A friend and I were discussing classic cartoon characters, such as Tom and Jerry and Woody Woodpecker, around the water cooler. We discussed why many cartoons from the golden age of animation were more adult than childish. We also discussed why characters like Woody Woodpecker changed from crazy to responsible adult throughout the years. There are many reasons why the pre-World War II characters and cartoons changed over the years.

Most people are aware that cartoons in the 1930s, 40s, and even 50s were more adult in nature. Characters drank, smoked, and worried about taxes. For example, I remember a Woody Woodpecker cartoon in which Buzz Buzzard was determined to sign Woody up for a life insurance policy. But, Buzz was going to make himself the beneficiary, knock Woody off and keep the insurance money. Pretty heavy stuff. Let's dive into why cartoons were more adult like in this example.

First off, cartoons were more adult back in the golden age of animation because cartoons used to be shown before theatrical movies. Many of us Generation Xers and those who have come after us are used to seeing cartoons on television. Yes, the post-World War II cartoon characters were different from how they were before the war and for good reason. The first real political cartoons were drawn back in the early 1500's in Germany during Martin Luther's campaign against the excesses of the all-powerful Catholic Church. During this time of upheaval, Martin was looking for a way to use the new printing press to get his message out to the masses. Unfortunately, the "masses" were largely illiterate peasants who had previously relied entirely on Catholic Clergy for all access to the written word. Since the message Luther sought to distribute was inherently against the Church, he knew he needed a different way to reach the common people. The political cartoon was born.

Looking less like our modern cartoons and more like detailed illustrations, these early cartoons made use of familiar characters and stories to appeal to the peasants in a way that they could easily understand. One of these early cartoons shows the scene where Jesus throws the peddlers and hawkers out of the temple, a Bible story that all onlookers would easily recognize. Opposite the Bible scene is another which shows the Pope writing out and selling indulgences to the people. The comparison of the Pope to the hawkers is unmistakable. In this way, Martin could expose people of all classes to his radical and complex ideas in a way that was both simple and entertaining.

Youtube can be a very naughty thing, especially when you have a ton of things to do. Last night my long-suffering girlfriend and I, both of us with projects to work on, spent a total of three hours watching intro pieces to 80s cartoons. (Yeah, I hear you all singing "Children of the sun..." right now) It does seem that the recent resurgence of interest in all things 80s has been caused by an abject lack of anything new and memorable in years.

Practice! I'm going to be honest, your first cartoon will more than likely not be your greatest work. Like anything, this process takes time and lots of practice. Research never hurt either. The Internet is a vast resource full of articles, examples and video tutorials for you to learn from. Once your first cartoon is in the can, keep going! Start writing scripts for your next cartoons, practice your drawing skills, continue to seek input from others and keep pushing

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words! How true! - but what of a cartoon? Can an over-simplified visual representation really compete with the mighty pen (or for that matter, with the sword)! I hope to convince you that a skilled cartoonist can, with a few pencil strokes, outdo the cleverest writer or most talented poet in getting his ideas planted directly into the psyche, where they will generate an immediate emotional response to the material he chooses to put before his audience.

There can be no arguing but that Language and Text is the glue that holds civilization together. Words engage the intellect and walk the conscious mind along diverse paths that can certainly raise strong, even fierce, emotional responses to a writer's narrative, description or characterization. But to arouse these passions, the writer must first make an acceptable introduction and expend a few of his precious words as a "narrative hook" to catch the undivided attention of his reader. Possibly he does this with a headline or a clever heading - but he still needs to lead his "junior partner" some distance along with his honeyed words, before emotions and sympathy for his point of view can be fully aroused and be made ready to accept the challenge of participating with the writer on the journey he is proposing. But ever since the Napoleonic wars, political cartoons have easily achieved what whole armies could never do. We have seen that they can influence ideas and even change thinking patterns. In the past, cartoons have been incredibly successful in helping to turn public opinion against tyrannical regimes and dictators, although in the wrong hands, they have also been deliberately used to provoke genocide and other crimes.

How does a successful writer or poet create an emotional response ? There are five simple answers - sight, sound, feel, taste and smell. The human senses are the gateways to the passions and emotions. The writer and the poet rely, more than they can possibly imagine, on our five god-given senses to create the appropriate responses from their readers. Why do you think such sense related words as "imaginative", "evocative" and even "sensational" are so often banded about when a book or play evokes a really powerful emotional response? The writer uses his own "imagination" to create "images" in the perception of the reader. Need I say more? However it must be obvious that a great artist or a good cartoonist can always engage the senses and hence the emotions of the reader (viewer?) far more directly and quickly, by simply passing over an actual image, rather than an imagined one.

Visualization is the most powerful tool in the writer's arsenal and often many hours are spent in the careful selection of just the right words to simply "illustrate" for us what a good photograph or painting would convey in a flash. Why is this? It is simply because the rugged, unlettered, cave man is still the father of us all. To survive in his dangerous world, our forefather often needed to take in a situation instantly and then react appropriately (without thinking) to the emotion that his various senses triggered within his brain. To his alert mind the sight or smell of a tiger would symbolise - "man-eater" and therefore provoke the emotion -"fear", followed instantly by the response - "flight". On the other hand a glimpse of a deer would symbolize - "supper" and release thoughts of "hunger" - therefore the response - "stealth". The result, survival!

These fundamental types of automatic emotional response to certain visual and other stimuli were studied in depth by the psychiatrist, Carl Jung, in the early 20th century. From this study was developed a theory of universal "archetypes", which are symbolic representations of common personifications, roles or situations. These archetypes are instantly recognized as something familiar by the entire human race and always provoke a similar emotion or reaction from everyone, irrespective of race or culture. Actually Jung was not the first as Plato the Ancient Greek philosopher had already said very much the same thing some twenty-three centuries earlier.

In effect, we are talking about a biological imperative that manifests as an automatic emotional response to sensual stimuli, whenever archetypal symbols are recognized. The corollary of all this knowledge, is that it can easily be used as a psychological tool for manipulating people by generating a predictable response to selected symbolism. Propagandists know this well - as do modern advertisers. The cartoonist may not know anything about Jung and archetypes, but he will instinctively use all this inherited knowledge to its best advantage and in his work, he will employ the strongest of the five senses - sight. However he puts out only selected visual material in front of his reader (viewer?) and does this in a very direct, minimalistic fashion, by only pencilling in the absolute essentials of the idea he wishes to convey. What he is actually doing (in Jung's terms) is stripping down his available material to its bare essentials to facilitate its identification with an archetype. If he is good at his art, he will immediately provoke the exact response he wants - anger; fear, affection, partisanship, disgust or whatever. The predictable effect on our passions shouldn't be surprising - after all, we are hardwired to respond so.

The emotional reaction to a cartoon is often accompanied by uncontrolled laughter or mirth. This is simply the result of our conditioning, because we subconsciously recognise the absolute appropriateness of the portrayal by the cartoonist of an archetypal figure or situation that many thousands of years of evolution have been preparing us for. Moreover it always seems even more familiar, because the archetype has been adapted to fit into a current situation. A caricature of a well known personage, which overemphasizes any prominent physical features and makes more subtle archetypal references to other attributes of the victim, is a classic example of using selected symbolism to gain the full attention of the reader. Most importantly, the use of archetypes will ensure that a well crafted cartoon will usually leave a much longer lasting impression in the mind of the reader (viewer?), than the words of any specific text. Sometimes the cartoonist may cheat and add in a few words or labels, here and there, to make absolutely clear just what he wants you to take cognizance of - but this is usually not essential - though some such reference is commonly attached for form's sake.

Cartoons are an effective device for advertising because they are colorful and popular. Since they are entertaining they tend to leave prospects in a happy, receptive mood. Here are some ideas on how you can effectively use cartoons for your ad campaigns.

Newspaper advertising - Years ago when I started out as a cartoonist I read a survey which revealed that, among newspaper readers, 91 percent read the comics whereas only 65 percent read the sports and 27 percent read the news. This was years ago and the statistics may have changed somewhat but it does reveal how popular cartoons are for newspaper readers. Considering this an advertiser might do well to create a series of ads in a cartoon format. Years ago, for example, one of the loan companies in my home town came up with a cartoon series called "The Loan Arranger", a takeoff on the popular comic character, The Lone Ranger. It was a single panel cartoon that appeared frequently and each episode promoted the services of this loan company. Newspapers carry so many ads, this is one way for an advertiser to make sure his ad stands out in the crowd.

Direct mail advertising - I recently received a direct mail ad from the publishers of the Saturday Evening Post. The ad was to promote new subscriptions to their magazine. On the outside of the envelope they published a cartoon, much like the ones you see in their magazine. I often throw my junk mail away without even opening it, but the cartoon enticed me to open the envelope and read the advertising. Other advertisers could do the same thing to entice more attention to their direct mail pieces. A cartoon on a flyer handout would also be an effective way of getting people to read the flyers.

Store displays - I remember reading some time back about a shoe store owner who had cartoons blown up and displayed them in his store window nestled between the shoes he had on display. People would stop and look at the cartoons in the window, and then notice the shoes that were on sale. Here again is a creative way of using cartoons to attract attention to an advertising message.

These are just some of the advertising tricks I've seen used during my 40 years as a cartoonist. Next time you start to plan your ad campaigns, you may want to consider this type of art in your planning. Cartoons are generally no more expensive than any other type of photos or artwork you may choose and there are many cartoonists who will create custom work for you and you can find them with a quick search on the internet. Or, if you want to save money, you can often license cartoons from a cartoonist's stock inventory, which will fit nicely into your advertising message. Either way you have a fun and effective device for getting your message to prospective buyers.

Both children and adults like cartoons, though grown ups might be a little more hesitant to admit to their fan status. Now there are cartoons for adults and kids, though the content differs quite dramatically. There are entire channels dedicated solely to cartoons, and kids networks are full of their own cartoon rich programming. Whether a child or just a kid at heart, satellite tv brings people all of their favorite cartoon action.

While there are a lot of cartoon television shows out there, some are quite notably better than others. Of the top five cartoon shows for children on television the number one position belongs to "SpongeBob SquarePants". This show has a huge following all over the world, drawing in fans of all ages. The adventures of SpongeBob and his underwater friends keep people coming back for more, making the show the most popular program on Nickelodeon. Kids can laugh and sing along to some of SpongeBob's many songs and watch the delightful animation in high definition.

The second show on the list is "Dora the Explorer". One of the best things about this show is that it incorporates learning a different language while the children are being entertained. Having a bilingual main character is an excellent idea because the little lessons and words she is teaching the child audience while she is on her adventures, plant very valuable seeds of knowledge in kids without them even being aware of the fact that they are learning. Third on the list is "Looney Tunes". This is a classic show that has touched generations of people, making them fans for life. The clever characters and storylines make for excellent television, especially for children. Satellite TV helps people stay up to date with Bugs Bunny and all his friends.

The fourth show on the list is "The Simpsons". While this show is hugely popular with adults, children can relate to the antics of Bart and the general woes of going to school and having embarrassing parents. People can faithfully watch and enjoy this show from the time they are a child all the way up until their entire adulthood. The final show on the list of the top five cartoon shows for kids is "Bob the Builder". This is a wonderful show because it really tries to teach kids about cooperation and working together to achieve something as well as overcome and hardships that might result along the way. These are useful lessons for everything from school projects to sports.

Cartoons are a wonderful way to engage participants, add humor, and provide a unique and colorful visual perspective on content that may make it easier to retain.

I have used cartoons in my training programs for thirty years. We know that people learn better and are more creative when they are relaxed and in a humorous mood. Cartoons can take the bite out of very serious topics, such as discrimination and sexual harassment. They can provide some humorous distance to topics that may be too close for comfort, such as self-esteem and mortality. They can sometimes cut to the quick, speaking a truth that might be distressing without the cloak of humor.

In each situation, the cartoon makes it possible to discuss personal matters without making the participants feel that they are under personal attack and are being judged for their behavior or choices. We can laugh together, sometimes with tears in our eyes, as we acknowledge the reality of the message. The use of humor, and its universal inclusiveness, frees us to open up and be more honest with ourselves and others.

There appears to be a psychology to the use of cartoons, in so far as certain cartoonists are more acceptable to specific audiences. Cathy, by Cathy Guisewite, tends to appeal more to women. Dilbert, by Scott Adams, speaks directly to the experience of people in business, as well as men in particular.

The difference in the nature of the humor explains their different appeal. As Regina Barreca wrote in her book: They Used to Call Me Snow White, But I Drifted: Women's Strategic Use of Humor, more traditional women's humor tends to be directed at themselves, and more traditional men's humor tends to be directed at others.

A few cartoonists speak a language that is universal, insightful, and adaptable to many topics. I have found Snoopy, by Charles Shultz, Calvin and Hobbes, by Bill Watterson, LuAnn, by Greg Evans, and B.C., by Johnny Hart, to be premier resources.

Then, there are the more esoteric cartoonists often found in the New Yorker magazine, whose cartoons sometimes hit the mark and sometimes do not go over very well, particularly with Midwest audiences.

Since I became a national trainer in public forums, I have had to be very aware of copyright considerations. I quickly found that most cartoonists are represented by a syndicate, and there is typically a per-use fee.

It is possible to obtain the rights to use cartoons from the New Yorker for a moderate fee, or from the syndicates who handle Charles Shultz and Bill Watterson, for a much more hefty fee.

Then there are a very few cartoonists, such as Johnny Hart, who do not charge a fee as long as you acknowledge that the cartoon is used with the permission of their syndicate.

If you want to avoid paying a per-use fee, it is sometimes possible to purchase the rights to a number of cartoons by the same cartoonist. For example, prolific and wonderful cartoonist Randy Glasburgen sells a CD-ROM of 365 cartoons for a very modest fee, or the annual rights to his 1500 cartoons, plus daily cartoons, for a larger fee. The plus side is that you have continual access and permission to use the cartoons for almost any purpose.

Then, of course, there are cartoons available on the web for free. I have not found any that really appeal to me or would be appropriate for my audiences, but that is not to say they do not exist. And, if you are creative or have a creative family member or friend, you can always draw your own- or hire someone to draw them for you.

Whether you use them on overheads, in participant materials, or in PowerPoint presentations, and whether they are in color or in black and white, cartoons can be a very effective way to stimulate thinking, promote discussion, or introduce or summarize key points.
