Its been a week, since I made a return to my home town and I have still not started doing anything productive. However, sooner/later you will found out from my blogs, what am I upto?

I have already subscribed to some of the mailing lists and looking forward to gain momentum in my efforts to understand NetBeans Platform. Also, having developed an interest in Java Enterprise Edition and Adobe Flex SDK over past couple of months, I am looking forward to gain more knowledge in these 2 technologies and how to put them together in use, effectively.

This time around, its more about doing rather than writing/talking. So, stay tuned to blog as I will present blogs that you may have never read before.

See ya..

I have been busy lately thanks to my internship project, which almost got screwed up. I was working in a team of 4 people, where we were building a web application, that was initially deployed at JBoss Server using JBoss Eclipse IDE (old version). Also, we had to interact with the centralized Oracle Server to setup our database for running the website.

Now, having being trained on some of those technologies in past few months, I thought it won’t be much of an issue. However, at the beginning of this month, I faced some weird issues which had no obvious answers. There weren’t any silly mistakes either. We were facing some issues with Oracle connectivity. I am not blaming Oracle or the company where we did the project. But, mix of old and new technologies, turned out to be quite confusing resulting in lot of trouble.

We were running out of time, so we decided to migrate our database to MySQL Server and use NetBeans 6.5 IDE, instead of old version of Eclipse. In the last 2 weeks, we were changing IDE’s, Servers and what not? After surpassing many hurdles, we completed the project and deployed it on the intranet with no issues.

Technologies Used

Servers: Apache Tomcat 6.0 Server running on one system, while the MySQL Server 4.x running on some other system.

Integrated Development Environments: JBoss IDE for Eclipse (2.0.0.beta2), Adobe Flex Builder 3 (Trial Version) and NetBeans 6.5

Experience

Although, we faced many hurdles while we strive towards the project completion, I picked up many skills and learned many tricks to speed up the development. It was an amazing experience and certainly enriching one! Stay tuned to my blog to learn a few.

Also, I loved using SQL Editor provided by NetBeans IDE, it was so easy to manage the databases. Whenever you “Execute Command…” any SQL query, the data shown in form of the table is basically a CRUD application. It looked like the Java Application, you could have made using Swing Application Framework in NetBeans IDE. In the following blogs, you would get to know more about SQL Editor. Now, internship is over and I am back in my home town.

I have been on and off this blog in the first quarter of this year. However, I think I will have more time in one month’s time as I would get more time to spend on NetBeans and share with you my learning’s. I was shocked to see a company like Sun getting acquired. You all know by now that Oracle is buying Sun and everybody is curious to know about the future of NetBeans and I am no different. Looking forward to see, how this “amazing product of the community” evolves.

Anyways, just to keep you updated, I had posted a blog on my other blog about some changes taking place in the past few weeks.

Today, I looked at my blog’s dashboard closely for statistics of top posts… I found only five had more than 900 hits and they all were published in the last quarter of the year, so that’s interesting.. Anyways, here’s the Top Five Entries;

01 | Top 10 NetBeans Platform 6.5 Features

Author

Geertjan Wielenga (Special Guest)

Abstract

Here are my personal favorite enhancements in relation to the NetBeans Platform for the upcoming 6.5 release.

Note that the NetBeans Platform is the infrastructure that underpins NetBeans IDE, as well as many other similar large modular Swing applications, hence this blog entry isn’t applicable to NetBeans IDE only.

It is applicable to any application built atop the NetBeans Platform. So, here are my personal favorite features, in no particular order…

02 | MySQL Admin and NetBeans 6.1 IDE

Author

Varun Nischal

Abstract

Few days back, I had blogged about “Tryst with MySQL“. Today, I shall move ahead and give an insight on database management with MySQL using NetBeans.

Its meant for Windows user only, rest can follow too, though just for the content and may try exploring these steps for their OS as well..

03 | Editor Hyperlinks (PHP to Javascript)

Author

Varun Nischal

Abstract

Wow, another surprise, did I miss something in release notes! I hunted again and again, I think I got the treasure first Actually, today I was again looking into PHP support, so thought of opening my first ever PHP application, I created using Dreamweaver 8, WAMPServer (which was actually my semester project) last December..

04 | Remote profiling with NetBeans

Author

Fabrizio Giudici (Special Guest)

Abstract

The NetBeans Profiler is well known as a fundamental utility for analyzing the performance of a Java application, as well as being a very intuitive and simple tool to run (of course, the real job of guessing the meaning of the figures that it produces is another story).

Actually, developing an application with the NetBeans IDE and profiling in just a couple of clicks is nice; but sometimes it is not the best option..

05 | VW JSF and Woodstock (NetBeans 6.5)

Author

Varun Nischal

Abstract

Nice to see the August build has a better support for VW JSF with Woodstock Components. It was a disappointing experience during last 2 weeks of July, since NetCAT began.

Features like On-Demand Binding Attribute were not working, syntax highlighting was not good, as well as, Deploy on focus..

Thank You

For the past few days, I have been receiving mails, lots of them from friends, relatives and mailing lists, with their greetings for the new year.. I replied, forwarded and even chatted (with some) to greet them for vacation break and new year..

Blogosphere

I even saw Amit and James blogging about how the year 2008 was, as they wait to see newer challenges in the near future..

Indeed, today its a New Year, New Beginning! So, expect the unexpected.. As I take you down my memory lane, to recapture some of the defining moments of my life this year..

Well, I missed blogging yesterday as I was busy preparing for a written exam that took place yesterday, before I could celebrate the new year.. Actually, this was my 8th (incl. of viva’s, presentations, exams) in almost 4 weeks time

Started with Emails..

2008 was an amazing year, so many up’s and down’s. It can’t get better than this..

Mails, Contests, T-shirts and DVDs..

I started off this year writing mails to dev@usersguide.netbeans.org and organizing events for JIIT Sun Club (later transformed into JIIT OSUM).

Soon, I shifted focus on competitions like Code For Freedom and NetBeans Innovator Grants.. succeeding in former one as NetBeans Community Significant Contributor and failing in the qualifying stages of the latter one

Also, I received some NetBeans T-shirts, some 6.0 DVDs for distribution and the rewards for above achievements.

Coordinator, Blog Contest and Dream Team..

Of course, how can I forget being appointed as Contribution Coordinator in May and tasting success along with some hiccups..

Also, during tough times I managed to come close to winning an international blog contest, though I ended as a runner-up

Then, an interview on my way to rising from ashes, made me feel good as I looked forward to more opportunities..

I feel lucky to have got the opportunity of becoming a NetBeans Dream Team Member, I am probably the youngest member of the team and still undergraduate

Reviews, Judgements, NetCAT and Projects..

While I joined “NetBeans Dream Team”, I reviewed “Dzone RefCardz”, judged some of the “NetBeans Innovator Grant” projects and qualified for participation in the “NetCAT Program” for the first time ever and it was an amazing experience..

Probably, this was the year I wouldn’t like to remember for the university and few other projects that involved coding as I couldn’t complete even a single project the whole year.. Strange!

I came close to finishing them all, but somehow circumstances forced me not to go further.. Simultaneously, I shifted focus from writing mails to blogging and as already mentioned, I was the runner-up at one of the contests as I looked for more..

NetBeans Birthday, Recognition and More…

“NetBeans Birthday Week” was something I will remember for a long, long time.. As I got recognized once again when “NetBeans Community Docs Program” got fully deserved recognition..

On the final day, I was looking forward to see the webpage dedicated to acknowledge people involved with NetBeans Project since its inception..

I was in for a surprise, as I saw my name amongst the list of outstanding community members for my leadership in “NetBeans Community Docs Program”..

Ended with Exams..

Coming back to yesterday’s exam, I was preparing for it for quite some time and indeed, its the first time that my friends from other colleges are on vacation, while I am still having classes the entire month of December, 2008..

Anyways, it will get over soon as I look forward to my internship at an Indian IT company this January.. There’s lot more coming up, stay tuned to my blog, as of today its a New Year, New Beginning!

Happy New Year

Namastey,

You have all seen me blogging for more than a year now. Some people call me crazy, avid, passionate and/or highly active (hyper-active) blogger Then, there were some who didn’t even bother reading my blogs OR commented negatively.

I never mind as I blog because I had developed an interest in it which made me passionate for blogging. Too, it helped me improve my writing skills, as last year I was new to blogging.

You might be surprised to know, but I was runner-up in an International Blogging Contest (June, 2008). Also, for the past several months, I have been writing 3 blogs…

2007- 13th Dec

I started writing my first ever documentation for the community. I had no experience in writing at such level. By the time, I finished writing the document using their online wiki engine, it was midnight. Yes, Dec 14th- my birthday. So, coincidentally, I wrote my first ever documentation on my birthday I realized this fact few days back while restructuring the community contributed docs archive!

2008- 1st May

I became NetBeans Community Docs (Contribution) Coordinator and I was feeling lucky to have got this opportunity to showcase my skills to the world through this wonderful platform. I thought its going to be easy, as I had closely followed Amit (K. Saha) while he was holding this position.

When I actually stepped into his shoes, they were really big. So, I realized, even though it looked very easy from contributor’s perspective, it isn’t. I had a tough time initially, when I invited people and they never responded.

Then, came a rough patch from May 22nd (since we reached 150 docs), I was finding it difficult to get new people to contribute. James (Branam) got a blogger whose 2 blog entries were converted to docs, initiating the counter for the month of June.

Entering final week of June, still 4 docs up there. It was definitely not a good position to be in. Around the same time, I was creating NetBeans Module (along with Jay) to take snapshots from within the IDE. I had to tweak the XML Layer a lot for registering Actions.

This made me write 8 docs (record was held for 5 months) within 3 days and contributed them on single day within that week. Position looked much better than it was and we had now got 12 docs. Still, 2-3 days were left and I interacted with my fellow blogging contest participants to contribute docs, they did.

Eventually, we ended up having 16 docs It was like rising from the ashes. I think I really did that, as this made me more determined and dedicated to help the community, as well as the project to strive forward. Along with James, we took the program to new heights. 150-200 in just 2 months!

2008- 13th Dec

Yesterday, I started making this post, and by the time I ended publishing it, it was midnight. I hope you might have realized by know, that its my birthday today. I am 21 years old

I had a wonderful year with NetBeans Community Docs Program, beginning as an active poster on their mailing lists, contributing documentations and finally, becoming Coordinator.

I have been maintaining a web page since April, where I have listed all the events that took place since I took over the position on May 1st. Its actually much more than that, it has complete information of how I got started and what all happened. Initiatives that I took, launching newsletters, exclusive interview and lot more.

Thank You!

I’ve always known that I’m a NetBeans user, but I would never have gone so far as to call myself a community member. I feel differently after this experience though. I’m glad to be part of the NetBeans community. If you use NetBeans, you’re part of the community too!

Wow Later that day, I got an email from NetBeans QA Team and I also had similar experience. Here’s what QA said,

In the past you have taken the time to report issues that you encountered while using the NetBeans IDE. As you may be aware already, a new version NetBeans IDE 6.5 has just been released.

We’d like to inform you that the following issues you reported have been addressed in the new version;

Aug 28, 2008

Three months back, I had blogged NetCAT 6.5 Weekly Report #6, where I had said,

Actually, when bugs filed by a user get fixed, they are not visible in “My Issues“, which is different for every user.

Nov 25, 2008

This day, when I received the mail and found out that, NetBeans QA Team had fixed 8 bugs filed by me during the development phase of NetBeans 6.5 and NetCAT Program.

We really appreciate your contribution to help us make NetBeans IDE (Platform, Java SE, Java Web and EE, Java ME, Ruby, C/C++, PHP, SOA) better for you as well as for other users. We look forward to receiving feedback from you in the future.

Wow, thats indeed a great way to notify the user, I mean community member. Happy NetBeaning!

Today, I begin a blog series on my learnings of NetBeans API’s, interacting with experienced folks on the mailing lists and browsing through NetBeans sources, that might help me (possibly others as well) “Create a New Project Type” in NetBeans IDE.

Abstract

I will be creating a project type that I could use in my final year project based on NetBeans Platform (updated Jun 10 ‘09). Right now, I don’t know how long this series would last, but I would try to cover as much as I learn. Feel free to present your views (negative/positive), suggestions or enhancements to the approaches I will follow.

Introduction

The NetBeans IDE (starting with version 4.0) organizes user work into projects. Each project corresponds to exactly one project folder on disk. A given disk folder may be a project folder or not; you cannot have two projects in one folder.

What do I think?

I think they are talking about a disk folder having a single /nbproject sub-folder, would be considered as a project by NetBeans. That means, we need to create an implementation of an interface, Project.

Project (Project API)

This (public) interface (which extends another interface Lookup.Provider) resides in Project API (Its primarily of interest to the project type provider modules, infrastructure & generic GUI).

public interface Project
extends Lookup.Provider

Now, there are two methods to be implemented, one of them specified by Lookup.Provider[1], present in Project (due to inheritance) and the other by Project[2] itself.

Refer Javadocs…

[1] http://bits.netbeans.org/dev/javadoc/org-netbeans-modules-projectapi/org/netbeans/api/project/Project.html#getLookup()

Objects implementing interface Lookup.Provider are capable of and willing to provide a lookup (usually bound to the object).

[2] http://bits.netbeans.org/dev/javadoc/org-netbeans-modules-projectapi/org/netbeans/api/project/Project.html#getProjectDirectory()

Lookup getLookup()

Get any optional abilities of this project.

As we are providing a project, so there are a number of interfaces which one should consider implementing and including in lookup, some of which are described in the related Javadocs. I will discuss only those which I have implemented.

private Lookup lookup =
                Lookups.fixed(new Object[]{
                    this,
                    new MarkupInfo(),
                    new MarkupLogicalView(this),
                    new MarkupProjectOpenedHook(),
                    new MarkupProjectXmlSavedHook()
                });

Twist in the Tale..

Hey, I had just mentioned and as per the Javadocs, we are required to add implementation of some of the recommended abilities, which I would refer to MarkupInfo (implementation of ProjectInformation) and MarkupLogicalView (implementation of LogicalViewProvider).

However, one can also add some instances of classes extending certain abstract classes. In the above case, I would refer to MarkupProjectOpenedHook (subclass of ProjectOpenedHook) and MarkupProjectXmlSavedHook (subclass of ProjectXmlSavedHook) as the abstract classes.

Status: In Progress, Not Yet Usable

Online Resources

There’s a guide which should give developers of NetBeans modules (extensions), a basic idea of how to write new project types for NetBeans 4.x, as well as use certain important parts of the project and build system functionality from other kinds of modules.

NOTE

The reader is assumed to be familiar with the basics of developing NetBeans modules: how to compile Java sources against API-providing modules, make the JAR, write the manifest and XML layer, register services in global lookup, etc.

For background, the reader is encouraged to first look at the general design document which explains how the different pieces of the architecture work together to provide the user functionality.

June 04, 2008

Geertjan blogged on the new features of Plugin Portal- Verification, Email Notifications, Plugin Manager, etc.

June 20-24, 2008

Almost 3 weeks later, Geertjan blogged about his first plugin to officially get into the Plugin Manager for NetBeans 6.1

Also, during that time, Jay and I decided to first upload our first ever plugin made for the community, and then requested the Plugin Verifiers to evaluate the plugin for NetBeans 6.0

Soon after, verification failed due to lack of license, then I referred Geertjan’s blog to get it done.

June 27, 2008

Jay and I, blogged on the events that were taking place during that time, as I was in the process of writing blogs for a blog series (based on XML Layer). So, the snapshots used in blog series were taken with the help of the plugin we developed.

July 24, 2008

Almost 1 month later, I had blogged about a new plugin that I had created in July, got inspired from the existing plugin at Plugin Portal, and Tutorial based on that plugin. This was enough for me to get motivated and work towards enhancing the plugin, and I did.

Thanks to Geertjan for the approval to work on the revision of tutorial, as well as the plugin. Eventually, I ended up writing a lengthy tutorial as well Later on, reposted on the NetBeans Zone [Dzone].

Then, I requested for this plugin to get verified for 6.0 as well. I was glad to have uploaded Snap It earlier as this time there were no issues, it was only a matter of time.

October 27, 2008

Few months later, I received mails from nbadmin, notifying that- both the plugins got majority votes in favour of publishing the modules in the Plugin Portal Update Center for NetBeans 6.0!

May 31, 2009 (Downloads Update)

Recently, I received mails from nbadmin, notifying the current status of the plugin’s and you can see the numeric changes in the “download details” of respective plugin’s. M (+N) means that there has been an increase of N downloads from previous total (M-N) and now, total is M downloads.

FYI, I have committed source code for one of the plugin’s (Revamped Hyperlink Navigation) mentioned in this blog below. I did this long time back, i.e. on January 09, 2009. I have created a project at Project Kenai and have committed sources there.
Snap It

We named the plugin as “Snap It”;

Its a plugin that enables you to take screenshots from within the IDE. Basically, it tries to emulate the “Take Screenshot” Utility, bundled with almost every Ubuntu Distro. Hey, I saw it on OpenSolaris 2008.05 as well.

To bring the NetBeans 10th birthday celebration to a close, we have a special interview with Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz. He talks about why developers are important to Sun, looks back on how software development has changed over the last 10 years, and why NetBeans matters to Sun and the industry. And it turns out NetBeans and Jonathan have something in common…!

1998-2008: My Observations

If I look back to evaluate the decade of NetBeans evolution I must emphasize the growth of the NetBeans community not only in terms of absolute number of active users but also in terms of participation in the project and contributions. I remember that when I started as QA Engineer, 8.5 years ago there was one guy from community helping with JavaCVS library and now?

Plugin Portal, NetCAT and Dream Team

There are 400+ plugins from community, 500 people participated in NetCAT programs so far, thanks to community volunteers we have now fully moderated high volume mailing lists, other volunteers certify community plugins and manage content of the Plugin Portal Update Center.

Many people blog about NetBeans, our Dream Team members evangelize the product, others write books about it or simply test it and provide us with their feedback.

Vibrant Community, Traffic on Mailing lists

There are people giving us patches to help us fix bugs because they don’t like only complaining about them. So in my opinion the NetBeans project has gained a vibrant and energetic community over the years.

Now let’s prove that in numbers-

Did you know?

There are over 500,000 unique subscribers in our public mailing lists? Let’s for example focus on our most important mailing list nbusers@netbeans.org.

According to the picture above we can see that in September 2000 there were 487 messages exchanged while 8 years later in September 2008 it was 1871 e-mails.

Of course, we also track download statistics. To date NetBeans was downloaded by almost 25 million users either as a standalone product or via bundles. As we can see in the chart below the growth of NetBeans downloads is obviously enormous.

Dramatic Increase In Participation

The last fact I wanted to highlight is a dramatic increase of people who not only use NetBeans but in addition to that dedicate some time and effort and report issues into our bug tracking system.

The stats below shows unique reporters from community and how many bugs they reported during the past 10 years.

Ten times on Tenth Birthday

And again if we compare these numbers we notice 10 times increased participation. Ten times! Can you imagine a better way to celebrate the 10th birthday of NetBeans? I can’t.

I often ask myself, why are they doing all this? What is their motivation? It’s very encouraging to realize they all contribute it for free. In my humble opinion all of the above leads to one conclusion: We must be doing something right here!

Thank You

Well, I am Jiri Kovalsky (Jirka) and I was invited recently by Varun Nischal (one of our most active and passionate NetBeans community members by the way) to contribute a post for his blog. Those who know me also know that I don’t have my own blog so while this is an absolute honor for me it’s also an absolute premiere!

Fortunately, Varun didn’t specify any concrete topic which helped me overcome the initial hesitation. I assume nobody is going to read a plain post without any useful content so I decided to do some data mining and share with you my findings about NetBeans community.

Jirka, thank you so much… Its an honor to have your first ever blog entry on my blog… Also, thanks for supporting my ideas and encouraging me to work towards Wiki-markup Editing support in NetBeans.

Once again, we sign off saying, Happy Birthday NetBeans!

He is not only the liaison officer for the NetBeans Dream Team but also for many activities like the NetBeans Innovators Grant contest. To the community, Jiri is probably best known for coordinating the NetCAT quality program.

List is certainly long
