Opening Night Reception: Saturday, November 14, 2009 from 7-10 pm
Alex Alferov, Yrneh Brown, Nancy Buchanan, Chukes, Carol Colin, Kathi Flood, Sophia Gasparian, Graham Goddard, Miguel Angel Murillo, CCH Pounder, Suzanne Siegel, Joseph Sims, Charles Swenson, Richard Turner, Mark Vallen, Ted Waltz

The year 2008 was historic in the fact that a Black American became our 44th President. We have asked our artists to demonstrate how they perceive the first year, the honeymoon period, of the Barack Obama Administration. He has taken office facing high expectations and immense challenges. Some questions we ask our "365" artists to consider are: Does race affect political choices, or is it more a class question? Have opportunities for minorities advanced? What about health care, the turmoil in the Middle East, the economy? Obama has declared a new spirit of engagement with the UN to confront global challenges, from climate change to nuclear proliferation. But is his foreign policy decisions an extension of Bush administration policy known for its political and international aggression? Our "365" artists tackle these challenging questions with works that are aesthetically profound and timely.

November 14 through December 6, 2009

And Our Annex Presents:

The Writing On The Wall
A typo-active installation by Kay Brown, Poli Marichal and Marianne Sadowski

"A baited banker thus desponds,
From his own hand foresees his fall,
They have his soul, who have his bonds;
'Tis like the writing on the wall."

Jonathan Swift (Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, poet 1667-1745)

Taking the idiom, "the writing on the wall" (a portent of doom or misfortune, first used in the Book of Daniel), as a point of departure, artists Kay Brown, Poli Marichal and Marianne Sadowski have printed a series of flyers and other works on paper using phrases, slogans and idiomatic plays on words that address current issues concerning politics, ecology and ethics in a visually suggestive manner.

The artists intention is to create a space for thought and meditation in order to promote a call for pro-active action and grass roots militancy and a return to common sense and self-sufficiency.

Brown, Marichal and Sadowski were inspired by the oeuvre of artists such as Barbara Kruger, Ellen Rothenberg and Jenny Holzer, among others, who use type to inform, provoke, agitate and confront the viewer.

The works were printed using a Laguna etching press owned by Sadowski and a Reprex letterpress proof printer owned by Marichal. Many of the phrases were created using vintage wood letterpress fonts and/or stamped fonts owned by Brown over monotyped abstract backgrounds.

How to Avoid Having to Trash Your Stuck, Leaky Windows
Presentation by Ed and Batya Sanchez of Window Restoration and Repair, Inc.
The Highland Park Heritage Trust is sponsoring a talk by Ed Sanchez of Window Restoration and Repair. This event is a must for anyone considering the replacement of windows, especially on older homes with original wood or steel windows. Mr. Sanchez will talk about how to successfully preserve and repair wood and steel windows. The approach is proven to help retain the value of a house, maintain its architectural features, and save money.

7:30PM Annual Election Meeting
Election committee will present a suggested list of Board of Directors for the 2010 Fiscal Year. Nominations are welcome from the floor. All members in good standing are eligible to run for the Board of Directors and to vote.

8:30PM Adjournment

About the speaker: Ed Sanchez originally began working in the window replacement business in 1983, and opened his own window replacement company in 1986. He lost faith in replacement windows because they didn’t last as long as the originals and he decided to follow his inclination toward historic preservation. Ed and his long time friend, Scott Goldfarb, started the new company Window Restoration and Repair in 2000. The unusual offering of this company has led to articles in many local papers such as the Glendale News Press, Pasadena Star News, Larchmont Chronicle, and Press Telegram and recommendations in the Daily Variety and Cottages and Bungalows. Many of the articles can be read in their entirety in the press section of the company website: www.window-restoration-repair.com Window Restoration and Repair has done restoration work for the Bembridge House, the Hotel Laguna, the historic building that houses the Cheesecake Factory in Pasadena on Fair Oaks and Colorado, the original country club for the Country Club Park district in Los Angeles and many other designated historic buildings.

Papel picado (perforated paper) is the Mexican art of paper cutting. Using sharp chisels and a hammer, elaborate designs are cut into a stack of tissue paper creating decorative banners, which typically are used to decorate for festive events such as weddings and quinceañeras, and on altars. Papel picado can also be made by folding the tissue paper and cutting with small, sharp scissors.

3 sessions Thursdays October 15, October 22, and October 29; 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Workshop overview: In this 3 day workshop, you will learn a brief history of papel picado; how to cut traditional papel picado on tissue paper using only scissors; how to design and draw a pattern which you will then cut using a more advanced technique which employs hammer, chisels and craft knife.

Session one: Brief history of papel picado. Examples of paper cutting in other countries. Create papel picado using scissors. Begin to draw your own pattern in preparation for chisel work.

Session two: Complete drawings. We will be using hammer, chisels, and craft knives to cut your original design or use provided pre-drawn patterns.

Session three: complete projects or begin new ones. How to string the paper. Explore other types of paper and other uses for paper cutting such as making cards and flags.

Margaret Sosa has been creating papel picado for over 25 years. She learned the art form from master paper cutter Olga Ponce Furginson in Los Angeles. Margaret has received countless commissions for her work and her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums as far away as Glasgow, Scotland. She has taught papel picado to children and adults at various schools, museums, and galleries. Margaret has a BA degree in studio art from Cal State L.A. She lives in the Mt. Washington area of Los Angeles.

$60 for all three sessions (checks payable to “Avenue 50 Studio”)

That's all ancient history. Tomorrow night, the 2009 NLCS starts at Chavez Ravine. Here's a breakdown of both teams and my prediction for the NLCS:

Pitching:

The Dodgers have suffered with their starting rotation while The Phils have gotten stronger. Starters Cole Hamels and Pedro Martinez should provide an edge over Kershaw and Vicente Padilla. Kershaw is undefeated at Dodgers Stadium but the Phillies have his number. Padilla is red-hot but so is Pedro at this point.

Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee should be unbeatable in Game Three. Edge: PHILLIES

Bullpen:

The Dodgers excel out of the bullpen while the Phillies have had their trials and tribulations with Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge. Both performed well against Colorado but the ghost of 11 blown saves continues to haunt the Phils. Brett Myers just can't pitch on the road and LA has the home field advantage. If it comes down to the late innings, Jon Broxton is about as good you can have on the hill. EDGE: DODGERS

Offense:

Manny Ramirez is the best hitter of this generation but continues to be a head case. Phillies slugger Ryan Howard is all business. The Phillies have perhaps the best offensive punch in baseball unless facing a dominant pitcher. If the Dodgers get behind early, and can't produce runs, the Phillies should be able to hold on. EDGE: PHILLIES

Defense:

The Phillies oufield and right side of the infield matches up better than the Dodgers. The Dodgers edge the Phillies behind the plate and on the left side of the infield. The Phillies bats are mostly left-handed so this could be a slight edge to the Phillies. I'll call it a push.

Bench:

On paper, the Dodgers are much deeper than the Phillies but the bench shouldn't be a factor in this series. If we have extra inning games, expect the Dodgers bullpen and deep bench to prevail. EDGE: DODGERS

Grit:

Hands down, Phillies. While the Dodgers were all business against the Cardinals, the Fightin' Phils earned their nickname in the Rockies series. That intangible called heart is the one thing that can keep the Phillies alive if the games come down to the late innings. As good as the Dodgers bullpen is, the defending World Champions find ways to win ball games when the title is on the line. EDGE: PHILLIES

Environment:

Phillies fans are known for their no-nonsense passion but Dodgers fans of today are not the sushi-eating dilletantes of years past. Dodgers baseball is a WAY OF LIFE to today's fans. With no football team, Los Angelenos have nothing other to distract them from their mission to make the Phillies players as miserable as possible when in Chavez Ravine. Considering the bean-ball war of 2008, both fans will be trying to give their team the edge. As the Dodgers have home field advantage- EDGE: DODGERS

In my opinion, these teams are evenly matched with unique strengths. The secret to the Dodgers success will be to keep the Phillies early-inning run production down while building up leads to take to the late innings. Consequently, the Phillies will have to get to the Dodgers pitching early and often. I expect the Phils to pull one late-inning victory out of their hats on pure heart which is why I predict:

Phillies in 7

LA’s Olvera Street.

The 2009 Haunted Harvest
Storytelling Festival marks a continuation of the partnership between We Tell Stories and the North Figueroa Association (NFA). NFA voting
members are property owners along the North Figueroa business corridor. NFA organizes and supports the
Old LA’s Farmers Market. Both non-profits are long-time residents of Northeast
L.A. who see community events as a way to enrich the cultural, social, and
economic prosperity of Highland Park and other communities in Northeast Los
Angeles.

We Tell Stories has entertained and educated more than four million
youngsters and performs at major art institutions such as the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, The Getty Center and the Getty Villa. The company was
shaken by the state’s economic downturn, which resulted in lay-offs and
decreased work hours. The
staff--Artistic Director, Diana Tanaka; Program Director, Susan Devlin;
Director of Education Programs, Joyce Lee; and Administrative Assistant, Jamie Hebert
remain hopeful. “We didn’t know if
we would have the festival this year, but we decided if we did not pull
together as co-producers, we would disappoint a lot of children,” says Joyce
Lee. Misty Iwatsu, the Executive Director of NFA was glad with their decision. She said, “The festival has become a
Halloween tradition for the entire community, it would be a shame not to have
it, and this year we expect to reach an even broader audience.”

You can tag that video with the term "Eagle Rock Music Festival 2009", and the TubePress software should automatically find your video and plug it into this website... http://eaglerockmusic.nelanews.net/

Please give it a try!!!

One of our associates is representing a buyer in a short sale where both a first and a second mortgage holder must approve the sale. The existing first and second mortgages are held by different banks, and as sometimes happens, the first and the second are completely out of sync with each other.

The listing agent completed a thorough, detailed short sale package and submitted it to both mortgage holders.

The first mortgage holder approved the package promptly. The second mortgage holder, Bank of America (need I say more?!), just didn't get around to it.

Bank of America procrastinated, and procrastinated, and by the time they finally got around to reviewing the file, the first mortgage holder said, "Oops, sorry, too long, we're closing our file, you guys will have to start over from square one."

Since, I suppose this is a fairly common problem, I'm wondering what strategies (if any!) other folks are using to keep two different short sale lenders in sync?

Our associate took a a "top-down" approach. Here is a portion of the letter she sent to B of A's VP Customer Advocate, Nancy Condos, and B of A's Chairman, Kenneth Lewis, in an effort to shake the trees:

Dear Chairman Lewis and Vice President Condos:

I am writing this letter to request your support on behalf of my Buyer - Buyer N.

Here is the timeline and dire circumstances that have lead me to ask for your immediate intervention.

Offer written on behalf of Buyer N. for $275,000 - July 21, 2009

Offer accepted; processed by Listing Realtor D. for submission to both lenders.

Negotiator of the first trust deed is HomeEc Mortgage Servicing.

September 16, 2009 HomeEc approves the short sale in writing.

Buyer N. and Selling Agent's team jump into immediate action; obtains full, doc-ready, loan approval within 5 days following September 16.

HomeEc's approval is subject to escrow closing by September 28, 2009.

As the September 28 date loomed, Listing Realtor D. makes every effort to be in constant contact with B of A negotiator. He is told that the written short sale approval necessary to order Buyer N.'s loan documents is forth coming "within 48 hours" - that commitment was made on and off for two weeks.

September 28 passed and HomeEc told Listing Realtor D. that the file was being closed and if/when the second mortgage holder (B of A) issued the written approval the short sale process with them would have to begin from step one.

On October 1, Listing Realtor D. spoke to the B of A negotiator, T. - who explained to Listing Realtor d. that the "process" was in phase two and she is allowed per B of A guidelines - 30 business days to issue a written approval/authorization.

During this entire process, Listing Realtor D. has emailed and left voice messages for Negotiator T., and her Supervisor, S.; Negotiator T. rarely returns calls or emails, and Supervisor S. has never returned a call or email.

The consequences of this mayhem are:

It has so permeated our culture and consciousness that photography is in danger of being trivialized and lost. Its ability and the ease in which it can reproduce realism leaves, the untrained viewer unable to discern between their own vision and the photographer's voice. In its early days photography was a science and tool for documentation. In 1902 all that changed when Alfred Stieglitz known historically as a photographer, gallerist and husband to Georgia O'keefe held the first photography exhibition for the Secessionists. This growing movement of European and American photographers decidedly took photography from a documentary way of perceiving the world to a more expressive and emotional medium.

In that tradition Urquiza presents his Polaroids. The images of landscapes and vignettes of a past life are reduced to three by three-inch windows into time. The southwest prints evoke an era long past while the objects and scenes of East Los Angeles recall childhood memories. The more recent images of the river itself still haunt our present day with questions of how time has changed little.

Please RSVP to Kathy Gallegos at Avenue 50 Studios.
ave50studio @ sbcglobal.net

"East of the River"
September 12-October 4, 2009

Avenue 50 Studio, Inc.
A 501(c)(3) non-profit art gallery
131 north avenue 50
323.258.1435

I spent a little time at Heritage Square Museum yesterday.

The docent brought up an interesting point. The Perry Mansion, (the white home on the left) built in 1876, cost considerably more to build than the Hale House, (on the right) built in 1887.

And contributing factors to that change in cost, were that in the intervening span of 11 years, huge progress was made in the ability to transport raw materials from one point to another cross country; and equally huge progress was made in the ability to mass-produce materials.

We often talk about the enormous, mind boggling changes in technology and business that have occured in the last ten years. I'm thinking the people living in the 1876 to 1887 period might have felt the same way.

Cantinflas Altar by Ofelia Esparza

Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present a fun and satirical exhibition for this year's Dia de Los Muertos. Once a year during harvest time, we pay homage to Death. At harvest, while crops die, they give back life. This is the spirit of Dia de Los Muertos ~ through death there is life.

Dia de Los Muertos is a pagan celebration to the Dead. We offer up candies and flowers and images to keep the Dead happy. This Dia de Los Muertos we've asked our artists to feed Death's belly with laughter. Through laughter, he will pardon and overlook our trespasses, and open a window to the underworld where we can communicate with our loved ones. Let us feed the demon Death with sweet life. And through those spoonfuls, keep the living alive. Let us laugh and celebrate life. This Dia de Los Muertos, we hope to keep you entertained in honor and celebration of the duality of life.
