UNIZIK Appoints University Librarian, Others

The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has approved the appointment of key officers following vacancies in the office of the University Librarian and six Directorates.

The appointments were ratified during the Council’s 21st Emergency Meeting held on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Council Chambers of the University, after a rigorous and merit-based selection process.

1. Prof. Eze J. U – University Librarian

2. Dr Jane Ezeonu – Director of Medical Services

3. Engr. Ibe Obinna – Director of Works Services

4. Akuma P. I – Director of Procurement

5. Engr. Ezeokafor Lawrence – Director of Physical Planning

6. Mr Obi Collins – Chief Safety Officer

7. Attah Aloysius Emeka – Director, Information and Public Relations.

All appointments take effect from April 17, 2026, and are for a single tenure of five (5) years.

Presenting the letters of appointment, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Barr. Monsur Olugbenga Kukoyi, urged the appointees to justify the confidence placed in them through diligence, integrity, and dedicated service. He further encouraged them to uphold the values of the University and serve as worthy ambassadors of the institution.

The appointment letters were signed by the Registrar, Dr Chinenye Gloria Okeke.

These strategic appointments are expected to strengthen the administrative framework of the University and drive effective service delivery in line with its mandate.

ASUU Begins Mobilisation for Nationwide Strike

In a new letter dated October 5, 2025, and signed by its president, Prof. Chris Piwuna, ASUU reaffirmed its decision to shut down universities.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has began mobilizing members for industrial action.

The union said the move followed the Federal Government’s silence despite being served a strike notice addressed to all relevant authorities, including the Minister of Labour and Employment, Maigari Dingyadi.

Last Monday, ASUU announced that it would shut down all public universities to press home its demands. The notice, effective from Sunday, September 28, 2025, will begin with a two-week warning strike before transitioning into a total and indefinite strike if the government fails to act.

In a new letter dated October 5, 2025, and signed by its president, Prof. Chris Piwuna, ASUU reaffirmed its decision to shut down universities, citing government inaction.

He said, “The National Executive Council (NEC) of our Union, at its emergency meeting of 29th September, 2025, having evaluated the results of the referendum held across our branches, resolved to give the government a fourteen-day ultimatum to resolve the issues contained in the negotiated document which has been transmitted to the government since February, 2025.

“It was further resolved that the union will proceed on a two-week warning strike at the expiration of the ultimatum if the government fails to take acceptable and satisfactory steps to address the lingering issues.

“The resolutions were immediately communicated to the Honourable Minister of Labour, the Honourable Minister of Education and the Nigeria Labour Congress.

“It is now one week since those resolutions were reached and communicated to the appropriate authorities. I regret to inform you that there is no meaningful development deserving of any consideration to be reported.

“As we enter the second and final week of the ultimatum, thank you on behalf of NEC for the patience and understanding which you demonstrated since the commencement of this torturous negotiation that has unjustifiably lasted over eight years.

“The goal of our current action remains principally to compel the Government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement document, amongst other demands.

“The days ahead call for the mobilisation of every member of our union to ensure unity of purpose. No one should be left out of the struggle for our welfare, stem the Jupa syndrome and reposition the Nigerian University System (NUS) for global competitiveness.

“We are strong when we organise, but weakened when we agonise! Our Union has always acted in solidarity as a collective; this action will not be different.

“Members are to take instructions only from their Chairpersons. When in doubt, members should consult their Chairpersons, Zonal Coordinators and attend Congress meetings regularly for updates on further developments.”

Only 4% of Our Students Applied for FG’s NELFUND

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), Anambra State, has expressed worry over the poor response of its students to the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme, lamenting that only about four percent of its student population have so far applied.

The university’s NELFUND Committee, chaired by Engr. Prof. Stephen Ufoaroh, disclosed this in a memo dated September 11, 2025, where it revealed that out of over 66,000 students’ data already uploaded to the NELFUND portal, barely a fraction have taken the next step to register.

“This is disheartening,” the committee said, stressing that the institution has fulfilled its own obligation, and that it was now left for students to seize the opportunity.

The loan scheme, designed specifically for indigent students, comes with zero interest rate and no collateral.

Beneficiaries stand to enjoy direct payment of their tuition fees to the university, as well as a monthly upkeep allowance of N20,000 into their bank accounts. Discussions are also ongoing for an upward review of the stipend.

Prof. Ufoaroh noted that students from South Eastern states have particularly shown low interest in the programme, warning that this could deny many of them the chance to complete their studies with less financial stress.

“We must not allow this opportunity to pass us by. This is a national initiative to help students go through school. Let’s register now and worry about repayment modalities later,” he urged.

The committee listed contact persons for inquiries, including the SUG President, Mr. Chukwusom Ochuba, as well as desk officers from the university.

With the biting economic hardship and rising cost of education, observers say it is surprising that many students have yet to key into the initiative.

Meanwhile, the university advised all students to log on to the NELFUND portal at www.nelf.gov.ng for more details and registration.

CI NAU Sets Two New Records in HSK

On September 19, 2025 (Beijing Time), Chinese Testing International formally released the results of the global HSK test held on August 17, 2025. This was the third HSK test of the year organized by the Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), with 106 candidates sitting for levels HSK3 to HSK5. The overall pass rate reached 84.9%, marking yet another milestone achievement.

HSK Level 3: Record-High Pass Rate

A total of 58 students sat for the HSK3 exam, with 54 passing, yielding a record 93.1% pass rate—the highest in the Institute’s history. Remarkably, three candidates achieved a perfect score of 300/300. The test center’s average score was 256.62, significantly higher than the global average of 230.91, placing it 30th worldwide among 1,416 HSK test centers.

HSK Level 4: Steady Progress

13 students sat HSK4, with 9 passing, representing a 69.2% pass rate. The top score was 290, while the test center's average was 205.38, slightly above the global average of 204.84, ranking 65th worldwide.

HSK Level 5: New Global Ranking Breakthrough

For HSK5, 35 students participated and 27 passed, achieving a 77.1% pass rate. The highest score was 256, and the center's average reached 206.26, significantly higher than the global average of 199.82.

The Institute ranked 54th worldwide, setting a new record in its history for HSK5 performance.

Rotary Club of Awka Honours AVC Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi with Distinguished Public Service Award

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has been honoured with the Distinguished Public Service Award by the Rotary Club of Awka. The award was presented during a courtesy visit to her office on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

The delegation, led by the Club President, Rotarian Chijioke Ogugua, commended Prof. Umobi for her exceptional leadership, dedication, and impact on both staff and students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, within her administration. He further applauded the Acting Vice-Chancellor's contributions to promoting peace and fostering development within the university, noting that the decision to honour her was based on her consistent efforts to improve the welfare of the university community. "The Acting Vice-Chancellor has touched lives in the university community in many ways. This is our way of recognising and encouraging her efforts," Rotarian Ogugua stated.

In their separate speeches, Rtn. Emmanuel Ojukwu, Past Assistant Governor (PAG), and Rtn. Adedeji Ann, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Awka, shared their experiences as Rotarians and lauded the Acting Vice-Chancellor for her selfless services to humanity.

In her response, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Arinze-Umobi, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the honour and pledged her willingness to join the Rotary Club. “I am humbled by this award, and I promise to join Rotary, not just for the name, but to be part of a mission that uplifts humanity. My table is for service and the world needs people who will build others, not tear them down, and I believe that is what Rotary stands for,” Arinze-Umobi opined.

She also expressed gratitude for the peace and development that Rotary promotes globally and assured the club that the award is a motivational symbol to continue doing more for the good of society.

The award presentation which took place on Wednesday, 17th September, 2025, at the Vice-Chancellor's office was done by the President of the Northern Youth Forum Association of Nigeria (NYAN), Comrade Godiya T. Adams Bogoro

in recognition of her exceptional leadership and contributions to national development and witnessed by prominent individuals including Comrade Dauda Sambo, Organising Secretary of NYAN, Comrade Iloduba Oluchukwu Winifred, Liaison Officer for the Southeast, Barrister Philomena Okoye, the immediate past Registrar of UNIZIK and Mr. Njelita Louis, Acting Director of Public Relations, UNIZIK, among others.

The President of NYAN also reiterated that the award is to recognise Prof. Arinze-Umobi's exemplary contributions and significant impact on Nigeria's development, particularly in the realms of academic and leadership advancement.

Safety Department Celebrates Sports Victory

The Safety Department of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, celebrated its sports victory at the Security Headquarters, Awka, on Friday, September 12, 2025. The celebration commemorated the department's outstanding performance, where they emerged overall winners in the recently concluded university staff games.

In his opening remarks, Chief Ken Chukwurah, Chief Safety Officer, expressed profound gratitude to God for the victory, he appreciated the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Coral Arinze-Umobi, for her motherly leadership and the positive impact felt by the university community. The CSO also commended the university management for implementing policies that prioritize student safety. Chief Chukwurah emphasized the importance of a conducive and peaceful environment for researching and learning, crediting the safety department's diligence for ensuring a secure campus. However, he noted that challenges persist and urged the state government to enhance security measures in surrounding areas, such as Ifite-Awka and neighboring villages, to further safeguard students living outside campus.

In a speech delivered on behalf of the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Arinze-Umobi, Mr. Okey Ikegbunam, Deputy Registrar, Student Affairs, congratulated the safety department on their achievement, praising their unity and initiative in celebrating their success

In their separate goodwill messages, Prof. Makodi Biereenu-Nnabugwu, Dean of Student Affairs; Prof. Stella Anasi, represented by Mrs. Mbakwe Adaora; Acting Director of Sports, Mrs. Anthonia Chukwudi; and Prof. Derek Orji, Chairman of the Sports Committee, all commended the department's foresight in celebrating their victory.

Dr. Chukwudi Michael Okoye, a lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), has been selected for the prestigious Atlantic Fellowship for Equity in Brain Health.

The fellowship, hosted simultaneously at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and the University of California, USA, brings together distinguished researchers from around the world to promote multidisciplinary engagements in brain health, particularly in the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer's.

Dr. Okoye, who also serves as the Faculty Career Officer for the Faculty of Arts, was selected through a highly competitive process. His research interests align with the fellowship's goals, building on his PhD dissertation, which proposed the concept of "RehabDramatics." This concept explores the use of performing arts to stimulate and foster healthier psychosocial activities in specific situations.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, has congratulated Dr. Chukwudi Okoye on this achievement and his residency at the Global Brain Health Institute, Trinity College, Dublin, as a Resident Fellow.

VC Position: Contest Divides UNIZIK, Students Plan Protest

Medical students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra State have expressed concerns over academic disruptions and graduation delays due to the ongoing strike by members of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) at the school over Vice Chancellorship contest.

The students are urging the university and MDCAN to prioritize their education, calling for a swift end to the strike.

MDCAN embarked on the strike on September 24, 2024, to protest the governing council’s decision to include requirements that allegedly disqualify medical and dental lecturers from contesting the university’s vice-chancellor position.

The association claims these requirements contain discrepancies and discriminatory contents.

Some students, who spoke with our correspondent, said their studies and examinations to progress to the next academic level have been stalled due to the strike.

They indicated that they may embark on a mega protest against the delays in their studies.

The President of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Medical Students Association, Emmanuel Ikefuna, stated that exams for 500 and 600-level students have been stalled, preventing them from progressing to the next class and graduating due to the strike.

“We are planning on staging a mega protest at the main campus in Awka because learning activities are being cut short. Though we don’t have a date fixed for that yet; we had actually protested in Nnewi on October 3rd, but we are now planning a mega protest in Awka.

“When students go to the hospital to learn, they get chased away from the clinics and the ward.

“The final year students were supposed to start their exams to graduate immediately, but the strike has stalled the whole thing, and this is adding to the fact that medical students have stayed so long in school because after the strike, not even an hour was removed from our calendar.

“We had an extra one year plus, everybody had extra 16 months. There is nobody in this school that is our mate, because whenever they call off a strike, they finish immediately, but not for medical schools. So, this is the problem we’ve been facing.”

Another student, Sarah, voiced her frustration: “We’ve invested so much time and effort preparing for our exams, and now everything is just on hold.

“It’s incredibly disheartening because our future is left hanging in the balance. We just want to return to our classes and continue our education without this uncertainty hanging over us.”

A final-year medical student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed deep frustration: “This strike has thrown our entire future into limbo. We’ve spent years studying and preparing for our exams, which are crucial for us to graduate and start our careers.

“The strike has disrupted our final preparations. After countless hours of studying and hands-on training, it’s heartbreaking to see our exams put on hold, and it’s frustrating.”

Dr. Victor Modekwe, Chairman of MDCAN at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Awka, said the strike is for the good of students: “If we arrive at the conclusion with the council, school starts.

” Like we said, a terrible injustice is being done to the medical profession; students also will suffer because if they graduate and if we allow this to happen, then their future is bleak and the future of medical education in Nigeria is bleak.”

MDCAN alleged a deliberate plot to exclude their members from the ongoing vice-chancellor race, citing an advert requiring a PhD. They argue that their medical fellowship is equivalent to a PhD.

In response, Unizik management called on MDCAN to approach the Nigeria University Commission (NUC) to ascertain if medical fellowship is equivalent to a PhD.

Dr. Emma Ojukwu, Special Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor on Public Relations, stated: “The Governing Council insists that if NUC writes to confirm medical fellowship as equivalent to PhD, it will be considered for the purpose of appointing the substantive Vice-Chancellor.”

“The Council restates its commitment to creating a level playing ground for all staff to aspire to any position, including the office of the Vice-Chancellor.”

“The authorities assure all staff of inclusion and urge MDCAN to resume work in the interest of the students, promising to resolve the contending issue amicably.”

Ten students from the department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, achieved remarkable success at the Africa-wide IEEE (for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) IAS-IPCSD Engineering Design Contest 2024, a contest organized for undergraduate and graduate students of engineering across African universities. The aim of the contest is to encourage ingenuity among engineering students in solving problems unique to the continent.

Two teams from the department, comprising a total of ten students, secured positions in the top three, earning a combined prize of $4000 out of the $6000 awarded in the competition. The first team, Team Incredibles, comprising Egwuchika Tochukwu, Ogbuagu Chibueze, Samuel Gospel and Uzuke Victory, designed a prototype for an emergency/crisis management system in public roads. The second team, Team Titans, comprising Agbo Augustine, Onyebuchi Goodnews, Lekia Peace, Chidiebere Dominion, Udemgba Ferdinand, and Gabriel Onyedika Nnamoko, designed a waste-to-energy system for intelligent and sustainable waste management.

This achievement is a testament to the dedication and innovation fostered within the department, reflecting the university’s commitment to nurturing technical excellence.

The win underscores the quality of education at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, positioning the institution as a leader in producing skilled engineers capable of competing on a global stage.

The clause states:” the ideal candidate for the Vice-Chancellorship position must demonstrate a proven track record of securing substantial research funding including attracting no less than 400 Million naira and a history of successfully obtaining research grants and other resources to enhance the University’s capabilities, recorded prior to this advert”.

In a bid to improve the safety and security of lives and property on campus, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, has made concerted efforts to ensure a secure environment for students and staff.

Prof. Arinze-Umobi reiterated this commitment during her visit to the university’s Safety Unit earlier today, Monday 9thSeptember, 2024 , where she was received by the Chief Safety Officer, Mr. Ken Chukwurah and his team. The Ag. Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to enhancing security across the institution, emphasizing that safeguarding the welfare of the university community remains a top priority in her administration.

Among the key measures she highlighted are the reinforcement of security along the university’s perimeter, the lighting of walkways, and other strategic security measures. Prof. Arinze-Umobi stressed the importance of a proactive approach to security, particularly with regard to students.

“Ensuring the safety of our students is paramount. We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to maintain a safe and secure campus environment,” she stated.

She further encouraged students to remain vigilant, avoid walking alone at night, and promptly report any suspicious activities to the Safety Unit.

She also visited the university medical center, where she urged doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel to give adequate attention to the treatment of students, especially during emergencies.

The Ag. Vice-Chancellor’s visits are part of her ongoing series of engagements aimed at strengthening critical units within the university.
