Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act

Pryce applauded the signing of the legislation she authored titled the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act. We are asking everyone to help us spread the word. We are calling for a "bum rush" of all of the social media you can get your hands on, ultimately directing people to the CNCF's Neuroblastoma Handbook. We are asking you to blog about the handbook, write entries on your caringbridge sites, and to include links and badges on your websites. The idea is to create as much awareness as we possibly can about the handbook. Ideally we want it to be in every family's hands but we need your help to let everyone know that it exists. Senate Appropriations Committee encourages FDA to prioritize review of treatments and clinical trials for high-risk neuroblastoma

The Senate Appropriations Committee passed its 2009 funding bill for the FDA late last week (Senate Report 110-426). In the bill, they encourage FDA to prioritize review of new treatments and clinical trials for high-risk neuroblastoma and other pediatric cancers and report back to Congress on progress made. The House version of the bill includes a similar provision. ...(read more)

An online charity auction on ebay is benefiting the CNCF. This autographed guitar was donated in Caleb Larson's memory to benefit neuroblastoma research through the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation. Donated in support of the 1st Annual Cowboyin' for a Cure in Graham, Texas, this guitar is signed by many of country music's greats. Dr. Metin Gurcan receives the Young Investigator Award to pursue project on children's neuroblastoma prognosis

The Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation has awarded Dr. Metin Gurcan of OSU BMI with the young investigator award to pursue his project “Computer-assisted Prognosis of Neuroblastoma.”

Neuroblastoma is one of the most common pediatric solid tumors with the lowest 5-year survival rate among all childhood cancers. There is a considerable variation among pathologists in evaluating histopathology of neuroblastoma tumors. Dr. Gurcan will develop a computer-assisted system for more accurate and less variable prognostic evaluation of neuroblastoma tumors. He will be collaborating with Dr. Hiroyuki Shimada of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, a world-famous neuroblastoma researcher, whose classification system was adapted as the International Neuroblastoma Classification System to assess neuroblastoma tumors. Dr. Gurcan will also be collaborating with Center for Childhood Cancer at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

Dr. Gurcan will use this two year award to develop new techniques in neuroblastoma cancer image analysis. In his recent publications Dr. Gurcan has demonstrated the feasibility of analyzing neuroblastoma tissue slides to extract clinically relevant information with high accuracy.

Dr. Gurcan is a very active researcher in computerized analysis of histopathological images (http://www.bmi.osu.edu/~gurcan). He is organizing a special focus session on computational histopathology at IEEE ISBI conference; a workshop on histopathology imaging at MICCAI Conference and will be teaching a tutorial on “Microscopic Image Processing and Analysis Techniques” at IEEE’s International Conference on Image Processing.

Dr. Gurcan has been elected to the grade of “Senior Member” by IEEE and is the recipient of The National Cancer Institute, “caBIG Embodying the Vision Award.”

The 4th annual "FORE NOAH" Golf Tournament to benefit the Children's Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation raises $83,000!!!

We would like to thank the Nelson Family and all of their friends and supporters for another successful golf outing. And to Longbow Golf Club for hosting the event. We appreciate all of your hard work, dedication and commitment to making a difference in the lives of these children and their families. Thank you again for a tremendous effort!!!

Thanks to everyone - primary sponsors (Longbow and the McNichols family, Pay-Tech and Westcor), golfers, auction/raffle donors, monetary donors, Hole Sponsors, volunteers and committee members. Farr Jog-a-thon

Quynh Gibney, Candy Harrison and David Gibney. Quynh & David are the parents of Christopher Gibney who passed away on December 19th, 2007 from NB. Candy, a teacher at Farr Elementary School, organized a Jog-A-Thon fund raiser with the Farr Elementary PTA in honor of Christopher to benefit the CNCF. They raised over $3,000. Farr Elementary School is in Escondido, California near San Diego. David is a band teacher at Farr. The fund raiser had the support of the Escondido Union School District and students and families from several schools in the diverse community participated.
