Hi kids! Where do I start? I’m sitting on a beach in Roatan, Honduras! I still have to pinch myself saying that. This won’t be a long blog entry because I’m on my iPhone, and missing the beach time, so more to come from the iPad on board the Crown Princess tonight or tomorrow.

The highlights…

…kissing a stingray in Grand Cayman

…enjoying family time on our second leg of the trip

…having quality time with my guy, despite 8 of us traveling together

…waverunner riding to snorkeling adventure on reefs in the middle of the Caribbean Sea

…sun, sand (mmm rum punch) and ziplining in Roatan

Suffice to say, we are thoroughly relaxed and having a fab time! I can’t believe we still have two weeks of vacation left!

YOUR TURN: What have you been up to, this week?

Ps: happy birthday to my baby brother… Glad I got you on the phone today!

Pps: thanks so much for your comments – good to know people are still reading my updates!

Holy crap, how did that happen? It’s day 7 on board the cruise ship Oasis, and this is our second consecutive day at sea.

Now that I have some time, I’ll write about the things I couldn’t in port with limited time and battery power on my cell phone…

My favourite day so far has to be our excursion in St. Thomas – as I mentioned earlier, we did a power snorkel trip to Turtle Island, which is about an hour’s sail from the cruise ship dock.

We immediately boarded a “pirate ship” and motored over to the island in about 45 minutes, where we got quick instruction on how to best put on our masks, and use our floatation devices (not really required in such incredibly highly salted water… it was effortless to float without adding any air in the vests.

Barry and I elected to add on power turbines to our adventure, and were a little let down that they didn’t have enough machines to go around for those that had paid for them. We ended up sharing ours between the two of us, but as it turned out, it felt really good to kick about rather than power through the water with these hand held props. We definitely needed the exercise after the last few days of indulgences, not to mention the rum punch we partook in after we got back on board the boat.

We ended sailing most of the way back, and enjoyed the sun, the rum, and the great tunes. It was a lovely day…

St. Maarten was great too, although not much to write about there. We ended up finding this cute little bar at the end of the beach (see the previous post for the photo) and enjoyed a bucket of Desperato (tequila flavoured beer found down in these parts) and then decided to make our way over to the French side of the island. Uck. I wish we hadn’t done that, actually. Because of a traffic issue, what should have been a 20 minute cab ride ended up taking over an hour longer than that – And, only to get over there to discover the tags for everything in Euro, and crazy-out-of-this-world prices. By the time we got there, we literally had half an hour to walk around before finding another cab back. Oh, did I mention, the first cab had no air conditioning? In one of the most humid and hot places on the planet? Ya… Not the best choice, but we can say we did it, anyhow.

I’m currently enjoying a glass of Lindeman’s on the balcony while my hair soaks up some much-needed conditioner.

As I think about this past week, I am really looking forward to getting on board our next ship, the Crown Princess, where we’ll be meeting up with both sets of parents, and Annette and Lee (friend’s of Penney and Bob’s from Austrailia) – The last two weeks with them will be awesome! Besides, I’m looking forward to being on a more conventional cruise ship, if you can believe it, as we have barely seen any shows on this ship due to scheduling fiascos, and the inability to see a show without pre-booking them (and if you miss it, too bad, you lose). I don’t like that part of cruising with 5600 other people, that I can tell you.

I do want to mention, that Barry and I have really enjoyed meeting some awesome fellow Canadians on board – we’ve been sitting with a couple from Winnipeg (one of whom is currently still in radio) Patty and Curtis, and a really nice couple from Ontario, Louise and Elliott (who is in the cruise business) and finally the first couple we met at the terminal, Eves and Karen.

Time to rinse out my hair! Hope you have been enjoying my updates!

Hi guys! Today we are in St. Maarten – the Dutch side! It’s been an incredible week so far, but my phone has almost no charge I’ll write more later – but highlights include power snorkeling (and a whole lot of rum punch!) in St Thomas, lots of sun bathing on our balcony (gasp, I’m actually getting a tan!) and yummy $1.50 beers at both ports we have had beer at.

I’m loving the ship, but funny enough very much looking forward to Princess with our family next week.

I won’t be near Internet until Saturday now, as we are at sea for the next two days… so a very happy birthday to Toni in a couple days! xoxo

Hello everyone! It’s great to be in the sun!!!! So hot. And, my skin is loving the humidity as much as my hair is not.

The Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas is awesome but definitely not your patent’s cruise liner. The promenade is more like a nightclub with music and festive lights playing all day and night. It’s a party, and everyone is invited!

I’m writing this post on my phone from Nassau, our first port. We are having a great time and getting lots of sun and walking in. At the moment, I’m enjoying (I use that term loosely) a local beer at a cafe on one of the side streets. It’s awful, and I’m loving it.

I went to show Barry the Straw Market, but it burned down! The photo above is all that’s left from the building that used to reside in front of that street. Oh well, every stall has the same trinkets, beads and tshirts so we aren’t missing much.

Time to finish this beer and head back to the ship… We leave this port early today – 2:30.

Good morning! I’m sitting in the Port of Everglades, waiting until 11:30 to board the largest cruise ship in the world, Oasis of the Seas. It’s been an adventurous trip already.

The flights were easy, and it didn’t feel like seven hours in the air that it was. That said, the second flight was full of clueless old people that were obviously going in the same direction as we were.

Standing in line for our cab to the hotel last night, the clueless old people continued the theme with a comedy show starring two ancient people – one old woman who kept losing her shoes outside the cab and her husband who three times, got back out of the cab to put her shoes (and her purse) back in the cab. The cab door finally closed 10 minutes later, with what was an obviously frustrated cabbie pulling away in a huff.

Barry and I elected to grab a taxi instead of a shuttle, thinking it would be faster. Um. That would be a negative. He had looked up the hotel address while we were waiting for luggage to see if they had a free shuttle, and then used that address to give to the cab driver. When we arrived at what looked like a two star hotel, (I had booked a 2.5 star through Priceline, but hey, close enough right?) they didn’t have a reservation for us! Oh crap.

Turns out there’s more than one “Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort” – who knew? Oh, and don’t let the “Resort” part fool you. By the time we arrived, two cab rides and $45 lighter wallets, it was anything but a resort. Priceline? I won’t be booking with you again. I have now promised Barry he can pick the hotels for a while.

We got to the port way early, which is the way I like it, because we have a whole lot of running around booking entertainment to do (because I neglected to book it in time before we left – I’m sure most of the cruise vacationers on the Oasis have already booked, so damn… Oh well).

So, here I sit. It’s 10:30am, and we are about to board. We’ve already met some really nice people we’ll catch up with later for a drink – they are from Ontario, and seem like our type of people.

YOUR TURN: How’s your Saturday going?

How is everyone this fine (and snowy for us Calgarians) morning?

Me? I’m fabulous! First off, I want to say a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my wonderful husband… We had a great meal with awesome friends last night. Barry loves “meat on a stick” at Bolero – a Brazilian BBQ place – so I mostly surprised him with an evening there last night. He seemed to enjoy it. I hope this is another incredible year for him.

The countdown is definitely on now, as our cruise is only a couple of days away. We’re very much looking forward to some sun after the recent weather insanity here. Hurricane force winds over the weekend that actually blew our fence door off, combined with a severe winter storm blowing through today, gives us all the reason we need to be counting the minutes down, now! Let’s see, that would be…

The primary reason for this blog post today, however, is a question I’d like to pose to you… Have you had much luck with sneaking alcohol aboard Princess or Royal Caribbean cruise ships? I have done it in the past, but I haven’t attempted it in recent years. Previously, I’d wrap a couple of bottles of wine in my checked baggage (which, quite frankly, I rarely actually check… I drag it on board to avoid dealing with the porters) but this time, for both cruises, I am going to be checking my bags, and attempting to circumvent the high wine prices on board by bringing my own bottles (just a couple) to consume in my room.

So YOUR TURN – Let’s hear your stories!

ps: I can’t believe these cruises will bring me up to 15 in the count, and this is the first time I’ve left absolutely everything (including excursion bookings) until the very last minute. I hope that delay doesn’t come back and bite me in the ass because we miss out on the excursions, or night entertainment we want! (Oasis actually allows you to pre-book the evening entertainment before you board, but we missed it by 1 day… darnit)

I’m taking a few minutes over my lunch hour to reach out and give you a quick update.

I. Love. My. New. Job!

Okay, yes, I’m unbelievably busy… But, I’m learning a ton, and I’m actually talking to — and giving advice to — clients! As some of you know, that was my biggest issue in my previous position. I didn’t feel like I was making a difference in any of my client’s lives, and I was not allowed to talk about my opinion whatsoever.

What a difference that makes.

The timing of my upcoming trip for nearly a month is actually better than I thought. We leave in a few days, and it’ll be a much-needed rest from the amount of learning I’m doing every day. Also, December seems to be a slower month in this position, which is good… I get back just in time for tax season! But, working with the Commercial group means that tax season is not as hectic as on the personal side of this role. I’m thankful for that.

In other news…

I can’t believe it’s been four years this week that my Dad passed away. I was on a cruise to the Med at the time, and that was probably the lowest, darkest time for me in my life. My, how things have changed. I still think of my Dad nearly every day, but, I’ve let go of the deep sadness I felt for so long after his death. Dying is something we will all have to do at some point, so I’m choosing to remember the good times I enjoyed with my Dad, and celebrating what he brought to my life.

So, I’ll leave you with a question!

YOUR TURN: What’s been going on in your life, lately? Catch me up!!

Early this morning, I woke up with a start. I looked around my dark bedroom, and reality hit me right in the face… I’m not immortal, no one is. One day, I’ll be looking around just like this, and that will be my last moment. And then, I will no longer exist.

How frightening, hey?

It’s rare that my mortality really occurs to me. Is that weird? Of course, there are obvious times, like when my Dad died, that I was forced to really think about it, and realize how thankful I am that I came to be (and that my birth parents allowed me to have life). But, how often do I actually consider that one day, my conciousness will actually no longer “be”? Not often enough, I realize.

I guess that’s also the downside to not having faith in the presence of a “heaven” or everlasting life with a soul. But, I also think that forces me to live the moments, because in the grand scheme of my life, those moments really aren’t all that plentiful, so I try to enjoy each one of them.

That Henry Miller quote above is one I’ve quoted here on the blog in the past, but I haven’t *really* been living my life that awarely, obviously. I think this is a great wake-up call, though. I’m going to try harder to live more awarely, and be thankful for the life that I have. Because, it’s pretty darn awesome to be alive!

YOUR TURN: Do you ever pinch yourself into awareness, and realize how short your life really is? Does your faith (if any) help you to deal with your mortality?

Why can’t my work weeks fly by as quickly as this week off has?

It’s been a busy week of mostly studying. My brain feels full and foggy at this point. I think I’m done studying for today. At 4pm. Oh well. I’ll be bringing my study guide with me on our roadtrip this weekend (have I mentioned how much I love SeeWhyLearning‘s study guides? They are absolutely awesome for financial learning).

Tonight, B and I are off to enjoy dinner with @JeffMik and Paula – We haven’t seen them in a while, so it’ll be nice to catch up. And, since I’m currently back on my weight loss kick, CHARcut is a perfect place for a great meal without worrying about the food choices! Thankfully, I’ve only got 14 pounds to my goal of 150, so little slip ups here and there won’t be the end of the world this time around, although I’m trying my best to stay on clean eating and low calories.

Okay, granted, I hear we are in for another rough winter here in Alberta, but wow… the beautiful sun shining almost every single day really rocks my world. In fact… *gasp* I might actually prefer all this sun and bright, big sky to the dreary Vancouver weather, even with the cold and snow we get here in Calgary.

Now, that said, don’t ask me in the middle of winter if I still agree. I believe I’m entitled to bitch about the minus 40° temps when they happen, at least for one more winter.

In a similar theme… Have I mentioned how much I love my life, lately? Things are looking up!

YOUR TURN: What are you loving, today?

I thought I’d take a few minutes to write about something that has been bothering me for quite a while.

First of all, I just want to say, DO NOT READ INTO THIS POST as anything more than an attempt by me to talk about something that is bothering me about many, many interactions over the past couple of years online. This post is not directed at anyone specific, okay? (I don’t even know why I feel the need to say this, but maybe it’ll all become clear once you read what I’ve got to say.)

I started blogging 14 years ago, and let me tell you, it was a steep, steep learning curve to figure out what was acceptable to say and share on this site, and what simply wasn’t cool. Because my “blog” was more like an online journal back then, and I wrote fairly anonymously, I shared more. Hell, blogging wasn’t even a verb back then.

During the early years, things I said on previous incarnations of this site – and I admit now that I shared too much – pushed people’s buttons. I was going through a divorce, and was reaching out for help, support and guidance from friends, and my filter was not defined at all. Let’s face it, online etiquette wasn’t really clear back then.

I quickly learned that sharing info about my friends here (without their approval, despite me attempting to hide who I was talking about) or speaking out about something that should be brought up in a phone call rather than via a blog entry was an absolute no-no. Feelings were hurt, anger flared. You get the picture.

But, this was in the early years.

Since that time, etiquette online has been estabilished. Common sense (even if it’s still not so common) usually is encorporated in the social media platforms, and I’ve seen great improvements for the most part, in this area.

Except… When it comes to Twitter and Facebook. Why the hell is it that people treat others so poorly on these sites? Things, some would never say to the face of another, are proclaimed with such intensity on these sites, that it makes my head spin sometimes.

Clearly, there needs to be some sort of guideline people can use, so that feelings don’t get hurt, and friend’s relationships aren’t ruined because the written word was taken incorrectly? I don’t get how this can be so difficult? Take a breath, pause, and don’t fly off the deep end when you take offense to something someone has said.

I’ll leave you with the filter that I incorporated years ago… If you wouldn’t say something to your Dad that you want to share with the world, (he used to read this site when he was alive), or are too chicken to verbally say something that is bothering you to the person your anger, frustration or hurt is directed at, how about, DON’T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL.

Pick up the phone, people. You’ll eliminate many misconstrued issues that way.

YOUR TURN: What are your thoughts on this?

Today is day 1 of 9 for me being an out-of-work <strike>bum</strike> student. So far, I haven’t gotten nearly as much studying in as I would have liked. It’s been a bit of a stressful day, actually.

Mostly, because I headed over to Barry’s office, where we did some number-crunching and soul-searching to discover what we really want to achieve in our retirement. I guess we really do need to put our heads together finally on this, despite the fact that our unknowns are still pretty far and wide.

And, let’s face it, planning for the future while trying to balance the present-day expenses can be somewhat stressful. I’m not sure why I thought this goal-setting exercise would be so much fun. Oh well… We’ll get a basic plan in place, and come back to it in six months, when it’s sure to change all over again. That’s just part of the point of financial planning – getting the foundation in place.

On another note, Barry and I have decided we need to get out of Dodge for a couple of days this weekend. There’s nothing quite like a roadtrip to cure all that ails, right? Besides, Barry and I are almost out of all of our sugar-free stash of groceries, and need to stock up on more. The states have so many more choices for these kind of things.

YOUR TURN: What are you doing for Halloween weekend?

As I woke up this morning for the last time at the unGodly hour of 4:45 (okay, it was actually 3:30 because I couldn’t sleep), I felt sad about the change that was happening this afternoon.

Okay, not that sad… I won’t miss waking up that early, or having to go to bed at 8:30pm to be asleep by 9 (and missing out on most of the evening I used to enjoy so much). But, everyone has been so nice, wishing me well in my next role. I even came into the office to find a lovely card and a bottle of wine on my desk from one of the advisors I work with. So thoughtful.

I know that Barry will be happy that he’ll never be woken up at 5:30 because “I just don’t feel like taking in the train to the office – please won’t you drive me?”… Today will be the last day for that. That was awfully sweet of him to drive me in on my last day – he usually sleeps in at least two hours longer after I leave for work.

My next journey starts a week Tuesday. Here we go!

YOUR TURN: What are you looking forward to, this weekend? Me? I have some girls from the office coming over Saturday night – we’ve planned this for quite a while now, and it will be a blast!

There was a time, not so long ago, when I would be writing the news here before even telling my best friend. My, how times have changed, hey? I really do need to get back to writing here more. I miss everyone that I used to connect with via this site, and I certainly miss the interaction that used to take place here!

So… The juicy details? I’m heading to the same bank as Barry! Okay, not the same location -just the same organization. We will be working on different teams (there are two financial planning teams in Calgary) and I’ll be with the corporate planning group, whereas Barry works within a single branch.

Of course, this also means, the dreaded CTrain commute continues. For at least another couple of years. Yuck. Boy, do I ever miss the Skytrain Vancouver commuters had the pleasure of getting to and from work on. The CTrain annoys the snot out of me on a daily basis (for those that follow me on Twitter and Facebook, you already know ALL about this [sorry]).

I am going to miss a great many people at my current office. In the eight months that I’ve worked there, I’ve made some wonderful friends. Thankfully, they’ll be just two blocks away for lunch-get-togethers etc., but it’s still sad to leave them.

There you have it! My big news! My new job starts November 1st, and I’m really looking forward to the new challenges and experiences it will provide…

YOUR TURN: What’s new with you?

© 2012 Tanya (@NetChick). View orig post: http://netchick.net/2011/09/16/ive-made-a-decision-2/

Hey gang! I thought I’d share a decision I made today…

I’m weaning off the hcg (planned interruption with P3 foods) for a few weeks. My head is simply not in the game right now, and I really need to be at my best for the next 3 weeks, for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is my studying, which is a gong show right now with a foggy head. The pressure is on, and I only have a couple of weeks left before my two industry exams. And, these aren’t simple concepts I’m learning (read: second nature, they aren’t… I can’t wing these tests at all!)

And, I’ve got a bunch of other stuff going on right now that I really need to be at my best for – let’s face it, when one is dieting, one is often grumpy and irritable… and, I have to admit, I’m edgy when I’m dieting.

Part of the problem is that I think my hcg lost it’s potency while in the freezer over the past two months, and for the first time on protocol, I’ve been hungry and ready to gnaw my arm off. That’s no fun at all. Better to mix a new batch when I’m really ready to stick to it.

I am not unhappy with my progress since the 6th when I went on the VLCD (very low calorie diet) – despite a few slip-ups, I lost a few pounds, and I’m back to last dose weight from the first round at 163.6 today. I can’t complain.

I shared my decision on Facebook, and Nancy and Lara are going to jump on my journey when I’m back to it… It seems we all want to lose a similar amount… Should be fun!

YOUR TURN… Wanna join us in about 3 weeks, and get serious about some weight loss?

I thought I’d write about my gratitude list today. I haven’t done that in a while, and I have much to be thankful for…

I’m so grateful for:

A husband who supports my choices, no matter what they may be. This is especially the case with my career – without his support, there’s no way I could be looking forward to some awesome things coming up. He is doing exceptionally well with his career, and that allows me to not worry about our finances while I build my own career path.

My many new friends here in Calgary — I’ve met so many awesome people here, and they’ve all gone out of their way to make me feel like I’m special to them, as they are to me. Without them, Calgary wouldn’t feel like the home that it does now.

The many opportunities to grow in my chosen field. I’m thrilled with the potential, while being able to harness my passion for helping others in such a rewarding industry.

My health. I’ve experienced loss on a few occasions over the past several months, and their struggle with health made me realize just how lucky I am to feel good, and be active. My worries are pretty insignificant, compared to the worries of their loved ones who are grieving.

Time off! Barry and I are counting down to our family cruise in December — More on that in a future blog entry… But, I can’t wait to be enjoying the heat in the winter! Yay for vacations!

YOUR TURN: What are you grateful for, these days?

© 2012 Tanya (@NetChick). View orig post: http://netchick.net/2011/09/12/calgary-snow-approaches-winter/

Oh oh… It’s the first grey day here in Calgary in over a month, and it’s starting to remind me of the frigid temperatures that we experienced last winter. For. Months.

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve chosen to enjoy sun most of the Calgary winter over constant grey skies we got in Vancouver during the winter months — but that cold… I think it’s going to take me more than a single winter here to fully acclimatize to the difference in cities, weather-wise.

A big upgrade this year will be real winter clothing. Last year, I made do with my Vancouver “cool weather” jacket, and non-lined gloves. This year, while commuting, I’d literally get frostbitten if I tried to get by with an unlined wool coat while I awaited the C-Train’s arrival. (and we all know how very much I *heart* the C-Train!)

I guess as the days start to get cooler outside, I’ll plaster a smile on my face, and hope that it keeps my outlook positive as I try not to freeze to death — I now fully get what a Canadian Winter is supposed to be like. At least there’s sun most days, right?

Thankfully, we only have 77 more sleeps until Barry and I will get a sunny reprieve for three weeks while the winter storms blow in!

YOUR TURN: How do you keep positive when the weather outside gets frightful?

Hi guys! Guess what I have in my hot little hands? (okay… I’ll admit, they’re digital, but they’re sizzling!) Cirque Du Soleil tickets! …And I’m giving a pair away to one lucky winner!

I’m super stoked to be seeing this awesome show on opening weekend – Every single Cirque show I’ve seen (and I’ve seen many!) have all blown my mind. So. Much. Talent! I’m sure this Calgary performance will be just as amazing.

OVO is running in Calgary at the Stampede Grounds under the big tent from September 7th until October 9th, 2011, and tickets are going fast – but, even if you don’t win a pair of tickets (see below for details on how to win!) I’ve got a promo code for your Cirque Du Soleil tickets right here, giving you 40% off! Don’t miss out!

Here’s a bit about the show…

“OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects’ home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It’s love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual. OVO is overflowing with contrasts. The hidden, secret world at our feet is revealed as tender and torrid, noisy and quiet, peaceful and chaotic. And as the sun rises on a bright new day the vibrant cycle of insect life begins anew.”

SO… HOW DO YOU WIN TICKETS to the 8pm Calgary show of OVO on Saturday, September 10, 2011?!

This is the easiest random draw ever…

Just comment on this post from now, until opening day.. September 7th at 5pm MT – Tell me about your last Cirque experience (if none, that’s okay, too!) and you’ll be entered. And, if you spread the word, and one or more (no limit!) of your friends enters also (and shares that you sent them in their comment) you will both get an extra entry! If I can’t reach you by Noon MT on September 8th, I’ll draw another name.

Thanks for entering! The contest is over!

Barry was taking too long getting home, so I went next door and asked my neighbour to draw… Drum roll please… Al picked…

…HEATHER! You win!

UPDATE!!!!

Heather can’t go this Saturday, so rather than giving the tickets away, she asked me to draw another name… so… DRUM ROLL AGAIN!

Nancy came into town from Yellowknife, and although she actually needed to be in Edmonton for Tuesday, she make an extra trip down to see us for the weekend. It’s always great to see good friends, even if it’s only a short visit.

Barry and I managed to get the projector in the theatre mounted on Saturday morning (it’s been sitting on the floor forever) so the weekend heat didn’t phase us in the evening because we were able to enjoy a movie downstairs in the cool that is the basement. Phew, was it a hot one… Thank goodness for air conditioning!

Speaking of home improvement tasks, we actually got quite a bit of running around done before picking up Nancy at the Red Arrow station – new filters for the hot tub (yay!), and a new wireless N system I’ll set up tonight (despite the fact that I really should be studying for my WME exam coming up… what’s a couple of hours, right? I’m a procrastinator sometimes!).

Barry’s parents moved from Cold Lake this past weekend, too, so it was nice having them stay Thursday night and share in the excitement when they got their keys on Friday… Too bad I missed the moving part during the day on Friday (well, okay, not really… The moving part is best left to the men) but, I did see them after work, and share their excitement.

So, houseguests = good times. When are you joining us, next?

Hope and a positive outlook is everything to me.

After much discussion last night, Barry and I now have an updated gameplan and a bright outlook for the future.

Thanks everyone for all the thoughtful emails, Facebook messages, and texts. I’m sorry I have to be so vague on my blog, but I’m happy to share in person.

Maybe I’ll do a password protected post in the next few days. Stay tuned…

YOUR TURN: What are you looking forward to this weekend? Me? Nancy is coming into town, so I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with her!
