Trivium - Interview about shogun

Trivium guitarist Corey Beaulieu is having some automotive problems but he isn’t perturbed. In fact, he kind of snickers after the comment is made. So, it’s satisfying to see that success has not spoiled the maniacal metal musician. Ultimate-Guitar interviewed him back in 2006 for the release of the band’s third album, The Crusade, and he was an affable and easygoing character who seemed well unaware of his own talents and the steadily growing popularity of his band.

And now, with the release of Shogun at hand and another interminably long tour stretching out before him, UG has tracked him down once again. The new album brings together the elements of the first three – blinding riffs tacked on to vocals both screamed and sung; breakneck rhythm tracks; harmony guitar parts leaving vapor trails in their wake – and presents them in a far more cohesive and fully realized fashion. The songs are more carefully structured and the soloes more fully woven into the template of the arrangement as opposed to a million notes simply flying all over the track.

In fact, that’s where the conversation begins, talking about Shogun’s place in the band’s recorded development.

UG: Is Shogun the culmination of the previous three albums? Is it the beginning of a new phase for Trivium?

Corey Beaulieu: Well, every record we try and go and push ourselves and just write cool songs that we did as a band. And we mix some things up to make it fun and also to progress and stuff and to keep it interesting for ourselves. Every record is just like that moment in time and what we feel is the best thing for us to do musically as a band. All the other records were just steppingstones to the next level and every time we go do a new record, we’ve had more experience and we played together more and just keep striving to push ourselves. The new record is just the result of all our previous records and the whole build-up to it. So it’s definitely got like a lot of elements that you can hear on those previous records but also this record’s got the next steps of the evolution of our sound incorporated into it. So it doesn’t sound like a copy of any other record, it’s its own thing; but also people can hear some familiarity throughout from the previous records. I think people will be able to dig it a lot because they’ll just be able to feel the different stuff from the Crusade or Ember … or Ascendancy as well.

When we had our first conversation, one of the points you really wanted to make was that the Crusade album was pointing the band in a more vocally melodic direction. You even said, “Some people are gonna be mad that we don’t scream anymore.” You actually spoke at length how Trivium were moving away from the screaming thing into a more straight up vocal style. And here on the Shogun album, the screaming is back in full throttle. Can you explain that?

We were writing the music and we always get the songs down musically before we do anything vocally. We had a couple tracks done and we went in and did like the demoes and stuff and we were trying to do some vocal stuff and we were doing some singing stuff pretty much starting off doing the vocals in the style of the Crusade stuff. There’s a lot of riffs and parts on this record that are a lot darker and heavier than anything we’ve had before, so it definitely called for something very aggressive. And we tried a few different things and it really didn’t have the aggression we were looking for. And then Travis just said, “Try fucking screaming on it and see if that works.” And we tried it and it sounded really good so we were like, “Yeah, that’s what the part needed; it needed that.” So we just decided wherever there’s a part on the record where the screaming is kinda called for, we’ll do it. Instead of limiting ourselves to what we can do. So the screaming gives us another dynamic and another thing to work with creatively. And I think the way we kind of balanced it out is using the screaming is kind of like to accent a part or an aggressive part.

Texas Battle (Carey Fuller), Shavon Kirksey (Emi), and Richard Blake (Agundus) will have very short roles in the film as well. Shavon will be Chi-Chi’s school friend, Texas will be a school bully, and Richard will be a jock. That’s all we really know about these casting additions so far.

Razorback Two-Tone Review

This is a set-neck guitar with a Floyd Rose tremolo, plus Dimebucker treble pickup. With a pearl razor inlay and mahogany body and neck, this guitar features the Dimebag traction knobs, black hardware, and a rosewood fingerboard.

Features: The Razorback was designed by the late Dimebag Darrel and is made in the USA. The neck has 22 rosewood jumbo frets with razorblade mother-of-pearl inlays and a special razorblade inlay on the 12. The shape is as metal as you can get, however the points can get bashed easily because of the size of the guitar. The size is also something you should think about before buying as when it's in the hardcase it leaves only 1 inch free in the car. It has a flyod rose original floating trem and sounds brill, and it never goes out of tune no matter how much you turn the tuning knobs when the nuts are tight. It has a 3-way toggle switch (neck, bridge, both pickups) and 2 volume and 2 tone controls. It comes with a seymour duncun dimebucker bridge pickup which gives great treble sound and allows the best harmonics. However I changed the Diazio neck pickup to a EMG 85 because I didn't think the diazio was that good. It came with 2 allen keys, 1 for the tune locks and 1 for the floyd rose and 1 spanner for the wammy. Apart from the bridge pickup this is the best guitar I have played and I have played gibsons, Jackson PRS. An amazing guitar. // 9

Sound: If you plan on playing blues do not buy this guitar, this axe was made to be pure metal. I use it with a Marshall AVT150 stack, Jim Dunlop Crybaby classic wah pedal and Line 6 Uber metal pedal. Using both pickups gives you a unbelievebly heavy sound, expecially whn the the Uber Metal kicks in, and the treble pickup gives you great squealing solos. This guitar is great for fast paced shredding, slow harmonicing solos, anytype of metal this can do. // 10

Action, Fit & Finish: There was absolutly nothing wrong when it came, the only thing I had to do was drop D it. I picked the two tone finish because I thought it was best basically. I was looking at the shards but close up I didn't like it as much so then I was going to get the explosion becos on the Dean website it had a lot of black and dark Orange around the edge but when I saw it 4 real it was almost all bright Orange. // 10

Reliability & Durability: Everything on this guitar is pretty solid, the only thing I would say that it is easy to bash the points in a crambed space but on stage it is great. The finish s also pretty thick, the strap has never fallen off when I'm playing and I don't have strap locks. // 10

Impression: If you want to play metal this guitar is the choice 4 u. I have been playing for just over 6 years now and this is the best buying choice I have made. I also have a Gibson SG and les paul and though they r both top quality guitars I would throw them both away for my Dean. If it was stolen, firstly I would hunt the guy down and then get another 1 the next day. I love everything about it from the shape, to the sound and I always get tht exitment like when you get a new guitar everytime I plug it in. The best feature I would say is the shape because it is not often you see a guitar like this, I would tht if it wasn't a guitar it would be a weapon because of the points. The only thing I which it had was the emg85 as standard because I think the sound is much better with it, I don't regret tht change at all. // 10

Green Day Release Studio Footage

Green Day recently posted a new video of them working in the studio for their upcoming record which will be produced by Nirvana producer and Garbage drummer, Butch Vig.

The video briefly shows drummer Tre Cool and bassist Mike Dirnt recording their respective instruments.

The new album will be Green Day’s first since 2004’s massively successful "American Idiot". The band also recently performed and recorded under the name Foxboro Hot Tubs and released a garage-rock album titled "Stop Drop And Roll!!!" earlier this year.

Trivium latest album Shogun.

Sound: It may just be that Trivium took the public’s reviews of it's last album into consideration when they once again returned to the studio. I’m sure many of you will recall that The Crusade was met with mixed reviews because it took a dramatic turn to the melodic, vocally speaking. The screams were replaced with more of a James Hetfield-like singing style, and not every Trivium fan was on board for the change. So whether or not public opinion played a role in their writing, Trivium has returned with Shogun, an album that has a distinctly more brutal songwriting approach, yet still thrives on the amazing technical abilities of vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy, guitarist Corey Beaulieu, bassist Paolo Gregoletto, and drummer Travis Smith.

With over an hour’s worth of material, Shogun takes you in a million different directions musically. Just when you think you have one song figured out, Trivium might decide to alter the tempo or make a sudden shift from aggressive screaming to a beautifully sung chorus that takes the song out. The opener “Kirisute Gomen” is a fairly good representation of the rest of the album, and melodically it is one of the strongest among the 11 tracks. The song begins with a beautiful lone acoustic, which quickly is joined by an almost primal drum beat. The electrics jump in soon after, and it’s at that point where a variety of musical sections take turns with one another. Screamed sections are abruptly interrupted by solid melodies, and vice versa. At one point everything stops completely as if going to the next track, but oh no – there’s still more to come. It’s a solid track in terms of songwriting and is memorable introduction for Shogun.

Trivium still draws from the masters, but the quartet is skilled enough as musicians that they make a positive out of it. The James Hetfield vocal similarities are still present on “Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis, ” a song that actually has a Megadeth-like guitar line running throughout as well. While they don’t quite live up to these icons, Trivium still manages to create a pretty good balance between screamed thrash sections and accessible melodies. As you might expect guitarists Heafy and Beaulieu still put on quite the show with their solos, and if it’s possible, they’re even more impressive. Highlights in this area include “Into The Mouth of Hell We March” (if you like a little speed in your solos, you’ll get it in full during this one) and “Shogun” (an 11-minute epic that includes electric insanity, restrained acoustic work, and everything in between).

The band deserves credit for including multiple unique sections in each song, even if there might be a few tracks with a base melody that doesn’t hook you immediately. The chorus in “Down From The Sky” might get a little repetitive or “Of Prometheus and the Furies” tends to sound too similar to what has done before in the metal world, but as a whole Shogun is still leaps and bounds a better album than The Crusade.

Lyrics and Singing: There is certainly a dramatic aspect to Trivium’s musical content, and the lyrics match (if not surpass) the larger-than-life flair of the band. Shogun features quite a few songs that deal with battles and the way of the sword, and it may lay it on a bit thick for some listeners out there. But for as aggressive as some of the songs are, you have to give the band credit for creating a vivid picture to match what is going on musically. One of the most descriptive songs is “Throes of Perdition” in which Heafy sings, “Vultures circle above; Hyenas mocking the kill; Excrement drooling down their chins; Atop the cliffs I look down, into the starving Hell-mouth; The rabid foam crashes hard on it's teeth; Their mouths' salivate.” The lyrics definitely have a fascinating aspect to them, but they are also the kind that fans tend to love or hate.

Impression: While there were plenty of listeners who did enjoy The Crusade, Trivium should appease a much larger fan base with Shogun. Whether or not you enjoy screamed vocals, they take the songs in a completely fresh direction and it makes the sung, melodic segments all the more powerful. Each member of Trivium gives his all to Shogun, but it’s hard to not gush a little extra about the guitarists once again. They have delivered so many incredible riffs, solos, and breakdowns on the new album, it will take multiple listens in order to appreciate the full scope of their compositions.

An eye witness to the crash, William Owens, claimed that he saw the jet careen across Highway 320 in a huge ball of flame, and as he came up to the wreckage he saw two men lying on the road. "I didn't know what I had seen; it was maybe 800 feet in front of me, but as I approached it closer, though, I made out a fire. By then I was able to see the tail of the jet, and I recognized it as a jet. It's in flames, and the fuel is running across the road, and I had to cross the fuel to get to the two guys that seemed to have been dumped on the highway," he said. Owens said the two men were running around and pulling off clothing to put out the flames. He said he asked them whether anyone else was on board the plane, and they said four people were with them. "We turned to the jet to try and see if there was anything we could do, but immediately, there was nothing anyone could do," Owens said.

Both Barker and Goldstein are in critical condition with severe burns. Barker is said to be burned in his lower extremities and it’s been reported that Goldstein has extensive burns to his face and arms. Both men are expected to make a full recovery.

Introduction

The sape is one of the string instruments from the lute family, which has a short neck.It is made from soft wood, usually the meranti's. The sape has quite an elongated body which is hollowed out and functions as a resonator. The shape of the body looks like a sampan and is often called 'the boat lute' in the west.

History

The sape is a traditional lute of many of the Orang Ulu or "upriver people", who live in the longhouses that line the rivers of Central Borneo. Sapes are carved from a single bole of wood; many modern instruments reach over a metre in length. It is famous among the Kayan and Kenyah tribes of East Malaysia. It is used in entertainment and to accompany dances such as 'Datun Julud and 'Ngajat' (one of the warrior dances associated with headhunting according to legend). Originally , sape strings were made from the Sago tree but now these have been replaced by nylon strings.

Tuning

One of the systems that are usually used are as follows:

String 1: Tune like the middle C of the piano
String 2:Tune like C one octave lower than middle C
String 3: Tune to A, a minor third below middle C
String 4: Tune to F, a perfect fourth above middle C

Playing

All the strings are plucked using the thumb and only one of the strings is used to play the melody. The rest of the strings function as drone strings, playing only open strings. The strings are fixed across the body, supported by a bridge which is movable, for tuning purposes.

Songs

The sape repertoire comprises songs like: Sambe Main Daton, Jempen Letoh, Kabun, Kelewah, Eng-tang Takoh and Nau-hu. The Kelewah is usually performed for the purpose of entertainment of the residents of the longhouse. The sape is usually played in a duet, playing in two registers, low and high. Sape music is best known through the works of the late, great Tusau Padan. The tradition of Sape at present remains in the good hands of Uchau Bilong and Mathew Ngau Jau.

Construction

Initially the sape was a fairly limited instrument with two strings, three strings and four strings. Its use was restricted to a form of ritualistic music to induce trance. It gradually became a social instrument, used as accompaniment for dances and as a form of entertainment. Today, three, four or five-string instruments are used, with a range of more than three octaves.

Application

Musically, the sape is a simple instrument. One string carries the melody, the accompanying strings are struck rhythmically to produce a drone. In practice, the music is quite complex, with many ornamentations and thematic variations. There are two common modes, one for the men's longhouse dance and the other for the woman's longhouse dance. There also is a third rarely used mode. Sape music is usually inspired by dreams; there are over 35 traditional pieces with many variations. The overall repertoire is slowly increasing.

Ease of Use: Stock sounds are ok. I don't know why they made so many factory sounds with crazy effects. I really just wanted to have lots of great sounds I could tweak just a bit for my own use. Anyway, I created my own sounds using the software editor and a MIDI connection. Editing patches is good, but not great. There is a USB port on the back, but it's only for using this unit for recording. I don't know why they couldn't use this port for editing the patches. Anyway, you need both the MIDI In and Out ports connected to your computer to utilize all editing features. Once I installed the softare, it took about an hour for me to figure it out. To write save changes on the G9, you have to send all data to it. You cannot edit one patch at a time, but it only stays in the computer until you "send all" to the G9. Not the greatest, but it sure beats editing on the G9 directly. Manual is good. I've had to refer to it several times and found my answer each time. Firmware was 1.07 and 1.08 was posted on their website. So I attempted to install it from Windows Vista. During the firmware update, it errored out. When I powered on the G9, it was dead. I had power, nothing else happened. I tried several times but got the same error. I dual boot my computer between XP and Vista, so I gave it a try from XP. Same error. However, my XP installation didn't have .NET 1.1 installed (which I thought it did), and this is a requirement for the updater. So I installed .NET 1.1 and installed it under XP. The update worked just fine, and the G9 started working again. // 8

Sound: I use an Ibanez S520 guitar plugged into a portable Yamaha mixer and then into my computer. I mainly play at home writing and recording. For Live use, I'll play this through a Marshall MG250DFX, but I'll connect the G9 to the left and right Return inputs on the back. So the amp is pretty much just loud box. The G9 is pretty quiet except when using patches with lots of gain. But that's to be expected from anything with lots of gain. Effects are good. I upgraded to the G9 from a Boss GT-3 which had wonderful effects. But I don't get crazy with effects, and the G9 does a good enough job. As I stated, I mainly plug the G9 into my mixer then into my computer. I like the fact there 10 banks to be used for "direct" play into a mixer and another 10 banks for "live" use. I was hoping I could edit a patch for "direct" use at home, then just turn off the cabinet simulator and save the patch in the equivalent "live" patch area. Depending on the sound, you may need to adjust the preamp settings a bit between the "direct" and "live" patches to make them sound the same. // 9

Reliability & Durability: Looks like it was build very good. Seems to be solid and durable. Everything seems to be metal. I can't afford a backup, so I won't be using one. I'm not worried about it though. I've emailed Zoom in Japan and Samson in the USA (the Zoom distributer here) asking some presales questions. The Samson rep emailed a reply the same day. And a reply from Japan took a few days. Both answered my questions. I even spoke with the Samson rep Who was very helpful and courteous. // 9

Impression: I play melodic rock. I've setup my own patches to give me some clean, blues, and rock sounds. I'm not into metal, but there are some awesome metal sounds here. I've been playing for 20 years. Sold my old Boss GT-3 and upgraded to this. Definately a step in the right direction. If I lost this thing, I'd probaby buy it again. For the features and prices, it's awesome! What I love: I love the sounds, the sexy look, the price. What I don't love: It's kinda big, so I'm having a hard time finding a case for it. Editing patches from the computer could be improved. There is no digital out on this! The USB audio port is only 16bit. If it was 24 bit, I wouldn't care so much for the lack of digital out. So I'm better off just recording this using the audio out ports into my M-Audio 2496 sound card which supports 24bit audio. I was looking at the Boss GT-8, Line6 X3 Live, and the Vox Tonelab LE. Listened to the GT-8, but I didn't really hear a lot of difference from my Boss GT-3. I'm sure the quality of the sounds is better, and I did like the dual preamp feature. I really considered the X3 Live, but read so many negative reviews about the construction of the unit and so many firmware issues. So I stayed away. I almost bought the Tonelab LE. I really believe having a tube warms the sound up, which is what I like. But then I found the Zoom locally and had to buy it. For the price, features, and quality, this unit is wonderful! // 9

Metallica return with the single most anticipated metal album of the year.

Sound: One thing right away –- the album is not very well produced. Rick Rubin is of course not responsible for this, as he didn't engineer it. At times it's a bit too loud, gets a bit fizzy and as often is the case with Metallica's albums, it's basically guitar-snare-vocals. Lars' drumsound is very loud and occupies a large portion of the spectrum, while Hetfield/Hammett hog most of the rest and Trujillo is not as prominent as one could wish. Lars' infamous “St Anger” -- snare is gone, but I still find his snare on “Death Magnetic” leaving some to be desired. Lars has also always opted for a more thumpy and wet bassdrum, which in turn makes it sound a bit muddy in the low end.

Rhythm guitars on the other hand are tighter than a gnats behind and sound absolutely killer. It's a classic thrash sound in a modern costume. As far as production goes, it's not a great one, it's barely good and I certainly would expect more from a band of this stature. // 6

Lyrics and Singing: One of the things that bothered me the most on “St Anger” were the, at times, atrocious lyrics. I'm glad to say that James Hetfield is, if not back to his 80s form, penning some good, solid lyrics again. The topic most of the album deals with is, as the title indicates, death. Nothing new under sun but it's not so much what you say but how you say it. There're plenty of catchy lines to be found, like “Bow down, sell your soul to me, I will set you free” in “The Judas Kiss” or the catchy-yet-somewhat-daft-sounding chorus in “Cyanide”. While Hetfield doesn't reach the heights of some of his finer works such as “... And Justice For All”, “Master of Puppets” or “The Outlaw Torn”, he can't be found guilty of putting together a lyric that hurts the song.

The vocal delivery is also fairly solid. James sounds like, well, one could expect from a thrasher his age. He has lost some power and grit, but then again so do nigh all vocalists when they make it to the age of 40-something. I can certainly understand people who criticise his as times country-esque howl or the constant addition of “AH!! ” to every other line. But does it bother me? Not so much, but one should also note that I'm accepting Hetfield's delivery for what it is, not praising it. It's fairly solid, at times he sounds great and at times he doesn't sound all that great. I find that as long as he sticks to barking out lyrics, like the verses in “The End of The Line”, it sounds pretty damn good. But it's far less pleasing when he tries to tap into a more singing, high pitched voice like on “The Unforgiven III”. However, I'd rather have James doing a good, aggressive delivery with some weaker singing here and there, than the other way around. // 7

Impression: Kirk Hammett a few weeks ago said something along the lines of “It's not that we couldn't do a riff/solo record anymore, it's just that we chose not to” when asked about the new album and the accusations they've had to stomach with their previous three or four albums. The general feeling I get when listening to “Death Magnetic” is that stylistically, you can trace the lineage from their 80s efforts to this. Heavy riffs, solos, harmonies, interesting arrangements and a riff-our-hearts-out attitude makes it possible to state that while “Death Magnetic” is not “... And Justice For All”'s younger brother, they're at least musically and stylistically related.

I'd argue that six or seven out of the ten songs are good-or-better. That's not a bad track record, and makes a good chunk of the album a very enjoyable listen. The instrumental “Suicide & Redemption” takes a good couple of minutes to achieve anything worth of notice, but the calm, quiet section with Hammett's melody guitar is one of Metallica's finer moments in a good 20 years or so. It's fair to say that a few songs don't deliver all that well (“The Unforgiven III” is, well, unforgiveable) and a good 10-15 minutes could've been scratched to make this 1.2 hours long album a bit less padded. Outstaying your welcome is one of the worst sins you can commit in my book, but the album opens with a strong barrage of songs and ends on a pretty high note with “My Apocalypse”.

As for the individual efforts, well, Hetfield's vocals we've already talked about. Kirk Hammett is at times horrible and in other places pretty harmless. In my book, a solo should elevate the song and not just take up 12 or 18 bars of space to function as some kind of bridge, but rarely if at all does Hammett deliver a really, really tasty solo. The rhythmplaying is as one could expect, extremely solid, tight and punchy and there's nothing to complain about in that department. Rob Trujillo can't be praised or criticised of much, because he's fairly inaudible at most times, at least on my stereo system. Lars Ulrich, on the other and is very audible and that's a shame. Lars used to be a solid, if adventurous metal-drummer in the 80s but has now deteriorated to a shell of his former self. At best he's pretty harmless and doesn't hurt the song much, but some of the beats and grooves he's conjured up for this are just atrocious.

However, while there are individual efforts that deserve criticism, it should also be noted that Metallica in their prime never where a band with much individual flash and they achieved their greatness because of their strength as a band. And that's exactly the case with “Death Magnetic” - it's a solid effort by the group with a good number of catchy and interesting songs, some songs we definitely can do without, but as a whole it's a solid, mature effort well worthy of a band that's been around for a quarter of a century. “Death Magnetic” probably won't make my top 10 of the year, because in the grand world of metal, this is just another band and “Death Magnetic” is just another good-if-not-great album. But I think we can hand out the “Feel-good Album of the Year”-award right now. Welcome home Metallica. It's been far too long.

First time i saw this Four Hands Guitar title on YouTube, i thought it was about a Robot with four hands playing a guitar.
I was so curious, so, i click on the link, and wait for it to load, well, i didn't expect that there are two guitarist, because, at first, there's only one guitarist showed.

General

Guitars can be constructed to meet the demands of both left and right-handed players. Traditionally the dominant hand is assigned the task of plucking or strumming the strings. For the majority of people this entails using the right hand. This is because musical expression (dynamics, tonal expression and colour etc) is largely determined by the plucking hand, while the fretting hand is assigned the lesser mechanical task of depressing and gripping the strings.

Peg/Tuning key: Use it to adjust the tension the string and change the tuning.

Nut : Nut is a small strip, to guide the strings onto the fretboard.

Volume/Tone Knob : Control some aspects of the sound like volume or tone.

What is a guitar pick?
Guitar pick is the thing that everyone use to strum a guitar.

There are many different type of Picks, and many different way to measure the size. Some manufacturer measure the size by 'L' for light, 'M' for Medium and 'H' for heavy.
Different picks make's different feels to every style you play, so, choosing the right pick is very important.

"Choosing a pick could be a pain in the A**, because there are many kind of picks made by different manufacturer, different sizes, different material, and different feels"

You can always buy a bunch of picks and try it one by one, there not that expensive though.

Find your perfect AXE!

Go to any local guitar shop.
Don't pick your guitar by the way it look.
Don't listen to anyone when choosing your guitar, its your guitar, you choose it.
Find what you're looking for?
Check how its sound like, make sure you didn't use any guitar/amp effects while testing it.
Check how comfortable the guitar to you.
Check the bridge, pick-ups, fret, weight, neck.
Make sure you have enough $$$ to buy your guitar.
You don't have to buy a Branded guitar like "Gibson, Ibanez, Fender, ESP/LTD" It's too expensive! If you buy their budget guitar, after a few months shredding it, it's suck(Trust me).
And don't listen to the Shop Owner, because they will always say the Branded guitar is better.
