As you may know, NETC is an annual gathering of IT professionals from land-grant universities and colleges across the country.

404 Awards Banquet – Dinner Cruise Aboard the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen

Named for the infamous 404 Error, the NETC 404 Awards are a hallowed and time-honored tradition. Individuals in the NETC community come together in the spirit of fun to celebrate and exchange stories about their most interesting, challenging and entertaining technology-related experiences over the past year.

Although the categories may vary from year to year as determined by the hosts, the person with the most compelling story in each category receives a coveted 404 Award. Participants present their stories to their peers in attendance, and winners are determined by audience response.

This year, the 404 Awards will be held on board the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen, where we will cruise the mighty Mississippi River while enjoying a lavish Creole buffet in elegantly appointed dining rooms.

Regular registrations can be cancelled through April 30, 2012, and are subject to a $50 cancellation fee.

Guest registrations can be cancelled through April 30, 2012, and are subject to a $25 cancellation fee. Substitutions can be made online at no cost through May 18, 2012, or by email up until the event.

Tour reservations and merchandise are non-refundable. Please contact us if you wish to cancel a tour reservation; if we can resell your spot prior to the conference, we will refund your cost. “Why Voodoo? Are you people just creepy or what?”

How many times have your technology skills been dismissed by clients, friends, or family as just “that voodoo you do with computers”? We’ve all heard some variation on that theme throughout our careers in information technology.

NETC 2012 is just a celebration and exploration of “that voodoo” on a grand scale. And if our creepy voodoo-vibe scares off the lightweights, well, that’s okay too, because NETC 2012 is packed with enough great presentations, discussions, technologists, and IT voodoo to short-circuit the faint of heart.

NETC is an opportunity for sharing and learning about innovative types and uses of information technology. Participation is not limited to faculty and staff of Extension. In fact, anyone with an interest in information technology and its use in higher and continuing education, as well as in organization management, is welcome to participate.

NETC is guided by the NETC Steering Committee, a 10-person committee of which 6 are elected by Extension IT professionals nationwide. Three members represent institutions who have hosted or will be hosting NETC, and one represents the Association for Communication Excellence, which meets concurrently with NETC every other year.

Catch a ride to LSU’s beautiful campus on the LSU/Tech Combo Tour. We provide roundtrip transportation from New Orleans to Baton Rouge via a comfortable charter bus. You’ll get to see the LSU campus, renowned for its majestic oak trees, calming lakes and Italian Renaissance architecture. For the technology portion of this tour, you will be visiting the Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD). CAMD is a research center where synchrotron light is used for developing new materials for fuel production, understanding toxic byproducts of combustion, developing new drugs and treatments for killing cancer with a new, more-effective radiation therapy, and developing the new micromachines of the future. New Orleans city tours begin at the birthplace of New Orleans - the French Quarter! As you ride through the Quarter hearing about the history of the city, Cajun Encounters tour guides point out many locally known and loved highlights along the way including: Jackson Square, the Saint Louis Cathedral and our famous French Quarter balconies. Leaving the French Quarter, they’ll take you down creole Esplanade Avenue to the City of the Dead. See the graves of St. Louis Cemetery as you walk through the well-known and highly visited New Orleans landmark. City Park and its oaks are the next stop. Along the way they will also show some of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the rebuilding efforts that have taken place since this time. From there you head to the “American Sector,” the New Orleans Garden District. With its live-oak tree lined St. Charles Avenue, you will get a great sense of the luxury and extravagance of old New Orleans. This is a step back into the antebellum era. The New Orleans Warehouse & Arts District is the final leg of your New Orleans overview which includes the D-Day Museum, now known as the National World War II Museum, the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center and sites from the movie “JFK” and other box office hits.

Self-guided French Quarter Walking Tour
Tour at your own pace and discover the sites of the historic New Orleans French Quarter. Along with bars and some of the best restaurants in the world, see beautiful architecture, the famous French Quarter wrought iron balconies and courtyards, and historic structures. Some must-see sites include: Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, Preservation Hall, the Lalaurie House, the Presbytère, the Cabildo, St. Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square, Café du Monde, and the French Market.

Streetcar Tour
Ride the famous New Orleans streetcar and discover the beautiful Uptown area. The St. Charles streetcar line will transport you from the French Quarter, past Lee Circle, and through the Garden District along beautiful tree-lined St. Charles Avenue with its antebellum mansions, restaurants, and shops. You will get to see Audubon Park, Tulane, and Loyola University. The streetcar will wind its way to the river’s bend at South Carrollton Avenue and back. A one-way trip on the St. Charles streetcar line takes approximately 40 minutes. A round-trip ride on the line takes approximately 90 minutes. Self-guided Walking Tour of Uptown New Orleans
To begin this tour, take the St. Charles line of the streetcar from the French Quarter to the historic, elegant Uptown New Orleans area. Local gems to explore and discover include the Garden District, Uptown New Orleans, and St. Charles Avenue. You can then take Washington Avenue past Lafayette Cemetery (closed Sundays) to Magazine Street. Stroll along Magazine Street and take in six miles of unique boutiques, shops, restaurants, coffee houses, and bars before catching the streetcar back to the French Quarter.

Luke Wroblewski

Luke W. is an internationally recognized digital product leader who has designed or contributed to software used by more than 700 million people worldwide.

Luke was Co-founder and Chief Product Officer (CPO) of Bagcheck which was acquired by Twitter Inc. just nine months after being launched publicly. Prior to this, Luke was an Entrepreneur-in-residence (EIR) at Benchmark Capital and the Chief Design Architect (VP) at Yahoo! Inc. where he worked on product alignment and forward-thinking integrated customer experiences on the Web, mobile, TV, and beyond.

Luke is the author of three popular Web design books (Mobile First, Web Form Design & Site-Seeing: A Visual Approach to Web Usability) in addition to many articles about digital product design and strategy. He is also a consistently top-rated speaker at conferences and companies around the world, and a Co-founder and former Board member of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

Previously, Luke was the Lead User Interface Designer of eBay Inc.'s platform team, where he led the strategic design of new consumer products (such as eBay Express and Kijiji) and internal tools and processes. He also founded LukeW Ideation & Design, a product strategy and design consultancy, taught graduate interface design courses at the University of Illinois and worked as a Senior Interface Designer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), the birthplace of the first popular graphical Web browser, NCSA Mosaic.
