Isabelle, a virgin, propositions Thomas. But right before she beds him, she's overcome with a strange feeling that leads to both of them uncovering Thomas's dark and mysterious past.

006- The Pornographers

Yoshimoto Ogata believes it's his patriotic duty to provide smut to his fellow men. (He uses the profits from his 8mm films to support his lover and her two children.) Although never explicit, this movie contains intimations of incest, the exploitation of a mentally retarded girl and the creation of the perfect sex doll. Based on a scandalous novel, the film boldly investigates the relationship between sexual desire and one bizarre family.

Jeanne Moreau and Léna Skerla co-star in this critically acclaimed existential psychological drama from Louis Malle.

013- That Obscure Object of Desire

This Oscar-nominated erotic dark comedy was Luis Buñuel's final film. The story follows, in flashback, middle-aged Mathieu (Fernando Rey) and his obsession for the much younger, moody Conchita (played by both Carole Bouquet and Angela Molina). The two play a continuous tug-of-war with each other's desires, each trying to outlast the other at their own game.

014- Jean Cocteau's Orphic Trilogy: Disc 1: The Blood of a Poet

This disc includes the film The Blood of a Poet. Jean Cocteau attempts to portray the mind of a poet, with artist Lee Miller playing a reanimated statue and Enrique Rivero in the role of Cocteau. This disc features a meticulously restored version of the classic film and includes behind-the-scenes photographs, a documentary by Edgardo Cozarinsky, a1983 transcript of Cocteau's lecture, a screening and a 1946 filmography.

Julie Delpy stars in Krzysztof Kieslowski's dark comedy (the middle segment in his "three colors" trilogy) about the price of passion. Polish immigrant Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) is humiliated in a public courtroom by his wife (Delpy) during their divorce proceedings. Shamed and brokenhearted, he finds an ally in a fellow countryman. The two concoct a way back to post-Communist Poland, where Karol sets about rebuilding his life.

023- Red

Krzysztof Kieslowski strikes again with Red, the final film in his "three colors" trilogy. In this meditation on the need for passion and human connection, an accident brings together two very different people -- Valentine (Irene Jacob), a model, and Joseph (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a retired judge. Since love chooses to pair people at random, theirs becomes a fated, deeply improbable, but true romance.

024- Lars and the Real Girl

Ryan Gosling plays the title character in this oddball comedy about a delusional young man who buys a life-size sex doll over the Internet -- and then falls in love with her. When the besotted young man starts telling people that the doll is his girlfriend, his brother and sister-in-law decide it's time to intervene in this film co-starring Patricia Clarkson, Emily Mortimer, Kelli Garner and Paul Schneider.

025- The Passion of Joan of Arc

Widely considered director Carl Theodor Dreyer's finest achievement and one of the greatest movies of all time, this stunning emotional drama recounts the events surrounding Joan of Arc's 1431 heresy trial, burning at the stake and subsequent martyrdom. Maria Falconetti turns in a haunting performance as the young French saint. The film's original version, thought to have been lost to fire, was miraculously found in perfect condition in 1981.

026- Monster

Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron, in an Oscar-winning performance) faced difficult odds early in life, abusing drugs and becoming a prostitute (and pregnant) by the age of 13. Wuornos moved from Michigan to Florida where she continued to ply her "trade," specializing in a clientele consisting mainly of truck drivers. It was during that time that she began murdering any "John" who tried to rape her. Christina Ricci co-stars in this true story.

027- Joy House

Hiding out in a Monte Carlo mansion to escape the wrath of his girlfriend's mobster husband turns out to be a faulty strategy for a con man (Alain Delon) on the run. Once inside, he becomes the object of two women's desperate desires. One is an older female who says she's married but is recently widowed (Lola Albright) with a boyfriend (Robert Oumansky) on the side; the other is her younger niece (Jane Fonda), who has her own agenda.

028- L'Eclisse

Michelangelo Antonioni's trilogy ends with this haunting, starkly modern meditation on love. Tracing the trajectory of one relationship, L'Eclisse (aka The Eclipse) follows the exploits of a woman (Monica Vitti) who craves deep and abiding affection. Convinced that the man she's with (Francisco Rabal) can't give her what she needs, she leaves him, only to begin an affair with another (Alain Delon). But their trysts threaten to engulf them all.

029- 8 1/2

Dog-tired movie director Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) retreats to thoughts of yesteryear when his producers, his wife (Anouk Aimee) and his mistress (Sandra Milo) all pressure him to start making another movie. 037- Gardens of the Night

Nominated for a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, this meditation on the effects of war from director Aleksandr Sokurov follows an elderly woman named Alexandra (Galina Vishnevskaya) as she travels to Chechnya to visit a grandson posted there. As seen through Alexandra's eyes, the barracks and its inhabitants reveal the staggering costs -- both human and financial -- of endless war.

042- The BRD Trilogy: Veronika Voss

Rosel Zech plays a dissipated 1940s German movie star who, 10 years after the war, has become a morphine addict. Her claim to fame: She used to be a close, personal friend of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. The third in a trilogy of films from director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, frequently grouped with The Marriage of Maria Braun and Lola due to the shared theme of women's experiences with loss and survival in postwar Germany.

043- Gerry

Gus Van Sant directed this groundbreaking film in which two men (Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, who also co-wrote the script with Van Sant), each calling the other "Gerry," embark on a journey into the desert. When they get stranded there, it's a race to find their way out. 044- Distant

Mahmut (Muzzafer Özdemir), a divorced, hermit-like photographer, lets his dopey cousin Yusuf (Mehmet Emin Toprak) live with him for a while in Istanbul while Yusuf looks for a job so he can support his family in their native Turkish village. The distance -- and silence -- between the two lonely, depressed men soon grows to intolerance, on Mahmut's part, of the chaos Yusuf has brought into his life. Nuri Bilge Ceylan directs this intimate drama.

045- Climates

Isa is a college professor in a stormy relationship with television producer Bahar. They've been together for years, but on a seaside vacation with friends, tensions rise, and Bahar ends their romance and returns to Istanbul alone. Ambivalence haunts the separated lovers as they decide whether to reconcile. Nuri Bilge Ceylan is writer, director and star of the torrid romance, while his real-life wife, Ebru Ceylan, portrays Bahar.

046- Gods of the Plague

Director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's sequel to his own Love Is Colder Than Death finds Franz (Harry Baer) just released from prison and in fast cahoots with his brother's murderer (Gunther Kaufmann). While the pair plans a robbery of a supermarket, Franz rekindles an old flame (Hanna Schygulla) and lights several new ones. Munich's directionless, grim youth culture is the focus of this bleak crime drama by the acclaimed German auteur.

047- Of Time and the City

Filmmaker Terence Davies takes a nostalgic look at his birthplace of Liverpool, England, and explores the phenomenon of childhood memories unrequited by time and progress in this film essay. In addition to serving as an artistic and poetic ode to a Liverpool gone by, the film offers an inimitable perspective of the city through a mixture of archive footage and new shots, evocative music and Davies' poetry-like narration.

048- Frozen River

On a Mohawk reservation on the Canadian border, Ray Eddy (Melissa Leo, in an Oscar-nominated turn) teams with widowed tribe member Lila Littlewolf (Misty Upham) to smuggle illegal immigrants into the United States. Though the work provides the women with much-needed money, each trip puts them in peril. Charlie McDermott and Michael O'Keefe also star in this riveting drama nominated for multiple Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature.

049- Chronicle of a Disappearance

In this award-winning political satire, filmmaker Elia Suleiman plays himself, a young man returning to his Palestinian homeland after spending more than a decade studying film in New York. He documents his return to his roots by recording his wanderings through Nazareth and Jerusalem. The resulting work is a series of thought-provoking vignettes expressing Suleiman's view of contemporary Israeli-Arab life -- and it's not a pretty picture.

050- La Terre

Emile Zola's landmark novel about family greed, brutality and deceit is transferred powerfully to the silent screen. Pere Fouan divides his land equitably between his two conniving sons, but his generosity is rewarded with treachery. The sons hatch an insidious plot against their father, and when neighbor Françoise (Germaine Rouer) uncovers their plans, she, too, falls victim to their revenge.

051- Ace in the Hole

Fired from a number of big-city papers, reporter Charles Tatum (Kirk Douglas) tries to reestablish himself in New Mexico. When a local store owner is trapped in a cave-in, Tatum turns the victim's misfortune into a media frenzy to further his own career. A local sheriff agrees to help prolong the rescue efforts, thereby helping build up the story. This classic film has been touted as director Billy Wilder's sharpest, most uncompromising piece of work.

052- Hell in the Pacific

Marooned on a deserted Pacific island during World War II, American Lee Marvin and Japanese officer Toshirô Mifune are warriors without weapons. With little dialogue to fall back on, director John Boorman conjures a fascinating dynamic between sworn enemies who have more in common than they realize. Included is the original (and vastly superior) ending as a bonus feature.

But their inability to give her love and support causes a mental breakdown that leads to a hallucinogenic episode where Karin envisions God as a spider. 059- The Silence

Three passengers travel through a foreign country on the brink of war. Taking ill, Esther checks into a hotel room, with her sister Anna and Anna's son, Johan, occupying the adjoining suite. 060- Sisters

He sleeps with a prostitute (Marie Dubois), seduces a chambermaid (Anna Karina) and beds a married woman (Jane Fonda) before coming full circle, returning to tryst with the streetwalker once more. Vadim and Fonda would later continue their collaboration in the sexy space adventure Barbarella.

069- Times and Winds

In rural Turkey, three friends entering adolescence share the struggles of growing up. The son of the local imam, Ömer (Özkan Özen) sees a callous side of his father that the community does not. Yakup's (Ali Bey Kayali) boyhood crush on his teacher is shattered when he catches his own father spying on her. And Yildiz (Elit Iscan) is disturbed by the sight of her parents making love. Reha Erdem writes and directs this powerful, award-winning film.

070- The Straight Story

When Iowa farmer Alvin Straight's brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), falls ill, Alvin pledges to go to Lyle's side despite being unable to drive and unwilling to accept help. With a tent to sleep under, a riding lawnmower for transportation and unshakable determination, Alvin (Oscar nominee Richard Farnsworth) sets out to cover the 300 miles to his brother's house in a weeks-long journey of healing and remembrance.

071- Domestic Violence

By shadowing residents of The Spring in Tampa, Fla. -- the state's largest shelter for battered women and their children -- acclaimed documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman sheds light on domestic violence and reveals the complications that make it such a difficult problem to solve. Though painful to watch, Wiseman's gripping film allows each victim to share her story in a way that's both brutally honest and unspeakably horrific.

072- Frownland

Social misfit and self-labeled "troll from under the bridge" Keith Sontag (Dore Mann) lives a sad and lonely existence in this disturbing black comedy -- an Independent Spirit Award nominee -- from director Ronald Bronstein. When he's not trying to sell coupons door-to-door, Keith struggles with evicting his roommate from their seedy apartment, helping a friend who's suicidal and just getting by as an outsider in the cruel city.

073- The Silent World

Louis Malle co-directed this Oscar-winning documentary with famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau. Featuring stunning underwater photography, the film follows Cousteau and his crew as they go on an exploratory expedition to map the ocean floor using advanced sonar. In addition to winning the Best Documentary Oscar, The Silent World won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and a Best Foreign Film Award from the National Board of Review.

074- Ken Park

This disturbing and highly controversial film from director Larry Clark (Kids) focuses on four adolescents whose lives are beyond dysfunctional. There's Tate, a sociopath and sexual asphyxiation freak who lives with his adoptive grandparents; Shawn, who's having sex with his girlfriend's mother; Claude, a skateboarder whose macho father physically abuses him; and Peaches, a nymphomaniac who rebels against her father's strict religious upbringing.

075- Silent Light

Johan (Cornelio Wall Fehr), a Mennonite living in Mexico, is tormented with guilt over his extramarital affair with Marianne (Maria Pankratz). His father (Peter Wall), best friend (Jacobo Klassen) and wife (Miriam Toews) know the truth, but Johan's suffering has to do with his faith, which he can't reconcile with his deeds. Director Carlos Reygadas's powerful drama won the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Independent Spirit Awards.

076- Tulpan

Freshly discharged from the Russian navy, young Asa (Askhat Kuchencherekov) returns to the arid Kazakh steppe to find a bride and become a shepherd. But his plans go awry when Tulpan, the only eligible bachelorette around, rejects him because his ears are too big. What's more, Asa turns out to be a lousy shepherd. Can his persistence win Tulpan's love, the respect of his flock and the life he dreams of? Documentarian Sergei Dvortsevoy directs.

077- The Crowd

Acclaimed director King Vidor won an Oscar nomination for directing this silent classic, which highlights the plight of working men and women in urban America. Born on July 4, 1900, John Sims (James Murray) always believed he was destined for greatness. But as his life unfolds, he faces mind-numbing work, difficult relationships, death and his own very ordinary life. Time magazine named this film one of its "All-Time 100 Movies."

078- Nights and Weekends

Joe Swanberg and Greta Gerwig (collaborators on the indie fave Hannah Takes the Stairs) write, direct and star in this penetrating character study about a couple dealing with the ups and downs of maintaining a long-distance relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, James and Mattie are forced to face the possibility that traveling back and forth between New York and Chicago may ultimately spell the demise of their relationship.

079- Exodus

Find a comfy seat for this epic (nearly 4-hour) tale about the founding of Israel. Directed by Otto Preminger and starring Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Lee J. Cobb and Sal Mineo, Exodus is based on the Leon Uris novel of the same name. Israeli resistance fighter Newman attempts to bring 600 European Jews from British-blockaded Cyprus into newly partitioned Palestine after World War II.

080- Running Stumbled

Turning his lens on a man he hasn't seen in decades, John Maringouin shows up at his dad's home on Easter and starts filming. The result is this film about the relationship between Maringouin's father (an artist and ex-pimp) and his common-law wife. Maringouin (who received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for his work) provides a hallucinogenic glimpse into a nightmarish landscape of drugs, dementia and bitter verbal battles.

081- Destricted

By packing a string of erotic shorts into one volume, Destricted removes a bit of the taboo surrounding pornography. Among the selections are director Matthew Barney's "Hoist," in which a man gets intimate with a rotating driveshaft, and filmmaker Richard Prince's "House Call," a salute to 1970s cinema. Also included is director Larry Clark's "Impaled," in which he auditions young bucks for a porn flick and lets them choose their on-screen mates.

082- 24 City

From director Zhang Ke Jia comes this drama about changing times in Chengdu, China, where state-owned factory 420 is closed by the government to make way for a high-end apartment complex called 24 City. The film tells the story through the lens of several distinctive characters, from factory workers to executives to the newly monied, who are all affected in different ways by the newfound dynamism and economic growth of their nation.

083- Examined Life

Filmmaker Astra Taylor explores the application of contemporary philosophy to everyday life by speaking with leading philosophers in settings that underscore the tangible relevance of their theories. Taylor's subjects include Princeton University professor Peter Singer who discusses the ethics of consumption -- while strolling amid the sumptuous luxury of Fifth Avenue. Taylor also interviews Cornel West, Michael Hardt, Judith Butler and others.

084- Floundering

John (James LeGros) lives in beautiful Venice Beach, but finds little to appreciate in his surroundings. His life is full of bizarre friends, sweaty sex, pistol-welding gangsters, bungling bureaucrats, police fanatics, revolutionaries and weirdos. All John wants is a little peace of mind and a little piece of the action, but it doesn't seem to come easily. This touching drama from internationally acclaimed writer-director Olivier Assayas stars Juliette Binoche, Charles Berling and Jérémie Renier as the three siblings forced to ponder their legacy and identity.

087- Lumiere and Company

To honor the 100th anniversary of motion pictures, 40 international directors create their own mini-movies in this French documentary. The weapon of choice for each is a replica of the camera used by the pioneer Lumiere brothers in 1895; each short is a single take running just under a minute (the limit of one roll of film at the time). Spike Lee, Zhang Yimou, David Lynch and Wim Wenders are among those taking part in this unique experiment.

088- Blank City

Filmmaker Celine Danhier directs this lively documentary that retraces the birth of the underground film movement in New York in the early 1980s, spurred by the work of artists like Richard Kern, Casandra Stark and John Waters. As part of what author and filmmaker Nick Zedd coined the Cinema of Transgression, these low-budget films were noted for being chock-full of explicit sex, gratuitous violence and dark humor.

089- Handsome Harry

For many years, small-town resident Harry Sweeney (Jamey Sheridan) has avoided confronting painful memories from his past. But when his best friend becomes seriously ill, Harry builds up enough courage to explore long-hidden secrets and uncover his true identity. Directed by Bette Gordon, this character-driven drama boasts a strong ensemble cast that features Steve Buscemi, Aidan Quinn, John Savage and Campbell Scott.

090- A Prophet

After refusing to snitch, 18-year-old Arab Malik (Tahar Rahim) is thrown into a French prison, where the Corsican mafia rules with a firm fist. The obedient newcomer slowly rises through the organization's ranks but soon begins to double-cross his superiors. French director Jacques Audiard's gritty follow-up to his 2005 gem The Beat My Heart Skipped screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.

092- The Hurt Locker

Turner (Barlow Jacobs) comes to work in New Orleans, sifting through insurance claims in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He turns a blind eye to the people around him until he meets Nixon (Eddie Rouse), whose simple request in finding his daughter's lost dog will change how both men think of strangers, the disaster and each other. This story of empathy and redemption was filmed on location amid the wreckage of the storm-ravaged city.

Director and provocateur David Lynch ("Twin Peaks," Mulholland Drive) doles out his trademark style -- albeit in smaller doses -- with this collection of seven short films that were once available only to members of his personal Web site. Touching on drama, comedy, narrative and horror, the collection also includes experiments with an intervalometer camera, plus a 20-minute session with Lynch answering questions from Web site members.
