Downtown Parking Conversation: Draft Report, Panel Discussion, Council Work Session

The NDDC’s Council-initiated, Staff-supported, Downtown Parking Conversation is coming up to milestones, roadside attractions, and destinations on the road to parking enhancement for Northfield. Supporters of a vibrant and vital downtown will want to explore these places of interest.

The draft report on the Downtown Parking Conversation is available for your review. You can find it at Parking Management for Downtown Northfield. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

There will be a video conference panel discussion about parking in downtown Northfield this Monday afternoon. Representatives of the stakeholder groups will share experiences and ideas. For more information, go to Parking Management for Downtown Northfield.

Finally, the final report on the Downtown Parking Conversation will go to the City Council on Tuesday, May 14th at their work session. More information on your local government is available at the City of Northfield’s website. Your City Councilors are interested in your thoughts about parking in downtown Northfield.

Downtown, Uptown, and On the Hill…this Weekend in Northfield

In New Orleans, down river is Downtown and up river is Uptown.

Up river (that’s the Cannon River) in Northfield is the Arcadia Charter School. This weekend, they’re doing The Laramie Project. It recounts the story of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming who was kidnapped, beaten, and left to die. This production is a mixed cast of Arcadia students and adults from the Northfield community. Students under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

Up on the western hill, there is St. Olaf College. They’ve got a bit of a reputation…for their music. This Sunday, afternoon and evening, there’s a whole lot of music going on up on that hill. It includes a chorus and some singers, Norse brass, and some of that nationally-recognized St. Olaf Jazz. Check it out and see if the reputation is well-deserved.

Then there’s downtown. At least three places have live music on both Friday and Saturday nights. We are fortunate, here in Music City, Minnesota, so come on down(town) and enjoy it.

“A Minnesotan Goodbye”, the Carleton & St. Olaf 5th Year Apprentice/Intern Exhibit, opens this weekend at the Arts Guild’s gallery in downtown Northfield. The artwork of six St. Olaf and Carleton College art interns: Anda Tanaka, Anders Nienstaedt, Arielle Rebek, James Wilson, Justina Ny, Mathew Brutger and Sheila Novak will be featured in the Gallery through May 18. Attending an opening reception for a new art exhibit is a pretty good way to start your weekend.

No contra dance experience needed, free lessons provided from 7:00 to 7:30, or just come to enjoy the fun and listen to great music. We’re preserving the wood floor in the West Gym, so bring soft-soled, non-marking shoes or sneakers, or dance in your bare feet. Hey, if that doesn’t work to bring on the Spring, next weekend we’ll try dancing naked around a fire.

Did they ever really leave? There are, of course, frequent sightings at the lutefisk buffet up at St. Olaf, and I know they get all their party supplies from Paper Petalum, and it’s been said that they are looking forward to the coming of Medevia Brunnsorkerter in August (but they’re not quite as excited as Sven and his wife), but I’ve often wondered how they spend their weekends between their annual Joke Night at the Grand Event Center…

It’s the annual art show of Northfield students grades K-12 at the Northfield Art Guild gallery. Working in a wide variety of media, these emerging artists help to demonstrate why Northfield is such a vibrant Art Town. The opening reception on Saturday offers a day of art, dance, music, and theater for all ages.
