The Colours of Nelson: a Mural Project is inspired by the love of public art and the desire to see more murals of diverse styles in the city of Nelson, through a process that invites the community to collaborate and taps into it’s rich creative voice and collective imagination. As the idea for this project grows, community organizations and artists are in dialogue about how public mural art could look in our town, and creating a shared vision while working together to bring the ideas into frutition.

On March 9^th, diverse members of the community met for a Roundtable Discussion at the NDYC, which was open and free to the community, to brainstorm potential themes for a mural at Lakeside Park, on the abutment of the Big Orange Bridge.

Then, a work group comprised artists between the ages of 16 and 29 come together with the coordinators of the project, Amber Santos, Sérgio Santos, and Artist Mentors, Rhoneil Eurchuk, and Bryn Stevenson. The group met three times to work with themes drawn from the community’s input and the entire group made sketches around the themes, created a composition and talked about the different phases of the project. Each artist in the group brought their original ideas and style to the group.

The approval process opened up a dialogue that helped artists understand what City Hall needs to see as a design for a mural on a public wall while bringing insight into the artistic process, to the CityHall. All partnering organizations looked at the design and it was approved by everybody, including the Nelson and District Arts Council, Nelson City Police, Daybreak Rotary Club, Nelson and District Youth Centre, Nelson City Hall and the Department of Highways/Ministry of Transportation.

ArtWalk 2012 Call for Artists at ndac.ca Nelsonʼs premier arts festival is back for its 24th year. ArtWalk is calling for applications  from emerging and professional artists to display original work in downtown venues in an eight-week extravaganza beginning July 6th.

At a presentation held at city council chambers Tuesday, April 10, NDAC President, Stephen Fowler quoted Carolyn Kolmel of Kolmel Jewelers, as saying that “it’s a wonderful, festive event. It’s good for business, but even if it wasn’t we’d still do ArtWalk. It’s wonderful having the art in our store”.  ArtWalk is great for the artists, our visitors and Nelsonites too.

Here at Nelson District Arts Council (NDAC) we have been receiving lots of emails from Artists who are ready to put a show together in a local business venue.

The Call for Artists is official. The artist application can be printed off from our website. ndac.ca Artists can now read the guidelines on the  Website and start to get their portfolios ready. The deadline for applications is May 30, 2012.

NDAC has asked Joy Barrett to once again to be our ArtWalk Event Producer. Joy is the City of Nelsonʼs Cultural Development Officer and Executive Director of Castlegarʼs Sculpture Walk. She is super busy. If you want something done, always ask a busy person. Joy gets it done and will be contacting local businesses soon. She has received requests from some new businesses already. We are fortunate to have her working with us again this year.

Thanks to an upcoming 6-month CKCA project grant to rebuild our Nelson & District Arts Council, we are now embarking on a journey to create a new, exciting and thriving arts council.

ArtWalk 2012 is a go. Local businesses become galleries and you will have the opportunity to buy local art. NDAC anticipates at least 30 artists and 20 venues this year. The call for Artists will go out soon but in the meantime, Artists can address their questions to artwalk@ndac.ca right now. This event has become a tradition in our town and gives Nelson the reputation as ‘the biggest little arts town’ in Canada. More music and exciting projects are being planned for this year.

Thanks to Everyone who came to the Roundtable Discussion on Friday, March 9^th at the Nelson District Youth Centre for the Colors of Nelson: a mural project. There were over 35 attendees and everyone had a chance to express ideas about public art in Nelson and the upcoming mural at the abutment of the ‘Big Orange Bridge’ facing Lakeside Park. There was at least one representative from all partnering organizations as well as members of the community, with a diverse range in ages.

Applicants should be professionals performing in a recognized form of dance, be it traditional, contemporary, experimental or historical (i.e. folk, ballroom, etc.). Applications can be made on an individual basis or on the behalf of a dance troupe or company for a field of work. Preference will be given to dancers or companies who will be performing outside the City limits, in addition to in Nelson.

Nelson’s ArtWalk offers area artists the opportunity to have their work viewed by more than a thousand art-lovers; it gives downtown businesses a doorway into creative culture; and it’s a veritable feast for the ArtWalking public.

This cultural smorgasbord is served up by the the Nelson & District Arts Council with the genreous support of the Cultural Development Commission, the City of Nelson, the Columbia Basin Trust and everyone involved. Locals and tourists alike simply pick up a brochure and get ArtWalking.
