Bob passed away earlier this month.

The Alameda native also won his hometown Alameda Commuters six times, and was a two-time runner-up in the California State Amateur. Blomberg played in the Bing Crosby Pro-Am five times, and had 10 holes-in-one and an albatross to his name.

Bob was born on April 4, 1945 to Ben and Irene Blomberg in Alameda, California. His father, Ben, was approximately a 45-year career Navy man who served in the US military during WWII and enabled Bob to live in many places, but far and away, Bob was a lifelong Alameda resident.

Bob attended Frank Otis, Lincoln School, and Alameda High School graduating with the class of 1963. In 1963 after high school, Bob turned professional serving as an assistant pro at The Presidio Golf Club and Sequoyah Country Club, until 1966. Realizing his true love for amateur golf, Bob applied to regain his amateur status, and in 1968, this request was granted by the USGA.

Bob then went to work at Bethlehem Shipyard in Alameda in 1968 working in the metallurgy department until 1976 with its closure. From there, Bob went to work for Cochran & Celli in Oakland selling new Chevrolets until 1995. Bob then went to work for American Brass & Iron Foundry, in Oakland, as a sales representative until 2010, at which time he retired.

Bob’s amateur golf career

As a newly reinstated amateur Bob wasted no time by winning his first amateur event by capturing the prestigious Oakland City Championship in 1968. From this point on Bob excelled at the local, regional, national and international levels where Bob’s golf accomplishments are significant:

San Francisco City 2nd Flight Champion – 1961

King City Junior – 1963

Alameda Commuters Champion: 1974-78-79-84-86-93

Oakland City Champion: 1968-1971-1977-1980-1982-1987

California State Amateur Championship: runner up 1975 and 1982

NGCA 4 Ball Championship: 1987 and 1993

NCGA Master Division Champion: 1992

National and International

Biarritz (French) Cup Senior Champion: 2000

British Amateur and Senior British Amateur 2002 and 2004

Pacific Coast Amateur – Top 10 1997

USGA Public Links: 1968, 1969, 1971(runner up), 1993 and 1995 (semi-finalist)

USGA Senior Amateur: 2002 and 2004

French Amateur – 1981

The collection of NCGA, USGA, and other prestigious tournament medals that Bob won over the years are a site to behold. His NCGA medals alone count up to 18. Bob had been invited five times over the years to participant in the Bing Crosby Pro-Am at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

In 1999, Bob was presented the California Sports Writer’s John Swanson “Good Guy” Award. In 2001, Bob was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Northern California Golf Association, for his 30 years of stalwart play, great golf sportsmanship and for always behaving like a true gentleman. Bob’s on-course demeanor and the way he related to his fellow competitors exemplified the true spirit of the dedicated amateur golfer.

Bob’s love of golf and helping others around the Bay Farm links is legendary. Bob was always a helping out the Alameda High golf teams in giving sage advice on course management or a tip with your swing. Bob joined the Alameda Golf Club in 1976 and continued that support by serving as an AGC Board of Director from 1981-1983. In 2003, Bob was honored by the AGC with an Honorary Life appointment. One of Bob’s favorite golf courses was the Earl Fry course at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex where Bob holds the course record, firing an 11 under par 60.

Bob joined the Alameda Commuters Committee in 1991 to further his love and dedication to one of Northern California’s premier amateur golf events. In 2013, the Alameda Commuters Committee elected to honor all champions going forward with the “Bob Blomberg Champions Medal.”

It is without a doubt that Bob was Alameda’s ambassador to golf and a gentleman that everyone was proud to know and be around. Bob’s mother Irene was a permanent fixture at practically every tournament Bob played in and had a lot to do with Bob’s success on and off the golf course. Bob’s brother Ben was always at Bob’s side caddying for Bob for over 35 years of championship play, and was no doubt responsible for some of Bob’s more impressive victories. Ben is now retired in Tucson, Arizona.

Bob spent a lot of time with his wife Laurie Hobson’s children and grandchildren traveling around the country sightseeing. Many in the golf community were never made aware that Bob spent four years (1963-1967) in and out of the hospital suffering from hepatitis, which nearly took his life. That is why the accomplishments Bob has achieved are so very significant and speaks to the character of this man.

Alameda may have a lost a championship golfer, but the memory of friendships last forever. Bob was a friend to many and will be remembered by all.

A memorial celebration of Bob’s life will be held on July 27, 2013, at 2:00 PM at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex.

Donations can be made in memory of Bob to:

June 7, 2013

MONTEREY – Ideal conditions and weather made Del Monte GC plenty vulnerable for the NCGA Senior Net Championship final round and it showed in the 36-hole scores. The three winners of the 50th Annual NCGA Senior Net Championship were Bob Pieroni (president), Bill Carle (director) and Larry Fillmore (secretary).

President Flight Winners: Bob Pieroni (champion), Roger Exline (runner-up) and Fernando Gonzalez (third place).

Pieroni of Citrus Heights won the president flight—players with a handicap of 11.0 or less—with a two-day total of 138, six-under par. Starting the day four shots off the lead and in a four-way tie for sixth, Pieroni fired a net five-under par 67 following his first round 71 to take a three-shot victory. Getting off to a slow start with back-to-back net bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3, the Morgan Creek GC member closed out his nine nicely with net birdies on Nos. 6, 7 and 8 and a net eagle on No. 9. Again on the back nine he took a net bogey early on the 12th before making three net birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 15.

“It’s going to sound corny, but it’s a dream to win [an NCGA event],” said Pieroni. “I’ve been playing in these for 40 years and I’ve won a silver [medal] before and a bronze, but never a gold.”

Two players tied for second place with scores of 141, three-under par: Roger Exline and Fernando Gonzalez. Exline, who was awarded the second place medal via a scorecard playoff, followed his opening round 68 with a net 73. Gonzalez, taking home the third place medal, improved slightly scoring a two-under par 70 after opening with a one-under par 71.

Director Flight Winners: Bill Carle (champion), Jim Thurman (runner-up) and Bob Albertson (third place).

In the director flight, players with handicap indexes between 11.1 and 14.4, Bill Carle ran away from the competition earning an eight-shot victory. Building off an already impressive first round score of five-under par 67, Carle fired a 10-under par 62 on Friday to finish with a 36-hole net score of 129, 15-under par. Carle got going quickly with two net eagles in his first six holes on Nos. 2 and 6, and then added a third net eagle on the back nine on the par-3 12th. Besides his three net eagles, Carle also had six net birdies and two net bogeys.

“It was nice to be able to finally find the putter and sink some putts,” said Carle on his exceptional play.

Capturing second place after starting the day with the 18-hole lead was Jim Thurman of Clayton. Thurman couldn’t replicate his first round six-under par 66, but still played one better than his handicap carding a net 71, one-under par for a 137, seven-under par net total. Third place went to Bob Albertson of Clovis, who followed his first round 68 with a 71 to finish at a net score of 139, five-under par.

Secretary Flight Winners: Larry Fillmore (champion), Michael Freire (runner-up), Richard Jones and Frank Correa (tied for third place).

The secretary flight, which features golfers of handicap indexes of 14.5 and above, saw the lowest winning score, a 127, 17-under par by Fillmore. Beginning the final round one-shot off the lead after opening with a seven-under 65, Fillmore improved on that round by posting a 10-under par 62 on Friday. After making a net bogey on the first hole, the Brentwood resident rattled off three straight net birdies chased by a net eagle before closing the front nine with a net bogey. On the back nine, Fillmore had an even more impressive stretch of holes on Nos. 11-16, making three net birdies and two net eagles before taking a net bogey on No. 17.

“I give myself as a goal to qualify for one NCGA tournament every year and I’ve been able to do that since I’ve lived here in Northern California,” said Fillmore, who has been playing in various NCGA net events for the last two decades.

In second place with a 36-hole score of 133, 11-under par was 18-hole leader Michael Freire. The El Dorado Hills resident held a one-shot lead over Fillmore after a first round 64, eight-under par, and despite his final round of three-under par 69, Freire amazingly finished six strokes back. Richard Jones and Frank Correa tied for third place with 36-hole scores of 138 as both competitors matched one another’s 18-hole totals with a 70 and 68.

June 6, 2013

MONTEREY – The first round of the 50th Annual NCGA Senior Net Championship took place Thursday at Del Monte GC and there were plenty of red numbers to be had among the 111 competitors. At day’s end the players leading the three different flights were Tim Elias (president), Jim Thurman (director) and Michael Freire (secretary).

In the president flight, players with handicap indexes of 11.0 or less, Elias fired a net score of five-under par 67. The Petaluma resident made six net birdies on the day and only one net bogey, which came on his final hole of the day the par-5 ninth. Elias was one of 10 players in the president flight to post an under-par score, meaning he’ll have plenty of competition in his rearview mirror for tomorrow’s final round.

Tied for second place at four-under par 68 are Gilroy’s Michael Hoshida and Roger Exline of Roseville. Both players’ rounds included two net bogeys and a net double bogey, while Hoshida’s round also included two net eagles and four net birdies compared to Exline who had a net eagle and six net birdies. Rounding out the fourth spot in the final group of the president flight is Jim Fuoti of Orangevale at three-under par 69 and alone in fourth place.

The director flight, consisting of players with handicap indexes between 11.1 and 14.4, is led by Jim Thurman of Clayton who posted a six-under par 66. His round included a net double bogey, a net bogey and nine net birdies, six of which came on Del Monte’s front nine—his back nine—for a net 30.

Thurman is closely followed by Steve Oase and Bill Carle at five-under par 67. Oase of Pleasanton, had a similar round to Thurman as he plodded at the beginning of his round on Del Monte’s back-nine before making a move on Del Monte’s front nine scoring a net 31. Santa Rosa’s Carle, who also started off No, 10, bogeyed his first and penultimate hole, but had seven birdies sandwiched in between to get to five-under par. Tied for fourth place at four-under par 68, with one of the players joining the final group of the director flight, are Ron Ruzich of Live Oak and Bob Albertson of Clovis.

Freire, who leads the secretary flight—players with handicaps of 14.5 and above—shot the low round of the day among all competitors with an eight-under par 64. Things got off to a bumpy start for the El Dorado Hills resident as he took two net bogeys in his first four holes with a net eagle in between to find himself at even-par on the fifth tee box. However, over his final 14 holes Freire would convert two additional net eagles and four net birdies to get to the eight-under mark.

Right behind Freire and alone in second place is Larry Fillmore of Brentwood at seven-under par 65. Fillmore very well could be in the lead if it weren’t for a net triple bogey. The rest of his first round consisted of two net eagles, seven net birdies and a net bogey. In third place at four-under par 68 is Roark Weber, while a logjam of golfers are tied for fourth at two-under par 70: James McLay, Frank Correa, Augustus Kamburis, Richard Jones and Rich Staples.

The final round of the Senior Net Championship will conclude tomorrow at Del Monte GC with play commencing at 7:30 a.m.

CARMEL – After consecutive years of finishing second and third at the CIF Boys State Championship, Stevenson School had nowhere to go but up. On Wednesday at Quail Lodge GC, Stevenson did exactly that winning the 2013 CIF Boys State Championship with a team score of 368, 13-over par.

“We’ve been so close the last two years and now we finally did it,” said junior Seb Crampton.

The small private school located Pebble Beach was led by the junior, who fired a one-under par 70, but ultimately it was a collective team effort as solid rounds by Drew Nelson (71, even-par), Sunny Yan (72, one-over), Michael Decker (76, five-over) and Nick Simmons (79, eight-over) accounted for the team’s total. Senior Kyle John, who posted an 82, 11-over par, had his score thrown out as the format takes the top five of a team’s six scores.

With all the Stevenson players going out in the first six groups of the day there was a good hour of waiting around the scoreboard to see how de facto tournament favorites Sunny Hills HS would fare. All players on the Sunny Hills team went out in the final six groups and after their start player Jack Chung, the fourth player to post, came in with a five-under 66, there was a feeling from the Stevenson camp that it might be the bridesmaid once again.

2013 Boys State CIF Runner-up: Sunny Hills High School

“I thought [Sunny Hills] was going to win it,” said Stevenson head coach Bill Hankison after Chung’s 66 was posted. “But once I saw the second [to last] score posted I thought, ‘now wait a minute.’”

That second to last score posted was an 80 by David Won, and when the final Sunny Hills score was posted, a 76 by Chris Chu, a loud cheer came from Stevenson’s players, coaches and parents. The Pirates had a CIF Boys Golf title to their name, edging out Sunny Hills by two strokes 368 to 370.

“That was very exciting,” said Hankinson. “You never want to wish anybody to play [poorly], we just were fortunate [to win].”

2013 Boys State CIF Individual Champion: Jack Chung

Hankison, who has been the varsity golf coach at Stevenson School for several years now and at the school for 36 years total, was glad to finally come away with a state title. He paid tribute to his predecessor John Powers, who he claimed built the program to where it is today. While many players and their parents were now proclaiming that Hankinson can retire as a coach, Hankinson has no plans hanging it up as he’s already signed a contract to coach through 2014.

“We’ve got a real good nucleus [of players], so I’m very excited for next year,” he said.

Despite coming up short of winning a team title, Sunny Hills’ Chung won the individual state title with his stellar five-under par 66. After playing the first eight holes at even-par with a pair of birdies and bogeys, Chung got revved up and finished with six birdies and one bogey over the final 10 holes.

“I was just trying to shoot [a score] like I did at the SCGA/CIF Championships,” said Chung, who coincidentally won that individual also with a 66. “I was just trying to go [low] to help my team.”

Finishing as runner-up in the individual championship was Michael Delgado of Branson High School, who fired a three-under par 68. Corey Pereira of Ponderosa High School and Josh McCarthy of De La Salle finished tied for third at two-under par 69. Three golfers finished tied for fifth at one-under par 70, including Crampton, Tailin Song of Torrey Pines High School and Brandon Tsujimoto of Damien High School.

CIF Boys State Championship Preview

June 4, 2013

CARMEL – The CIF Boys State Championship returns to Northern California for 2013 and will be played at Quail Lodge GC in place of its normal locale, Poppy Hills, while it’s under renovation. Six teams will square off for the title on Wednesday, three from Northern California: Archbishop Mitty, De La Salle and Stevenson; and three from Southern California: Oaks Christian, Sunny Hills and Torrey Pines.

De La Salle HS won the NCGA/CIF Championship on May 21 at Diablo Grande GC winning with a team score of 373, 13-over par. De La Salle located in Concord, is led by senior Justin Pagila, who finished second place individually in the NCGA/CIF Championship with a score of three-under par 69.

Second place finishers in the event were Archbishop Mitty HS of San Jose. Archbishop Mitty proved to have the most consistent team as all six players shot within five strokes of each other and had sub-80 rounds. They are led by Shintaro Ban, who posted a 74 at the NCGA/CIF championship.

Stevenson School, the third place finishers in the NCGA/CIF Championship, has a couple advantages that the other two Northern California teams don’t: location and event familiarity. Stevenson is not only a mere 10 miles from Quail Lodge GC, it also has been to the last two CIF Championships, finishing second in 2011 and third in 2012. Three of the six members of Stevenson have played in the last two CIF Championships, Seniors Michael Decker and Drew Nelson and Junior Seb Crampton.

In the SCGA/CIF Championship Sunny Hills HS knocked off two-time defending champion Torrey Pines HS. Sunny Hills located in Fullerton posted an impressive team score of 363, three-over par at Brookside GC. The Lancers are led by Jack Chung, who posted a six-under 66 in the championship, good enough to win the SCGA/CIF individual title as well.

Torrey Pines HS, who fired a team score of 368, eight-over par, were the last high school to win a championship on Northern California territory, winning in 2011 at Poppy Hills GC. Danny Ochoa is the only returning player from that championship team, but he was fourth out of sixth place among his teammates this year in the SCGA/CIF Championship. Leading the way for Torrey Pines HS was Aaron Strockis carding a two-under par 70.

Oaks Christian HS was the third and final team to qualify, totaling a score of 373, 13-over par. The Lions had a very consistent team with all six of their players posting rounds between 71 and 77, led by Sam Orue.

Besides the likes of Pagila, Chung and the other aforementioned players, there will be several players competing solely for a CIF individual title. Jordan Koelewyn of Central Valley Christian posted a 66 in the SCGA/CIF Championship, but lost to Chung in a sudden-death playoff to lose the individual title. He’ll be joined by other SCGA/CIF individual competitors Ki Taek Lee, Robert Deng, Michael Howe, Brandon Tsujimoto, Blake Barens, Alex Angard and Andre Vu. NCGA/CIF individual winner Ryan Maund won with a four-under par 68, playing a bogey-free round at Diablo Grande GC. Joining him from the NCGA/CIF Championship are Corey Pereira, Andrew Buchanan, Truett Waldon, Nick Rivera, Justin Suh, Bradley Knox, Will Brink and Miguel Delgado.

Action begins at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning with the final tee time at 9:20 a.m.

Rounds of golf at more than 600 golf courses in 25 states and assorted travel packages will be available to the public for online bidding, June 6-16, offering access for golfers that otherwise might not have been possible.

Known as Rounds 4 Research, the auction is a venture of the Environmental Institute for Golf, the philanthropic arm of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. It is presented in partnership with the Toro Co. Funds generated from the auction will go to support researched-based activities of GCSAA, its affiliated chapters and regional turfgrass organizations.

The auction, available through www.Rounds4Research.com, will include several packages for high profile golf events such as the 2014 Masters and U.S. Open golf tournaments, and destinations such as the Old Course at St. Andrews, Bay Hill Resort in Orlando and Camelback Resort in Scottsdale. Courses in the auction include Grand Cypress Resort (Fla.), Trump National Golf Club (N.Y.), Redstone Golf Club (Texas), Brae Burn Country Club (N.Y.), Stanwich Club (Conn.), Daniel Island Club (S.C.), Country Club of Georgia (Ga.), Victoria National Golf Club (Ind.), Southern Pines Golf Club (N.C.) and numerous others.

“Online auctions are popular because they provide entrance to some of the nation’s top facilities, but they also offer golfers great deals on other high quality facilities that might not have national name recognition, but still offer an enjoyable experience,” said GCSAA President Patrick R. Finlen, CGCS, director of golf at Olympic Club in San Francisco. “We believe those who go to the auction will be pleasantly surprised by the menu of courses available to them.”

Finlen also noted that whether golfers realized it or not, their purchases are directly benefitting them and the game they love. Funds will be used by GCSAA and regional superintendents/turfgrass organizations to fund activities that lead to better course conditions.

“Surveys have time and again revealed that the golfer experience is based on course conditioning,” Finlen says. “By investing the revenues from the auction in research-based activities, we can develop new grasses and management programs that can enhance conditions, but not at the expense of the environment and not as a result of spending more money on inputs such as labor, water, and plant products. This is a very necessary investment the golf industry – companies, associations and golfers alike – must make if the game and facilities are going to remain viable.”

About the EIFG
The EIFG is the philanthropic organization of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, and has as its mission to foster sustainability through research, awareness, education, programs and scholarships for the benefit of golf course management professionals, golf facilities and the game. With respect for the game and the environment, the EIFG inspires environmental, social and economic progress through golf for the benefit of communities. Collaboration between the golf industry, environmental interests and communities will lead to programs and services beneficial to all who come into contact with the game of golf.
