Leon Gregorian, Music Director of New England Music Camp, has announced the appointment of Dr. David Scimonelli of Bloomington, Indiana to the 2013 summer percussion faculty. Dr. Theresa Dimond, from Los Angeles, California, has resigned from the position for personal reasons. David Scimonelli is a freelance percussionist and music educator. A versatile musician; he is at home performing on the stage of classical concert halls and behind the drumset in venues ranging from jazz and popular music clubs to musical theater productions. He is currently a Section Percussionist with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Bloomington Camerata Orchestra, Bloomington Pops Orchestra, Indiana University Summer Festival Orchestra and the Bloomington Chamber Singers. Dr. Scimonelli earned his Doctor of Music and Master of Music degrees in percussion from Indiana University. During his studies, he was a Winner of the 2004 I.U. Jacobs School of Music Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist with the Indiana University Orchestra. His percussion teachers at I.U. included John Tafoya, Kevin Bobo, Anthony Cirone, Gerald Carlyss, Steve Houghton and Michael Spiro. Dr. Scimonelli earned a BM in music education from the University of Dayton, where his teachers included Jane Varella, James Latten, and Jim Leslie. Outside of the classical realm, Dr. Scimonelli has recorded and performed with various jazz and fusion groups on drumset. He has also performed on drumset and percussion in many musical theater productions. In the summer of 2004 he ...

I love my job with New England Music Camp. Around about this time of year I always start to get more and more excited, anticipating the coming season. It’s literally the same feeling I had as a camper in the 1980′s at the ages of 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. I love camp and I love to talk about it and share my experiences with both kids and parents. There are always lots of questions and I never tire of answering them. We often speak to groups in schools and youth orchestras about NEMC and the value of a summer at camp, and in recent years the one question we always hear is, “How much does it cost?”. I remember being asked that question the very first time I spoke to a middle school orchestra two years ago. It took me off guard and was a question I expected from a parent, not a kid, but I realize now that our children are effected just as deeply by our current economic environment as we are. Our children are aware of the struggles many of us endure as we worry about job security and income. I’ve begun to see it in my own children and as my eldest turns 13 he has begun to talk about how he’ll afford college, looking at scholarship friendly sports and instruments, and most shockingly, ways he can contribute to savings around the house. This makes me feel proud and secure in the fact that ...
