Some boards use NCEES Exam Administration Services to release the results directly to examinees; some release them through another testing service such as PCS; and other boards release the results themselves. In addition, some state boards must validate the results at a board meeting before they can release them to examinees.

• The Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam will have new specifications and will now be a closed-book exam. Examinees will be provided with surveying reference material (PDF) on exam day. No other references will be allowed for PS examinees. A new edition of the NCEES PS Sample Questions and Solutions is available.
• The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Software Engineering exam will be offered for the first time.
• The PE Industrial exam will have new specifications and move to a spring administration. October 2012 was the last time this exam was offered in the fall administration.
• The PE Civil exam will have revised design standards for the Construction, Civil Structural, and Transportation modules. The design standards for these civil engineering areas have been updated for 2013.

The standard-setting study will take place May 17–18, 2013, in Clemson, South Carolina. Travel and lodging expenses will be paid by NCEES. Selected volunteers will review and rate the difficulty of items that will be included on the updated PS exam. The volunteers’ responses will help NCEES determine the passing score for the exam.

NCEES requires a cross section of licensed professional engineers practicing civil engineering—including those working in consulting, the public sector, and academia—to complete an online survey about the tasks and knowledge required of a licensed civil engineer with 4 to 6 years of experience to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Responses must be received by March 4, 2013.

“These studies help NCEES ensure its licensing exams remain relevant to current professional practice,” explained Director of Exam Services Tim Miller, P.E. “The value of this PAKS depends on the number of people who participate, so NCEES is eager to get a large response from P.E.s across all areas of civil engineering.”
