 Perhaps importing doctors educated in places other than American universities is appealing. Some rather unique treatments will enter the medical system and rare elixirs into the formulary.

These ophthalmologists will be working at John Hopkins performing cataract surgery and retinal reattachment.

You tell me why anyone would put seven years into study after college to be told how much they’ll make and what field they’ll work.

American trained doctors will be sweating  street elbows into pressure lines, performing SAE certified part replacements, having nights and weekends off, NOT paying malpractice insurance premiums and playing golf too.

The Federal Bureau of Insurance Compliance Offices has this Logo on the door. You can’t miss it when you go to pay your fine for not having the mandated amount of coverage.

To ease the invasive largess of the ever providing government, Harry Reid is lubricating the passage of the bill.

The $100 Million Health Care Vote?

What does it take to get a wavering senator to vote for health care reform?

Here’s a case study.
On page 432 of the Reid bill, there is a section increasing federal Medicaid subsidies for “certain states recovering from a major disaster.”

The section spends two pages defining which “states” would qualify, saying, among other things, that it would be states that “during the preceding 7 fiscal years” have been declared a “major disaster area.”

I am told the section applies to exactly one state: Louisiana, the home of moderate Democrat Mary Landrieu, who has been playing hard to get on the health care bill.

 Senator Joe Lieberman isn’t playing along. Shame on you Joe, you won’t get your Caduceus and you are out of the club!

Société Générale tells clients how to prepare for potential ‘global collapse’

Société Générale has advised clients to be ready for a possible “global economic collapse” over the next two years, mapping a strategy of defensive investments to avoid wealth destruction.

The underlying debt burden is greater than it was after the Second World War, when nominal levels looked similar. Ageing populations will make it harder to erode debt through growth. “High public debt looks entirely unsustainable in the long run. We have almost reached a point of no return for government debt,” it said.

Inflating debt away might be seen by some governments as a lesser of evils.

If so, gold would go “up, and up, and up” as the only safe haven from fiat paper money. Private debt is also crippling. Even if the US savings rate stabilises at 7pc, and all of it is used to pay down debt, it will still take nine years for households to reduce debt/income ratios to the safe levels of the 1980s.

The bank said the current crisis displays “compelling similarities” with Japan during its Lost Decade (or two), with a big difference: Japan was able to stay afloat by exporting into a robust global economy and by letting the yen fall. It is not possible for half the world to pursue this strategy at the same time.

SocGen advises bears to sell the dollar and to “short” cyclical equities such as technology, auto, and travel to avoid being caught in the “inherent deflationary spiral”. Emerging markets would not be spared. Paradoxically, they are more leveraged to the US growth than Wall Street itself. Farm commodities would hold up well, led by sugar. [snip]

You realize this is musical chairs, short not one, but two chairs at the end; the person with the gold has no place to sit.

What does one do with the paper money one takes in exchange for the purchase of commodities? Remember it is constantly devaluing with an end result similar to “The Bottle Imp” by Stevenson.

As I mentioned, value and price are two different creatures. One cannot drink oil or eat gold. Foodstuffs become a strong currency. Has anyone tried growing corn in Manhattan lately? Where do these people get the buying power?

*Facepalm*  Was Eric Holder absent the day they taught law at Columbia Law School?  It’s mind-boggling to think he made this decison without examining previous case law.  Maybe the AG gave Dionne Warwick and the Psychic Friends Network a jingle for advice.  This is breathtakingly bad.

But wait, our Harvard Law educated president has a few things to add:

State records show Kraft and his wife, Myra, each gave the maximum $500 campaign contribution to Patrick and Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray last month. The Krafts also each gave the state Democratic Party the maximum $5,000 donation.

So, let’s see.  The Kraft’s donate $12,000, money they probably found in the couch cushions, and in return they gained an economic growth district and a $9 million bridge.  Now that’s what I call ROI.  But don’t worry because it’s all above board…Wink…Wink…Nudge…Nudge.  Nothing but Beacon Hill business as usual to see here.

More city kids are graduating from high school, but that doesn’t mean they can do college math.

Basic algebra involving fractions and decimals stumped a group of City University of New York freshmen – suggesting city schools aren’t preparing them, a CUNY report shows.

“These results are shocking,” said City College Prof. Stanley Ocken, who co-wrote the report on CUNY kids’ skills. “They show that a disturbing proportion of New York City high school graduates lack basic skills.”

During their first math class at one of CUNY’s four-year colleges, 90% of 200 students tested couldn’t solve a simple algebra problem, the report by the CUNY Council of Math Chairs found. Only a third could convert a fraction into a decimal. [snip]

“I just did this earlier. Now I forgot it again,” Jennifer Fortune, 18, who graduated from Brooklyn’s Edward R. Murrow High School, said when asked to answer one of the questions. “I was only required to take two years of math in high school, but I forgot a lot of it.”

John Jay College sophomore Ahmed Elshafaie, 19, who graduated from Long Island City High School, said he avoids math classes.

“I don’t want to ruin my GPA,” he said. “High school standards were really low.”

Of course in Vermont, everything is fine because Act 60/68 spends tax money faster than pirates on shore leave.

Why not test them with a test common to all schools, not some esoteric measurement of their butterfly energy and fear of CO2.

And give me a break with this “I have to make a careful decision” whine.  During the campaign, you called for a renewed focus on Afghanistan because it’s the “central front” in the war on terror.  You also claimed to have supported sending more troops since 2007:

“For at least a year now, I have called for two additional brigades, perhaps three,” he told CBS.

My, oh my, what a difference an election makes.  Today, you rejected all the options given thus far, and there’s general confusion about when/if you’ll ever make a decision.  I bet the Taliban can’t believe it’s good fortune with you as Commander-in-Chief.
