Orissa Violence

Orissa violence is unfortunate and I feel ashamed that this is happening in my Country. The killers of the Swami - a revered Hindu guru who was unarmed, who was working for the tribals of orissa for the past half century, who was targetted by evangelists for being a stumbling block in their conversion efforts should be brought to book. There is no doubt about that.

If the conspiracy theories about his murder is true - that is if the Church (Catholic or any other Church) was involved in the conspiracy to brutally murder the swami as he was blocking their efforts to convert the panas(a tribe in Orissa), then the Government should even ban the Church from Orissa, like what Mrs.Gandhi did in Arunachal Pradesh during late 60s. But, this brutal violence against the Christian community in Orissa should stop and Hindu leaders and organisations should ensure that this violence stops.

We aspire to become a super power and claim that we are already one. But, such incidents would pull India down and would make it more like the neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh where the writ of mob and religious extremists run from corner to corner. Innocent Christians should not be left to bear the brunt of backlash against mobs that basically want to avenge the inactivity of the authorities in tackling a brutal murder and incidents that preceded this murder (there have been 9 attempts on that swami so far).

This incident is utilised by Christian fundamentalists abroad to pour venom on Hindus in general. See the article below. The incident is despicable, ugly and I am ashamed of the behaviour of the mob; it reminds of the incidents in the erstwhile pakistan during the partition riots where hindus were forced to have sex with their sisters in full public view with the crowd shouting that the 'kafirs have no shame, kafirs have no morality, so they should do in public what they do in private'.

But see that the author again and again points out that ‘Hindus’ have done this. There is a fundamental difference in riots by muslims - they invariably arise from their scripture and sunnah of prophet mohammed, there is a religious philosophy behind islamic violence. However, here it is simple, brutal, mob fury. Missionaries and their apologists often claim that 'tribals' are not hindus and their 'religion' is different from the brahminical hinduism. But, when the tribals react violently, they are immediately branded as 'ugly hindus' and such incidents are used abroad to show India as a violent hindu country where missionaries are out to civilize the barbaric hindus who worship dark gods.

Basically what is happening in Orissa is more of tribals vs dalits clash. It is a mere coincidence that both these communities are on the side of two different religions. Throughout the Country, wherever daltis progress economically and socially, there is tension and ultimately violence erupts as other communities are unable to tolerate their progress. In Orissa, dalits in places like kandhamal are envied by tribal panas as the dalits are seen as benefitting from their new religion which bestows boons on them by way of foreign funds and the access to the vast resources of the Church in India (Church in India is the biggest single landowner and biggest provider of educational facilities at subsidised rates to the faithful). Part of the violence can be atributed to this aspect.

They raped a nun, wanted priest have sex with her

NEW DELHI (ICNS): Father Thomas Chellen tells how Hindu fanatics tortured him, raped a nun and paraded them both half naked through the streets, and wanted him to have sex with the nun in public.

The severely wounded priest spoke of his ordeal from his hospital bed in Bhubaneswar in Orissa. He told his story to the US-based Catholic News Service.

The 55-year-old priest said Hindu fanatics had poured kerosene on his head, “and one held a matchbox in his hands to light the fire. But thanks to divine providence, in the end, they did not do that. Otherwise, I would not have been there to tell this horror."

The director of the pastoral center at Konjamendi said in a telephone interview from the Catholic hospital. Following the Aug. 23 murder of a Hindu leader, Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, by Maoist extremists, Hindu mobs started attacking Christian centers in Kandhamal, the district where the slain leader was based.

When a Hindu mob of 500 people broke into the pastoral center around noon Aug. 24, Father Chellen said he fled through the backyard with another priest and a nun.

"It was heartbreaking for us to watch from a distance the entire complex go up in smoke," said Father Chellen, who had supervised the construction of the center that opened in 2001 and could accommodate 200 people.

"They vandalized everything and set it on fire. It has been reduced to ashes," he added.

As the three watched from a distance, some other priests told them to flee.

"We fled to the jungles and came in the night to take shelter in the house of a Hindu friend and spent the night there," Father Chellen said, adding that the second priest left them to join other priests.

The following morning, he said, the Hindu family moved the priest and nun to an adjacent vacant house and locked it to give the impression that no one was inside.

However, the Hindu mobs overheard the priest speaking on his cell phone, broke into the room and dragged him and the nun outside.

"They began our crucifixion parade," said Father Chellen. The gang of about 50 armed Hindus "beat us up and led us like culprits along the road" to the burned pastoral center.

"There they tore my shirt and started pulling off the clothes of the nun. When I protested, they beat me hard with iron rods. Later, they took the sister inside (and) raped her while they went on kicking and teasing me, forcing (me) to say vulgar words," said the priest who has cuts, bruises and swollen tissue all over his body and stitches on his face.

"Later both of us, half-naked, were taken to the street, and they ordered me to have sex with the nun in public, saying nuns and priests do it. As I refused, they went on beating me and dragged us to the nearby government office. Sadly, a dozen policemen were watching all this," he said.

Angry at his plea to the police for help, the mob beat the bleeding priest again.

Later, a government official and members of the mob took the priest and the nun to the police station, where Father Chellen said he was kicked in the face.

"The four-hour ordeal ended when a senior police officer arrived in the evening," said Father Chellen.

The priest said one of the most hurtful things about the incident was that some local Hindus whom he knew were watching the events and ignored his requests for help.

Later, the priest and nun were taken to a nearby police camp, he said. "They were very kind to us, gave us clothes and slippers," said Father Chellen.

On Aug. 26, the priest and the nun were taken for medical tests. That afternoon they were sent by bus to Bhubaneswar.

Father Chellen said he was admitted to the hospital Aug. 27, while the traumatized nun was taken to a convent. He said the plans called for him to be moved to Mumbai for treatment.

Asked about the how the nun coped with the trauma, Father Chellen said: "We had no option and were simply following their commands. We resisted as much as we could. This is like being tortured for Christ."

-பாதாளத்துக்குள் தள்ளப்பட்டோரிடமிருந்து இவ்வாறு பளிச்சென கேள்விகள் வந்து விழ
ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டன. பழையதுகளை பரிசீலிக்கத் திராணியற்றவர்களை இது போன்ற
கேள்விகள் பரிதாபமாய் ஆக்கிவிடுகின்றன. இந்தக் கேள்விகள் எடக்கு முடக்காய்
நம்மை மடக்குவது மட்டுமல்ல, நாம் காப்பாற்றி வந்த மதிப்பீடுகளையும் கேள்விக்கு
ஆளாக்குகிறதே என்ற கோபம், இயற்கையாய் அதிகார வன்முறைக்குக் கைநீள வைக்கிறது.

முட்டுச் சந்துகளே இல்லாத காற்றோட்ட வீதிகளை புதிய தலைமுறையினர் உருவாக்க
முயலுகிறார்கள். உடைக்கவே முடியாது என்று தோன்றிய முட்டுச் சந்துகளை அவர்கள்
உடைக்கிறார்கள், உடைக்கும் அவசியத்தைக் காலமும், எதிர்கொள்ளும் நிலைமைகளும்
உருவாக்கித் தருகின்றன. சுதந்திரத்தைச் சுவாசிக்க நினைக்கும் எவரும் இந்த
உடைப்பை அதனுடன் புதிய நிர்மாணத் தைத் வரவேற்கவே செய்வார்கள்.

மாற்றங்களை ஏற்றிடாதவர்கள் அறிவுக்கும், சிந்தனைக்கும் பரிணாமம் உண்டென்பதை உணர
மறுப்பவர் ஆகிறார்கள்.

அறிவின் பரிணாமம், சிந்தனையின் பரிணாமம், உண்டு பண்ணும் புதிய கருத்துகள்
விடுதலையைப் பேசுகின்றன. பழமைவாத எதிர்ப்பு, மூடநம்பிக்கை எதிர்ப்பு, சாதி, மத
எதிர்ப்பு, பெண் விடுதலை, ஒடுக்கப்பட்டோர் விடுதலை, மனித உரிமைகள் என இன்றைய
கால கட்டத்தில் மனிதனை விடுதலை செய்கிற கருத்தியல்கள் முன்னகர்த்தப்பட்டுள்ளன.
புதிய வெளிச்சம் பாய்ச்சுகின்றன. எல்லா மதங்களும் போலவே இஸ்லாமும் பெண்ணை
அடிமையாகப் பார்க்கும் இருட்டை எழுத்தாளர் தஸ்லிமா நஸ்ரின் உடைக்க முயல்கிறார்,
இஸ்லாமியத்துக்குள் பெண்ணை அடிமைப்படுத்தும் கோட்பாடுகளை, மதத் தலைமைகளை
எதிர்த்தார். அந்தக் கோட்பாடுகளை தமக்குச் சாதகமாக வளைத்துக் கொள்ளும் ஆண்கள்
மதச் சமூகம் என்ற பெயரில் எதிர்த்தார்கள். ஒன்றுக்கு மேற்பட்ட பெண்களை ஆண்கள்
மணந்து கொண்டது போல நானும் எனக்கு வசதி இருந்தால் பல ஆண்களை மணந்து
கொண்டிருப்பேன் என இஸ்லாமிய ஆண் ஆதிக்கத்தை எதிர்த்து, இது போன்ற கேள்விகளை
எழுப்பினார் தஸ்லிமா நஸ்ரின்.

அவரைக் கொலை செய்யும் முயற்சிகளை மதவெறியர்கள் தொடக்கினார்கள், பட்வாக்கள்
பிறப்பித்தார்கள், அவர் பிறந்த வங்கதேசத்திலேயே இது நடந்தது.
வங்கதேசத்திலிருந்து நாடு கடந்து இந்தியாவுக்குள் தஞ்சம் அடைந்தார்.

தஸ்லீமா நஸ்ரின் அடக்குமுறைக்கு ஆளாக்கப்பட்ட அந்தக் கால கட்டத்திலும் சரி, இப்
பொழுதும் சரி, பெண்களே வங்க தேசத்தில் ஆட்சித் தலைமையில் இருந்தனர்,
இருக்கின்றனர். மதத்தில் நிலவும் ஆண் அடக்குமுறைகளுக்கு எதிராக அவர்கள் ஒரு
வார்த்தை பேசியதில்லை, பேசியிருந்தால் மத உணர்வுகளைத் தூண்டிப் பாதுகாப்பாய்ச்
சுரண்டுகிற மதத் தலைமைகள் தூக்கியெறிந்திருக்கும். அப்படிப் பேசுவது அரச
பதவிகளின் அடிப்படையையே வேரறுக்கும் என்பது அவர்களுக்குத் தெரியும்.

தெலுங்கில் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்ட லஜ்ஜா என்ற தனது நூல் வெளியீட்டு நிகழ்வில்
ஹைதராபாத்தில் கலந்து கொண்ட தஸ்லிமா நஸ்ரின் - மஜ்லீஸ், ஹதுல் முஸ்லீம் என்ற
அமைப்பைச் சார்ந்தவர்களால் தாக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறார்.

மஜ்லீஸ் இதே ஹதுல் முஸ்லீம் அமைப்பின் தலைவர் சுல்தான் அலாவுதீன், சட்டமன்ற
உறுப்பினரான அவரது மகன் அபிருதீன், இன்னும் இரு சட்டமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள்
நேரடியாகவே தாக்கியுள்ளனர். மதவெறியாளர்களாய் இருப்பதில் சட்டமன்ற
உறுப்பினர்கள், நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள், அமைச்சர்கள் என்ற உயர்நிலை
அடையாளங்கள் பெரிதில்லை என்பதையே தாக்குதல் சொல்லுகிறது. காஷ்மீர் முதலமைச்சர்,
காங்கிரஸ் குலாம் நபி ஆசாத் இரண்டு பேருமே தவறு செய்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்று
கூச்சமில்லாமல் பேசியிருக்கிறார். மதவெறியர்களைக் கண்டித்திட வேண்டிய குரல்
பதவிகளைத் தக்கவைக்கும் தலைமைகளின் ஆதரவுக் குரலாய் வெளிப்பட்டிருக்கிறது,
தஸ்லீமா நஸ்ரின் மத உணர்வுகளைக் காயப்படுத்தலாமா என்று கேட்கிறார்கள். 'இந்து
மதத்துக்கு மூன்று எதிரிகள் சூலாயுதத்துக்கு மூன்று முனைகள்' என்று பகிரங்க
வன்முறை தூண்டிய பிரவீன் தொகாடியா கூட மத உணர்வுகளைக் காயப்படுத்துகிறார்கள்
என்றுதான் பேசுகிறார், பகுத்தறிவுக்கு எதிராக, பெண் விடுதலைக்கு எதிரானதாக
தஸ்லீமா நஸ்ரின் எதுவும் பேசவில்லை, காயப்படுத்துகிறது என்றால் நீங்கள் கண்
திறந்து பார்க்கத் தயாரில்லை என்று பொருள்.

எச்.ஜி.ரசூல் என்ற கவிஞர், அவருடைய ஒவ்வொரு கவிதையும் படிமங்களாய்ப்
பயணிக்கும், படிமங்களுக்குள் பயணித்தால் காட்சிகளாய் விரியும், காட்சிகள்
யதார்த்தங்களை விரித்துக் காட்டும், யதார்த்தங்கள் இஸ்லாமிய சமூகத்தின்
சிந்தனைப் போக்கு, மதத்தின் இருண்ட பக்கங்கள், வாழ்வு வகை, நாலாந்த
நடவடிக்கைகளுக்கு நடத்திச் செல்லும்.

மதச் சமூகத்தின் திரைகள் ஆயிரம்; தனித்த வாழ்வுமுறை, சடங்கு சம்பிரதாயம், பலதார
மண உறவு, பெண்ணடிமை எனும் ஒவ்வொரு திரையையும் அவருடைய ஒவ்வொரு கவிதையும்
உருவிக் கீழே எறிகிறது. அந்தச் சமூகத்தில் சரிபாதிக்கும் மேலாயிருக்கிற
பெண்களின் அடிமைநிலை, பெண்களை காற்பந்துகளாய் எத்தி ஆடும் ஆண்களின் ஆட்டம்,
பெண்ணெழுச்சி ஆகியவை பற்றிக் குறிப்பாக எழுதத்தொடங்கிய போது மதச் சமூகம்
வெட்டுக்கத்திகளைத் தூக்கிக் கொண்டு வந்தது,

வந்துதிக்காத ஓர் இனத்தின் நபி - என்ற கவிதை

-சாலமன் ருஷ்டியை விரட்டியது போல், பெண் விடுதலை எழுதிய தஸ்லீமா நஸ்ரினை
விரட்டியது போல், இந்தக் கவிதைக்காக எச்.ஜி. ரசூலை வேட்டையாடத் தொடங்கினார்கள்
கன்னியாகுமரி மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள தக்கலை நகர ஜமாத்துகள். இந்த ஒரு கவிதை
மட்டுமன்று. இது போன்ற பல கருத்து அம்புகள் அவரது அம்புறாத்துணியிலிருந்து
புறப்பட்டதற்காக இஸ்லாமிய சமூகத்திலிருந்து விலக்கப்பட்டவர் (காபிர்) என
அறிவிக்கப்படுகிறார் ஜமாத்துகளால். காபிர் என்றால், அவர் சார்ந்த
சமூகத்திலிருந்து மட்டுமன்று, அவர் இயங்கும் குடும்பத்துக்குள்ளிருந்தும்
விலக்கப்பட்டார். மனைவி, குழந்தைகளும் அவருடையவர்களல்லர். பலகாலம் முயற்சிகள்
செய்து, விளக்கம் தந்த அவரை - இஸ்லாமில் புதிதாய்ச் சேருகிறவர்களை கலீமா
சொல்லவைத்து எப்படிச் சேர்த்துக் கொள்வார்களோ, அது போல் கலிமா சொல்லச் செய்து
மீண்டும் சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளப்பட்டார். ஜமாத்துகள், அலீமாக்கள், உலமாக்கள்
கருத்துப்படி அவர் ஏற்கனவே முஸ்லீம் அல்லர், புதிதாக முஸ்லீம் ஆனவர்.

இப்போது மத அதிகாரத்தின் உச்சத்திற்குப் போய் ஆடுகிறார்கள். ஆறேழு ஆண்டுகளின்
பின் முந்திய அவரது கவிதைக்காக மட்டுமன்று - இப்போது வெளியான கட்டுரைகளுக்காக -
அவரை ஊர் விலக்கம், மத விலக்கம் செய்து தீர்ப்புரைத்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

நீதிமன்றம் போய் இடைக்காலத்தடை வாங்கி வருகிறார் ரசூல். நீதிமன்றத் தடை பற்றிய
அச்சமின்றி மதச்சபை விலக்கம் செய்தது செய்ததுதான் என்று நடைமுறைப் படுத்திக்
கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள்.

ஆகாயத்துக்குக் கீழே இருக்கிற எதைப்பற்றியும் விமர்சிக்கும் உரிமை உண்டு.
மார்க்கமோ விதி விலக்கன்று. சமூக விஞ்ஞான ஆய்வுகளின் அடிப்படையில் உருவானதென
நாம் நேசிக்கிற மார்க்சியமும் அப்பாற்பட்டதன்று. ஆனால் ஏதொன்றும் சமூக விஞ்ஞான
நோக்கில் அலசப் படவேண்டும் என்பதில் சிறு சந்தேகம் கூட இல்லை. ஒரு கதாசிரியனாய்
தான் வாழும் சமு தாயத்தின் மூடுண்ட வாழ்வை வெளிச்சத்தில் கொண்டு வந்து வைத்தவர்
எழுத்தாளர் தோப்பில் முகமது மீரான். அவருடைய முதல் நாவல் கடலோரக் கிராமத்தின்
கதைக்கு எதிர்ப்புக்களை வெளிப்படுத்திய மார்க்கவாதிகள் நாவலைத் தீக்கொளுத்தவும்
செய்தார்கள்.

மதத்தின் கட்டு திட்டுகளுக்கும், சட்ட திட்டங்களுக்கும் கட்டுப்படாமல் திமிறி
எழுந்தவர் இன்குலாப். இஸ்லாத்தின் வரையறைகள் இதுதான் எனப்
பட்டியலிடுவீர்களெனில், அந்த இஸ்லாத்துக்குள் நான் இல்லை என அறிவித்து,
வாழ்வில் நிகழ்த்திக் காட்டினார். 1980களில் தராசு, நக்கீரன் போன்ற இதழ்களில்
எழுதிய போது, அவரைப் பணியாற்றிய கல்லூரியிலிருந்து விரட்ட, எந்த ஆதாரத்தில்
நிற்கிறாரோ அந்த வாழ்விலிருந்து பிடுங்கி எறியும் முயற்சிகளும், உயிரோடு விட்டு
வைக்கமாட்டோம் என்ற மிரட்டல்களும் நடந்தன. ஒரு கோட்பாடு தவறானது என்பதை
அனுபவங்கள் உணர்த்துமானால் அதை உதறிவிட்டுச் செல்வதுதான்
பகுத்தறிவுப்பூர்வமானது என்கிறார் இன்குலாப்.

உலகம் இஸ்லாமியப் பயங்கரவாதத்தில் நடுங்கிக் கொண்டிருப்பதான ஒரு மாயையை
அமெரிக்கா போன்ற உலகப் பேரரசுகள் விதைத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றன. மார்க்க நடைமுறை
என்ற பெயரில் உள்ளூர்ப் பயங்கரவாதம் அதை உறுதி செய்துவிட வேண்டாம். சிறுபான்மை
இனமாய் ஏற்கனவே சிதைக்கப்பட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் இஸ்லாம் தனக்குள் உயர்த்திய
காவிக்கொடியை வீசி எறிய வேண்டாமா?

கடுமையாக எதிர்க்கிறோம். இஸ்லாத்தை விமர்சிக்கிறவர்கள் இஸ்லாமியப் பெயர்
தாங்கிகளாக இருந்தால் அவர்களைத் தூக்கிப்பிடிக்கிற போக்கு ஒரு சிலரிடம்
காணப்படுகிறது. இருப்பினும் ஹைதராபாத்தில் நடந்த தாக்குதல் சம்பவத்தை நாம்
ஏற்கவில்லை

இது குவைத் மட்டும்தான் என்றில்லை. தமிழ்நாட்டிலும், கேரளாவிலும் இந்த பழக்கம் இப்போது துவங்கியுள்ளது. சிறுவர்களை இப்படி இஸ்லாத்தை அறிந்துகொண்டு, முறையான இஸ்லாமியனாக வாழ்வதற்கு, 'கெட்டுப்போகாமல்' நல்ல பிள்ளையாய் வளர்வதற்கு வீட்டார் கேம்ப்களுக்கு அனுப்புகின்றனர்.

இச்சிறுவர்கள் சிறுவயதிலேயே ஜிஹாதி பாதைக்கு ப்ரெய்ன்வாஷ் செய்யப்படுகின்றார்கள். எனது குடும்ப நண்பர் ஒருவரின் பையன் போய்விட்டு வந்து இந்துக்கள் சாணியை கும்பிடுகிறார்கள், தின்கிறார்கள், பூசிக்கொள்கிறார்கள் (விபூதி) என்றெல்லாம் பேச, அவரது மனைவி அதிர்ந்துபோய் அதிலிருந்து இப்படிப்பட்ட மதப்போதனை எனது பிள்ளைகளுக்கு வேண்டாம் என்று பையனை அனுப்ப மறுத்துவிட்டார்.

In an article in the Kuwaiti daily Al-Jarida, columnist Fatima Dashti denounced how religious summer camps subject children to religious brainwashing, including jihadist indoctrination, out of sight of parents and the authorities.

Following are excerpts from the article, titled "Religious Summer Camps – Brainwashing, Not Entertainment."(1)

The Camps Aim to "Protect the Youths from Western Culture"

"'The Virtuous Youth Camp,' 'The Noble Aspiration Camp,' 'The Camp of the Fearless,' 'The Budding Youth Club,' 'The Young Generation Camp' – all these and others are names of summer camps that are constantly and prominently advertised in our papers, presenting their programs and competing for [the readers' attention].

"In their margins, many [of the ads] state 'limited space or 'a summer after your own heart' –proclamations aimed at encouraging the public to register. [Other ads] include assurances aimed at the devout religious [public], such as 'no mixing [of the genders].' For those too lazy to register their son or daughter, [some ads even] stress that 'a registration agent will come to your home.'

"The organizers of these camps make [every] effort to bring as many children and youths as possible to their camps. [To this end], they stress that the [program] includes 'English lessons' or 'Koran lessons.'

"But in practice, those who register are compelled [to participate] in intensive religion classes, taught using implausible traditions and stories that have no basis in history. Moreover, the only goal [of these lessons] is to frighten the youths or to 'protect them from Western culture.' This is evident from the testimony of a parent..."

A Camper Reports: "The Teacher at Camp [Said] that Allah Will Build a House in Paradise for Anyone who Goes to Afghanistan and Fights Those Who Oppose Islam"

"Bou 'Abd Al-Wahhab told us that last year he was busy and could not send his children to vacation abroad during the summer holidays. Therefore, he decided to register two of them for a summer camp advertised in one of the papers. The cost was negligible – 10 dinars for a whole month.

"[However,] Bou 'Abd Al-Wahhab was distressed when his nine-year-old son asked him [one day] about Afghanistan, and how far it was from Kuwait. When [the father] asked the reason for the questions, [the boy] replied: 'The teacher at camp said that Allah would build a house in Paradise for anyone who goes to Afghanistan and fights those who oppose Islam.'

"Bou 'Abd Al-Wahhab['s story] is genuine. He found it difficult to believe that what he heard from his son was part of a lesson given at the camp. Despite the denials of the teacher – who was an Arab – he insisted on taking his sons out of camp and refrained from registering them for another camp or club of the same sort.

"...Brainwashing means changing an individual's ideas, principles, beliefs and values... In his book The Mind Managers, [sociologist] Herbert I. Schiller states that 'the various methods of brainwashing work best on youths; while the brainwashing of adults is more difficult, because it takes more time. [Brainwashing] can be achieved through various proven methods, such as [arousing] psychological and physical sensations, [triggering] strong emotions, both painful and pleasurable; and using [various] techniques of stimulation, intimidation and mental persuasion. [Used] over a long period of time, [such techniques] cause most people to change their ideology, values and beliefs.'"

Unless the Government Regains Control of the Camps, "We May One Day Wake Up To the Worst Possible Scenario"

"What Schiller describes is exactly the goal of some of the religious summer camps... which operate behind closed doors, out of the sight of parents and the authorities. Al-Jarida tried to contact one of these camps by [calling] the number in its newspaper ad. When we asked about the nature of the camp, the [man] in charge was happy to tell us all about it. He said that the main goal of the camp was to make [good] use of the youngsters' free time and to keep them away from 'hazardous pitfalls.' He did not try to explain this term, but avoided the issue by inviting us to a [face-to-face meeting] to receive more information.

"What is happening behind the scenes in these summer camps should be a warning sign to the authorities to regain the role that they have abandoned, either deliberately or through neglect, and that they have left to this extremist faction. They must do what the families wish, and bring the summer camps back under the [authority of the] Education Ministry schools. [Otherwise,] we may one day wake up to the worst possible scenario."

Ms Saadawi has had death threats in the past

The trial of a leading Egyptian feminist accused of being a heretic against Islam - writer Nawal El-Saadawi - has been adjourned.

The court in Cairo said it would give its decision by the end of the month as to whether the case against her should be heard.

Dr Saadawi is being sued, under a special Islamic law, over a newspaper interview in which she is alleged to have said that the Muslim pilgrimage, or Hajj, had pagan roots.

The Cairo lawyer who brought the case against her is calling for the Egyptian courts to enforce her separation from her Muslim husband of 37 years, saying her remarks show that she has abandoned her religion.

In a similar case six years ago, a university professor - also accused of apostasy - had to flee the country to avoid divorcing his wife.

Surprise

The BBC's Middle East correspondent Frank Gardner says many people are surprised that this case has even got as far as going before a judge.

El-Saadawi says her statements were taken out of context

Nawal El-Saadawi's husband, Sharif Hatata, says he was stunned when he first heard of this lawsuit.

"Well, you know it was midway between a nightmare and a dream. I mean, it sounded absolutely unreal and ridiculous, but at the same time, for a little while it was frightening."

She has had death threats in the past. Her published views are considered far too radical for Egypt's conservative readers.

She was the first Arab woman to write against female genital mutilation, still practised in parts of Egypt.

Inheritance law

Now, she has upset Islamic extremists by questioning the Muslim law of inheritance.

"I said we have to rethink about the inheritance law because we have 30% of families in Egypt where the mother is working and paying for the family and the husband is not working," she said.

And she added: "It is the mother who is the provider for the family, so why women inherit only half?"

Nawal El-Saadawi has tackled other sacred subjects too. In a recent newspaper interview, she said the veil was not Islamic, it was worn by Jewish and Christian women.

But what has really enraged some people in Egypt is her assertion that the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca has pagan origins.

'Atrocious'

The lawyer who has brought the case against her, Nabih El-Wahsh, says that is going too far.

"What she said about the pilgrimage and the laws of inheritance is atrocious. She has offended the feelings of Muslims," he said.

"Whether she has to divorce her husband or not, is not important. What matters is that she should keep her opinions to herself, because they are against Islam. These opinions are poison for Muslims," he added.

Nawal El-Saadawi has been called "the new Salman Rushdie" - a term she vigorously rejects. She considers herself a good Muslim, pointing out that she studied and respects Islam.

Divided opinions

Khaled Dawoud of the Al-Ahram newspaper, says whether she wins or loses this case, this sends a stark warning to other writers.

"I think it is now narrowing further the margin of freedom of expression here," he said.

"I am sure now within this atmosphere any intellectual, any novelist, will have to take into consideration these kinds of pressures and the presence of these groups and the presence of these kinds of lawyers who are ready to sue you just because of your ideas," he added.

On the streets of Cairo, opinion about this case is divided. Liberals see the lawyer as a cynical opportunist, out to make a name for himself.

Saudi Human and Women's Rights Activist Wajeha Al-Huwaidar Speaks Out Against Honor Killings

On April 7, 2007, a teenage Yazidi Kurdish girl named Du'a Al-Aswad was stoned to death by a lynch-mob in Iraq, because she had violated her family's honor. A video of the stoning, filmed by the participants themselves using their mobile phones, was posted on http://leilamagazine17.blogspot.com/2008/02/blog-post_6785.html.

A year after the stoning, Saudi reformist and human rights activist Wajeha Al-Huweidar wrote a scathing article in which she harshly criticized the sexist character of Arab culture and particularly the phenomenon of "honor killings."

The following are excerpts from her article, which appeared on the reformist website www.aafaq.org .

"This Entire Part of the World [is Full of] Defeated and Dejected Men, Whose Only Way to Feel Victorious Is by Beating Women to Death"

"Last April, a 17-year old Iraqi girl named Du'a Khalil Al-Aswad fell in love with a boy from a different [religious] sect. By this act, she violated the 'honor' of the men in her sect, causing them to go mad with the boiling [rage] of hellfire. Their male [egos] swelled like cancerous tumors, and their minds locked into the primitive madness of 'honor.'

"They filled with restless madness, and in order to relive their anguish, they hurried to sentence poor Du'a to death, and then decided to carry out their sentence in the ugliest possible imaginable, i.e., by public stoning. They killed her with the utmost cruelty and depravity.

"Du'a Al-Aswad is a victim of the wild male madness called 'honor.' This concept is prevalent throughout the Greater Middle East [Al-Sharq Al-Awsat Al-Kabir], or perhaps I should say the Greater Filthy East [Al-Sharq Al-Awsakh Al-Kabir], since it is worthy of this label from every perspective – in particular [when it comes to] the treatment of women. From Pakistan and Afghanistan through Iran, the Middle East, and all the way to Morocco, this entire part of the world [is full of] defeated and dejected men, whose only way to gain some sort of victory is by beating their women to death.

"The depraved men who participated in the stoning of Du'a – all of them [guilty of] premeditated and deliberate murder – were raised to believe that the lives of their women are theirs to control. That is why they competed with one another at stoning Du'a, and fought to film her as she gasped out her last breaths. These horrible men conspired to kill a young girl who had committed no crime and hurt no one. Each of them picked up a boulder and hurled it at her. [Feeling] prideful and glorious, they bashed in this young [girl's] head, and her blood pooled on the ground as she lay there dead...

"But killing her was not enough for them. After she was dead, they mutilated her young body, kicking her and piling more rocks on top of her. Then they broke out in cries of 'Allah akbar,' and 'there is no god but Allah' as though they had just won a strategic battle.

"Not one of them felt pity for her, not one of them lifted a finger to help her, and not one of them [even tries to] speak in her defense. They were like the stones they hurled at her – frozen and devoid of all compassion."

In the Middle East, the Life of a Woman Is Worth Far Less than That of an Animal

"Had Du'a been an animal, someone would have [probably] taken notice and tried to rescue her from these inhuman men. But she was a woman, and in the Greater Filthy East, the life of a woman is worth far less than the life of an animal.

"According to the norms of the East, [the concept of] 'honor' relates only to the behavior of women. Women have become easy prey for men, who murder them in order to restore their threatened sense of honor.

"Du'a is a victim of both men and women – she is a victim of her entire society. In a region that fosters its mens' hostility until it becomes a raging demon, [men come to] feel that the women in their family are their property, to be treated any way they want.

"[This mentality is common among all Middle Eastern] men – Muslim and non-Muslim, Arab and non-Arab, rich and poor, educated and ignorant, great and small, those living in the West and those who have remained in their homelands – as long as they were raised in this region... that is riddled with the disease of 'honor,' or are of [Middle Eastern] origin. [All these men] have the potential to turn into raging beasts, especially if they were raised [to believe that] a woman's body and [her behavior] in her private life have a [direct] bearing on their honor and on the honor of their family, clan, nation, sect and all their ancestors throughout the ages.

"All those who believe that honor [resides] in the woman's body are potential murderers, and [could] someday murder a woman when their false sense of honor is aroused. All those who agree that a man has the right to murder a woman, or to cause her physical harm [for the sake of preserving] his honor, are potential killers."

The Women of the Middle East Raise Their Own Executioners

"Those who believe that men have more rights than women, and raise their children to believe the same, are raising [more] men who will kill another Du'a in some other place. All those who believe that they have the right to hit a woman in order to 'educate' her or 'correct her ways' might be involved in the murder or harming of a woman.

"Any legislator who passes a law dealing leniently with 'honor killings' is just as culpable as those who actively participated in the murder of the victims – [just as culpable as] the murderers who have the blood of Du'a and of other women on their hands.

"All governments that discriminate between men and women in rights and duties, that shelter the perpetrators of 'honor killings,' and that give men either partial or complete control over women's lives... collaborate with the perpetrators of these despicable crimes...

"On the anniversary of the death of the innocent Iraqi girl Du'a Khalil Al-Aswad, murdered in cold blood and in heinous male ferocity in front of eye witnesses, I say to the women of the Greater Filthy East: 'Good for you for managing to raise beasts who delight in harming you and in shedding your blood and the blood of your daughters.' [And] good for the countries and governments that attribute more importance to the lives of animals than to your lives and the lives of your daughters.

"Good for you for defending your beastly men and supporting them on political [issues]. Good for you for supporting their failing movements and wars, and their hostile thinking that allows [them] to humiliate and beat you.

"Good for you for creating your own executioners, and for supporting and aiding them. You know full well that many of them regard you as worthless beings existing [solely] for their pleasure.

"Good for you for [tolerating] these inhuman men, many of whom yearn to drink your blood and the blood of your daughters whenever the drums of revenge and 'honor' start beating in their rotting and petrified brains."

Israel's Predicament at 60: World's worst neighbourhood

Two religiously-identified new states emerged from the shards of the British empire in the aftermath of World War II. Israel, of course, was one; the other was Pakistan.

They make an interesting, if infrequently-compared pair. Pakistan's experience with widespread poverty, near-constant internal turmoil, and external tensions, culminating in its current status as near-rogue state, suggests the perils that Israel avoided, with its stable, liberal political culture, dynamic economy, cutting-edge high-tech sector, lively culture, and impressive social cohesion.

But for all its achievements, the Jewish state lives under a curse that Pakistan and most other polities never face: the threat of elimination. Its remarkable progress over the decades has not liberated it from a multi-pronged peril that includes nearly every means imaginable: weapons of mass destruction, conventional military attack, terrorism, internal subversion, economic blockade, demographic assault, and ideological undermining. No other contemporary state faces such an array of threats; indeed, probably none in history ever has.

The enemies of Israel divide into two main camps: the Left and the Muslims, with the far Right a minor third element. The Left includes a rabid edge (International ANSWER, Noam Chomsky) and a more polite centre (United Nations General Assembly, Canada's Liberal Party, the mainstream media, mainline churches, school textbooks). In the final analysis, however, the Left serves less as a force in its own right than as an auxiliary for the primary anti-Zionist actor, which is the Muslim population. This latter, in turn, can be divided into three distinct groupings.

First come the foreign states: Five armed forces that invaded Israel on its independence in May 1948, and then neighboring armies, air forces, and navies fought in the wars of 1956, 1967, 1970, and 1973. While the conventional threat has somewhat receded, Egypt's U.S.-financed arms build-up presents one danger and the threats from weapons of mass destruction (especially from Iran but also from Syria and potentially from many other states) present an even greater one.

Second come the external Palestinians, those living outside Israel. Sidelined by governments from 1948 until 1967, Yasir Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization got their opportunity with the defeat of three states' armed forces in the Six-Day War. Subsequent developments, such as the 1982 Lebanon war and the 1993 Oslo accords, confirmed the centrality of external Palestinians. Today, they drive the conflict, through violence (terrorism, missiles from Gaza) and even more importantly by driving world opinion against Israel via a public relations effort that resonates widely among Muslims and the Left.

Third come the Muslim citizens of Israel, the sleepers in the equation. In 1949, they numbered merely 111,000, or 9 percent of Israel's population but by 2005, they had multiplied ten-fold, to 1,141,000, and to 16 percent of the population. They benefited from Israel's open ways to evolve from a docile and ineffective community into a assertive one that increasingly rejects the Jewish nature of the Israeli state, with potentially profound consequences for that the future identity of that state.

If this long list of perils makes Israel different from all other Western countries, forcing it to protect itself on a daily basis from the ranks of its many foes, its predicament renders Israel oddly similar to other Middle Eastern countries, which likewise face a threat of elimination.

Kuwait, conquered by Iraq, actually disappeared from the face of the earth between August 1990 and February 1991; were it not for an American-led coalition, it would quite certainly never been resurrected. Lebanon has been effectively under Syrian control since 1976 and, should developments warrant formal annexation, Damascus could at will officially incorporate it. Bahrain is occasionally claimed by Tehran to be a part of Iran, most recently in July 2007, when an associate of Ayatollah Ali Khamene'i, Iran's supreme leader, claimed that "Bahrain is part of Iran's soil," and insisted that "The principal demand of the Bahraini people today is to return this province … to its mother, Islamic Iran." Jordan's existence as an independent state has always been precarious, in part because it is still seen as a colonial artifice of Winston Churchill, in part because several states (Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia) and the Palestinians see it as fair prey.

That Israel finds itself in this company has several implications. It puts Israel's existential dilemma into perspective: If no country risks elimination outside of the Middle East, this is a nearly routine problem within the region, suggesting that Israel's unsettled status will not be resolved any time soon. This pattern also highlights the Middle East's uniquely cruel, unstable, and fatal political life; the region ranks, clearly, as the world's worst neighborhood. Israel is the child with glasses trying to succeed at school while living in a gang-infested part of town.

The Middle East's deep and wide political sickness points to the error of seeing the Arab-Israeli conflict as the motor force behind its problems. More sensible is to see Israel's plight as the result of the region's toxic politics. Blaming the Middle East's autocracy, radicalism, and violence on Israel is like blaming the diligent school child for the gangs. Conversely, resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict means only solving that conflict, not fixing the region.

If all the members of this imperiled quintet worry about extinction, Israel's troubles are the most complex. Israel having survived countless threats to its existence over the past six decades, and it having done so with its honor intact, offers a reason for its population to celebrate. But the rejoicing cannot last long, for it's right back to the barricades to defend against the next threat.

There are two main sects in Islam: Sunni and Shi'ite. Sunni Islam is the largest denomination, although in some countries it is a minority.

Sunnis have their historical roots in the majority group who followed Abu Bakr, an effective leader, as Muhammad's successor, instead of his cousin and son-in-law Ali. The Sunnis are so named because they believe themselves to follow the sunnah or "custom" of the Prophet. Shi'ites are those Muslims who followed Ali, the closest relative of Muhammad, as Muhammad's successor.

Sufi Islam is not exactly a sect, but the mystical expression of Islam. It is therefore not included in the chart below. Sufism might be compared to Christian monasticism, in that both emphasize a quiet, simple life focused on obeying and experiencing God. Opinions of Sufis differ within the Muslim community.

பாகிஸ்தானின் தலித் ஜனாதிபதிகள் : எழில் பதிவில்

எழில் பதிவில் நான் இட்ட பின்னூட்டம். படியாய் முயற்சித்தாலும், இந்த கயமைத்தனத்தை எள்ளுவது கூட கோழைத்தனமாகத் தெரிகிறது.

தலித் தலித் என முழங்குபவர்கள் எல்லாம், அதை பயன்படுத்தி இஸ்லாமிஸ்டுகளுக்கு வக்காலத்து வாங்க முற்படுகிறார்களே தவிர, இஸ்லாம் அதிகப் பெரும்பான்மையுடன் விளங்கும் பிரதேசங்களில் நடத்தப்படும் தலித் அழித்தொழிப்பைப் பற்றியும், அங்கே இஸ்லாமிய எதேச்சாதிகாரத்தால் தொடர்ந்து நிகழ்த்தப்பட்டுவரும் இன நசுக்கலைப் பற்றியும் வாய்திறக்க மறுக்கிறார்கள்.

அதாவது, மலேஷிய ஹிந்த்ராஃப் மட்டும் விடாப்பிடியாக போராடாமல் விட்டிருந்தால், இவர்கள் எல்லாம் பழைய ஜல்லியையே அடித்துக் கொண்டிருப்பார்கள் - மலேஷியாவில் சம உரிமை கிடைக்கின்றது, மலேஷியாவில் தமிழர்களுக்கு ராஜ உபசாரம் நடக்கிறது, அங்கே பிரச்சினை செய்வதெல்லாம் இங்கேயிருந்து போன மென்பொருளாளர்கள் தான், ஹிந்த்ராஃப் ஒரு இந்துத்துவ அமைப்பு அது வேண்டுமென்றே பிரச்சினையை கிளப்புகிறது ... இந்த ரீதியில் முன்பு எப்படி பிரச்சாரம் செய்தார்களோ அதே ரீதியில் சுப.வீரபாண்டியனிலிருந்து, த.மு.மு.க வரை இப்படியே பிரச்சாரம் செய்து நம்மை மூளைச்சலவை செய்து கொண்டிருப்பார்கள்.

இந்த மூளைச்சலவையைத் தான் பாகிஸ்தானான, பங்களாதேஷ் ஆன இந்தியாவின் பகுதிகளைப் பற்றியும் இவர்கள் செய்துவருகின்றனர். டாகாவில் இன்றும் மலம் அள்ளுவது நம்ம தலித் தான். அங்கே இவர்கள் ஜாதி இழிவை மட்டுமல்ல, மத இழிவையும், இன இழிவையும் சேர்ந்து சுமக்கிறார்கள். பாகிஸ்தானில் ஹாரிக்கள் என்ற அடைமொழியே நமது பிற்பட்ட /தாழ்த்தப்பட்ட சமூகங்களுக்கு இருக்கிறது (ஹாரி - தோற்கடிக்கப்பட்ட காஃபிர்கள்). அங்கே ஹாரிக்களின் நிலை கொத்தடிமைகளையும் விட மோசமானது.

இதையெல்லாம் கேட்டால், அது வேறு நாடு என்று ஜல்லியடிப்பார்கள். "ஏனய்யா, நீர் தான் இந்தியா ஒரு தேசமல்ல, அது தேசீயங்களின் செயற்கையான கூட்டமைப்பு என்று சொல்கின்றீரே, அப்போது குஜராத் என்ற 'வெளிநாட்டை' பற்றி புலம்பும் நீர் பாகிஸ்தான் என்ற வெளிநாட்டையும், பங்களாதேஷ் என்ற வெளிநாட்டையும் பற்றி ஏன் பேச மறுக்கின்றீர்" என்று நானும் எத்தனையோ இஸ்லாமிஸ்ட் ஜால்ராக்களிடம் கேட்டாகிவிட்டது. என்ன செய்ய, கோவிலுக்கு முன்பு கடவுளைக் கும்பிடுபவன் காட்டுமிராண்டி என்று போர்டு வைக்கும் வீரம், மசூதிக்கு முன்னால் எவனோ ஒருவன் நபி என்று தன்னை சொல்லிக் கொண்டதை நம்புபவன் முட்டாள், அதை நம்பி அடுத்த வீட்டு சகோதரனை 'கடவுளின் எதிரி' , 'காஃபிர்' என்று சொல்லி அவன் மீது ஜிகாது தொடுப்பவன் காட்டுமிராண்டி என்று போர்டு வையுங்கள் என்று கேட்டால் காணாமல் போய்விடுகிறது.

இஸ்லாமிஸ்டுகளைப் பற்றி நான் அதிகம் கவலையோ, கோபமோ படவில்லை. மதம் எனும் அபின் செய்யும் மூளைச்சலவை அது. அந்த அபின் தொடர்ந்து வெற்றியை ஈட்டிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் வரை போதை தெளியாது. தொடர்ந்து தோல்வியே வந்தால் தான் அது சுய பரிசோதனைக்கு முயலும். ஆனால், எனக்கு எரிச்சலும், கோபமும் ஏற்படுவதெல்லாம் நம்ம இஸ்லாமிஸ்ட் ஜால்ராக்களைக் கண்டுதான்.

இந்த ஜால்ராக்கள் விதவிதமான பின்னணியிலிருந்து வருகின்றன. ஆஃப்கானிஸ்தானில் குஃபாரை அழித்தொழிக்க முயன்ற தாலிபான்களின் புத்தர் சிலையுடைப்பை பால்பவுடருக்காக நிகழ்த்தப்பட்ட எதிர்ப்பு என்று ஜல்லியடித்த அறிவுஜீவி தங்கமணி, நான் இஸ்லாத்தைப் பற்றி கதையளக்கிறேன் என்று எவ்வித ஆதாரத்தையும் சொல்லாமல் பொத்தாம் பொதுவில் தமிழ்மணத்தை நான் விமர்சித்தபோது சொன்ன - தற்போது அதை ஈழத்தமிழருக்கு எதிரான எதிர்ப்பு என்று திசை திருப்பும் பெயரிலி இரமணீதரன் கந்தையா, நான் ஆதாரம் இல்லாமல் பேசுகிறேன் என்று ஆதாரம் எதுவுமே இல்லாமல் சொன்ன அசுரன்/க.விநாயகம் போன்றவர்களின் பொய்மையும், உண்மையை உணர்ந்தும் இந்து சமூகத்தின் மீதான அதீத வெறுப்பால் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள மறுக்கும் கயமையும் தான் எனக்கு எரிச்சலையும், கோபத்தையும் ஏற்படுத்துகின்றது.

இவர்கள் எல்லாம் எவ்வித விவாதத்துக்கும் வரமாட்டார்கள். பொத்தாம் பொதுவில் தங்களது பொய்ப் பிரச்சாரங்களை ஒரு வார்த்தையில், எதோ ஒரு வரியில் வைத்துவிட்டு வழக்கம் போல தங்களது வெறுப்பியலை துவங்கிவிடுவார்கள். இவர்கள் மறைந்து கொள்ள எதாவது ஒரு வெறுப்பு வேண்டும், அது இந்தியாவின் மீதான வெறுப்பாக இருக்கும் அல்லது பிராம்மணர்கள் மீதான வெறுப்பாக இருக்கும் அல்லது இந்து மதத்தின் மீதான வெறுப்பாக இருக்கும். அட, இந்த வெறுப்புகள் இருந்துவிட்டுப் போகட்டும். ஆனால், அதற்காக ஏன் மற்ற உண்மைகளை மறுக்க வேண்டும்?

என்னமோ போங்க... நானும் இப்படி நிதானத்தை இழந்ததே இந்த இணையத்தின் மகத்தான வெற்றி என்று நினைக்கிறேன். இஸ்லாமிஸ்டுகள் கூட நாளாவட்டத்தில் திருந்திவிடுவார்கள், ஆனால், இவர்களை கடவுள் புவியிறங்கி வந்தாலும் திருத்தமுடியாது என்று தோன்றுகிறது.
