It’s little wonder really that as I grew older I fell in love with opals.

The rainbow is a meteorological phenomenon that is caused by reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets resulting in a spectrum of light and colors appearing in the sky.

Opals are another colorful wonder! They are unique compared to other gemstones. Its the regular array of tiny balls of silica in opals that diffract light and show off rainbow colors.

I’m sure you wont find it hard to fall in love with your own little rainbow. Be warned through, you will spend hours gazing and being amazed by this beautiful gemstone!

This one was taken when my brother Kent was mining at ‘ 8 mile’ in Coober Pedy.

We are sitting on the top of his 40 Ton excavator. I was visiting that week to film the documentary

‘Coober Pedy Opal Capital Of The World’. Lucky for us, Dad and Kent and Milton found opal that day and it’s all on film!

Kent and Bob had been mining in Coober Pedy for months and months in the extreme heat and swallowing fly’s, finally that day was pay day. Kent’s laughing at the opal Bob put in his mouth.

If you look closely you can see they have half dug out the two bands of opal protruding from the wall.

Every time I look at this photo is makes me smile.
