Ride The Rails In Western North Carolina

On Saturday, March 31, the Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum will sponsor its “Spring 2012 Excursion” — a train ride on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad through the breathtaking Nantahala Gorge in Western North Carolina. The excursion will feature the majestic Smoky Mountains and the beautiful countryside of Western North Carolina in all of its spring glory. The excursion train will follow the route of the former Southern Railway’s Murphy Branch, established in 1891, with its five percent grade; many bridges; and the whitewater Nantahala Gorge. Much of the route follows the banks of the Little Tennessee and Nantahala Rivers. It crosses Fontana Lake trestle, 100 feet above the lake with a span of 780 feet. After crossing Fontana Lake, the train will enter the Nantahala Gorge — a natural wonder.

Today I was wandering around on the web and discovered the UNCTV YouTube Channel. This video from Our State TV about my favorite mountain begged to be shared. Enjoy.

Since I’ve missed a trip to the NC Mountains in 2011 this YouTube Channel will have to serve as a virtual mountain dream reminder till I can return to the mountains I love.
