Jones Angell, the "Voice of the Tar Heels," will join the EV Spectrum Skills Camp to provide play by play commentary for the camp's final basketball game on May 31. The game, a scrimmage in Carmichael Arena, will cap off a four day camp for young adults with developmental disabilities.

The EV Spectrum Skills Camp is organized by volunteers and hosted by Extraordinary Ventures, the Chapel Hill Carrboro Chamber of Commerce's 2012 Nonprofit of the Year. Jones Angell has volunteered to provide commentary as a way of making the experience unforgettable for the participants.

"I'm thrilled to be able to help make this camp even more memorable and exciting," said Angell.

All attendees of the camp will be young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. About 20 campers are expected this year.

"The camp provides a great environment for campers to get out of the house, engage in physical activities and socialize," said organizer Stefan Hansen. "Many of these guys don't have a lot of chances to get out of the house, and we're providing that for them."

The EV Spectrum Skills Camp will take place from May 28 to May 31 at Extraordinary Ventures on South Elliott Road.

The final game featuring Jones Angell will be the morning of May 31 at Carmichael Arena and is open to the public. An awards banquet will follow at Extraordinary Ventures. All campers will receive a trophy and superlative.

About the EV Spectrum Skills Camp

The purpose of EV Spectrum Skills Camp is to provide summer social opportunities for young adults with developmental disabilities who would otherwise be at home. The camp allows the participants the chance to engage in physical activity while providing an ideal social situation for everyone. The 2013 sponsors include Brixx, Chick-fil-A, Jersey Mike's, Merritt's Store & Grill, Empower Personalized Fitness and Bombshell Studios.
Healing Waters Cosmetic Spa & Clinic Discusses Health Benefits Of Regular Relaxation

DURHAM, N.C. – Healing Waters Spa & Cosmetic Clinic ( http://www.healingwatersbeauty.com ), a medical aesthetic clinic, has announced that Kirsten Rank, registered nurse, recently recorded a podcast outlining the importance of regular relaxation as an essential factor for maintaining overall health and wellness. In the podcast, Rank discusses the direct health benefits associated with regular relaxation and provides various treatment options for the busy, modern day woman. Additionally, Rank shares details about Healing Water’s Pure Commitment™ Membership Program, a unique option for clients that offers an introductory facial for $75, which is a 40 percent discount from the original price, and one facial per month for 11 additional months priced at $99 each, in addition to other benefits.

High stress levels caused by constant demands and hassles can produce negative effects on an individual’s health, relationships and work performance. According to Rank, practicing regular relaxation techniques can be a reliable method for preventing the negative outcomes associated with stress and provide numerous health benefits when practiced consistently. As Rank mentions, regular relaxation is proven to slow heart rate, decrease blood pressure, increase blood flow, decrease muscle tension, increase energy, improve sleeping patterns and enhance immunity to common viruses. Additionally, Rank notes that Healing Waters Spa & Cosmetic Clinic offers a number of specialized services for the busy modern day woman, including massages, body rituals, and facials, as well as individualized membership programs customized to fit the individual, with multiple options available based on the client’s needs.

The podcast is available to download at, http://bit.ly/167KDeB.

QUOTES:

“These days, people are taking on more and more responsibilities and have increased demands, which can have a direct negative impact on our lifestyle and overall health,” said Rank. “Practicing stress management and regular relaxation techniques can dramatically decrease these negative effects. Here at Healing Waters Spa & Cosmetic Clinic, we offer a complementary consultation with clients in order to better identify individual needs and provide the best relaxation options and treatments for each individual.”

“The direct benefits of setting aside time for regular relaxation are undeniable,” said Amanda Gorecki, president and founder of Healing Waters Spa & Cosmetic Clinic. “As women, we tend to put the needs of others first. However, we need to take care of ourselves to effectively take care of the people we love. Establishing a planned and regular relaxation routine is critical to positively shape our health, decrease stress and its negative effects on our bodies, strengthen our immune system, counteract the effects of aging and provide immeasurable benefits to our psychological health. At Healing Waters, we believe regular relaxation is the perfect solution to calm an anxious mind, balance your daily life responsibilities, correct bad habits and restore healthy living.”

“FairHaven has proven to be a really popular community for us,” says Tamara Lynch, M/I Homes vice president of sales and marketing. “This section of FairHaven will cater to people who enjoy having all of their primary living areas on the main level. We’ve found that the 50 and older market as well as families that are smaller in size especially prefer this type of design.”

Highlights of the five home plans include some brick or stone exterior accents, deluxe master bathroom with garden tub and separate shower, large family room, dining room, and upstairs lofts, extra bedrooms or bonus room. The model home at The Elms will be The Marvin, merchandised by Kay Green Design. Construction is expected to start on the model home in August. The Marvin can be built as 1.5 stories, with three to four bedrooms downstairs and up to two bedrooms upstairs plus a loft.

Homes at The Elms are pre-selling now. Call Michael Colo at 704-363-4317 or email salescharlotte@mihomes.com to tour the site and find out more, or visit www.mihomes.com/info.

Washington, D.C. - Fuentek, LLC ( http://www.fuentek.com/ ), a consulting firm based in Apex, N.C. that provides intellectual property (IP) and technology transfer services, has announced that Laura Schoppe, president, served as an external expert panelist for the Lab-to-Market Cross-Agency Summit. Sponsored by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the summit took place on May 20. As an expert in innovation and commercialization, Schoppe was asked to provide feedback on enhancing lab-to-market programs for the benefit of the public. The federal government invests over $140 billion in research and development annually—through research institution grants, small business contracts, and civil servant research efforts—and OSTP convened the panel to help maximize the return on investment for the US taxpayer. The summit allowed experts and federal lab staff to explore current programs and discuss challenges as well as potential solutions.

Along with other experts from industry, academia and the finance sector, Schoppe discussed ways to leverage synergistic missions between federal agencies, align federal research activities with economic development needs, as well as more efficiently and effectively bring research innovations to the market.

The all-day summit, which was held at the White House Conference Center, resulted in a list of recommendations that will be documented in a memo to the President.

QUOTES:

“Our candid discussions with the federal agencies having to implement the White House’s future policies and recommendations were very productive and encouraging,” said Schoppe. “I feel privileged to have been included on such a panel of experts and look forward to seeing continued improvements in how federal labs bring value to the economy.”

Raleigh Nightspot Amplifies Social Media Marketing with Video Sneak-Peek Inside

Raleigh-based photographer/filmmaker Allen Weiss has created a new video for Oryx Ultralounge that’s intended to amplify and energize social media marketing for this popular nightspot in the Glenwood South entertainment district.

Adam Ajaj, one of the partners in Oryx, asked Weiss to capture the “young, energetic vibe” of his nightspot.

“I knew a video would be a good tool to attract a young crowd to Oryx, especially on Facebook, so I asked my friend Allen to use his expertise to do this. We wanted to make sure we were sending the right message – that Oryx is the place for the young, energetic, fun, and stylish crowd on Glenwood South,” said Ajaj, who also owns the Glenwood Avenue convenience store, Raleigh Beverage, and a new neighborhood bar next door to it, Havoc.

“The importance of quality video as a marketing tool can’t be underestimated,” Weiss said. “YouTube has the highest time-on-site rate of any social media platform. Why? Because it’s such a powerful tool for storytelling. If people have a choice between reading a lot of text or clicking on a video, guess what they’ll choose? A well-done three-minute video tells a business’s story immediately.”

What story does Ajaj’s new video tell? “The flavor and essence of the Oryx experience,” Weiss said. “In two minutes, it tells you exactly what a typical night at Oryx might be.”

To got the story, Weiss spent several evenings in Oryx capturing (with patrons’ permission) groups of young, well-dressed folks laughing and talking; bartenders creating cocktails; and cocktail waitresses interacting with the crowd, all while interior lights cast various colors across the room and the driving beat of a soundtrack echoes the energy of the place.

Weiss smiled as he recalled his assignment. “It’s refreshing to work directly with a client I know as well as I know Adam, especially when the assignment is ‘shoot some cool stuff.’ Period. Adam gave me total access and freedom to shoot and edit as I pleased. Directors seldom get such a gloves-off approach.” To view the Oryx video: https://vimeo.com/62710192

Allen Weiss is an accomplished photographer, videographer, filmmaker, and director who honed his visual storytelling skills by directing, and often filming, national and international television commercials and public service announcements.

Christine John-Fuller, President and CEO of the Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter (LFANC), has been selected as one of the “2013 50 Most Influential Women” by The Mecklenburg Times.

“I am very humbled and honored to receive this honor and to be in the company of so many extraordinary women who are making a difference in our region,” said John-Fuller.

The Mecklenburg Times created the “50 Most Influential Women” award to spotlight the 50 Influential Women in the Charlotte region who are working within the business, government, education and non-profit fields.

About Lupus

Lupus is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body. It is difficult to diagnose, hard to live with, and a challenge to treat. Lupus is a cruel mystery because it is hidden from view and undefined, has a range of symptoms, hits out of nowhere, and has no known cause and no known cure. Its health effects can range from a skin rash to a heart attack. Lupus is debilitating and destructive, and can be fatal, yet research on lupus remains underfunded relative to its scope and devastation. An estimated 45,000 North Carolina residents and 1.5 million Americans are estimated to have a form of lupus.

About the Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter

The Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter is part of the national force devoted to solving the cruel mystery of lupus while providing caring support to those who suffer from its brutal impact. We work with local health professionals and volunteers to provide information and programs to ensure people with lupus and their families get answers and health professionals know about new means to diagnose and manage the disease. The chapter now serves an estimated 45,000 living with lupus in North Carolina. For more information about lupus or the LFANC, visit www.lupusnc.org or call (877) 849-8271.
TMH Announces The 2013 George Matsumoto Prize For Modernist Houses

George Smart, Executive Director of Triangle Modernist Houses (TMH), has announced the 2013 George Matsumoto Prize to recognize excellence in recent single-family Modernist residential design in North Carolina. Submissions are being accepted starting today.

Now in its second year, the Prize is named for George Matsumoto, FAIA, a founding member of the NC State University School of Design faculty who is well known for the mid-century Modernist houses he designed in North Carolina.

The Matsumoto Prize is a unique design awards program. Unlike other programs, the Prize offers monetary rewards ($6000 total), online public voting along with a blue-ribbon professional jury, and this program focuses on the houses submitted rather than those who designed them: The houses, built since January 1, 2007, must be in North Carolina but the designers can be from anywhere and they do not have to be licensed architects or members of the American Institute of Architects. (In North Carolina, you do not have to be a licensed architect to design a private residence.)

The Matsumoto Prize is also transparent. All information submitted, including the designer’s name, will be published online and available to the jurors and the public. The public vote counts for one-sixth of the jury decision for the final award winners. The houses with the highest number of public votes will also receive special “People’s Choice” recognition. Public voting will begin on www.trianglemodernisthouses.com in early July and end July 20th.

Again this year, George Matsumoto will serve as the jury’s Honorary Chair. Also returning to the jury are: Frank Harmon, FAIA, (Chair) of Frank Harmon Architect PA, Raleigh; Marlon Blackwell, FAIA, of Marlon Blackwell Architect, Fayetteville, Arkansas; Tom Kundig, FAIA, of Olson Kundig Architects, Seattle, Washington; and Larry Scarpa, FAIA, of Brooks + Scarpa Architects, Los Angeles, California.

Triangle Modernist Houses is an award-winning, non-profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving, and promoting Modernist residential design. According to George Smart, the objectives for the Matsumoto Prize are “to expand the public’s awareness about the great inventory of North Carolina Modernist houses, to showcase the skills of the North Carolina residential design community, and to inform the public that great design can be well within a homebuyer’s reach.”

“We hope these entries demonstrate to the public that Modernist design is affordable, efficient, sustainable, and most importantly, a house a family will love decades,” he added. “We also want potential homeowners to realize that, by using an architect or designer, they can have a great home for the same budget as an ordinary house.”

Competition rules, submission procedures, and deadlines are available online at www.trianglemodernisthouses.com/prize2013. To see last year’s submissions and winners: http://www.trianglemodernisthouses.com/prize.htm.
