Every time I talk the cough gets worse — Which is kinda hard to avoid, given the nature of my work.

Being this sick while Barry is only out for two weeks has sucked. I’m not my lively, happy self, and I feel like I’m letting him down because all I feel like doing (despite going out as much as I can) is flopping on the couch after a day at the office. Not so much fun for someone who’s on his vacation — He’s being an incredibly good sport about it all.

But yesterday, after a particularly bad, cough-ridden conference call I was leading, I immediately headed back to the doctor, AGAIN, and demanded antibiotics and something to stop the inflammation I can feel in my bronchial passages. This time, and with a different walk-in doctor, he had no trouble giving me what I needed to get better (only took 5 weeks… sheesh) and the doc requested that I get a chest x-ray as well. I’m still on the fence about that, though.

Do you always comply with a request for a chest x-ray? Am I being silly? I get so many darned x-rays (teeth, face, chest, ribs) due to the various surgeries over the years… It seems like a waste of radiation to me.

Oh… And, on the way back to the office yesterday? The Chicklette ran out of gas. Yep, the gas gauge is getting worse — I thought I had over a quarter of a tank left. Then, because I couldn’t park it properly (despite Shawn coming out to push me into a parallel spot the best he could) I had to put my flashers on, and that drained my battery. Luckily I have a great guy who came out, got me gas, and jumped my poor car.

Good times.

The housewarming was exceptional — I’m so glad everyone had a great time. It was really great to see some friends that I haven’t seen in forever, as well as my Step Mom and her boyfriend coming to join in the excitement of it all, too!

It was a hot, sticky evening, and yet, with the cross breeze my place gets, it was still comfortable! I love living up that high…

Of course, there was spillage, but!!! I have hardwood, now! So, no more carpet stains to worry about — Man, I’ve missed having hardwood! Good times.

Barry makes me really happy.

But, I’ve become quite independent during the two years of singlehood, it seems, and I’ve all but forgotten how to take help and input from someone else. It is an adjustment for sure, but definitely one that I’m happily putting my effort towards. It’s easier for Barry, because he hasn’t been living on his own for years, but he has a lot of patience for the shift in mindset I’m doing my best to make.

Take today, for instance…

Barry, who’s on vacation while here in Vancouver for two weeks, and because he’s such a helpful soul, decided to do something nice for me and research mounting options for my 52″ tv. I’m having custom cabinets installed along one full wall of my living room, and getting rid of the “open concept” tv stand that gives me no storage, and wires everywhere. Unfortunately, he didn’t know that I’d already asked around, and have a solution that is reasonably priced in mind…

Barry went to a home theatre store and got some bad advice (they said I’d have to take down the whole wall!!! and reinforce everything from the inside of the wall - which is completely bad advice, especially if you are working with a tight budget). When he heard this, he then went to my cabinet maker to have them build in a quote for mounting the tv into the cabinet (which, sadly, I didn’t want, because I’ll be renting my place out to others in a few years time, and it needs to be a universal mounting system for someone else’s tv).

So, when I met him for lunch, and heard about all the work he’d gone to, I didn’t think about my reaction and blurted out that I already had solutions in mind (I worked in home theatre for years, after all) — Without giving any thought to the fact that he’d put so much effort into being helpful.

*sigh*

It’s second nature to those that are used to having someone in their lives to help, but for me… I need to learn to just say “thank you”, and be grateful for the help.

I’m getting there. And, thankfully, I have a really patient boyfriend…

Barry has been here for 3.5 days, and holy, have we gotten a ton accomplished in that short time frame! As always, he’s been an incredible help — I’m a typical useless girl when it comes to home wiring, upgrades, and even reaching to replace a fixture in my hallway. Luckily, not only is Barry tall, but he’s also great with wires!

So, gone is the crappy electrical fixtures and Jetson’s lighting! Woohoo!

We’re even going to be painting a feature wall in my bedroom a dark red… right behind the bed. Mmmm… Red. My favourite colour. Not like you could tell: Practically every accent in my home (not painted) is red. Okay, so I’m going with what I know I like.

Barry and I have been having a great time together as well! Busy, busy, busy, though! I really wanted Barry to experience my life as it normally is — Might as well give him a taste of what the actual pace of my life is, than some slowed-down version for his temporary benefit. He seems to be enjoying it, so far!

Tonight, I’m really looking forward to heading out to dinner with Monica, Chris, Miranda and Reilly. Barry really likes these guys, too, so I’m sure it’ll be a fantastic evening.

That is… If Barry doesn’t electrocute himself before I get home — He had a power “issue” this afternoon, and blew out the local panel while updating some more fixtures around the place. Ooops. He’s still texting me, so he must be okay.

I guess that’s what happens when I have so, so, so much going on in my life — Even though it is all good stuff!

So, as most of you know by now, I’m no longer a single chick. In fact, over the past 7 or so weeks, I’ve been falling for someone really special.

Meet Barry!

We first met in January during the half marathon adventure I was participating in to raise funds for Team Diabetes… Buzz Bishop had approached me to join in, and in so doing, inspired yet another life change for me. Although, I didn’t know it at the time.

Now, for those of you playing along at home, that’s the second time that Buzz has inadvertently inspired a huge change in my life. Remember the Facebook story? Click over to refresh your memory!

Barry and I had a fantastic time on the (his full marathon, and my half marathon) Florida adventure, but at the time, Barry was married and I didn’t even notice him “in that way” because of that fact. I did, however, notice his crazy fun sense of humour, and his really dynamic personality.

By the time Barry came out for the Vancouver Marathon the first weekend in May, he had been single for several months, and suddenly, a light bulb went on over my head. I really liked this guy.

A kick of the shins (seriously!) and a little playful flirting, and he noticed me, too. When I found out he was moving to Vancouver from Camrose, Alberta sooner than I thought, everything fell into place. In fact, the cruise couldn’t have happened at a better time. It allowed us a full two weeks of forced writing to communicate during my trip, and each email I read, I fell more and more. We’d talked nearly every day on the phone before that, and had a ton of fun doing so, but it was those emails that allowed me, very quickly, to really get to know Barry.

On my birthday, aboard the ship with Lisa, I had received the most special present… Click to hear it yourself:

The Notebook is a movie that Barry and I both love and we both believe that the story is one we’d love to have someday — which explains our pet names for each other, Noah and Ellie. When I heard the message Barry was so very nervous to send, and the song he sang just for me, I cried. I knew I loved this man.

He’s on his way out to share my life with me for two weeks — I hope that you can make it by to meet him!

I can’t wait to see him tonight.

As most of you know, I just moved on Sunday, am quite sick with what appears to be the flu, and haven’t even STARTED unpacking yet. It’s true. And weird, and completely out of character for me.

But, tonight, I have to not only start unpacking, but also finish! The moving crate guy is coming tomorrow to pick up the plastic containers I moved in.

So, apologies for being quiet over here, but I have a ton going on.

Oh, and for those asking about the paint job on my new place while I was away? They finished at 6pm on the day. Of. The. Move. *sigh* It looks pretty good though — The color is a neutral light cappuccino color with white trim everywhere (including the window metal), and ready for my crazy amateur photography to be mounted on the walls to spice it up! I still can’t believe I spent $2200 on the paint job. …Needed to be done, though!

Feels like practically everything is changing in my life again, for the better, and I can’t wait to share it all with you! Check back soon!

The cruise is almost over… Tomorrow is the last day, and we’re ‘at sea’, on our way back to Vancouver. I’m having a fabulous time, and these past 2 weeks have been really amazing. But, I’m ready to come home now, and start my move…

Yep! I move on Sunday!

I still haven’t had an email update from my painter who should have finished the extensive painting while I have been away, and that’s stressing me out a bit. I’ve emailed him twice looking to put my mind at ease about the colour choice — VERY difficult to pick a color online, so I wanted him to give me a status report, and let me know that the main colour I chose wasn’t too yellow. I’m hoping for a light brown with white trim on the windows and door jams.

I’ve got a LOT to do when I get back — finish packing, ensure that my two buildings have my move booked okay, follow up with Mini Move (thank you to those that suggested this company!) for the time on Sunday, move over some of the more valuable things if I can… and, the list goes on.

Today in Ketchikan, Lisa and I elected to just walk around town, instead of doing another excursion — Glad we went this route! It’s a little windy and overcast here today, and kayaking in this weather might not have been the best way to spend our money.

I’ve only got a few minutes left on board the ship for internet access, so I probably won’t be updating my blog again until late Saturday night after I’ve gotten everything organized at home.

Also, I can’t tell you how difficult it is to be away from the guy I’ve been seeing for these past two weeks! It’s pure torture being away from someone for so long, when it’s a fairly new situation for us both. More on this likely when I get back, and can talk to him about how much we want to share here…

It was a relaxing day — Although I didn’t get much sleep as Lisa and I had to be up at the crack of dawn for horseback riding in Skagway.

The excursion was totally a blast, and Lisa and I had a fabulous time on the trails with our horses. My horse, Sabbath (because he was black.. LOL) was a bit frustrated with Lisa’s horse in front of me because he was so pokey. Sabbath also liked to push the limits to see if he could get away with eating all along the way, which the guides asked us to ensure that they didn’t.

When we got back to the ship, after walking around the town, I had a nap — bliss!

I read for a while, and then it was time for dinner — We elected to go to the for-fee place: Sabatinis, which was awesome. The service was spectacular, and so was the food… TOO MUCH food tho!! OMG. I think it was 7 courses.

Before dinner, however… Lisa handed me two gifts. One was from her - A beautiful necklace made of silver and amber, and a box… From the guy in my life. Apparently he conspired with Lisa and sent an mp3 with a special message, and a song he sung just for me. It was so special.

I cried.

And… Cried. OMG. What the heck is wrong with me? It just touched my heart so much. No one has ever gone to that kind of special lengths to make sure it was romantic, personal, and sweet. He’s one of a kind…

I called him as we were leaving Skagway, while I could still get cell coverage, and couldn’t stop thanking him for such a romantic gesture.

And, I also asked if I could share it with you guys… He said I could. So, when I get back from this trip, I’ll post it for you! (check back on Sunday or so — I’m moving that day, but I’ll try to find time to fit that in)

So… I had such a special day. The weather was lovely, Lisa and I had a fabulous time, and I received such a special gift from them both.

I’m in Juneau again today! I just got back from the ziplining! Wow, how awesome was that excursion! We were up at 5:40am this morning, and we were on the course by 7:20 — After taking a jet boat out to the location. **Stunning** views! And, Lisa did remarkable! She was so nervous this morning, but managed to get past her fear… I got some spectacular shots, and the guide also took a view for me of the longest zip. This course was WAY better than the last one (which was also fun) — far higher, and longer, and a different type of hook up where we had to use our hand behind us to brake.

FUN FUN FUN!

So, now we’re ready to explore the rest of Juneau, which is beautiful and sunny again this morning.

Lisa dragged me to a 50s/60s night… And, it was actually really great… (LISA SAYS: It was awesome, and I haven’t had this much fun in years…)

The clock struck 12, (err, 11 Alaska time) and I felt… Um, OLD.

Okay, I didn’t feel like the 70+, aged on this cruise but I don’t feel young either…

But, it’s all good.

We’re now on our way to Glacier Bay again, and the weather was actually much better for our day in College Fjords today — It was raining a few days ago when we passed by during the last cruise.

Lisa is LOVING the cruise so far — And, I’m so relieved, because as a person who’s never cruised before, I was a little worried that she might get motion sick, or feel confined, but that was completely unfounded. She woke up early this morning and enjoyed the view before I got up (and I was up by 7:15am!). I was touched that she had tears in her eyes from the beauty of it all. That’s just how I felt the first day I saw the untouched beauty that is the coast of Alaska last week.

Whittier was um, uneventful. Yep, that’s a good word for it. They have portable type shacks (probably about 30 of them in total) that make up the town stores — And, from what I can see, it’s certainly not a hot bed of activity! LOL… It was EXTREMELY windy there, but the sun was out, so it wasn’t too cold. I ventured out to take a walk, and the dust was almost too much to take in my eyes.

Today was a lot of fun — Lisa and I walked for about an hour on the top of the ship (couple of miles, I’d say) and tried to work off my week of indulgences on the stairs today as well. I have only used the elevator once today, and we’ve been up and down probably 30 flights today. That’s tiring! I’m out of shape again.

Lisa and I have two excursions planned this week — Horseback riding in Skagway (on my birthday which is Tuesday) and a different canopy zipline tour in Juneau the next day… Lisa is a little freaked out by the ziplining, but I know her pretty well, and she talked herself into the adventure — I’m sure it’ll be a ton of fun, just as it was last week with Laurie in Ketchikan.

I’m off to see a game show of sorts now… And then I might enjoy a few big band hits a bit later before retiring for the night. Both Lisa and I have decided tomorrow will certainly be a sleep-in-kinda-day. We’re at sea, so why get up early?

Very relaxing, all in all!

I read for most of the day, and reflected, and read some more. Terribly exciting, I know!

Tonight, I have to get ready to move cabins, and I’m praying to the cabin gods that I get an upgrade, because the cabin they’ve currently got Lisa and I in sucks. They call it an outside cabin, but really, I don’t know what they were smoking when they determined that… It’s sunken way into the ship with a large lifeboat vessel in front of the window. Outside view of what, I wonder??

Oh well… I’ll enjoy whatever I get. I just hope it’s not cabin E519, is all. Let’s all pray together

Tomorrow, I say goodbye to Laurie, who’s still sick… I hope she feels better for flying home.

It’s now 10:15pm Alaska time, and Laurie has been ill for most of the day (poor girl) so I’ve spent most of the day lounging and enjoying the scenery.

Tonight, I elected to go somewhat formal, but not to the extreme… This cruise seems to be filled with mainly relaxed (older) people, and most haven’t dressed to the nines for the formal nights… I wore a lace skirt and matching blazer. I ended up fitting right in.

Later this evening, I tried my luck at a blackjack tournament ($10… and lost miserably) but decided to continue and see if my luck changed, and wouldn’t you know it? It did! My $50 turned into $200. I wisely walked away at that point, so at least I was up a little!

At this point, I’m trying to decide if I want to go to sleep, (Laurie is sleeping, so I can’t go and watch tv in the room) or watch the comedian. I think I’ll go for the comedy…

It’s another beautiful day here — Currently 10:21am Alaska time. I’m surrounded by snow peaked, rocky mountain ranges, and the Pacific Ocean riddled with mini iceburgs which have calved off of the main glacier here in the bay.

The clouds in the sky provide enough protection from the glare to get some really great shots this morning — I hope that my return trip here in a few days is as stunning for Lisa!

Laurie and I have only made it to one show here on board the Sapphire Princess… Mostly because the productions are geared for the older folks that make up the majority of the cruisers. I was kind of hoping for a few more comedians, because that’s by far my favourite passtime in the evenings on cruises. There’s one tonight, so perhaps I’ll make it out to that. Laurie isn’t really into the standup comics, so I’ll be flying solo if I go.

It’s formal night, tonight. Not sure how dressy I feel like going. I did bring one formal dress for the 2 weeks, but I think for the first time in 11 cruises, I’ll be going a little more casual. My dress that I brought is a warm-weather dress, and I find that I get easily chilled in the evenings.

We’ll see!

Tomorrow is our last day for this week of cruising, and we’ll be enjoying the College Fijords for the day. I hope to have internet access tomorrow! (Yesterday, the satelite ceased to connect, so we didn’t have internet aboard the ship from the afternoon onwards.)

I cannot believe this weather we’re having! It’s insanity!

Yesterday, in Juneau, we got to record-breaking temperatures, and today will be no different, it seems!

It was a remarkable day, yesterday — Laurie and I went on a float trip down the (place name of river here… starts with G, and I’ll have to fill it in later) river, where I got quite burnt on my scalp. Wow… It was a scorcher.

It was actually quite bizarre, really — Here we were drifting down a river beside a glacier, with bit of glacier that had fallen in. CHUNKS of ICE! And, yet… I was dying in the heat? Weird.

It was a very relaxing excursion, with “laughable” rapids — Which I was fine with, because I didn’t want to drop one of my cameras in the water along the way. Why on earth we were wearing rubber pants and boots, I have no idea.

Definitely an enjoyable day all the way around, though. Juneau is smaller than I thought it would be — despite there being 33,000 people there. I can’t see where, though. Perhaps the tourist area isn’t where the locals go to enjoy the day?

Today was breathtaking! Laurie and I enjoyed a vintage train ride up to the summit, leaving Alaska, and going into BC and the Yukon. It was about a 3.5 hour trip, and we climbed about 3,000 feet up. It was truly a remarkable view all the way up. Wow… I thought I was spoiled in Vancouver!

This afternoon, I was thinking of walking around the top of the ship for a while, but it’s way too hot for that right now. (I can’t believe I’m typing that in ALASKA) Not sure what the rest of the day holds for me, but it’ll probably include a book this afternoon.

It’s another beautiful day here… We’ve been extremely lucky. Yesterday, Laurie was even out sunbathing in a two piece on our balcony. I, however, do not tan, and elected to read in the cabin for a while. I think it must have been at least 28C. Apparently, from what I have heard from others, as well as the excursion staff yesterday, that weather is unheard of in Ketchikan.

This morning, I’m headinng off to breakfast a bit later than Laurie as I had some clothes that I needed to wash, and Laurie really wanted to get off the ship for a while.

Later today, we’re doing a float trip for a few hours. It sounds like a lot of fun! I’m actually bringing my good camera for this excursion — A little risky with water, but, I think it’ll be a really tame adventure.

I was re-reading what I wrote yesterday, and the first post, and wow, my writing sure gets awful when I’m paying .50 a minute for access. So, apologies in advance for the crappy readability!

And, thanks for the comments, I’ll try to respond to them later today! (It’s currently 8:30am Alaska time, and I really should go and get breakfast)
