I'm trying something new this month! I'm using bitly to compile responses to the Think Tank at http://bit.ly/fS6YFb

Not sure if I like it or not yet, but it's worth a shot. Let me know what you think of it!

Hi Jayne - thanks so much for your thoughtful contribution of your predictions, hopes, and fears for nptech in 2011! I'm looking forward to sharing your ideas in the round-up at the end of the month.

only thing is...

hey,

interesting piece with a great message. a couple of things stand out for me as missing in this picture though:

1. the solution may be to give up 'leadership' and realize that grassroots organizing is already well underway, perhaps in communities you're not aware of or connected to - go join and learn from and support and build on what is already going on in racialized and indigenous organizing circles on the ground, instead of expecting people to 'join' what you think of as the movement - which as you say, actually describes the good but limited sphere of online and nonprofit activism.

2. Just because you haven't connected yet with the organizing happening, don't assume it's not happening - do more research and make personal connections and wonder why the net world has stayed so separate from the rest of the social justice universe. Be ready to follow the lead of others who have been organizing for years or decades, rather than expect to control/set the scope of the issues to those you are already familiar with. The solution certainly does have technological aspects - i.e. you can put your tech experience to use helping solve problems identified by people who organize in communities already - but the movement and defining the issues isn't going to be 'led' by the technophiles if we're really going to get anywhere.

chrs - nora

Let's geat real and collaborative!

Thanks for this interesteing twist on the usual year-end reflection Joe!
I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Three take-aways for me:

Get real (more honest and more people doing real action)

Get collaborative (between online networking/organizing platforms)

Get more skilled organizers (mastering and bridging the online and the onland).

Reminds me of this picture about that goes beyond the usual "teach me how to fish" proverb:

"If you give me a fish, you have fed me for a day. If you teach me to fish, then you have fed me until the river is contaminated or the shoreline seized for development. But if you teach me to organize, then whatever the challenge, I can join together with my peers, and we will fashion our own solution." (From The Barefoot Guide to Working with Organizations and Social Change)

Some questions to explore:

How do we empower those who knows what's real, is collaborative by nature, and wants to organize for real change?

How do we make it inspiring and (relatively) easy for the rest of us to join the movement?

Where and how should these (often random) groups of people start/initiate change?

What will it take for all these online platforms to (truly) collaborate?

It's not smart to block social media sites from your employees. This is an awesome way to increase moral on the workforce level. It's a great way to gain exposure in your markets. People like to see employees of a company engageing in social media during the day. It shows that the company understands. That they "get it."

Here is a new social media policy of Coca-Cola http://www.tubesfan.com/watch/andy-sernovitz-interview-coke-s-new-social... . I think that a lot of businesses block social networks because they haven't learned yet to use it according to their interests but soon they will get accostomed to it.
