While researching various blog and sites for great stationary recommendations, I had come across a small discovery: Pen enthusiasts, especially the fountain pen variety, are big fans of Rhodia brand notebooks.

Curious, I sought them out locally and found they seem to be in short supply here in Hawaii. I've only seen them at two shops and they seem to carry a very limited supply... and as much as I love grid-type and ruled books, I (personally) have a greater need for blank books. (I draw, afterall~ :D)

But then I came across a giveaway at Rhodia Drive for the brand new Rhodia "Webbie" and entered.

Lookie what arrived in the mail!

My thoughts?

[Update 2010.09.06] Giveaway closed for entries!

It's been about 6 years since I had last attended and BOY have things changed. It's the 2nd (or 3rd?) year at the Los Angeles Convention Center and that entire area has really developed over the past 6 years.
It's not much of a secret -- for some reason, I really like J-idol music. The cuter, the better? XD;

The latest <3? Watarirouka Hashiritai's "Akkanbe Bashi."

This is a sub-unit from the larger entity of AKB48 - which was originally 4 members, but recently expanded to 5.

Yes, it's a children's folk song and the accompanying dance is really cute.

In fact, the participants at the end of each dance cycle end with either a bow and a shrug or an "akkanbe" - a :P face and a pull of your lower eyelid - and a cheer... denoting their like or indifference to their partner. (BTW - "akkanbe" signals your like for your partner.)

Now, just how many American folk have heard of Eyeko?

I certainly wasn't familiar with it until recently, and it was thru a couple randomly found youtube reviews when looking for new lip balms/lip glosses to try. (Again, I love lip balms, glosses and treatments. I have quite the growing collection... If you have a glowing recommendation, please send it my way~ :D)

Upon first hearing the name, you'd think the brand was Japanese with some weird spelling... but in fact, it's a London-based company. The spelling is intentional, but if you check out their site, you'd know exactly whom their target audience is.

Like the Bonne Bell and Wet n' Wild, Eyeko is aimed at the younger teen crowd with cute and bright packaging and budget pricing. Most of the products are basic - eyeliners, mascaras, nail polishes, lip glosses, and creams. Also, most have a bit of shimmer to them.

Because the prices were so affordable and they had a free shipping offer, I jumped at the opportunity to try a few things out.

So I'll be detailing my haul behind the cut~

So, I've talked about my WOES with Photoshop previously in the main nemu*blog... In 2009, I had upgraded from Photoshop CS3 to CS4 with the hopes that some of those "shakes" problems would have been fixed.

In a way, they were~

One nice fix was the ability to rotate my canvas. I could also draw a line at *under* 50% zoom and it wouldn't show up all choppy and shaky. This was a definitely improvement over CS3 and I rejoiced.

And then I slowly came to realize a couple things:

1) My inking was taking longer for some strange reason.

Excerpt from #527

2) My inking wasn't improving... in fact, it was getting WORSE.

Detail of #527 - at 100% zoom (Click to see full-size)

But we've had some really awesome stuff come into the studio over the past few weeks that I just had to take some time to blog about!

First off, remember Anpan's Eat Pizza, Not Turkey campaign? Well, it seems we have a few fans who helped Anpan get the word out:

Thanks Thavia P. & Kaylie S.!

We also have a number of photos of the pups traveling to Ohio and Kentucky this past year with Jackie I!

Although Hobonichi Techo is a planner/notebook, it's part of a larger lifestyle company ... sort of in conjunction with game designer and essayist/journalist/blogger Shigesato Itoi. (Best known for the "Mother"/"Earthbound" RPG series.)

For those who know me best, I have a thing for stationary goods like this... but I'm extremely particular about what I'm looking for - especially when it comes to planners. Size, quality, layout of dates, pockets, durability, design... all important. The last time I had one I was happy with was maybe 6 years ago -- when I was living in Japan.

I'm sure you can see where this is going.

I feel sad. We're missing out on APE this year and it looks like it was a good show this time. Deb has been sending forth photos of some friends and new readers~ (Even Anpan made a super cute new friend! Photos courtesy of Deb Aoki~)

So what are we doing here in Hawaii? Last minute prep for a number of things... Upcoming t-shirts were just handed off to the printers for screening, my cousin's daughter had her second birthday party this weekend, Scott's finishing up a number of things for work that are (inconveniently) due at the end of the month, and I have a BUNCH of strips and other projects to finish ASAP so I'm not completely stressed out when we return at the end of October. Eeps.

(I get this face from Scott a lot... can you tell? XD;; I accidentally starved him this morning and bought him a green tea from Starbucks and flatbread pizza from Jamba Juice to tide him over.... ^^;)

So all errands need to be run this weekend. First thing this morning, we hit C2F for it's monthly "open house" sale. C2F is an art supply distributor to schools and other businesses around Hawaii and normally not open to the public. Buuut~ if you're in the know, they send out newsletters announcing their monthly sales and all the artists come out in droves to pick up their art necessities at a great price.

While I was looking for inks for my fountain pens (none found), I happened across these:

Pilot Parallel Pens!

They're calligraphy pens and have had consistently high recommendations from fellow pen addicts. ^^ I held off of buying them from in my last order from JetPens and I'm sort of glad I did...

They were $5.99 each. o_o!

So I bought all three~

I'll be giving them a test drive later this weekend if I have some time. I definitely need to work on my penmanship first though. ^^;

This seems to be a yearly thing now~

My mom used to work for the local tax office and would have me decorate things for her during the holiday season. I remember helping her make masks, christmas tree displays, food presentations, cookies, etc.

Funny thing is, Scott's mom is also an employee there. (Different departments, but our moms were familiar with each other, prior to *our* meeting.)

For the past few years, I've been helping her out with the pumpkin decorations.

This is Miss Punkin 2008.

So I had to think of something different for 2009...

While doing a little evening shopping at Ala Moana Center post-interview with a student, I stopped into Sephora to pick up a couple necessities.

1) Lancome's Bi Facil Dual-Action Eye Make-up remover - I found the cheaper Sephora brand stings... quite a bit, actually. I've only heard rave reviews about this stuff, so I picked up a bottle. (Dang, it's expensive. X_X;; But, it does work well and is easy on the eyes - even with contacts in.)

2) Amazing Cosmetics Concealer - small tube of Medium Beige - I have dark circles and visible bags under my eyes. Glasses usually hide them, but since I've been wearing my contacts more and more often (especially in this heat), I find I need the coverage. It's the one thing I don't mind splurging on since I don't wear much makeup to begin with.

Or so I thought.

Turns out that I got a BOX of Medium Beige... but a TUBE of Light Golden.

Huh? How'd that happen?

I'm not much a shopper, so I'm none-too-thrilled to have to go back to Ala Moana tomorrow to get this exchanged. :\

Gah.

I love art supplies.

I have a tendency to collect them in droves.

Keyword here: collect.

Although I try to use them whenever I can, I've turned into a digital world kinda gal. ^^;

Like most kids, it started off with a set of Crayola Colored Pencils we needed to buy for school. (You know, those super hard, waxy, inexpensive ones? The ones you had to scrub and scrub to get color out and would more likely dent the paper you're coloring than make a mark?) I had my small collection of wooden pencils from Sanrio with matching mini erasers like most other girls my age.

(I actually remember playing Uno and betting with those erasers... I can't say I was a great player back then. ^^;)

Then when I started getting into art, my mom bought a Strathmore sketchbook and big metal box of Prismacolors from a small art shop downtown for what I think was either my birthday or Christmas present.

Well, in short, I got a taste for the better stuff... and it sort of went downhill from there.

I started collecting erasers, pencil sharpeners, mechanical pencils and a variety of leads, blue Col-erase pencils, sketchbooks, paper... the list goes on and on.

Recently, I started my small collection of disposable brush pens and fountain pens, mostly from my favorite online pen shop, JetPens. ^^;

But the one thing I've been aspiring to all these years?

A full collection of Copic markers.

(This is my collection + Scott's pens as of today...)

I first learned about them from artist friends I used to game with in my high school and early college years. I was doing all my artwork in colored pencils and they suggest I try using the colorless blender to get a more smooth, painterly effect.

Then I started picking up the colors and it was like Fritos: You can't just get one.

For a while, Copics used to be my main art tool... and in order to get those nice gradients, I needed to buy more and more colors. I bought them in singles at first, mostly earth/skin tones for hair and skin -- coloring everything else with colored pencils... then when I got my first decent job, I bought one of the 72 color Sketch marker sets. Then purchased the rest in singles. In Japan, I bought all of the Ciao sets available and a few coveted Comic Marker styles (limited colors, but they have a brush point and a rounded point -- not available outside Japan).

Then when Scott and I got married, I inherited his 2 sets that he bought in HIGH SCHOOL... Yes, most of those markers have lasted well over 20 years.

A good investment? I think so. :D

While on my early lunch break, I decided to pick up a couple balls of yarn that have been sitting aside my desk for the past few months and start a scarf while listening to the Big Illustration Party Time podcast featuring Mai Kemble.

(By the way, for anyone interested in entering the grand world of children's book illustration, this is an excellent podcast to listen to! I learned a ton of new stuff!)

Knitting is sort of like a small meditation for me... however, I have one stitch type I do - odd number of cast ons, Knit, purl, knit, purl, knit, flip over and knit, purl, etc. It's a simple enough pattern for me so I can pick up and put down without being confused about where I am in the process.

I like the bumpy, knotted texture and it hides all my mistakes nicely. ^_^;

I first learned the basic basics from my mom and Canadian roommate in 2002 when I was living in Japan, surrounded by really awesome yarn and textile shops. My first attempts... I think I dismantled them. They were pretty horrible. ^^;

So all my current scarves look like these. XD

It's still too hot to wear them here in Hawaii...probably won't cool for another couple months... but I will have a chance to wear them later this month on our trip! :D Yay!

The one thing about living on a budget is keeping track of the state of veggies and other perishables in the fridge.

So this week is about soups and stews.

I had some leftover carrots from last week's chili recipe and picked up some extra onions to last us through the week. Perfect for another batch of lentil soup!

The recipe is something I found in one of the Cook's Illustrated compilations. It was one of the first recipes I tried in that particular magazine and a personal favorite ever since.

First, 3 strips of bacon are sliced up and thrown into the pot - medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes until slightly crispy. Then goes in 1 large onion and 2 medium carrots, chopped.

Once softened, I add in 3 garlic cloves, minced, 1 can of diced tomatoes (drained), some salt, pepper, 1 bay leaf, and 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme.

I usually use dried thyme, but this time (ha!) I had some fresh sprigs on hand.

Then I add in the dried lentils -- previously washed and checked through~

I let it steam (covered) for about 10 minutes so the lentils become soft and slightly darkened.

Then I add 4 1/2 cups of chicken broth, 1 1/2 cups of water, and 1/2 cup of dry white wine. (Recipe says wine goes in first, then heat goes up to high, simmer and add the rest of the liquids.) When it starts to boil, cover partially and lower temp to low.

Peek-a-boo!

The final step is to take out the bay leaf and puree about 3 cups of the soup in the blender. This gives the soup a thicker texture, less brothy.

After that, since it's going to sit for a while before dinner, I dump it in the slow cooker, turn it on low to keep it hot. The recipe at this point has 2 major variations. One version adds balsamic vinegar. The other version adds 1 teaspoon each of ground cinnamon, cumin, coriander, and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. I also add the juice of about 1 lemon and some garlic powder. I prefer the second version -- as it has a nice ethnic flavor and kick from the pepper powder.

You can finish it off with parsley/cilantro -- but Scott and I are not really fans of the stuff.

As for the rolls, I'm still working on them.

They're Pioneer Woman's Rosemary-Onion Rolls (sans blue cheese -- because it's expensive and I have no other recipes in mind for it.)

Basically, butter in a pan, slice onions, mince garlic, caramelize the onions.

Mix warm water + yeast, sugar, olive oil in one bowl and bread flour and salt in another. Add chopped fresh rosemary, add the cooled onions, add the liquids and mix.

Kneed bread a few times and place in oiled bowl. Flip to coat and this is what I have:

Now... it's supposed to rise, yes?

Recipe suggests 2 hours. Mine has risen to the edge of the bowl in less than an hour. o_O;?!

Since I'm by no means a baker, I have no idea just what's going on here. I won't be baking them for another hour or so... so you'll have to wait until later for an update. ^^;

Update: @leyliagray on Twitter suggested I punch the air out and that quickly solved the problem~ XD
