Jeff on Edwards Admits to Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate:

Very sad and disappointing. It’s amazing how much of the MSM kept quiet on this the past two weeks.

Not a very good sign for the media when the National Enquirer is the only outlet breaking a story and pursuing this.

I’d much rather hear from ABC about who there four independent sources were that claimed the anthrax used in the attacks were linked to Iraq.

koroth on Primates 'face extinction crisis':

Hey,

It’s been fun. It’s a problem with a complicated solution, but if enough people give a darn and are willing to work for a win-win solution then I think it can be solved.

koroth on Primates 'face extinction crisis':

A society needs to move away from subsistence level farming and what it moves to isn’t necessarily destructive. "Industry" is a catch-all phrase here and doesn’t have to imply strip mining and belching of toxic substances into the air.

Show these people how to create their own wealth, come up with some incentives to keep it clean, and I think we can have our cake and eat it, too.

Countries with high yield agricultural methods become food exporters and countries where people can own property and create wealth can do quite well. They may well take loans and accept investments. People are pretty sharp when they have control and the government stays out of the way. Countries with brain dead governmental systems (Velezuela, Zimabwe, etc.) become basket cases.

You’re right about the crushing debt, and part of that was from the greed of the lenders and part from bad government policy and part from sheer igorance. Show the people how to make the best use of that money and those loans become assets.

"Subsistence, industrial, and service economies can be destructive or life affirming. How we decide to do it is what matters." I think you’re absolutely right here.

derek on Primates 'face extinction crisis':

I agree with 70% of what koroth has said, however stating that, "... moving an economy from subsistance to industrial and services will greatly reduce the need to destroy habitat," is incomplete and misleading. The mainstream economic development model states that countries should develop economically and move toward greater industry and a service-based economy.

The problem at least threefold. First, industrializing countries becoming net food importers as they move away from farming. Food will have to be produced somewhere, which leads to more monocropping. And not every country on the planet can be a net food importer. Second, the damage from an industrialized world on the environment has been orders of magnitude greater than that of any subsistence society. Third, as countries take loans to become industrialized, they gain huge debt, and the wealth of the country in terms of people and material is extracted and shown as gains to multi-national corporations and the world banks.

I do recognise that some elements of subsistence living can destroy ecosystems as well, with chopping wood for cooking fires and heat, and killing animals for body part trade and for food. So what is at the core is a need to evolve consciousness and democracy … real democracy where the people take ownership of their lives, their community, and the planet. Subsistence, industrial, and service economies can be destructive or life affirming. How we decide to do it is what matters.

Some related sources would be John Perkins’ Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, and David Korten’s The Great Turning, among many other great books.

With the direction our country is heading censorship would only be the beginning. The Bush adminiustration would prefer a total dictatorship.

koroth on Primates 'face extinction crisis':

This really is something that people can, in theory, do something about. The habitat loss due to clear-cutting for farms and such can be releived by better farming techniqes and moving an economy from subsistance to industrial and services will greatly reduce the need to destroy habitat or to hunt and eat these creatures.

Another factor in this "crisis" is the body part trade. Especially with Gorillas, where parts are harvested and sold on, primarily Asian, markets as trinkets and aphrodesiacs. Kill that trade and you’ll take a lot of pressure off these creatures.

The last couple of paragraphs show what we can do.

I wonder if they are attempting to discourage orders from being placed.
