This week’s Squee Wednesday is all about wooden and cardboard items – from wooden bow ties, wooden whale shaped desktop belongings holder to the cardboard foosball table. In order to break that wooden-cardboard harmony, we added an interesting bike lightning and the press made out of mason jars!

Wooden Bow Ties

Oh, what a hipster must-have! We just love trendy blue checkered centerpiece along with the striking grain and color of the walnut – it will surely add that extra dose of dandy to every outfit. Great!

Squee

Revolights

There will be no darkness with Revolights! This bike lighting system consists of two narrow rings of LEDs that mount directly to each wheel using a series of clips and ring spacers. The batteries are slim and lightweight, and can be charged via USB. The interesting part is an integrated accelerometer that provides speed and orientation data to the rings. This allows the LEDs to illuminate only when oriented at the front or rear of the bicycle. Magic!

Squee

Kartoni Foosball Table

If you order this item, all of the required parts will be delivered in a cardboard box, of course! The items will be folded and assembled in just a few minutes. The construction is easy and works without glue or screws. No additional tools are required. Additional features include built-in speaker for iPhone and cup holder. Party for the whole family or the office!

Squee

Wood Whale

The Wood Whale holds all of your desktop belongings so they don't stray. Pens in the spout, phone in the mouth, letters in the tail. Remember, each Wood Whale is hand-crafted in Michigan using reclaimed or sustainably farmed wood, so, like the real ones, no two whales are alike, as they are handmade and crafted from various wood pieces.

Squee

The Portland Press

The typical French press is still assembled from plastic and delicate glass in an overseas factory, but Bryan and Rob want to improve your coffee making experience with quality and materials that you can relate to. That's why they are introducing the Portland Press made out of traditional American materials – wood, glass, steel and wool. And it looks great, too!

After Bob Rosenschein, Jim Connor held a lecture at the CEED Conference. Connor has been involved in software applications addressing the capital markets for the past 20 years in multiple roles. He has been a CEO, CFO, Treasurer and angel investor and today serves as a Board Director and Treasurer of the Sand Hill Angels, is a Board Director of Liftopia, First Focus Learning Systems, Tabtor, Inc. and the Angel Capital Association (ACA). He talked more about his path from an entrepreneur to the investor, gave a few advices about relations with the investors, but named reasons why someone should become an investor.

He opened his lecture with these words:

World is a global marketplace. We are changing the world in microlevels, and there is a lot of movement.

But, what were Connor’s microlovels? He founded a company named SymPro, which he sold later to JPMorgan. But, that process wasn’t easy or short. He used to work at Xerox Computer Services, where his fascination with PC started. But his department was terminated, so he started reselling Accounting software on PC. They were early adopters of Novell network & Connectivity. For several years things were going well and he invested almost everything he had in new offices. But, the value proposition evaporated and PC became a commodity. That is why they had to pivot to software in order to survive. They slowly rebuilt the business by one customer at a time. They had a challenge from VC funded competitor, but they managed to become profitable in 1998 and by 2001 they were named Top Software in the Portfolio management sector for their industry. Soon the offer from JPMorgan followed.

Entrepreneur Starter Kit

You need to be good at something.

Patience & Perseverance, iteration is good.

Develop a viable business model, very important, confirm that the “must have” from “nice to have”.

Develop customers, cash flow.

Find an investor who has a business interest in the area of your expertise or business focus.

He added that the least productive way of finding an investor is sending a whole business plan.

If I was in your shoes today, I'd find connections with the investor. Common interest. People we both know. I would ask them to make an introduction. It’s like dating – you might have to go through 50 or 60 people, but eventually you will find someone with the same chemistry.

What are investor deal killers?

Jim pointed out things that might put off investors from you and your business. That is the lack of integrity; appearing defensive; inadequate justification value; not know the competition; not understanding the financial projections and poor negotiating skills.

For example, saying that you have no competition is like keeping head in the sand. Poor negotiating skills might be a sign immaturity or lack of ego control.

Key skills

There are a few important skills every entrepreneur needs to have in order to succeed. You need to be able to recruit people smarter than you. Being the best at one product of service and limiting geographical coverage. Being able to help low performers move on to another job or career.

You need to realize that you are not in a popularity contest – sometimes you need to make unpopular decisions. But never let them see you sweat. Whenever possible, have time on your side.

Jim is an investor today and he invites everyone that succeeded in their business to do the same. As he says:

Join the investor club, next best thing to being a rock star!

He considers that investments will advance investor’s brand. It will help him in building additional new businesses. Also, it adds credibility to the brand. Jim thinks that the corporations can also provide the capital for start, and that investment benefits the corporations as well – if they want to be leaders in the future, they need to innovate in their products and services. That is hard to do in the corporation, so they need to cooperate with startups or incubators.

Confession of a Serial Entrepreneur – that was a title of a lecture held by Bob Rosenschein at CEED conference. Bob is an American internet entrepreneur currently living and working in Israel and a founder of Answers.com, a top-20 U.S. website.

In the beginning, he asked a question - Why being an entrepreneur? Is it fame, fortune? Being your own boss? Change the world? Because it’s there?

My reason is because it is something you have to do!

He says that the fun is made out of four E’s: Entrepreneurship, Energy, Enthusiasm and Excitement. But there are negative sides as well, like fear. He quoted Scott McNeally who said “A CEO’s job is hiding the terror behind his eyes”.

Bob talked about his background. He was born and raised in the US, went to MIT and later on worked for Ashton Tate. In his thirties he moved with his family to Israel, but continued to work for the company. He met Bill Gates and was completely taken with him because he knew technology and business.

I told everyone that Microsoft is going to take over the world. But in the same time I wasn’t smart enough to invest in it.

Soon Bob worked on a project of adapting Windows for Hebrew and stayed in touch with Gates.

After that Bob founded Answers.com, a website that became very popular. But the company spent a several years searching for a business model. Eventually they made an agreement with Google (interesting, while making a proposal for Google, Bob was connected to Marissa Meyer herself, who was on a junior position). Google put a term “Definition” on almost every English search page and that link lead to Answer’s page. They made WikiAnswers, which became a Wikipedia for questions and answers. In USA they had 54 million of unique visitors. Two years ago they got an offer they couldn’t refuse, so they sold the company to AFCV Holdings for 127 million in cash.

His comment on the whole experience was:

It’s hard! It’s not easy. I’m not saying it’s not worth it.

Israel, a Startup Nation

Bob says that the whole Israel is a startup, since it is so young, but it has a special entrepreneurial climate. For example, average GDP growth is 4.2 percent. Israeli has big economic success stories. Many of the companies are being bought by large ones. There are many Israeli innovations. But he also “blames” the culture for the success – people are very direct, they question authority, the rules, the everything.

10 advices from Bob Rosenschein

Bob gave 10 advices for entrepreneurs:

10. We all go through wishful thinking, but sometimes you need to pessimistic, sometimes optimistic.

9. Build product that the market needs. Create products people can’t live without. Balance technology and marketing.

8. Raise more money! More than you think you need and earlier than you need it. Otherwise the pressure grows and the valuation drops, exponentially.

7. Do the right thing and ask questions later. Use the formula P=40 to 70 – P stands for probability of success and the numbers indicate the percentage of information required. Once the information is in the 40 to 70 range, go for it.

6. Focus! Do fewer things better.

5. Execution risks: Startups need to excel at everything: Development, marketing, sales, finance. A company is not a democracy. Don’t be perfectionist.

4. Adapt! Change that business model. Eat lunch or be lunch!

3. Never believe your own hype! Wishful thinking kills! There is a difference between PR, financing and real success.

2. Choose the right people! Never just settle. Understaff with the brightest. 1 bozo can stop 10 good people.

1. Be optimistic. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier. Don’t think you can change the world, know you can change the world!

This year, along with media like su CNN, The Wall Street Journal or The Guardian, we are proud to see that the media partner of the conference is Netrocratic as well!

That means that we will report straight from the interesting lectures and panels, which are focusing on the New Sharing Economy. Thought leaders and key players are shaping the sharing movement, like Airbnb, Etsy or TaskRabbit, and they will join the stage.

This movement represents a major economic, social and cultural shift and is redefining the ways goods and services are exchanged, valued and created. The conference will explore the economics of the sharing economy movement and why it might mean the end of consumerism, as we know it. Some of the totally new players will launch at LeWeb London, such as Lily Cole, Chris Chabot and Julien Smith.

The sharing economy is entirely based on new communities forming with new values and LeWeb London will bring the most breakthrough communities to the stage. For example, Burning Man gathers 50,000 people in the desert with no money and no marketing allowed! For established industries, the sharing marketplace – with rapidly shifting social, cultural and technological disruptions – is forcing them to respond too.

So, we hope to have a better understanding of the New Sharing Economy, the key players and best practices in the space – and we will share our knowledge. Stay tuned!

How does an "ordinary guy" from Zagreb, Croatia get a chance to work in a company like Google? Well, I’m sure many of you wonder. That is why we decided to interview one of those guys, Nikola Stolnik, who told us more about his previous work and the process that led him to the current job at Google.

Nikola describes himself as a typical guy from Zagreb who loves what he does, which coincidentally led to a great professional opportunity.

I graduated economics from the Economics faculty at the Zagreb University and topped it up with an MBA degree in the same Uni. Straight after college I went to work in audit, which I must admit wasn’t too great. It was a ‘straight out of college’ option but never really got under my skin. Fortunately, I always dabbled with the web, creating web pages, spending hours upon hours researching new technology and following the online trends. Basically this led to me spending my free time planning and constructing my first serious web project, Vidiovo.hr. This eventually led to my dream job, Social Media Manager at Kolektiva. I would like to thank Jeffrey Treichel and Martina Tomić for giving me their trust, and practically opening the doors to my future professional development.

Nikola points out that he learned at Kolektiva most of the stuff he now knows about social, SEO, SEM, e-commerce, e-mail marketing, affiliate and other online tidbits, as well as project and event management. Kolektiva was sort of a gateway drug which led to all of the things to come. After Kolektiva he received an offer from BBDO Proximity for a position of Project Manager, where he organized digital marketing projects, which mostly included planning, scheduling and direct management. As he says, it was an exciting experience, and he was mentored by the best people in the business.

But, in the same time, Nikola was hoping for a big break.

Previously, I was interviewed once for Google and once for Facebook. On my third try I was mostly going at it as a joke, not expecting anything to happen. But surprise-surprise, looks like someone made a mistake and I got hired.

The process

But how did that happen? We wanted to know more about the application process and what was Nikola going through during that time. Well, believe it or not, he applied for the job through general Google jobs page, google.com/jobs.

It was just a matter of uploading my resume and stating some information about me. The process was so seamless that I had the feeling I was having coffee with friends and not really going through a rigid process. To be honest, skills are important, but as we all learned, Google is looking for a specific mindset. This means that basic skills can be learned, but the inner motivation, openness and the desire to give your best is something you inherit, which is greatly sought after.

Nikola says that there was a massive amount of preparation going on on his part, and that was probably why he was so relaxed. And the process as a whole could be described as a friendly chat, and the further he got into the process the more surprised he was with his progress.

Of course, the offer was the pinnacle. Celebrations were had. I still think someone made a mistake and they were actually trying to hire some guy named Nikolay Stolnik, but the spell check wasn’t working.

Current position

Nikola’s current position is an Account Strategist in Dublin, and as such he is in charge of providing strategic consultancy for the Adriatic’s Region growing markets.

We deal directly with advertisers and agencies and we help with optimizing their investments. Also, we help them get most out of their AdWords and other Google products and services. Apart from that, we are in charge of growing and developing our markets.

Word of advice

If working for Google is your dream job too, Nikola has an advice for you:

Everyone has their own path. Explore, learn, grow. Try to develop yourself daily and surround yourself with like minded people who are smarter than you. You can’t go wrong.

In the same time we wanted to know more about Nikola’s future plans, but his answer was quite diplomatic:

A Russian friend once told me a great saying - If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans. Professionally, I will give my best to learn, develop and grow as much as possible while I have the chance. I mean, until they discover their spelling error.

We are sure that there was no spelling error, Nikola – it was just the case of “he who dares, wins”.

And what about you? Would you dare?

High quality, comfortable and durable. This camper is made of a solid 1/8" thick gray wool felt and contrasted with beautiful yellow ochre 100% wool felt. Lining the bottom of the bag is a waterproof matching gray waxed canvas. This multipurpose bag is designed with a roll top so it is easy to get in and out of as well as being adjustable for either small or large loads. Contrasting the waxed canvas is durable tan vegetable dyed leather.

Surf Cruiser

A great ride to work during summer days! This is a perfect set up for your easy early morning ride or for evening street surf. Inspired by the early surfboards and designed to make some heads turn.

Ordinary pack of matches doesn’t have to be ordinary. Japanese artist Hiromi Hirasaka created a series of matchsticks which feature facial expressions on their heads, igniting a bit of a humor to what is typically seen as the mundane. Almost too beautiful to be lit!
We heard a few interesting case studies on the third day of Tvitomanija conference. One of them was Sonus Art, a high profile audio and video shop from Croatia, which used the power of Twitter for rebranding, events, creating buzz and increasing sale. Nebojsa Ugljesic, their former marketing manager, said that they used Twitter because it is the fastest communication channel and it is also very well connected with other social media networks – everything they did on Twitter had an impact on other networks. In 18 months off constant communication on Twitter, TweetUPs and other activities they were profiled as the most famous audio and video shop in Zagreb, maybe even in the whole country, while the sales increased for 15 percent.

Inchoo is a great example of a successful content marketing strategy. It started as a one-person company and today it has over 30 employees, more than 45 projects and their blog has more than 140,000 visits per month! It was interesting to see how the income increased together with visit number which led to the fact that today Inchoo is a Magento Silver Partner.

Hire me, Jon Stewart – have you heard about this guy? Well, his video became viral and Davor Runje from drap agency analyzed elements that led to video’s virality. He pointed out a good introduction, where Ivan Saric presented himself in a clear, yet funny way. He also used universal humor, like ninjas. He wasn’t arrogant, he didn’t promise the moon – he was humble, realistic and funny. Also, he did make a politically incorrect joke, by hiring a little man, but Runje said that he was cool enough to do that. The most important thing is that he made a call for action, because most of people wouldn’t remember to share the video.

The last day was also dedicated to traditional media and social media. Our editor in chief Ivan Brezak Brkan talked about power of social media and the fact that many traditional journalists and editors don’t realize its benefits:

For example, Netokracija wouldn’t exist if there was no Twitter – people from this network promoted our portal.

Also, he pointed out that the speed is extremely important in publishing the news – you need to be either first or the best, or you will probably fail.

Raging battle between online and offline media. Who is winning?

Third day of Tvitomanija was also marked by heated discussions on journalism and social networks. Representatives from both offline and online media came together in order to talk about current situation which turned out not to be so grim as one would thought.

Zoran Stanojević, editor and host of TV show Oko Magazin TV on Radio Television of Serbia said that he is using Twitter but he would never broadcast information straight from this service as it is often unreliable by professional standards. Instead he would rather wait for the confirmation from his company. He stated that Twitter has accelerated the pace of which people consume information, so nowadays they expect the same from professionals who just can't process that amount of information that quickly.

People who are not trained journalists, who just tweet, often do not have a clear picture of the entire situation, therefore they are not in a position to interpret it the right way.

When it comes to privacy issues Antonija Mandić, a host on RTL TV station in Croatia added that she uses her personal Twitter profile outside the profession but was quickly interrupted by Zoran Sprajc from Croatian National Television who clearly stated that journalists are journalists 24/7 and that they are somewhat of a public personas who represent their media companies outside 9 to 5 work time.

We are public personas and for our sake, and the sake of our company we should be very careful about what we tweet. Inappropriate behavior can be very damaging for our employers.

Implementation of hashtags in TV shows was also one of the discussed topics, however it is still hard to do it simply because numbers show that people are not yet ready for a second screen interaction, although non of the panelists were dismissive of the idea.

Ana Stunić from Nova TV stated that children nowadays use tablets and mobile phones the way we used computers. They have became the next generation, and we should work hard in order to implement new solutions for them Ana added.

Panelists concluded this panel by saying that they are aware of all the possibilities new technology is able to provide but they are still not able to work with it due to a simple fact – market is still not that demanding and their companiesOnli are pretty big, hence any innovation takes longer than usual.

How to use social networks in your favor

Our Editor-in-chief Ivan Brezak Brkan also closed the conference with his lecture on how to use social networks in order to build a strong network of people around yourself. He stated that the most important thing is to hustle like crazy because nobody else is going to do the hard work for you. Ivan told the audience that he met Kevin Rose simply by saying "hi" on the escalator, which eventually turned into long conversation.

If needed, spam, but be cautious because it can backfire. However, you don't need to ask permission from other people. Be polite, be aware but hustle, hustle, hustle!

He added that it’s also important to be an early bird because it puts you in a position where it’s possible to quickly grow a network of newcomers which will only further distinguish you from the others. During Tvitomanija everybody was Instagramming, however Netocratic team was using Vine in order to attract attention and it paid of Ivan added.

This is a perfect time to start "Vineing" because it hasn't yet became that popular in this region!

Brkan closed his presentation by saying that it's vital to create a strong network of people because you never know how they might be able to help you. Also, you have to be of help to them as they will appreciate the favor and will sure know how to return one.

The event will bring together companies with appealing investment proposition looking to boost their business with top-tier investment companies from Bloomberg Tradebook’s network. Companies are going to network with and pitch in front of well known investors to identify potential matches.

This time, after the success of the Hungarian Innovation Day 2012 (supported by the British Venture Capital Association and EBRD VC fund), InVendor broadened the scope and scouted companies from Central- and Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa. Balazs Szabo of InVendor said:

inveAst is a great opportunity for promising CEEMEA companies to get connected with top-tier VCs in London if they have sound business model, disruptive strategyand the aim to get funded. We are looking for early stage and more mature companies also, the only criteria is the global scalability of the ventures.

The event is free of charge, but invitation based (12 shortlisted companies and selected investors are invited). Application for companies is open until the 15th May through the official website.

On the second day of Tvitomanija, largest social media conference in this region, Tomislav Grubisic from iStudio agency, held a lecture about ROI in social media. He stated that community management is something completely different from social media marketing. Community management is related to customer care, while social media marketing includes advertising, targeting and segmenting. Also, he pointed out the importance of (S)CRM and analytics and concluded that all of those segments make ROI more accurate – when the client has the exact information how much he invested and how much he got back, he will be more willing to invest in social media marketing.

TV and social media - frenemies?

It was interesting to see how regional broadcasting networks adopted social media. Panel discussion started with Jeff Zucker's, CNN's president, statement – he said that social media is a frenemy, and that he is actually afraid of them. So, we wondered if regional televisions think the same about social media. The discussion gathered representatives from Slovenia (POP TV), Croatia (Nova TV and RTL) and Serbia (RTS). Experiences were different – while private broadcasting networks mainly invest more in social media, public ones slowly adapt new trends. Denis Oštir from POP TV had an interesting observation:

Before the television was a source of information and now information is available to everyone. That is why I think that we will become editors of that information. For example, people heard that Bin Laden was killed on Twitter and after that they turned on CNN and saw that it actually happened. That is happening today, not tomorrow.

One cannot gamble with their follower's trust

Second day of conference was also marked by lecturers who talked about social media and its influence on society. Dragan Varagic, professor and Internet strategist, talked about influence on social networks and why it's crucial not to gamble with it.

He stated that there are several types of influence and that people often mistake it for popularity when they ought to make a clear difference.

It is important to know that individuals and organizations do not have influence on every field, except the one they are specialized in and that's totally acceptable.

Varagic also added that the number of followers is not directly related to the influence. A person with only 10 followers could get his message spread out to a large number of people simply by being followed by a person with a large number of followers.

Individual by itself has no influence, it is the number of people who share the story that is influental.

He continued by saying that the change of attitude and new user acquisition are two main things which can shift the paradigm in this society using social networks. Varagic ended his presentation by saying that it's important for people to measure influence using tools such as Klout, but it's also important not to gamble with the trust of their followers. Once they loose it, it is unlikely they will gain it back.

Istok Pavlovic on social media and viral content

After Dragan, Istok Pavlovic, blogger from Serbia took the stage to talk about the process of creating the viral content on social media.

Social media is like a huge cocktail party. You don't want to be the guy who's boring everybody by talking about him all night long, and this is how certain profiles behave on social networks.

Adding that community management resembles DJ-ing, he stated that people in charge of managing the profiles need to have empathy towards users who liked their page in the first place because of the uniqueness of the brand.

He also said that the media discourse is saturated and that a lot of profiles are posing generic content, which is not interesting to people. Istok point out that it is ever so important to change the form of content because that is what people will notice and eventually share. He closed his session by stating that infographics are a perfect way to share some information with people, as they no longer want to read long articles with no pictures.
