What we are able to enjoy now wasn’t possible in the past. The technology in this world has well advance rapidly and is still continuing to evolve. In the past, it was hard to keep in contact with your friend from another country. It was hard to conduct the different market trends. It was hard to advertise your product. It was hard to get a business partner. All these were overcome through the power of The Internet. So now what?

As time passes, opinion changes. Perspective changes and so does the current trends. I will be going through with you on the current networking trends that can be beneficial in many aspect.

Bring Your Own Device

This is currently a major trend where people will, literally, be bringing their own device to workplace. In the past, companies will provide you with the necessary device to perform at work. It is shown that when you are using your own device, you will feel a sense of attachment and will be able to have a choice in your device selection. Many companies have been adopting this trend and providing their workers a certain sum of money to get the device they want and need. This will help workers to grow a certain bond with their device which may in fact increase productivity. BYOD also provides lots of flexibility as one does not have to access a certain resource in a certain network. Extended Connectivity has allow remote access to the workplace allowing for easier time management and flexibility in their planning.

Video Communication

This trend refers to the technology that allows both personal users and organization users to be able to facilitate video conferences with your friends or business partner respectively. This enables us to re-create a very realistic environment of a meeting. The benefits of this is how flexible it enables user to be. To be able to be somewhere without being there, almost like a teleportation machine. I will be going through the benefits of this trend

· Overcome the limitation of Geographic Boundaries – Allows us to be able to have a live face to face communication without having to be physically there.

· Save the Earth – This trend enables us to save money and time on travelling expenses. Instead, it gives us more flexibility in time management.

· Increase Targeted Audience– Enables user to hop on and join different video conferences no matter where they are at. It could be about the company or self-help purposes but the main point is, availability. This allows for a larger audience to be targeted.

Online Collaboration

In the past, it was literally impossible to do a joint partnership from one end of the world to another. Well now, that dream is here. Online collaboration is spreading like wildfire. With this technology, it allows for better planning and sharing of ideas. You will be able to join the discussion even if you are not physically present with the rest of the team. I will now be listing a few benefits that comes along with this trend.

· Improves and broaden the number of

Communication Choices – With Online Collaboration, meeting doesn’t have to held at certain location. It can be held all over the world. Collaboration can be done across the whole world with no limitation. One such example is Google Drive where you can access the same information and contribute at any time.

· Increase Efficiency – Workers and collaboration partners will be able to share their ideas and plan with one another at the tip of their fingers. No need for waiting time, no need for meetings. Information will be accessible easily and will hence increase the productivity and efficiency of their current project as there will be no more bottlenecks.

· Courses training Evolved– Ever heard of webinars, seminars and courses. All of these are now available online. You can be going for a course that is held in Europe but still be in another part of the world. Isn’t that amazing, just think of all the time and money saved.

· Improved Customer Service – This trend doesn’t necessarily be used for planning or events. It can also be use at the servicing market to provide customer with the access that will connect them to the company straight resulting in a better experience.

Cloud Computing

Refers to the technology that delivers a service to users. These service is chargeable. Allows user to get the benefits without having to do the heavy work. It allows the storage of personal file. It allows the retrieval of data over the Internet. It increase business capability without any investment in physical infrastructure. Many service can be sold over the cloud to any device in the world. So what are the benefits of Cloud Computing?

· Offers Flexibility – Able to access information anywhere at anytime

· Rapid Growth – Able to increase the companies capability without having to purchase physical infrastructure

· Resources Utilization – Resources of the company can be put to better use

· Creation of new strategies – New strategies that includes cloud computing in it

Data Centre

How is this possible, this is only possible because there is a data centre that stores all the information for you? This centre have

· Redundant Data Connection – To provide Reliability and Fault Tolerance

· Efficient Servers – To provide fast read and write speed over the Internet

· Redundant Storage Devices – Provide Extra reliability and Data Backu

· Extra power supplies – Ensure the chances of power failure are kept to the minimum

This allows the server to run 24/7 and ensures that backup is accounted. In an event of a power failure or data loss, recovery can be done as quick as possible and allows the server to run at full speed at no time

Network Reliability

Network must have the capability to ensure that all links(Click here to learn more about connection) are up all the time. If a network isn’t reliable, then downtime will be a very common problem.

Fault Tolerance/a>

There are 4 key points that have to be met when setting up a network
1.  Fault Tolerance – To have more than 1 connection connected to a certain place.
2.      Scalability – To be able to grow in network size and fit into the network topology/design due to increasing demands
3.      Quality Of Service – To modify the bandwidth priority of traffic so bandwidth is put to better use
4.      Security – To protect the network from intruders. Can increase the security of physical access as well as implementing extra security system so as to beef up the network security

Fault Tolerance

We all know how dire a solution is when the network is down. Everyone starts to panic
and chaos arise. A Fault Tolerant Environment will be able to ensure that when a disaster do happen, the impact done to the equipment are kept to the minimal. This is important because it will allow faster recovery time. The damage done to the organization is also reduce greatly depending on the kind of accident that happen. There are 2 kinds of Fault tolerance
1.      Fault Tolerance in a circuit switch
·        Makes use of the load balancing concept. Have many path to the same destination. However only one path will be chosen. If the chosen path is down, remaining system will still be functioning. This allows for the network to continue as usual as if nothing has every happen.
2.      Fault Tolerance in a Packet Switch
·        Similar to circuit switch fault tolerance. The only difference is that the redundancy link is also use when there is no error. Data is usually broken up into smaller packet and encapsulated with the source and destination address. They are then send separately over and de encapsulated at the destination

Scalability

Scalability is the ability to scale up the network base on the current demand needed for the network.
This is the age of the internet where everywhere you go, you see electronic devices. Without a network that can scale up, how is it possible for the organization to grow! This is done by building a network that allows you to replicate the exact setup easily. The replication is done when you need to scale up your organization.

Quality Of Service

This refer to the priority allocated to the services in the network. This service is used so that the bandwidth can match your need. Criteria for QoS are
·        Is time a factor (Results will vary based on time)
·        Is time not a factor (Results will be the same)
·        Is it use for important matter
·        Is it necessary (You can reduce QoS if your worker is doing something unproductive on the Internet)

Depending on the situation , changing the QoS can be useful for your network in utilizing it better.

Security

This is used to ensure that the organization information is kept private and confidential. Security is used to
·        Prevent any form of damage to important data
·        Prevent loss of funds
·        Prevent leakage of information
·        Prevent loss of business (Disrupting the System)

Security is also use to
· Maintain Data integrity. This means that the Data isn’t change once it will transmitted from the sender
· Prevent Theft of information.

There has to be something connecting all the devices together. The Media of the Network is what is used to combine all the device together. We currently have 3 different kind of media which we use so as to transmit data from one end to another.

Content:
Copper Cable
Fibre Optics
Wireless

1.      Copper Cable
·        Very Cheap material and easily obtainable.
·        Used in RJ 45 cable.
·        Cat 5e can go up to 100mbps. Distance of up to 100 metre
·        Cat 6 can go up to 10000 mbps at 100 metre

2.      Fiber Optics
·        High Cost
·        Internal Cabling easily broken as it is glass
·        Multi-mode allows same speed at shorter distance
·        Single Mode allows more distance at same speed but is more expensive compared to multi mode.
· Single Mode has a smaller core compared to Multi Mode.

3.      Wireless
·        Uses frequency
·        Uses channel
·        2.4ghz and 5 ghz
·        2.4ghz is use for longer range but slower speed
·        5ghz is used for short range but has a faster speed
·        No need physical medium to connect devices
·        Speed is slower as there is throughput involved

IP Addresses

IPv4 and IPv6 address are the logical addresses of a device. Think of it as the place you are currently at. It changes base on your current location. There are a 2 IP addressing mode available

1.      Static IP

·        This means that the IP is fixed and cannot be changed

·        IP have to configured manually

2.      Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

·        IP is assign automatically

·        There will be a range where the IP is chosen from

·        IP will change depending on which IP is available

·        There will be a certain amount of time you keep the IP before it is release

·        You can use the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew command in the cmd is change your IP

How to enter IP into a router (Cisco)

You can enter IP addresses into each interface on a router by

1.      Entering into Command Line Interface

3.      Config t

4.      Int “Interface Number”

5.      Ip add “IP address” “Subnet Mask”

Binary Theory

Everything in the networking world is made up of 1’s and 0’s.
So for an IP address the 1’s represents the Network bits and the 0’s represents the Host bits. Imagine a row of cups that are empty. They are the “O’s”. What if they start filling up? They becomes the “1’s”. Simple right. In an IPv4 address, there are 32 cups and they are divided in 4 section. Each section is an octet and each octet has 8 cups. Each octet total value is 255. Each “0’s/Cups” represent a different value

Example.

128 | 64 | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 2| 1 |.

0        0       0      0      0   0    0   0   .

As the number of “cups” gets filled up, the 0 will start changing to 1.

Example

128 | 64 | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 2| 1 |.

0    | 0 |   0 | 0 | 0 | 0| 0| 0 |.

Becomes this when filled

1    | 0 |   0 | 0 | 0 | 0| 0| 0 |.

Which means that the first octet will become 128. Apply this to all the octet and you have a full range IP address. Remember that the number have to fit into the subnet mask range.

Example.

192.168.0.1 – 192.168.0.255 /24

You can only fit 32 – 24 which is 8 into in. Which links to the next question? How do I calculate host bits?

How to calculate host bits and network bits?

32 = Total number of Hosts available.

In the example above, there were 24 network bits

32 – 24 = 8 bits = 255

Vice versa, to calculate network bits you take the total host bits – host bits.

What are Network Bits and Host Bits?

Host bits defines the amount of addresses that can be used in the the IP. Whereas network bits tells you which part of the available IP range you receive.

Example

IP address: 192.168.0.1

Subnet Mask:/24

This means that you can have up to 255-1 addresses. One address is the broadcast address and cannot be used.

Subnet Mask

Subnet Mask fills up from the right to the left. That is the rule and it cannot be changed. It’s like an order where they state you have to go from left to right.

2. Convert the following IP addresses to binary format

·        10.1.9.100

·        255.255.224.0

·        255.255.255.192

·        255.240.0.0

4. Convert the following subnet mask to decimal dotted format and binary format.

·        /25

·        /18

·        /10

1) What is the IP address in decimal format?

1means filled and 0 means empty.

IP address: 128 + 0 + 32 + 0 + 8+ 4 + 0 +0. 0 + 0 +0 +16 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0. 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 +0 + 0 +0.0 + 0 + 0 + 0 + 0 +0 + 0 + 1

Hence the IP is

172.16.0.1/16

The IP is 172.16.0.1 because by adding all the number up, it forms this.

The subnet mask is 255.255.0.0

Why? Because one octet fills up with 255 and only 172 is used. Hence the maximum amount is 255. The subnet mask represents 4 octets. Each octet can have a max of 255. If only 172 is filled , it will still be 255.

2) Convert the following IP addresses to binary format      128 | 64 | 32 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 2| 1 |.

Imagine a world without languages. What will be the common ground for our ideas and opinion to interact with each other? What will happen to the innovation we all are seeking for? That’s the same when it comes to the communication done on the network.

We know how the message is transferred from one place to another. But do we know what the message is. That is what we will be discussing.

Remember when you were young, you will play with building blocks. It shares the same concept. Computer Communication is a computer language where the data you would like to send over is encoded before it is send over the “MEDIUM”/MEDIA. Before reaching its destination, it is then decoded.

For a communication to take place, you will need

·        A source user and a destination
·        What method of communication
·        What language you will be using
·        How fast it should be
·        Confirmation

Segmentation and Encapsulation

Message frame have a certain limit and the data you may be trying to transmit may be too big. Common sense tells us that if it’s too big, we cut it down. Same goes for this case and the process is called segmentation/segmenting the data
·        The limit of each frame forces the source host to break down the message so as to fit both the minimum and maximum requirement of the frame.
·        Those data that is spilted up is known as segments.
·        Each segment is encapsulated with the address information and sent over the network

Its like having a Piano delivered to your house but your door is too small. What do you do? You disassemble the piano and deliver it piece by piece. Same theory! But wait, I disassembled the piano and now what will you do?

Exactly, I will assemble it back. Same goes for these data packets that are filled with segments. They will be de-encapsulated and put back together so we can interpret it.

Unicast , Multicast and Broadcast

You now know how the packet is formed and the process of it being transferred. But do you know which method is the packet using to get to the destination?

Imagine this scenario where you are in school. The teacher in your school have 3 choices
·        Talk to each student one by one
·        Talk to a few student at a go
·        Talk to every student at a go

These are the options available for delivery of your packets.
·        Unicast

1.      Peer – Peer.

2.      Maximum of One Connection

·        Multicast

1.      Peer – To a Few.

2.      Allows certain user to receive information only

·        Broadcast

1.      One to All

2.      All Users in the network will receive the data

Protocols Explained

The packet uses Network protocol to determine if they are speaking the same “Language”. The network protocol is used to determine whether you are the same or different.
·        It is use to see the format and structure of the packet.

So what protocol are used commonly?
·        Application Protocol – HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
·        Transport Protocol – Transmission Control Protocol(TCP)
·        Internet Protocol- IP
·        Network access protocol – Data Link and Physical Layer

Hey there, remember in the earlier post where I elaborate on what an end device is? Well now we will be introducing another kind of device which is the Intermediary Device. This device main purpose is to deliver or send out your request over to the destination. It is like a the journey from point A to point B. It is used to CONNECT up end devices together

1.ROUTER

A router primarily use is to provide a “Door” for request coming in and out of the house “Network”. Without a router
, traffic is unable to be routed from one place to another. It can also be set up to provide a layer of filter so as to filter the kind protocol packet that are allowed to enter.

A router contains 2 kinds of RAM (Random Access Memory)
1.      RAM -> Volatile
·        Volatile means that data stored in the RAM will be erased once a shutdown on the router is done. All memory and data are flushed off and are not permernant
2.      NVRAM ->Non – volatile
·        The IOS and configuration of the Router is stored in this part of the router. Data here is stored permantly and will not be deleted if there is a shutdown command that is being executed or when there is a power shortage.
·        To transfer data from the RAM to NVRAM, user have to go in global Config mode and type in “do copy run start”

·        This transfers the running config file and save it at the start config area which is used when booting up

·        Use a console cable to enter
·        Have to be physically there
3.      AUX Port ->

2.Switch

1.      Is used to allowed multiple connection to a router since a router can only put a certain amount of Network Interface Cards
2.      A switch is a cost effective way to utilize the maximum usage of a Network
3.      It allows VLAN to be created and hence saving Private IP addresses
4.      Allows the connection of a network to be much neater
5.      Allows User to analyse the topology at a much greater ease
6.      Has 1 collision Domain to 1 port
7.      Has 1 broadcast Domain (If VLAN is not enabled)

2.      Packets easily drop due to collision

There are 2 kinds of topologies. Physical and Logical. Physical decides how the connection are wired up and where the device is place.Where as logical topology usually includes the IP addressing scheme of the device as well as the device kind.

What is the difference between LAN and WAN

Local Area Network(LAN)

Wide Area Network (WAN)

· Does not need a Service provider to connect up
·Shares the same network

· Needs a service provider
·  Different LAN connected together
· Separated through long distances

The important difference between a LAN and a WAN is that WAN requires a service provider. That is the only way you can differentiate a LAN and a WAN easily.

The internet is a huge combination of different network that are usually owned by the different service provider in the world. It acts like a School where there are many different classes (Service Provider) and clique (Network) which forms the school (Internet).

We are currently living in the day and age where we are constantly connected to a network of some sort but we don't really realize it. Networking is basically the connection of many different people from all walks of life coming together on a certain media.

Networking , when brought down to its simplest form, is just a string of 1s and 0s. These 1s and 0s and the identity of these data and it represent their unique form.

Would we be able to do business across 2 great oceans? Will we be able to obtain any information from another country?

No. Without network, none of the above will be possible. Luckily for us, we live in the age where technology
is being surpassed at the blink of an eyelid. Network has enabled us to be able to communicate with people far far away, allowed us to play games with people from different continents, allowed us to understand what is going on on the other side of the world, allowed us to be able to stay connected with the rest of the world....etc.

Question to ask yourself: Do you think you will save more time with or without network access to different technologies?

3.The Different Sizes Of Network Setup

Just like clothing sizes, Network Setup have many different sizes as well. Ranging from Small to Medium to Large Setup, different setup requires different devices used. In this section, i will be going through the different setup formation aka Topologies
