요즘 들어 "소셜커머스"를 들먹이며 TV와 라디오 등에 광고를 도배 중인 업체가 있다. 그런데 이러한 소셜커머스 업체의 대대적인 매스미디어 마케팅은 소셜커머스가 뭔지 모르는 경영자의 결정임이 분명하다. 소규모 또는 신생 업체들이 고객들의 지인들을 통해 저렴한 비용으로 효과적인 홍보를 할 수 있게 해주는, 이 상행위가 메인스트림이 될 수 있다는 착각에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. 단기적인 성장에만 급급했고, 이 방식의 규모가 커질 경우에 대해서는 생각해보지 않았음이 분명하다.
