what pulls out the hair, tissue or whatever is clogging. (I actually got gravel to float up from our clogged sink. It was then that we realized there was a septic tank problem. But the point is that it worked!) Allow to stand for 30 minutes. Flush with 2 quarts of boiling water. Repeat if necessary, follow the above weekly routine, this should work the first time.

Natural Cleaning: Bleach Alternatives

Many of us have grown up with chlorine bleach as a standard product for cleaning our homes. Therefore, we believe it's safe. After all, the government wouldn't permit harmful products to be on the store shelves, right? Wrong.

Today I want to share a few facts with you about chlorine bleach:

Chlorine was the first agent of chemical warfare in WWI.
When using bleach in the workplace, (Occupational Safety And Health Administration), which regulates the safety of the work place, requires that mask and gloves be worn.
Exposure to chlorine has also been strongly linked to breast cancer.
Bleach doesn't clean. It bleaches. There's a difference.
Bleach must remain on a surface for 30 minutes before it truly begins to disinfect.

This list could be much longer, but you get the point. So how do we clean our homes without committing chemical warfare against our own bodies? Here are some ideas which are healthier, easier and certainly more economical.

Cleaning
Soap and water. Sounds almost too easy, doesn't it? But how do you get your body clean? Certainly not with bleach or Mr. Get-You-Clean! Get yourself a gallon of Dr. Bronners or other castile soap you have what it takes to clean your home.

Disinfecting
We all worry about germs in our kitchen and bathroom. So get yourself a gallon of vinegar and a spray bottle. Make a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water to create all the disinfectant you'll need. Don't worry that your home will smell like italian dressing all day. Give it a few minutes to dry and the smell will be gone. I promise!

Mold
Tea tree oil will kill even toxic and black mold. Just use 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil mixed with 2 cups vinegar in a spray bottle.

Laundry
Sunshine: Line drying your clothing is more energy-efficient, economical and the sun naturally whitens clothing.

Peroxide: Use your standard 3% formula which can be purchased at the drug store. Pour ½ cup of your hydrogen peroxide into your bleach dispenser. If you have no dispenser, pour the peroxide into the washer as it fills. Allow the washer to agitate a few times before tossing the laundry into the machine. Peroxide removes blood and grass stains and disinfects. Great for cloth diapers! ***NOTE: This is a bleaching agent. Test a small inconspicuous area first!

Vinegar and Baking Soda: Pour 1 cup of vinegar and ¼ cup of baking soda right in with your laundry. The mixture fizzes. This fizzing action on the part of the baking soda pulls dirt and stains out of the clothing and the acidic vinegar "eats away" at them. Pretty great team, right? The great things is that this mixture can go into all the laundry, whites, colors.. you name it!

Your home should be a place which is safe, healthy and clean. Natural cleaning methods can help you to achieve that goal with minimal cost and no health risks.

When Green Isn't Green

Natural cleaning is an age-old practice which is being rejuvenated by the "green" movement that is sweeping the world. Many are seeking to join this movement but aren't sure where to begin. There are many products on the market which are promoted as "safe" or "green". The sad truth is that many of these products aren't truly safe and/or aren't truly supporting the green movement. But how can a person tell which products are good to buy and which aren't?

Follow the Dollar
Our motto is "follow the dollar". If a company is selling products which are "green" but continue to produce products that are toxic, their integrity should be questioned. Are they truly working for the greater good? Or are they making a buck off of the popularity of the green movement? A company which is truly in support of a safer alternative and a healthier planet will sell only natural/green products. If, however, a company is selling "green" products while still producing toxic products, they are disingenuous at best. Whether to lend financial support to them should be strongly considered. More importantly, it's time to ask what ingredients may be in their products, having come from factories producing toxins.

Ingredient List
Look at the label of the product you're considering. Can you read the ingredients? Are the ingredients even listed? A company with integrity and true dedication towards a healthy world will list their ingredients. They have nothing to hide. You should be able to pronounce these ingredients.

Cost
While cost isn't necessarily an indicator of lack of integrity or toxicity of product, it is a consideration to most of us. Many people will choose a toxic cleaning product simply because they believe the alternative will be more expensive. Cost can be a major factor in whether a person decides to "go green" or not. As "green" has become more popular, the prices have become more competitive (supply and demand!) and therefore more affordable.

Keep It Simple
So what other options are there? How can a person "go green" and be sure that the cleaners they choose are truly safe? The answer is simple: Open your cupboard. There you'll find most of your green cleaning kit. The rest of your kit is almost as simple. There is no need to spend a small fortune or rack your brain deciding which products to purchase. You have most of the ingredients in your home already! You simply need someone to help you pull it together.

Health Benefits
Look on the container of any cleaning or personal care product and you'll find a list of hard-to-pronounce ingredients (if they list the ingredients at all): Parabens (butyl-, ethyl-, methyl-, propylparaben), sodium laurel sulfate (SLS), sodium fluoride, propylene glycol, padimente-O, octyl-methoxycinnamate, D&C colors, FD&C colors, formaldehyde (embalming fluid) or fragrance, just to name a few. According to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency-produced “The Inside Story: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality”: “A growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities.”

Obviously, if the products on the shelves are the cause of cancer, asthma and other health issues, then they are certainly not healthy. That is the #1 benefit of natural cleaning. Using safe, natural products is going to improve your health by exposing your body to dangerous chemicals.

Cost
Products in your home such as baking soda, vinegar, and lemons are far less expensive than purchasing toxic chemicals. Americans spend 69.1 billion dollars each year on cleaning products. How much do you spend per week? Per month? My family of 6 spends $6.57 per month to clean our home. Mind you that's counters, floors, tubs.. everything. I have not included personal care or laundry in with this figure. My weekly cost for laundry is 50 cents. Yes, you read correctly.. 50cents. It's something to consider, isn't it?

Earth Friendly
Using natural products which are safe and earth friendly (note that I specified "natural products which are safe". Some natural-occurring ingredients, such as chlorine and fluoride, are very unsafe). Washing toxic chemicals down your drain endangers aquatic animals. It also pollutes the water and land it with which it comes into contact. Also, when using those products, much water is needed for rinsing as much of the toxic residue off as possible. Natural cleaning reduces the need for so much water. For instance, when using a bottle of 50/50 water and vinegar along with a microfiber cloth, there is no need to rinse most of the time. Both evaporate and leave nothing toxic behind to cause health risks or endanger the earth. When I clean, the only water I need (besides what's in the bottle) is to rinse the tub and mop the floor.. no rinsing needed on the floor.

Reduced Cleaning Time
One of the big benefits that should appeal to anyone is that natural cleaning reduces the amount of time spent cleaning. The average American woman spends 2.6 hours per day on household activities. Of that, 1.5 hours is spent cleaning. That's 90 minutes per day cleaning. In our household of 6, I spend about 20 minutes per day.

My personal experience with switching our cleaning service from toxic to natural cleaners was that a house which took us (2 people) 4 hours to clean now takes approximately 45 minutes. Consider our extensive checklist and you'll appreciate how productive we are in our cleaning. How does natural cleaning reduce work time? The answer is simple: Natural cleaning products work harder thereby lessening the time we must spend working.

Home Organization Part II: The Plan

As we discussed yesterday, in our General Overview, the first step towards a maintained and organized home is planning. The easiest way to create a cleaning plan is to divide the tasks up by how often they need to be completed. I've found the best way is to create Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Seasonal tasks lists.

Planning Your Checklist
Creating a cleaning checklist for house cleaning is easier than you may think. The greatest advantage to creating your own list is that it will be perfectly suited to your household's needs. Here are some points to ponder:

What tasks need to be accomplished daily, weekly, monthly and seasonally? Consider your family structure and activities. If, for instance, you have very young children, mopping the floor may be a daily task. However, if you live alone, this obviously won't be the case.

Consider your busy days. If you spend all day Thursday running kids to soccer and piano practice after you've homeschooled and done volunteer work, this would obviously not be the day for your weekly tasks!

Streamline your errands. Set aside one day per week for running errands. This not only saves time and money, but also is more eco-friendly. Do not drive more than necessary.

Create the Schedule
After considering your family's needs, schedule, etc, you're ready to make your schedule!

Either take 4 sheets of paper to create your DAILY, WEEKLY, MONTHLY and SEASONAL lists. Or draw 4 columns on one sheet of paper (eco-friendly!) and do the same.

Pull out your weekly schedule and decide when you can do which tasks. Personally, I use 15 minutes in the morning and evening for "chores". Saturday is set aside for weekly task. But perhaps you work weekends, your "Saturday" may be on a Monday.

Daily Schedule
As you can see, we spend 15 minutes in the morning (sometimes less) and 20 minutes after dinner cleaning.

Weekly:
Due to work schedules, our grocery day is Thursday. So..
Wednesday: Create menu and shopping list. Menu posts on refrigerator. Clear old food stuffs from fridge and wipe down using 50/50 vinegar spray and microfiber cloth.
Thursday: Errands at 2pm (bills, groceries, etc.)
Saturday morning we take 1 hour to use our cleaning checklist on our home.
If you stick to your plan most of the time, then those times when schedules get thrown by the wayside for a day won't be such an dreadful situation. Your home should be a place of peace and relaxation. You work hard to have your home, why not enjoy it?

Most Importantly: KEEP IT SIMPLE! The more detailed your list, the more overwhelmed you'll feel. If you keep your eye simple, the job at hand will be far easier and you will be more relaxed about it!

Home Organization Part I: A General Overview

"Home, sweet home; for there the heart can rest,” said a poet. But for many people, home is a place of unrest and frustration because of its condition and appearance. Organizing a household can be a rather frustrating task even for those who may otherwise consider themselves organized.
Maintaining work and family schedules seems quite enough without adding what seems to be a full-time job of organizing, decluttering and picking up after people. But there are benefits to being organized!

Being well organized gives you time to do things you'd rather be doing. One study shows that “by using an improved method of doing the daily cleaning, a 53 percent saving of time was effected.” Good organization cut work-time in half!
An organized home helps bring stability to one's life. Well organized homes ease the frustration of not being able to find things and the embarrassement of having guests pop in unexpectedly to a messy home.

Organization Requires a Plan

Planning does not mean that you must schedule each hour of the day, although there are people who do that. Instead, create daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal lists. Set aside 15-30 minutes each day for the daily tasks. Try assigning 1 hour on Saturday for weekly tasks. Choose a day of the month to set aside 2 hours for monthly tasks and finally perhaps "ring in" each new season with one day set aside for seasonal chores such as gutter-cleaning and washing the patio furniture.

While planning your cleaning, consider taking steps which prevent "do-overs". Cleaning top to bottom will prevent needing to repeat a task. For instance, cleaning blinds, ceiling fans or the tops of door frames before dusting will prevent the need to dust twice. In fact, dusting should be left in your last 3 tasks..dust, sweep, mop. In this way, you'll save yourself time and aggravation.

Planning your meals saves you time and money. It is far more expensive to "run to the store" each day to pick up a forgotten item or entire meal than it is to purchase your groceries weekly. Plan balanced meals on a menu, create a shopping list and purchase only what is on the list. (By the way, the day you're planning your menu and shopping list is the perfect day to clear out the refrigerator! So set aside a certain day for these.)

Laundry is another area of time consumption. Some set a certain day to do laundry weekly. If this is necessary, by all means, assign it the time. However, in many cases it is easier to do "a load a day". If everyone in the house is gone to work and school during the day, throw the load in before leaving. Upon returning in the afternoon, switch it over to the dryer. While dinner is cooking, fold it and put it away. If, however, mom stays at home during the day, she could start a load before or after breakfast, do the other chores and return to switch it over to the dryer. Just before or after lunch, fold it and put it away.

Organization Means Arrangement

Does it really make that much difference how you arrange things? Recently I wrote an article on kitchen organization. I pointed out the necessity of streamlining. One study showed that when a kitchen was rearranged..using the same space, appliances and countertops.. there was “a saving of 2,191 steps and 1 hour and 3 minutes of time each day.”

Work Methods

Carrying a caddy which contains your cloths, cleaners and other tools makes more sense than running room to room grabbing things, using more valuable time. Using eco-friendly cleaning methods saves a great amount of time as well! Why spend an hour scrubbing something if you can spray it, wait 5-10 minutes and wipe? Yes, it's that easy. And so, method does matter. Method can be the difference between srubbing until your arms ache and having a sparkling clean tub in 5 minutes.

Having an organized home requires a plan, streamlined arrangement and a good cleaning method. Tomorrow we will discuss the "how to's" of developing your plan.

Green Cleaning Explained

There is still some confusion, I think, about what it means to be "green" in our cleaning habits. At Naturally Maid Cleaning, we've learned through trial, error and education exactly how to be green, natural and leave a home disinfected and spotlessly clean. So how exactly do you "green clean"?

What It Means to Be Green

Being green means that we consider our environment. Certainly we must concern ourselves with our home. That is our first environment. Is it clean? Are we leaving toxic residue on our floors, walls, countertops, dishes, etc? Are we taking care to ensure that we're not polluting the air we breathe inside that home? After all, inside air quality fares far worse than outdoor air with its factories and cars. That should tell us something is seriously wrong in our homes! Cleaning with toxic cleaners is the cause of indoor air pollution.

Next, we consider our effect beyond those walls. When we rinse our cleaning cloths and dump our mop buckets, the water goes somewhere. Once the water arrives into the streams, is our cleaning product having a negative impact on aquatic animals? Are we killing fish and harming birds? If I pour the mop bucket outside, what impact does that have on the ground, the plants and the water sources? It also means reducing our use of water and other natural resources.

It's Easy Being Green

Reading through those questions and considerations, you may feel a bit overwhelmed at the thought of being "green" in your cleaning! No worries. It's a lot easier than you think. If you make a habit of the following techniques, you'll be helping your environment and not taking a lot of time to worry about how to do so. Also, you'll greatly diminish the time that you spend cleaning and I think we can all appreciate that!

1. Microfiber: Using microfiber cleaning cloths offers you a variety of benefits.

First, they hold dust and dirt better. This improves air quality because, obviously, the dirt and dust are not being "kicked up" into the air. This is great for everyone but especially those with allergies!
They retain water (and lots of it) better. This reduces trips to the sink which saves time and water.
Because they can be used without cleaning products, this is a great benefit to the environment and your family.
They're reusable, therefore not being thrown into a landfill.
They clean better. Plain and simple. I've never seen chrome and stainless steel shine better than when I use microfiber!

2. Use natural products. I won't go into a long explanation of green washing, but know that a few key ingredients around your home will prevent you from having worry about whether a product is or isn't "green". I have several articles containing green cleaning tips and natural recipes. If you'd like to stick to the basics, vinegar and baking soda cure all that needs to be cured in a home.

3. Cleaning with vinegar and other such ingredients eliminate the need for rinsing thereby saving water. There is simply nothing dangerous left behind if you don't rinse. Everything sparkles and is disinfected by vinegar.

4. Use dish cloths, not sponges. Did you know that salmonella bacterial split (multiply) every 20 minutes or so? That means if one bacteria cell is on a sponge, in 4 hours you'll have 4,096 of them on your sponge! If it came with a few hundred friends, then in that 4 hours, you'll have approximately 1.23 million potential killers on your sponge. So ditch the sponge! Instead:

Purchase 12 dish cloths and put them in a drawer or basket near your sink.
Place a small pail under the sink with water and vinegar in it.
Wash your dishes and IMMEDIATELY toss the cloth into the vinegar and water. (The vinegar will inhibit the growth of mold)
Place a new cloth on the sink decoratively for the next load of dishes.
When you wash towels, dump the pail (vinegar and all!) into the washer.

5. Keep a spray bottle containing 50/50 water and vinegar in each bathroom and the kitchen. This will save you time as it's always handy and you can do a daily spray and wipe thereby reducing cleaning time overall.

6. Ditch papertowels and use your microfiber for wiping spills. Use cloth napkins in the same manner as the dish cloths .. just use and toss into the bucket.

These are your basics of green cleaning. You will be amazed at the time and money you save in your efforts to be kind to the environment and your own health!

Toilet Cleaning: Quick and Easy

Toilet cleaning doesn't require toxic, harsh chemicals. Neither does it require much time. Here are some natural, green, cleaning methods to help you out.

For regular cleanings:

1. Pour some baking soda and vinegar into the toilet. Let it fizz.
2. Take your spray bottle of 50/50 vinegar and water (maybe 5-10 drops of an essential oil if you please) and spray the tank, seat, under the seat, sides, etc.
3. Grab your microfiber cloth and wipe it all to a shine!
4. Grab your toilet scrubber and swish around the toilet.

VOILA! You now have a totally disinfected, shining, pleasant smelling toilet!

What about those yellow mineral stains?
Those are easy too. (Yeah..can you believe I'm saying that?)

1. Turn off water to toilet. Flush to drain it as much as possible.
2. Pour some table salt in there.. maybe up to 1/2 a cup. You need it in there.
3. Now grab a pumice stone and use it like an eraser.. just erase away the stains.

Easy, quick and eco-friendly and inexpensive.
