Breguet’s Marine collection draws its inspiration from the original designs created by Breguet himself for the French Royal Navy after his 1815 appointment as Horologist to the French Navy.

Sturdy in design, Breguet Marine watches have for decades been reputed for their dependable performances. In 2004 Breguet launched a new interpretation of this product line, featuring a markedly more contemporary and sporty but ever elegant design. Following the launch in 2007 of the first tourbillon-equipped chronograph with silicon escapement, this year brings a groundbreaking new design: the Marine Royale alarm watch, water-resistant to 30 bar (300 m).

Breguet’s Marine Royale 5847 comes with an alarm devi ce that can only delight both amateur divers and aficionados of exceptional complications. Underwater tests confirm that sound travels better through water than through air. Sound waves require material support and their speed increases with the density of the environment. Sound travels about four times faster under than above water. Furthermore, as the underwater milieu is generally far less noisy than the aerial one, the alarm’s sound is perceived with greater clarity underwater.

The alarm setting crown and on-off pushpiece, in gold, are sheathed in rubber for easier handling, adding a further touch of sporty elegance. The watch naturally possesses the usual diver’s -watch features, not least a one – way rotating bezel and luminous markers. The bezel’s unidirectional rotation is secured by a blocking pawl, visible and located between the two winding crowns on the case flank. Shaped like a wave, it recalls the watch’s essential functions. To improve its legibility even in the murkiest waters, its minute markers and hand along with the hour hand are coated with white luminous superluminova while the alarm markers glow blue. Represented by a blue triangular pointer at 10 o’clock, the alarm’s power-reserve indicator is also luminous.

Rounding out its attributes, the Marine Royale 5847 possesses a date indicator and a self -winding mechanism. Two versions are available : white or pink gold cases, with an 18 kt gold dial with black rhodium finish. Both are manually engine-turned with the collection’s dedicated wave pattern.

Hennessey Performance Engineering (HPE) debut the company’s limited edition, Corvette ZR1-inspired, 2010 HPE700 LS9 Camaro on Tuesday, November 3 at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Powered by Hennessey’s tweaked LS9 engine, the supercharged HPE700 Camaro cranks out 725 bhp and a twisting 741 pound-feet of torque. 0-to-60 mph is achieved in a scant 3.5 seconds, with traction-limited quarter-mile times in the mid-to-low 11’s.

An all-around performer, the HPE700 LS9 Camaro is able to “whoa” just as well as it can go, with massive 15-inch Brembo brakes clamping down through 6-piston front calipers and 4-piston calipers in the rear. Ride quality and handling are also vastly improved with the addition of a KW Variant 3 coilover suspension and upgraded sway bars. Combined with Hennessey’s own lightweight 3-piece 20-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, the HPE700 Camaro is capable of generating over 1.01 g on a 200 ft. skidpad. Rounding out the package is the ZR1-inspired CarbonAero™ carbon fiber body upgrade consisting of a front splitter, side skirts and rear bumper with diffuser.

Production of the HPE700 is extremely limited with just 24 examples are slated for the 2010 model year. “This may become one of the most notable vehicles our company has ever built”, says company founder and president, John Hennessey. “Time will tell, but I would venture to say the 2010 HPE700 LS9 Camaro may go down in history as one of the most significant modern muscle cars ever created”.

Cost for the HPE700 LS9 Camaro – including the donor car itself – is $119,500. This also includes one day of driving instruction at Hennessey’s Lonestar Motorsports Park race track facility at no extra charge.

The Museum at FIT presents Night & Day, an exhibition examining how the rules that dictate appropriate dress for women have changed over the past 250 years. Featured will be more than 100 day and evening garments, textiles, and accessories, revealing the evolution of the rules that govern fashion.

Elizabeth Arden (Antonio Castillo), day ensemble, green plaid wool, black silk velvet, ivory silk chiffon, circa 1946, USA, gift of Doris Duke. Charles James, dinner suit, purple silk taffeta, black silk velvet, 1947, USA, gift of Beatrice Simpson.

Night & Day will open with two striking pairs of garments that represent evening and day attire from two different eras. Representing the 1920s will be an Art Deco-inspired sportswear ensemble juxtaposed with a heavily beaded evening dress. From the late 1940s, a jaunty Elizabeth Arden trouser ensemble for country weekends will be paired with a dramatic taffeta and velvet dinner suit by Charles James. The exhibition’s theme will be reinforced in the introductory gallery by a group of Christian Dior garments from the 1950s, a decade during which there were multiple categories of day and evening wear.

The chronologically organized exhibition will begin with the 18th century, when clothing was classified by its degree of formality and worn according to the occasion or activity. As the exhibition progresses from the 19th to 21st first centuries, day and evening clothes will be juxtaposed, illustrating what made each piece appropriate for a particular time of day.

Since the early 19th century, women’s clothing has primarily been divided into daywear and eveningwear, categories that are governed by specific dress codes. Early examples in Night & Day will include a white cotton day dress, circa 1815, paired with a silk evening gown, circa 1824. One of the distinguishing features of 1850s fashion was a full skirt. Dresses were divided into two pieces, a bodice and a skirt. It became common practice to have alternate day and evening bodices that could be paired with the same skirt, demonstrated by a chiné taffeta dress with two bodices, circa 1853.

The rules of dress reached their apex during the period from the turn of the 20th century until World War I when fashionable women were required to change their clothes up to six times per day, depending on their social obligations. After the war, fashion permitted a more relaxed set of guidelines. The buoyancy of 1920s nightlife will be represented by a champagne silk cocktail dress and a circa 1924 metallic lace evening dress by Jean Patou.

Christian Dior, evening dress, printed ivory silk satin, spring summer 1956, France, gift of Mrs. Michael Blankfort. Christian Dior New York, afternoon dress, sea green silk taffeta, circa 1952, France, gift of Mrs. Helen Ziegler

Some of fashion’s traditional dress codes temporarily collapsed during World War II, partially due to wartime restrictions, but also because women had fewer opportunities for social and leisure activities. However, the war affected fashion differently in France and the United States. This is most noticeable in the stark contrast between an unadorned linen day dress, circa 1945, by the French couturier Piguet, and a circa 1943 evening gown with dramatic beaded embellishment by the American designer Adrian.

Fashions of the 1950s again demanded a strict set of rules corresponding to a renewal of formal society. These would all but disappear in the 1960s and 1970s. Day and evening clothes were well defined in the1980s, even while undercurrents of the avant-garde and post-modernism led to a multiplicity of styles. The draped knits of avant-garde Japanese fashion, however, looked forward to the deconstructed silhouette of the 1990s, when standard dress codes were not embraced, as demonstrated by a Helmut Lang dress from 1993. True day suits, cocktail dresses, and evening gowns still exist, but contemporary fashion adheres to very few traditional rules and promotes loose definitions of daywear and eveningwear.

Night & Day, presented in the Fashion and Textile History Gallery, is organized by Molly Sorkin, along with Colleen Hill, Harumi Hotta, Lynn Weidner, and Tiffany Webber. The Fashion and Textile History Gallery presents biannual exhibitions examining aspects of the past 250 years of fashion. Exhibitions are curated exclusively from The Museum at FIT’s extensive collection. Support for this exhibition has been provided by the Couture Council.

The Museum at FIT is the only museum in New York City dedicated solely to the art of fashion. Best known for its innovative and award-winning exhibitions, described by Roberta Smith in The New York Times as “ravishing,” the museum has a collection of more than 50,000 garments and accessories dating from the eighteenth century to the present. Like other fashion museums, such as the Musée de la Mode, the Mode Museum and the Museo de la Moda, The Museum at FIT collects, conserves, documents, exhibits, and interprets fashion. The museum’s mission is to advance knowledge of fashion through exhibitions, publications, and public programs.

Rivoli Bar

But in 1972 it was transformed into a parade of shops. It re-opened in November 2001, The Rivoli was lavishly recreated by designer Tessa Kennedy in the more decorative and luxurious style of the late 1920’s rather than its early Art Deco original and is, once again, a fashionable and popular meeting place in London for an after dinner drink.

Upon entering the bar from the hotel’s Long Gallery, attention is immediately caught by the five gilded ceiling domes, each with their own delicate Lalique style chandelier. Windows overlooking Piccadilly stretch the length of the room and are dressed in voile, with each curtain pleat embroidered with Art Deco emblems in velvet and silk.

To the left of the entrance is the onyx marble bar which glows from lighting set both above and below. Glasses, bottles of spirits and liqueurs, silver cocktail shakers and Champagne buckets sparkle with brilliant reflections from the rear wall set in glass.

Recently described as ‘an Art deco jewel box’, The Rivoli is paneled in polished camphor wood veneer and decorated with golden keystone nuggets and magnificent Lalique glass panels. Four mirrors painted in gold and silver leaf in the style of the 1920’s Parisian artist Jean Dunard, cleverly reflect the light and are further enhanced by a gold leaf Art Deco ceiling.

Rivoli Bar

The walls at each end of the room are dominated by two large gold, copper and silver bas relief panels which were inspired by the famous Yugoslav sculptor Metrovil. Mohair sofas, high backed Palisander wood chairs and armchairs in ocelot velvet provide seating in the bar, while a polished bamboo floor covered in Art Deco rugs completes the overall design theme.

The Rivoli Bar, open daily offers an extensive choice of fine wines and Champagnes…ah yes, those Champagnes! The Rivoli Bar also offers many of the signature martinis and cocktails for which The Ritz is famous.

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is introducing a new top version of the Porsche Boxster, a light mid-engined roadster making its world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in December.

Weighing just 1,275 kg or 2,811 lb, the Boxster Spyder is the lightest model throughout the entire range of Porsche cars. Clearly recognisable right from the start, this new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the Porsche sports car – light, powerful, consistently open, and very efficient.

Click to an enlarge view

This is precisely the formula already applied in creating Porsche’s most successful road-going sports and racing cars, ranging from the legendary 550 Spyder all the way to the RS Spyder so successful in motorsport today.

The Boxster Spyder now continues this clear-cut philosophy with full homologation for the road, thus reflecting a common wish expressed by Porsche customers. The new model is entering the market in

February 2010 as the third version in the Boxster range, joining the Boxster and Boxster S.

The new member of the Boxster family stands out clearly at very first sight from the other versions of Porsche’s mid-engined roadster. Quite simply because the Boxster Spyder has been developed first and foremost for driving in the open air, the low-slung, light soft top extending far to the rear serving exclusively to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. When closed, the soft top, together with the extra-low side windows and the two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, boasts a stretched and sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

Significantly less weight than the Boxster S, a lower centre of gravity and an all-new sports suspension give the Boxster Spyder the right kind of driving dynamics clearly reflecting the unique look of the car.

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-litre six-cylinder with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 bhp, 10 bhp more than in the Boxster S.

Equipped with PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Again with optional PDK, fuel consumption is a mere 9.3 litres on 100 kilometres (equal to 30.4 mpg imp) in the NEDC New European Driving Cycle. Top speed, in turn, is 267 km/h or 166 mph – with the roof open.

In terms of its fundamental concept, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder built back in 1953, both models sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept, low weight, back-to-the-roots lifestyle, and supreme agility combined with equally outstanding driving pleasure.

Click to an enlarge view

The 550 Spyder was the first sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen developed specifically for racing but also homologated for the road. In the years following its production, this unique Spyder weighing only 550 kg or 1,213 lb, scored numerous victories on race circuits and in the road races so popular at the time.

The 550 Spyder was followed by other extremely successful Porsche Spyders such as the 718 RS 60 in 1960.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche dedicated a limited edition of special Boxsters bearing the additional name Spyder to these legendary racing cars. By contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, specially developed and upgraded production model with far-reaching modifications versus the Boxster and Boxster S.

Market introduction of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder will start worldwide in February 2010. The base price in the Euro countries is 53,100 Euro. Including 19 per cent VAT and national specifications, the market price of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder is 63,404 Euro.

The sensuous, serpentine curves of Riedel’s new lead crystal, mouth blown EVE decanter ($495) are not only seductive, but functional. This design tour de force double decants your wine as it flows through the coiled shape. Serving wine becomes a performance as the decanter’s twist and turns require the same movement by you—turning the decanter in a slow 360 degree rotation to ‘charge’ the decanter and allow the wine to pour. EVE is a decanter that also speaks—it emits a sound akin to the gurgle of the King Cobra as the wine makes its trip through the curvaceous swirl of glass. Eve’s long graceful neck means that you can easily pour for a guest across the table without moving from your spot.

Decanting young wines several hours before they are served gives the wine a chance to bloom and attain a stage of development that normally requires years of aging. The EVE decanter achieves these same results immediately, by allowing for the maximum effect of oxygen on the young tannins and aromas of the wine—liberating the aromas, intensifying the fruitiness of the mid-palate and rounding out the texture.

The EVE decanter, designed by Maximilian Riedel in 2008, is a tribute to the family’s matriarch, Eva Riedel. Each EVE decanter is free blown by a master glass blower in Austria and is a unique and functional work of art. Beautifully packaged in Riedel’s signature black and red box, the EVE decanter comes with an instructional DVD narrated by Maximilian Riedel, which demonstrates the pouring technique and cleaning instructions.

Inspired by the power and grace of the mythic Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640, TAG Heuer, the world leader in luxury sports watches and chronographs, has teamed up with the famous Italian super sports car manufacturer to create the limited-edition MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini communication instrument.

The MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini is hand-assembled and composed of more than 400 mechanical components, many derived from legendary TAG Heuer chronographs. Like the supercar, it handles beautifully, with such distinctive features as a dual-time display for discreet at-a-glance time monitoring and the TAG Heuer dual-function control switch to track incoming calls.

In tribute to the year Automobili Lamborghini was founded, only 1963 pieces of this finelytuned device will be sold worldwide. “Relentless in its pursuit of performance, TAG Heuer has revolutionized first timekeeping and now mobile communication by finding technological inspiration in professional motor sports and Grand Tourism cars,” said Steve Amstutz, General Manager for TAG Heuer Communication Instruments. “In partnering with Automobili Lamborghini, TAG Heuer reinforces its automotive legacy with the most extreme supersportscar of all.” Housed in black titanium carbide coated 316L stainless steel, the razor-sharp design of the MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini references the super sports car down to its famed signature on the battery cover – the same as on the Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640’s V12 engine block. The back of the device is engraved with its limited edition number while the minimalist black keyboard is customized with Automobili Lamborghini’s trademark Taurus bull on the steel central button.

The MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini is luxuriously crafted and detailed, marrying the most prestigious materials and advanced components in the watchmaking and automotive worlds. The display is made from 60.5 carats scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, combining exceptional light transmission with great stability in all thermodynamic conditions. Its battery life is unrivaled and offers a seven hours talk time or 28 days standby power.

Requiring three years of intense research and development, 700 prototypes, and the punishing quality control testing for which TAG Heuer and Lamborghini are famous, the MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini is an extraordinary communication device of bespoke digital engineering. It’s hot-wired with sound processes and chamber design fine-tuned for crystal clear acoustics. Special software enables customized Automobili Lamborghini screen animation and wallpaper. The ultra-sensitive antenna – twice as efficient as other radio standard-compliant products – ensures the MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini’s unbeatable connectivity where all other communication instruments fail.

“The MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini epitomizes TAG Heuer consistency in inspiring and framing its diversification, combining technology and design, and partnering with the best sports car Brands and engineers to come up with unique Masterpieces in all three fields we compete. We are very proud of this new partnership with such a great Brand as Lamborghini” added Jean-Christophe Babin, President & CEO of the TAG Heuer Group. TAG Heuer and Automobili Lamborghini: A Shared Passion for Precision and Performance.

The master of time to a formidable 1/10,000th of a second, TAG Heuer has merged timekeeping and motor-racing in a number of award-winning timepieces: From the original Monaco, the watch made famous by Steve McQueen in the 1970 race film classic “Le Mans,” to its groundbreaking new offspring, the just-launched Monaco V4 with its double-patented belt-driven movement inspired by the V-shaped cylinders in a high-end motor racing engine. Since 1963, Lamborghini has been the purest, most muscular expression of performance. Engineered for explosive power and spectacular speed and beauty, the super sports car is the singular vision of an Italian industrialist, Ferruccio Lamborghini. A true “gentleman driver” and long-time lover of the Gran Turismo automobile, Lamborghini was unsatisfied with every other car on the road. Therefore, he and his successors defied convention, creating the ultimate ride – one that is unlike any other car on the road.

“The MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini is the culmination of the high-performance, design-demanding and perfection-driven ethos that TAG Heuer and Automobili Lamborghini share,” noted Amstutz. “A communication instrument of uncompromised calibre and capabilities, it seriously upgrades the way the world connects.” The TAG Heuer MERIDIIST Automobili Lamborghini will be available in November at select retailers in watch and jewellery network, and select Automobili Lamborghini retailers.

The newly launched eBook Hong Kong Chinese Food Close Up is dedicated to make the food hunting job easier for visitors to Hong Kong.

The eBook lets readers peruse the book online, as if they were flipping through a printed directory of what kind of Chinese foods are available.

Dimsum Hagao and Shuimai, steamed served in bamboo basket, sake cups and chopsticks

“This has been a long time coming,” said Anna Yuen, Author of the new eBook. “There are plenty of websites on Hong Kong Chinese food but rarely written in English. An English eBook on the topic written by a native Chinese is even rare. It is our intention to provide a tool to make food hunting as easy as possible for visitors.”

With the new 60-page eBook, food lovers will look at the Chinese foods by category, with 3-4 close-up photos per page. “Price indication, Chinese food culture and suggested restaurant lists are included,” said Yuen, “all the food and restaurant reviews are unbiased and non-commercial. The 8 categories of Chinese food totaling 150 colorful photos will provide sufficient information for gourmets to fill their food diary for a Hong Kong trip up to 7 days.”

Anna Yuen, author of the new eBook had this to say:
“Eating has always been a major objective of travelers. Many spent hours on the internet to find out what and where to eat. Hong Kong Chinese Food Close Up is a handy guide for visitors to preview the foods, have an idea of how much to pay and where to eat. I encourage everyone to read this eBook before visiting Hong Kong.”

A custom fitted pencil skirt that can be paired with jackets, blouses, sweaters and is more flattering than the bulkier, looser fitting skirt. Band less pencil skirt which is a hot look for this fall creates a lean elegant look!

A definitive style element of a pencil skirt is the straight and narrow cut. For the ease of walking, the pencil skirt may have two, or single side, rear slits. Pencil style skirts may also be designed with a kick pleat to make the walking stride easier.

Of course, pencil skirts vary in length from year to year, but a pencil skirt that falls just around the knee is a classical and versatile addition to any closet!

At NELSON WADE®, we recommend fine elegant fabrics from our own fabric collection as well as fine distinctive fabrics from world renown fabric houses of Scabal®, Dormeuil®, Holland and Sherry® for custom fitted pencil skirts.

Bottlenotes’ wine tasting is inspired by the Bottlenotes Guide to Wine: Around the World in 80 Sips, and comes on the heels of its nationwide book tour. Their tastings, which feature wines from traditional and emerging wine regions including Argentina, California, Chile, China, France, Italy, Lebanon, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain and South Africa, have drawn large crowds in San Francisco, Chicago, Portland and Dallas. Bottlenotes Co-Founder Kim Donaldson is confidant in the local response, “New Yorkers are passionate about wine and food, and are always looking for new wines to try and new regions to explore. Around the World in 80 Sips™ offers that in a fun, informative setting without the formality often associated with wine tastings.”

A portion of ticket sales for the event benefits Robin Hood, a local non-profit organization which identifies and combats poverty at its roots, giving 100% of every donation directly to programs helping poor New Yorkers. Guests presenting a business card at the Robin Hood booth will be eligible to win a grand raffle prize of two round-trip jetBlue tickets to San Francisco for a weekend of exclusive wine tastings and a winemaker dinner in Napa. Whether looking for a fun night out or seeking new wines for the holidays, Around the World in 80 Sips™ promises fun, flavor and a flight to wine country for one lucky attendee.

Tickets are available at Bottlenotes.com/80Sips. ‘Early bird’ tickets are $50 (limited quantity), regular advanced tickets are $60 (available through 11/13 at 2:00p.m.) and tickets are $75 at the door. There is a VIP and press tasting from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., with an exclusive Champagne and sparkling wine tasting featuring Ayala Champagne, and includes a reserved seating area throughout the event. VIP tickets are $125. Doors open to general admission from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30p.m. All tickets will be issued at the door and require a photo I.D. Tickets are non-refundable, but transferable.
