If you want to create a good scenery, a lot of photo combinations are unavoidable. Therefore, good planning for preparing your sources and background design are required. This tutorial will show you how to form a tank and arrange a soldier together.

Step 1

Preparing the source

All you need to do is selecting good stock pictures, doing experiment on using Free Transform Tool and Adjustment layers to set the mood and lightning. Here are the stocks needed to manipulate the thing I called machine:

Create a new white document of 1200 pxl wide and 900 pxl high on photoshop (Ctrl+N). Open the stock picture of an old gun on the document.

We will extract the picture from its background. To achieve this, we will use Pen Tool. Activate the pen tool in the tool panel. Start tracing the picture with the pen tool by clicking every edge of the picture to make anchor point:

Keep on clicking to trace the picture until the path is closed which is indicated by thin line around the traced picture:

When the path is closed, right click on the path to show the path command option box. Choose Make Selection. This Make Selection option will change the path into selection. Hit Shift+Ctrl+I to inverse the selection and then hit Del to delete the background:

Open the other stock picture of an old rusty car:

Just extract the picture with Pen Tool just like the same way in extracting the old gun picture. Here is the result:

Now there are two extracted picture on the document. Make sure to place the old car picture behind the old gun picture. This means that the layer of the old car picture is underneath the layer of the old gun in the Layer Panel. Select the old car layer. Now hit Ctrl+T to activate Free Transform Tool which is indicated by some transforming points around the selected picture:

When the free transform tool is activated, right click on the document to show the command option box. Choose Perspective. Click and drag the lowest left corner point down. Refer to the old gun picture as reference to determine the perspective of the old car. Technically, the image will look like the one on the illustration below :

Distort the picture a bit to get the fit result:

Finally, erase the unnecessary parts of the car. Here is the result I created:

Next is adding rear wheel. What you need to do are:
1. Take pen tool again in the tool panel. Trace the left front wheel by clicking to make path
around the wheel until the path is closed.
2. Right click on the document to show the path command options. Choose make selection.
3. When the wheel is selected, hit Ctrl+J to duplicate it into a new single layer.
4. Finally, move (hit V to activate the Move Tool) the duplication to rear side of the machine. Make sure to place this duplicated wheel layer below the main body layer in the layer panel.

Do the same way to add the other rear wheel:

From this step on, we will add rims for the wheel. We will manipulate the rims from this image of a gear. Since the gear is in png formatted file, we will simply copy-paste the image to the document. We do not need to be got bother by extracting because the image itself has already got transparent background.

Step 15

Place the rim ( I call the part rim ) above the wheel. Hit Ctrl+T to activate the Free Transform Tool again:

Transform the rim to fit the perspective of the wheel:

Distort the rim to get the best result:

Duplicate (Ctrl+J) the rim and place the duplication on the rear wheel:

We have completed parts of the machine ( I call this thing machine ). Next, we will decorate the look of thee machine by adding some metal textures. I used this image for this purpose:

Open the texture on the document. With Free Transform Tool, arrange the perspective of this texture to fit the entire image:

Duplicate the texture as needed. Scale and place the duplications where needed. Remember to mask some unneeded parts of the duplications. I kept the blending of the duplication layers in normal at 100% opacity. Please see the illustration picture as the inspiration of the result I created. Do not stick to get exactly the same result as the one I created. In this part we can try to create different texture shapes.

Step 22

If we have found the best shape, select all the texture layers and group them (Ctrl+G). Give this group layer a layer mask. Mask the lines on the car. Please see the illustration picture:

Finally, to complete the machine, I selected and duplicated the part between the front wheels and add the duplicated part to the rear wheels. Please refer back to previous step 12 on how to do this.

Here is the final result I created after adding a machine gun which was cut out from the other provided stock image. Please refer the previous step to see how to use pen tool to cut the machine gun and how to transform the cut out to fit the perspective.

Create another new document of 1200 pxl wide and 900 pxl high. Open the stock picture. We will create the background for the scene. After opening the stock picture, flip it horizontally. Hit Ctrl+T to activate the free transform tool again. There will be a manu bar for the tool above the document. Click the chain icon and put the cursor near the icon, when the pointing hand icon comes up, click and drag to the right to scale the picture up. See the result I created:

Open the cracked soil picture on the document. Transform the picture to get the best result needed:

To blend the soil well into the scene, give this soil layer a layer mask and mask the upper part of it. Then reduce its opacity a bit to 60%. Next is create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N). On this new layer, make a selection on the lower part of the document. We will fill this selection with Gradient. Set the color of the foreground to white and the background to #0b5f04. Take Gradient tool. Make sure to choose Linear Gradient. Finally create gradient on the selection. Give this layer a layer mask and with soft round brush, masked the top edge of the gradient. Set the blending of this gradient layer to Soft Light at 55% opacity.

Step 28

Create another new layer. Make a selection on the lower part of the document and fill the selection with another gradient. For this gradient, set the foreground color to white and the background to #021701. Mask the top edge and set this gradient layer to Soft Light at 100% opacity.

Step 29

In this step, we will add cloud to the scene. Open the other stock picture. Scale the picture to fit the canvas. Mask the lower part of the image. To match the color of this cloud to its surrounding, we will add it color adjustments. Firstly, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color balance. Then, give the other adjustment layer: Hue/Saturation. ( please see the illustration picture for the settings). Make sure to create clipping masks for these adjustment layers. Mask a little bit the hue/saturation layer on the cloud part. Finally, set the blending of the color balance layer to Multiply at 100% opacity and the hue/saturation to Screen at 100% opacity.

Step 30

After finishing the background, copy – paste the ‘machine’ to the canvas:

Next, open the soldier picture. Extract the soldier from its background. Scale and place it on the canvas:

Proceed to add the child to the canvas. Scale and place the child in front of the soldier’s right arm. Give this child layer a layer mask and mask part of the child to make it looks as if she were in the soldier’s arm. Finally, add the cat to the scene.

Step 33

In this step we will treat the look of the child. We have to make as if she were desperate. Duplicate the child layer. Go to Filter > Others > High Pass. Take Burn Tool in the tool panel. With soft round brush at low opacity (10-20%), stroke the areas on the face, legs and the other skin. Finally, set this high pass layer to Overlay at 100% opacity.

Step 34

Do the same way as the previous step for the soldier.

Step 35

Finally, to set the entire tone of the scene, I decided to give it another adjustment layer: Hue/Saturation above all the other layers.

We will add some destroyed building to the scene. Open the building picture on the canvas. Go to Image > Adjustment > Desaturate. With the building layer still selected, go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Option. See the illustration picture to see the setting for the blending option.

Step 37

Mask unnecessary part of the building. Used scatter brush to create the effect of destruction on the building.

Step 38

Scale and place the building on the canvas. Give this building Gaussian blur a bit. Finally add this layer new adjustment layers: Brightness/Contrast and Color Balance. Make sure to create these adjustment layers clipping masks.

Step 39

To complete the composition, we will add the other building. Open the ruin city stock picture. Flip it horizontally. Scale and place as farer building. Duplicate this layer. Arrange the duplication pictures in the position needed to complete the composition. Give them Gaussian Blur to set the depth of the image.

Step 40

Create a new layer. Fill this layer with linear gradient of #032501 to white. Then, mask lower part of the gradient layer. Finally, set this gradient layer to Soft Light at 45% opacity.

Step 41

Create the other two adjustment layers above all the other layers. First, add Gradient Map, mask some parts of this gradient map layer and then set it to Multiply blending at 100% opacity. Next, give Photo Filter. Mask this layer as well on some part and set its blending to normal at 40% opacity.

Step 42

Hit Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E to stamp the visible layer. There will be a single layer above all the other layers. Desaturate this layer and give it Gaussian Blur with radius at 7 pixels. Set this layer to Soft Light at 25% opacity. Next, create another new layer. Take Brush Tool. Choose a very soft brush at 20 opacity. With black color, stroke distracting areas on the scene ( marked in yellow). Please see the illustration image.

Step 43

The image is a bit dark. We will add another adjustment layer: Brightness/Contrast to the scene. Finally, hit Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E to stamp again all the visible layers. Give this stamped layer High Pass filter at radius 7% to sharpen the image. Mask the area of the buildings. Set this layer to Soft Light at 100% opacity.

Step 44

Finally, to complete this work, on a new layer I stroked a black colored soft brush at 15-20% opacity on the areas under the machine and the soldier to define more shadow. So here is the final result I created:

Or….optionally, to set more dramatic scene, I tried to add rain on the picture. I also used different rims for the wheels:

A nice ice cube is not easy to create, due to its condition and surface are difficult to be copied. However, applying Photoshop setting can allow you to form the ice cube. Then, you can arrange your object to be inside the cube, such as animal or any fruits.

• Create a new document in Photoshop – 800 * 600px, 72 px/inch.
• Unlock background layer and apply following layer style effects to it.

• Choose Rounded Rectangle Tool with Radius 10px and create square around 200x200px in Shape Layers mode. We will use this shape to create 3D cube with rounded and smooth edges and corners. Do not rasterize created shape.

• Open 3D Tools palette. And create a new 3D object from the rounded rectangular shape .

• You will see following message, just click “Yes”.

• Then apply 3D settings in the Repousse window, rotate created shape using “Rotate The Mesh” tool to change perspective position.

• Apply ice texture to this shape.

• Here you may find settings for the Front Inflation Material.

• Right click Diffuse icon and choose “Edit Properties” and change texture position .

• Settings for the front Bevel Material, use the same ice texture for Diffuse and Bump parameters.

• But change Texture Properties:

• Settings for the Extrusion Material:

• Edit Texture Properties like on the screen shot below (don’t pay attention to back side materials settings in this shape position):

• Open 3D lights settings palette and create lights like on the screen shot. In order to add a new light,  click the Create A New Light button , and choose the light type from the drop down menu.  Find Light position settings in the top part of screen shot or apply your own by rotating 3D Axis guide. To view Axis guide click the Toggle icon  and select 3D Axis.

• Duplicate 3D shape and change texture settings for the duplicated materials.

• Use another texture for this shape. Here is the list of new materials parameters:

• Apply following Texture Properties for the Front Inflation Material(the same settings for the both of Opacity and Bump parameters):

• Front Bevel Material settings:

• Extrusion Material settings:

• This shape has some transparent areas because of black and white spots texture for the Opacity Parameter. That’s why we need to set back side materials for this shape. Make them just invisible, apply Opacity = 0% to Back Bevel Material and Back Inflation Material.

• Adjust lights settings:

• Return to the layers palette and apply Overlay Blending Mode to the new ice texture 3D shape.

• Apply “Ray Traced Final” Quality for both of 3D shapes.

• You should have similar result after rendering:

• Group 3d shapes and duplicate the group. Make group with the original 3D layers invisible(we will use original 3D shape in future steps to create reflection)and create Smart Object from the duplicated group – right click to the group and choose “Convert to Smart Object”. Correct Hue/Saturation settings for this shape a bit(click to add Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, right click to this layer and choose “Create Clipping Mask”)
• Also add “Smart Sharpen” filter effect – Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen. You may find settings for the Hue/Saturation and Smart Sharpen filter on the last screen shots.

• Rasterize Smart object ice cube layer and merge it with Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Then apply Liquify filter to it, Filter > Liquify. Deform cube straight lines with Forward Warp Tool to create more natural ice cube shape:

• Duplicate deformed ice shape, apply Flip Vertical transformation to the duplicate – Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical. Then choose Eraser Tool and erase bottom edge, just like on the example below:

• Choose Polygonal Lasso Tool and select one of the edges.

• Continue clicking to set endpoints for subsequent segments.

• Cut out selected part of ice shape and paste it into a new layer.
• Also you may see moved original 3D layer. Return to the group with original 3D layers and select one of 3D layers. Then choose “Drag the 3D Object” Tool and move the shape down just like on the screen shot. We will use this shape as a reflection guideway.

• You should have edges for reflection in the different layers. Choose right edge and move it down below the deformed ice cube shape, then go to Edit > Transform > Distort. Drag corner points to align left edge with left edge of 3D shape. Try to line up ice texture(look at marked area)

• Repeat the same action with the another edge.

• Make helper 3D layer invisible again. Merge transformed reflection layers. Set Opacity around 45%.
• Add layer mask to this layer, fill the bottom part of Layer Mask with black and white gradient to create fading effect.
• Create Levels Adjustment clipping mask for the reflection layer, use settings from the second screen shot.

• Create a small dark reflection(selected area on the screen shot).
  • Duplicate deformed ice layer.
  • Place duplicated layer below the original.
  • move it down on 5-6 px.
  • Apply Multiply Blending Mode and Opacity 75%.
  • Erase marked area above the bottom of ice cube edges.

• Then Apply Gaussian Blur filter – 1px. Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

• Separate cherry from the white background and insert it to the Photoshop file.
• Cut out selected part of the cherry image and paste it into a new layer.

• Select bottom part of the cherry.
• Go to Ice layer and copy selected part.
• Paste copied ice area above cherry layer, apply Screen Blending Mode and opacity 92%.
• Then add levels adjustments, you may use adjustment layer as in several previous examples or just go to the Image > Adjustments > Levels, Check out levels settings on the second screen shot.

• Add red reflection to the ice shape, add Inner shadow layer style effect.

• Group following 3 layers: bottom part of cherry, top part and ice layer above cherry.
• Duplicate created group and merge it.
• Apply Flip Vertical transformation to merged group. Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical.
• Place cherry reflection layer below Ice shape layer, just like on the screen shot below:

• Load selection for the ice cube shape.

• Go to cherry reflection layer and cut out selected area.
• Then paste it into a new layer above Ice cube. Apply Inner shadow layer style effect to this small reflection piece and Opacity – 75%.

• Return to the reflection layer below of ice shape.
• Apply Multiply Blending mode to it and Opacity 35%.
• Add Layer Mask to this layer and fill bottom part of the Mask with linear Black and White gradient.

• Group cherry and Ice cube layers above reflection, duplicate the group and merge it – Group 4 copy 7 on the screen shot below. We will use this merged copy to create shadow effect.

• Go to Image > Adjustments > Black and white, choose Default preset.

• Go to Edit > Transform > Distort transform. Transform black&white shape just like in the screen shot below, apply Blending Mode to shadow layer.

• move shadow layer below ice cube layers. Erase left corner(marked on the screen shot)

• Touch top part of shadow wit large soft Eraser Tool to create fading shadow effect.

• Apply Gaussian Blur filter to this layer:

And here is result!

You can spend few minutes to achieve a nice silver text effect. It is mainly created using “layer style” function inside Photoshop Settings. At the end, you can design a simple dark background to match with the text.

Follow this step by step tutorial to create a realistic pewter style metal text effect in Photoshop. The best part is it’s really easy! Just a couple of Photoshop layer styles is all it takes to create the basic effect, with a subtle tweak or two to perfect the lighting to maximise the realism.

This style of embossed text is similar to old pewter badges and emblems, which makes it perfect for any kind of old-world medieval design. In Photoshop the effect is created just using the Bevel & Emboss and Satin features, but we’ll be creating this exact design as part of the complete tutorial.

Open up Photoshop and create a document with a black background. Enter your wording of choice using a suitable font. Here I’m going with the old-world theme with the cool free font named Sorts Mill Goudy.

Double click the text layer in the layers palette to open up the Layer Style window. The main metal effect is created using the Bevel & Emboss feature. Change the Technique to Chisel Hard to begin.

Adjust the sliders for the Size and Depth to max out the bevel effect. The actual figures required will depend on the size of your document, but make adjustments while the Preview option is checked. Reduce the highlights and shadows at the bottom of the window to 60-80% opacity.

The effect looks somewhat realistic with just a Bevel & Emboss effect, but an addition of a Satin overlay really helps add extra realism with more highlights/shadows. Change the colour to a dark grey then adjust the angle to 27 degrees. Move the Distance and Size sliders to 12px and 24px, then change the Contour preset to the thumbnail with two peaks. Head back to the Opacity slider to tone down the effect until it blends nicely, 60% should do!

That’s the basic pewter style metal text effect complete. This tutorial would be a little short if I stopped here, so let’s finish off the overall design with some cool textures and lighting effects.

Open up a subtle grunge texture from LostandTaken.com and paste it into the document. Press CMD+I to invert the image then reduce the opacity to 70%.

On a new layer dab a spot of light blue using a large soft brush. Change this layer’s blending mode to Overlay and set the opacity to 50%.

Repeat the process, but with a darker blue and a white spot on two more layers. Change these layers to Soft Light at 50% and 100% respectively.

CMD-Click the thumbnail of the original text layer to load its selection, then fill this selection with black on a new layer.

Press CMD+T to Transform and squash the black filled text from the top until it appears reflected on the underside of the metal text. Right click and select Perspective then pull out a side handle to flare out the shape.

Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and give the black text layer blurring of 10px to give the impression of a shadow.

Make any final alignments and adjustments to the shadow then drop its opacity to around 50%.

Elsewhere on the document add a spot of white using a small soft brush, then transform and squash the shape down to just 1px in height.

Hold ALT and press the up cursor key to make a copy, then CMD+T and rotate by 90 degrees.

Finish off this little specular highlight flare with another small white spot in the centre and merge all the layers together.

Rotate and position the highlight over the text to finish off the shiny pewter style metal text effect.

Many of Gormley’s components are made of fuzy, mathematical patterns that incredibly type familiar people results in different opportunities. The artisan uses his own human body as a referrals for building the life-size, and sometimes larger-than-life, statues. There is currently a major display of Gormley’s operates on display at The State Hermitage Art gallery in St. Petersburg, Italy. The display, called Still Standing: A Modern Mediation in the Traditional Collection, will run until Earnings 15, 2012.
