Black in America Misses the ‘Why’

The cable television program "Black in America" focused on several different socio-economic issues that affect African-Americans in today's society. Aired on CNN, host Soledad O'Brien takes the viewer on a journey through various neighborhoods; effectively shedding light on dark issues that have plagued Black America for some time. Issues such as education, marriage, pregnancy, and violence in different communities throughout the country were highlighted, giving the viewer insight into a plight that only the Black community often feels. While O'Brien did a fantastic job telling the stories of various individuals she interviewed, little emphasis was placed on the story behind the story. Not much focus was given to the "why" in these particular scenarios.

How To Stop a Republican From Laughing

Generation Kill is a fine minseries being shown on HBO. It does not pretend to be anything that it is not. It is a grunt's eye view of the initial invasion of Iraq. I was watching the last episode with my filthy rich republican uncle, who, despite his dogged desire to remain a member of the thirty percent of people who still approve of George W. Bush has been having that faith rocked hard, again, and again.

Leadership on The Wire

Popular culture can be a great source of material for lessons about leadership and the daunting challenge of creating meaningful, sustainable change in organizations and society--and it can provide a way to connect work, home, community, and self. For example, in the first meeting of my leadership and teamwork course in Wharton's MBA program this Spring, I mentioned how the recently-completed HBO TV series, The Wire was loaded with stories from which we could learn much about leadership and change. It's a huge hit in my family (not least because my brother, Paul Ben-Victor, is one of the actors), and we all regard it as the best that's ever been on TV.

Racist: The N-Word for White People

For white Gen Y'ers, 'racist' is the worst tag of all. Master TV satirist Stephen Colbert frequently pokes fun at the notions of racial political correctness by having his brash conservative pundit character proclaim that he cannot see race. It's a simple and reliably funny conceit that plays on the prevalent, if specious, notion that we live in a post-racial era, one that ignores, or optimistically shrugs off, the lingering and substantial issues between the races.

Invincible: Opportunity in Crisis

The Detroit rapper reflects on her music, activism and inspirations. Balancing art and activism is a challenge. Just ask Ilana Weaver, better known to hip-hop fans as Invincible, the Detroit-based emcee who has been rapping for well over a decade. A 2002 XXL Magazine feature lauded her as a talented lyricist and seasoned performer. She was also called "every A&R's worst nightmare" due to her notorious reputation for turning down record deals and butting heads with industry stalwarts.

Some major sponsors have pulled advertisements from BET, due to the gratuitous violence, profanity and obscenity on some of the cable network's programs, according to a report in the Chicago Defender.

The Moment Men’s Fashion | The New Black

Italy is not a country that is known for its tolerance or its embrace of multi-culturalism, and yet, all of a sudden the runways in Milan are crowded with black models. (I say black and not African-American because most of them were in fact recruited from France and England.) The news of an entire "black issue" of Italian Vogue photographed by Steven Meisel is still fresh in the American press. Both Guy Trebay and our own New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn have gone far to bring to our attention the lack of ethnic diversity on the fashion runways, in advertising campaigns and in editorial pages of magazines.

Popular Hip Hop Site Gets Hacked By Tech-Savvy Racists

Hate 2.0. As of right now, hip hop website SOHH.com is down. This is all well and good, because you probably didn't want to see what was on it earlier. The site was attacked by a group of very anti-SOHH, anti-black, anti-Jew hackers, who infiltrated the forums, splashed racist and anti-semitic pictures on the homepage, and changed all headlines to things like, "Jews Did 9/11″ and "Enjoy This White Wimmenz, N*gger." The group, which gets no publicity here, tried to blame the disturbance on comedy site ebaumsworld.com.
