The month of October is coming to an end and today, we welcome the upcoming month of November with our beta launch of Explore feature - Singapore’s Local Travel Guide. This brand new feature aims to provide valuable information on “Places To Visit” within the enchanting garden city of Singapore.

Unlike our flagship feature of What’s Nearby, the Explore feature showcases every single “Places To Visit” right before your eyes. From Heritage & Historical places to City Attractions, nearby.sg has archived a wide variety of interesting places in Singapore which you may have never visited or heard of.

Combined with our nearby framework, you can now discover interesting places in Singapore and at the same time, search what’s near these places.

Nearby HTML5 Mobile Version Updated 3.7.2

Great start for the new month. We’ve recently upgraded our HTML5 mobile application with a brand new LBS framework and a few features. Updates are made available across all mobile platforms, namely: iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Nokia Symbian. WebOS, etc. To access, simply visit http://nearby.sg on your mobile devices.

1) Auto Geo-Location - Improved accuracy for auto locating your current position.

2) Faster Location Search - Searching for address is made faster with our own databases

The co-founder of Apple Inc, one of the world’s great entrepreneurs, who transformed the worlds of personal computing, music and mobile phones, died on Wednesday at the age of 56 after a years-long battle with pancreatic cancer.

It was saddening to note that it was only a month ago that Jobs stepped down as CEO saying at the time, “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.”

The Silicon Valley icon who gave the world the iPod, iPhone and iPad was deemed the heart and soul of a company that rivals Exxon Mobil as the most valuable in America.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve,” Apple said in a statement.

Apple paid homage to their visionary leader by changing their website to a big black-and-white photograph of him with the caption “Steve Jobs: 1955-2011.” The flags outside the company’s headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop flew at half mast.

Our condolences go out to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Mr Steve Jobs.

It's New! Toggle Between Your Google & GoThere Maps

Today, we’ve loaded a new feature which allows our users to toggle between their preferred map options. Over the past year, we’ve concluded from local users that Google map for Singapore is rather outdated in terms of details and overlays. At such, we’ve added an alternate map option from GoThere. This new feature will allow our users to easily toggle between Google Map and GoThere Map. Do check out the new feature.

Live Bus Arrival Timing Is Now On Nearby.sg

Utilizing our database of bus stop locations and combining the mashup api from SBS transit, we are happy to announce that live bus arrival timing is now back on Nearby platform. Our users can now access the approximate live timing for each bus at a bus stop via both our web and mobile platform.

4 days back, we received reports on bugs and usability issues for the previous version of nearby.sg’s iPhone mobile application. We have since resolved the bugs and updated new algorithms for its search capabilities. In additional, we have made improvements to the design and layout of content to improve usability of the application. Below are some of the changes.

Visible inline shadow shown on the search box has been removed.
Users can fall back to the main screen by clicking on the nearby.sg logo shown at the top of each page.
Map display has been reduced to 95% of the screen size to allow ease of scrolling
Search for address has been made 70% faster by relying on our own databases of address. Accuracy has also improved.
Bugs for sub category has been resolved.
In the event where no results are found within the max 4km radius of your location, our application will display the top 3 nearest results. (Same update applied across other platforms)
Compressed version to deliver a more light-weight application which greatly increases the speed of delivering results.

nearby.sg is moving into its 4th month of operation in Singapore with over 115 categories and 14762 point of interests till date. Lots of changes have been implemented over the last couple of months in terms of our design, technologies and developments.
