There are various ways to view for open ports on your local Ubuntu/Linux machine. However, I particularly prefer two methods/command below, since it is simple, and without any third-party application.

Open your command prompt, and type:

netstat -an | grep "LISTEN "

Or, another method:

sudo netstat --tcp --udp --listening --program

It will list all ports that your machine are listening to. The latter method will even shows the program name associated to it.

Enjoy.

I have been using Conky as my desktop monitoring widgets for quite some time now. Before this, I’ve been using few applications like screenlets and gdesklets, but there’s a lot of drawbacks on these applications. Among them were limited customizations, it’s difficult to develop your own widgets, unable to find widgets you’re looking for, and if you do find them, they are too buggy to be used in the first place.

Then, I’ve found Conky. I’ll never turn back.

This is the best system monitor I have ever experienced. It is highly customizable, all you have to do is modify the Conky config file. There’s a lot of widgets/variables to use, such as system monitoring tools (CPU, RAM, SWAP, Hard Drive, etc), batteries capacity, networking, and more. And best of all, it is very, very easy to create your own widgets. If you know any programming language such as Python, Perl, or even a simple Shell Scripts, then you’re off to create your own.

Installing Conky are easy as executing command below in the terminal:

$ sudo apt-get install conky

Next, create your Conky config file. Here is my config file I’m currently using.

Then, execute command below to run Conky. Put it in your startup so that it will be running each time you boot-up your computer:

$ conky -c <path_to_my_conky_config>.conf

Below are what my desktop currently looks like with Conky:

Conky Desktop

In there I’ve created my own GMail notifier, Google Reader notifier and local TV guide, all using Python. You will find more ideas, screen shots and scripts to use with Conky on Ubuntu Forum.

Cheers.

If you haven’t noticed, Malaysia is The Land of Toll Booths. Okay, Peninsular Malaysia; Klang Valley, especially. It’s now ingrained in every KL and PJ car driver’s mind: do I pay toll today, or do I take the free, congested, traffic-light-encumbered way? (Not that paying toll doesn’t involve queuing up for miles. Go through the Sunway toll plaza on LDP during rush hour if you dare.) How much am I in a hurry? Or should I pay going to the office, and take the toll-free road coming back?

The Federal Highway, the KL-Seremban highway, NKVE, KESAS, ELITE, LDP, SPRINT, AKLEH, Kerinchi Link, Penchala Link, and now DUKE. This introduces a variant to the traveling salesman problem: try going from one end of Greater KL (I made that one up) to another, using all the toll highways, paying as much as possible for the least distance. I’m sure taxi drivers have this down pat.

Anyway, the point is that there’s a “Higglytown hero” we’re all guilty of overlooking here: the toll booth operator.

I’m a Higglytown Hero, brave and true,
I help the town with the things I do.
So work real hard and you will see
That you can be a hero, just like me!
A hero, just like me!

I’m a Malaysian toll booth operator
Pay me or you can’t go through
Then I’ll see you again later
There is no escape – yes it’s true!

You think it’s easy? First, there’s the ever-present danger of express bus drivers falling asleep on the wheel and crashing into you. Then every other person gives you RM10, and every fifth person gives you RM50; give back too much change and your salary gets deducted. Last, but not least, washroom breaks are a precious commodity:

(Over the intercom)
Toll booth operator: Boss, I gotta go.
Supervisor: What? You just went … lemme check … 45 minutes ago!
TBO: Please, boss! I guess I overdosed on the tempoyak last night.
Supervisor: Look, even if I want to, I can’t let you. Backup went out to buy cigarettes and is still not back yet.
(Radio silence)
TBO: Er … boss, I think we have a problem.

No, it’s because UKM’s Faculty of Medicine and Hospital UKM have merged.

I’m a great fan of the Pagoda T-shirt. I had some reservations at first, due to its old man image … but now I no longer care, simply because I am old heh heh …

Wearing it as an undershirt, sweat doesn’t show on your formal wear when it’s hot … and then the sweat that the Pagoda has absorbed cools you down.

Wearing it as a T-shirt at home, it’s like not wearing a shirt at all, because it’s so thin, but the advantages of wearing a shirt are still there, in that your skin doesn’t stick to the furniture, and the sweat doesn’t just trickle and roll down your body which is ticklish.

Unfortunately Pagoda T-shirts are not so easy to find, and they are quite dear at more than RM10 apiece. Fortunately there is an alternative: Edwin undershirts. The cutting and sizing scheme are the same, the only difference is the cloth. I can’t say which material is better though; it’s simply not the same type. Anyway I’ve tried both and they both achieve the same ends. It’s just a matter of feel, if one wants to be that particular (which I’m not).

In terms of price, Edwin undershirts are cheaper (less than RM10), and in terms of availability, they can be found at Giant. I do hope that Edwin continues to produce these T-shirts. I’m not partial to either, but I do welcome competition as the driver of quality and low price.

I wonder why official distributors can’t bring in reconditioned previous-generation cars. Grey importers are certainly raking it in with the 2000 Estima.
