Ever wondered, apart from extending the NetBeans IDE, or some application based on NetBeans Platform. What else can be done with the module?

Brief Overview

Well, NetBeans IDE provides Module Development Support by providing 4 kinds of Project Templates;

Module

Module Suite

Library Wrapper Module

NetBeans Platform Application

I have some knowledge of the first two, so we will stick to them for the rest of this post. So, lets have a look at the simplistic module structure;

This is what you see when you expand the Project node in Files View. We will focus on platform.properties, project.xml. If you switch to the Project View, you would see the files with following names, visible under Important Files node.

NetBeans Platform Config

So, that’s basically the logical view of the file platform.properties. In the past, I have written some pretty useful tips and Tricks (contributed to NetBeans Community Docs) based on this file;

Configure Clusters and Modules

Managing NetBeans Platforms

Project Metadata

This is the logical view of the file project.xml. There’s one more useful tips and Tricks (contributed), that’s based on this file, which lets you add your module as friends to those modules, if you want your module to depend on the specification version of the same.

Playing Tricks..

I will be making use of NetBeans 6.7 IDE. Although, these tricks should work well with NetBeans 6.x IDE. So, lets answer the question I asked in the beginning.. Generally, when you create Module project, you get an option to either create it as Standalone Module or Add to Module Suite.

Standalone Module

When you choose this option, you also get an option to select NetBeans Platform of your choice, along with Manage.. button. If you want to know more about that, refer this contribution.

Suppose, I choose NetBeans 6.5 Build (added with name as 65 in Platform Manager) as Platform and move ahead. I would be able to use 6.7 IDE to create module, targeted for NetBeans 6.5 IDE. The module’s platform.properties looks like this;

nbplatform.active=65

This would enable the running IDE to achieve the desired result, as mentioned above. Now, running the module will ofcourse launch NetBeans 6.5 IDE as Target Instance to see how your module works. This process might be slow, as you’re running full-fledged 6.5 IDE.

If your module doesn’t depend on clusters other than platform (which is by default). Then, you can tweak the file as follows;

enabled.clusters=\
platform
nbplatform.active=65

These clusters are bare-minimum essentials, that are enabled by default when you create the NetBeans Platform Application project using 6.5/6.7 IDE. The property enabled.clusters helps to enable only those clusters which are necessary to run this module.

Now, run your module and it will look like you’re running a NetBeans Platform Application having a single user-defined module. Here’s how module’s project.xml looks like;

<project xmlns="http://www.netbeans.org/ns/project/1">
   <type>org.netbeans.modules.apisupport.project</type>
   <configuration>
      <data xmlns="http://www.netbeans.org/ns/nb-module-project/3">
          <code-name-base>code.name.base.of.your.module</code-name-base>
          <standalone/>
          <module-dependencies>
           <!-- Here are your module dependencies.. -->
          </module-dependencies>
          <public-packages/>
      </data>
   </configuration>
</project>

Note the bold-faced tag <standalone />, this tells the NetBeans IDE that your module is not part of any module suite. Its a standalone module, as you created.

Add to Module Suite

If you decide to go with this option, you would then browse the filesystem to find the appropriate Module Suite project and then, move ahead.

In case of Module Suite projects, the enabled.clusters property automatically occurs/disappears, when you check/uncheck the modules and/or clusters from its Project Properties Wizard.

Note that the module, that becomes part of the suite, would use only those clusters which the suite has enabled. Along with that, suite-private.properties file is added under /nbproject/private. Also, take a look at the module’s project.xml;

<project xmlns="http://www.netbeans.org/ns/project/1">
   <type>org.netbeans.modules.apisupport.project</type>
   <configuration>
      <data xmlns="http://www.netbeans.org/ns/nb-module-project/3">
          <code-name-base>code.name.base.of.your.module</code-name-base>
          <suite-component/>
          <module-dependencies>
           <!-- Here are your module dependencies.. -->
          </module-dependencies>
          <public-packages/>
      </data>
   </configuration>
</project>

Note the bold-faced tag <suite-component/>, this tells that NetBeans IDE that this module is part of a Module Suite project.

Tips to Remember

You may convert your standalone module to become part of suite, or vice-versa. Just add/remove suite-private.properties (Per Suite Locator) file and tweak your Module’s project.xml and Module Suite’s project.properties.

Also, note that some changes have taken place in NetBeans 6.7 IDE, you may find out more over the web. One more thing, NetBeans 6.5 IDE added suite.properties file under /nbproject and had same tag as <suite-component/>. I think NetBeans 6.0 and 6.1 might do the same. Please try it yourself and let me know.

Stay tuned..

This is the first time, I thought of filing an issue for NetBeans Community Docs Program as I have never ever thought there would be a need for it, in the past 2 years. Generally, no one has ever done that, AFAIK.

I have been an active contributor to NetBeans Community Docs Program and managed it as coordinator for the duration of 11 months (May ‘08 – Mar ‘09). However, I feel there’s lack of coverage of the resources, that are gathered and arranged in the form of several wikis interrelated with each other in a systematic way.

Through this issue, I would like to see increased presence of NetBeans Community Docs in the NetBeans Community. I have some ideas which I would like to put forward, but first I want to see interest from your side (Community Members and NetBeans Team).

You’re welcome to add your comments/suggestions or even vote for this issue. See the following for latest updates.

Jul 14, 2009

Kristian Rink has setup a user survey. Please go and fill up the forms. We need your feedback, so that we can be in better position to decide the future of this program.

Jul 08, 2009

Kristian Rink has written a post discussing the future of the program and what does the community think about it? I feel you must go through it once.

Jul 03, 2009

Since VOC Captains have CC’ed themselves on issue report and I got reply from Michel. Here are I am sharing my ideas and related details;

Brief History

There are over 300 docs, right? When we reached 250 docs, I realized that there was findability issue. If I need a tutorial on how to make use of some feature, which is documented only by a community member and not by Sun writers. Then, user has to put some effort to locate that. Even I had that problem.

So, through mutual agreement, we created several category-specific wikis that would archive docs belonging to those categories. You may read more about that here;

http://nb-community-docs.blogspot.com/2008/11/netbeans-community-docs-reloaded.html

This way we were able to fix the findability issue, temporarily. Yes, temporarily! I thought, we were still missing a page which can provide pointers to all the sections of these category-specific wikis. So, I decided to setup a wiki;

http://wiki.netbeans.org/NBCDMatrix

that will do the needful. Now, if anyone wants (community contributed) tutorials on GUI Builder, just need to bookmark this link;

http://wiki.netbeans.org/NBCDMatrix#section-NBCDMatrix-SwingGUIBuilder

This contains a matrix which has necessary pointers to tackle the issue.

Ideas

Now, coming to the point of concern, i.e. the NetBeans Community Website doesn’t feature pointers to these wikis. As you might know that currently there’s only one pointer to the Community Docs Contributions list from relevant Learning Trails.

Instead, I would love to see a separate “Community Contributed Docs” Learning Trails, where one can have relevant information on how to access these wikis. Also, I would request the NB Team remove the following webpage;

http://www.netbeans.org/community/commdocs.html

Its better to have single Learning Trails page to focus on the above issue, rather than maintaining small sections on every Learning Trail and maintaining the above webpage. It will also ease the work spent by NB Team on such maintenance. Also, the proposed Learning Trail can also be pointed from User FAQs, Developer FAQs, etc.

If someone is unable to find necessary info in these FAQs, then he/she may navigate to the trail to learn how to find out community contributed docs for their requirement. This should be good enough to make our presence felt in the community, as this Learning Trails would feature in Docs & Support page.

Thanks!

I have been on and off this blog in the first quarter of this year. However, I think I will have more time in one month’s time as I would get more time to spend on NetBeans and share with you my learning’s. I was shocked to see a company like Sun getting acquired. You all know by now that Oracle is buying Sun and everybody is curious to know about the future of NetBeans and I am no different. Looking forward to see, how this “amazing product of the community” evolves.

Anyways, just to keep you updated, I had posted a blog on my other blog about some changes taking place in the past few weeks.
NetBeans Governance Board Elections

Well, it is actually the first time that I knew each and every nominee, because they are in the NetBeans Dream Team since July 2008.

March 09, 2009

I was eagerly waiting for the results to come and when the results were out. It was indeed a pleasant surprise. I saw it first on Planet NetBeans and saw JamesBranam’s Blog announcing the results. I was indeed deceived momentarily, but then I was glad to see James Branam being appointed as the representative from Sun Microsystems. As per the latest news item , Tom Wheeler scored a hat-trick , Fabrizio Giudici got elected for the first time . I am honored to have got special blog entries from James and Fabrizio in the past.

Congratulations to James, Tom and Fabrizio!

Hi,

I am yet again blogging about Community Docs, this time not blogging personal experience but would like to give you a recap of events that brought changes to the way program was being driven and lot more news..

What exactly do we mean by Phase(s)?

Well, it all started when James and Amit started up official weblog for NetBeans Community Docs and announced that they are gearing up for “Phase II“, as they were done with getting 100 community-contributed docs..

So, there was no “Phase I”, I mean there was no articulation of it that they were in “Phase I” and are aiming for future phases. If they did have something, then I was not privileged enough to have that information

I was neither in the NetBeans Community Docs Team nor in the NetBeans Dream Team..

Phase II | Blog and Groups..

Well, I can think of phases, as of how the project evolved? So, James announced lot of stuff for “Phase II” and soon, social networking began outside your inbox at a much larger scale..

my.netbeans.org and other established social networking sites translate into more ways for NetBeans community members to communicate with each other, start exciting projects, be in the know about NetBeans, and help to keep the NetBeans community strong and active.

Revolution was taking place and many people joined Facebook group, while few joined MySpace..

Midway through Phase II..

Changes in the team management took place, when I became Contribution Coordinator as Amit K. Saha moved into employment at Sun Microsystems, India..

Since then, lot has changed and I have kept you all updated with my personal experiences on being aboard the management of NetBeans Community Docs..

Phase III | Newsletters, Evangelists and More..

Phase III kicked off when we got 200 docs.. finally, we come towards “Phase III and again there wasn’t any specific articulation I could point you to, where we could have listed what all we would do..

Instead, our team had a Skype chat session and thereafter, we started executing the discussed ideas steadily, not at one-go!

Today, I can proudly say that all our ideas have resulted in timely goods.. Of course, community members were always there to support our ideas and helped us in realizing them..

Weekly Newsletters (20, 8, 7)

20 (20) English, 8 (20) Spanish and 7 (20) German were published.. We will be launching “Monthly Newsletters”, soon..

Blog Series- NetBeans Dream Team Docs

The posts of this special series were highlighted in weekly newsletters..

Special News Item Archive

and, some More Updates..

Whats Next?

We are 21 docs away from beginning the next phase of this amazing project/program, whatever you call it.. You would soon see some more out-of-the-box thinking taking place, at our side..

New Year has just begun and you’re in for many more surprises..
Stay tuned for more..

Namastey,

You have all seen me blogging for more than a year now. Some people call me crazy, avid, passionate and/or highly active (hyper-active) blogger Then, there were some who didn’t even bother reading my blogs OR commented negatively.

I never mind as I blog because I had developed an interest in it which made me passionate for blogging. Too, it helped me improve my writing skills, as last year I was new to blogging.

You might be surprised to know, but I was runner-up in an International Blogging Contest (June, 2008). Also, for the past several months, I have been writing 3 blogs…

2007- 13th Dec

I started writing my first ever documentation for the community. I had no experience in writing at such level. By the time, I finished writing the document using their online wiki engine, it was midnight. Yes, Dec 14th- my birthday. So, coincidentally, I wrote my first ever documentation on my birthday I realized this fact few days back while restructuring the community contributed docs archive!

2008- 1st May

I became NetBeans Community Docs (Contribution) Coordinator and I was feeling lucky to have got this opportunity to showcase my skills to the world through this wonderful platform. I thought its going to be easy, as I had closely followed Amit (K. Saha) while he was holding this position.

When I actually stepped into his shoes, they were really big. So, I realized, even though it looked very easy from contributor’s perspective, it isn’t. I had a tough time initially, when I invited people and they never responded.

Then, came a rough patch from May 22nd (since we reached 150 docs), I was finding it difficult to get new people to contribute. James (Branam) got a blogger whose 2 blog entries were converted to docs, initiating the counter for the month of June.

Entering final week of June, still 4 docs up there. It was definitely not a good position to be in. Around the same time, I was creating NetBeans Module (along with Jay) to take snapshots from within the IDE. I had to tweak the XML Layer a lot for registering Actions.

This made me write 8 docs (record was held for 5 months) within 3 days and contributed them on single day within that week. Position looked much better than it was and we had now got 12 docs. Still, 2-3 days were left and I interacted with my fellow blogging contest participants to contribute docs, they did.

Eventually, we ended up having 16 docs It was like rising from the ashes. I think I really did that, as this made me more determined and dedicated to help the community, as well as the project to strive forward. Along with James, we took the program to new heights. 150-200 in just 2 months!

2008- 13th Dec

Yesterday, I started making this post, and by the time I ended publishing it, it was midnight. I hope you might have realized by know, that its my birthday today. I am 21 years old

I had a wonderful year with NetBeans Community Docs Program, beginning as an active poster on their mailing lists, contributing documentations and finally, becoming Coordinator.

I have been maintaining a web page since April, where I have listed all the events that took place since I took over the position on May 1st. Its actually much more than that, it has complete information of how I got started and what all happened. Initiatives that I took, launching newsletters, exclusive interview and lot more.

Thank You!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank NetBeans Community Docs Team, NetBeans Dream Team Members, NetCAT Participants, Sun Technical Writers, as well as Engineers and Heroes (i.e. everyone who has contributed a documentation) for their love & support.

I really appreciate all those wonderful comments/compliments I got from community members for my services. Special thanks to James Branam and Amit K. Saha.

Hi,

I will be hoping to write a blog each day to mark each day as a special day in the countdown to NetBeans 10th Birthday.

Tips and Tricks

At the end of the last entry, I had pointed to our NetBeans Community Docs Blog, where James had posted about “Call for Contributions: Tips and Tricks“. Do give it a read, its IMPORTANT.

Now, lets talk about the Tips and Tricks (taT’s) I contributed to the community. I have actually maintained taT specific blog entries, you can even subscribe to them as well, more details down below.

Coincidentally, I have blogged only 10 entries and 7 of them have been contributed to NetBeans Community Docs Program. So, lets have a look at them-

taT-10 | Open Projects w/o Browsing

Community Docs | TaT_02

So, as you can see there are 7 documentations, out of the 10 entries, I forgot I had another blog too, from where I have done some contributions as well, when program was going through Phase II. Have a look-

Phase II | Troubleshoot NetBeans Startup (Part 2)

Tally reaches 9

I need to contribute 1 more, making it 10 on 10 as 10 days to go for 10th B’day. Also, this is my 100th post for NetBeans category

Localization

I was wondering, if this could be an easy way to contribute, yes if you are not able to articulate any tips and tricks for the community. You can atleast do one thing, make use of my existing taT documentations (not blogs), and localize them in German, Spanish, Portugese, French or any other language you feel like in your blog as a post and comment back here with the link.

Also, email me- nvarun AT netbeans DOT org

Else, you may localize them directly onto the Community Docs wiki at http://wiki.netbeans.org/CommunityDocs. Also, NetBeans is a huge IDE, and there are lots of things you can write about. Just pick an area and submit a few tips and tricks. It’s that easy

Subscription

You can also add my feeds on taT’s into any feed reader OR you may subscribe through email as well. Have fun and be ready to celebrate the NetBeans B’day next week.

Party has just begun!

Its been 2 months, and I have not written any taT’s since then Anyways, its time to move on, and try out another cool trick

A different way of starting the IDE

Geertjan once blogged this entry, and said, “Drag and drop a desktop icon of a file onto the NetBeans desktop icon……and the IDE will start up, with the specified file open in the editor. That’s always been possible, but is [as far as I am aware] completely unknown.”

There are several such observations, which could be made, but it generally happens accidentally

Opening Projects..

Now, there are two ways of opening projects (created/maintained locally), that I have seen.

General way- Browsing from Inside

Firstly, you know that one has to go to “File > Open Project..” OR, use a shortcut key- “Ctrl+Shift+O”

Then, you browse to the location of the project and then you “Open” it in the IDE.

New way- Without Internal Browsing

Now, what you can do? Whether NetBeans IDE is running or not, it doesn’t matter, just use your system file browser which is faster than the IDE, and locate your project root.

Drag-n-Drop the folder over NetBeans Desktop Icon, if its not running, OR Drag-n-Drop it over NetBeans running instance. It will take some time, and project would be opened, that too as Main Project, by default.

What you have to do?

Execute this trick and comment, if you like. Also, if you have some of the tricks to share, which makes life easier for users, share it with NetBeans Community through NetBeans Community Docs Program! Another thing, if you’re not a blogger and want to share similar DnD discoveries with the community, you can mail me – nvarun AT netbeans DOT org

So, that I can blog about your discoveries, and contribute them to the above documentation project as well.

In month of August, when community docs program reached an important milestone of 200 docs. I thought of maintaining some statistics about the program, so I calculated the no. of docs contributed under James Branam (when he managed the program alone), Amit Kumar Saha (when he joined in Sep ‘07) and finally, when Amit left and I became the new coordinator.

I found out that the distribution was 50, 88, and 62 (respectively)- summing up to 200 docs. So, it was 62 in 3 months Well, few days back, i.e. on Sep 30, 2008- Total contributions were 226.

88 again, 12 to go!

That means 26 in 2 months- summing up 62 and 26, we get 88 docs! If you remember, when Amit left the coordinator position, same no. of docs were contributed under him. Don’t worry.. I am not leaving right now.. Its still a long way to go, I hope so!

However, that also means, I need 12 more contributions to make a century here as well. What say? Are you ready to contribute?

Many bloggers are invited and are in progress of writing it, they would soon be out with their documentations. You can also make a difference by contributing a documentation…

So, please do join us and contribute!

Hello all,

Its quite unusual to find an update over here, however I felt there’s already so much to blog at there, so you might miss out on some key information.

Team Expansion

Well there’s a phrase-“Fantastic Four and Bond, James Bond” , that came to my mind when James Branam, Program Manager blogged about the Evangelists. He writes-

The program is certain to benefit from their increased participation. I’m looking forward to working with them, and I have to say that with Varun, Amit, Kristian, and Aristides on board, we have one hell of a team.

So, that makes it Fantastic Four and surely, James Branam can be considered as Bond, James Bond

Blog Makeover

There were some structural changes made to the official blog, our program has. You would first of all, encounter the changes to the top, and right panel.

Statistics

We had started publishing Weekly Newsletter, which are delivered by email too either on Monday/Tuesday every week.

No. of subscribers- 16

Too less, isn’t it? What are you waiting for? Its just a one-time email subscription

Social Networking

That must be your favorite part, right! It sure does, as reflected by number of members joined in our Facebook Group.

There are 86 members, amazing! Are you a member there? If yes, thank you so much. If not, do consider joining us and interacting with other contributors.

Then, there’s one on MySpace as well, yet we don’t have many people there, so how about joining that?

Contributions

Today, we have 220 contributions. Amazing figure, thanks to the 2 consecutive record breaking months, which really propelled the growth. We are now going on a steady pace.

Apart from that, NetBeans Dream Team has been actively contributing, in form of Developer FAQ’s, Tips and Tricks, Spanish Tutorials, etc.

Significant Contributors

Diego E. Silva L., Hubert A. Klein Ikkink are the significant contributors who are non-DT members, whereas Aristides Villarreal Bravo is the only exception being a DT member and contributing significantly.

That’s all for today

Remembering the Titans…

I remember those days, when Amit had just started off as Coordinator of NB Community Docs Program, and it was just a mailing list, positive attitude, passion for NB that drove Amit and James to take the program past 100 docs, setup a blog, groups on Facebook and MySpace, what not?

It was just the beginning of an era, where you as community member got recognition, respect amongst others, as well as, interacted with the biggies of NB Community, like Geertjan, Jesse and Dream Team on mailing lists!

James and his fellow writers at our own mailing list, were equally supportive and helped in the growth of the program from time to time.

If you were not there,

I have come a long way, so has the program and you, an important part of the program, as a writer/contributor. Without whom, community wouldn’t have existed, problems would not have occurred, issues might not have been fixed, docs would not have been written to help fellow members, and I can keep goin’ on ‘n’ on, citing so many examples.

So much comfort, right…

Today, we lauched a weekly newsletter, and sort of started the next phase of the program. Few months back, we provided you so many facilities, Twitter, Technorati, Del.icio.us, Feeds, etc. Now, you can do 1-time email subscription for weeklies.

So much comfort, right? Yes, its being done for you, and many other things would come up soon, so as to sustain your interest for community’s growth, as well as, for your good, too!

After all, it boils down to one thing- Community Docs is there because of your support, and kindness to help community strive forward to reach new heights.

Community Docs needs you!
Are you with me?

So, this was just the inaugral post, a kind of jump starter for the blog series. Hope you would have fun.
