Shaheed Bhai Charat Singh Babbar

During the Sikh struggle for independance, the courageous Jujharoo Singh’s carried out numerous action which resulted in sleepless nights for the Delhi rulers. One such action worth mentioning took place as Shaheed Bhai Charat Singh Babbar re-enacted the history of Bhai Bota Singh and Bhai Garja Singh.

It was in the year 1990/1991, fake encounters by the Punjab Police had become routine. Bhai Charat Singh had decided to tackle the security forces head on and assembled a squad of Babbar Khalsa Jujharoo’s. Around 4pm the group set up a roadblock on en-route from GT Road (Amritsar) to Batala Road and challenged the CRPF and Punjab Police to a real encounter.

2-3 hours had elapsed yet not a single Punjab Police or BSF/CRPF vehicle had passed by. Bhai Charat Singh spoke out to the Singhs and said “Now we are going to collect tax for Khalistan” the Singhs asked “How are we going to do that?” Bhai Charat Singh said for each car that passes the owner must pay 5 rupees tax and a 2 rupees charge for each truck driver. This was to send a message to the government that Jujharoo rule had been established and the Singh’s were openly collecting tax.

According to eye-witness sources, truck drivers and car drivers were gladly paying the tax, in fact many where handing 100 rupee notes and suggesting to the Singh’s that the tax amount’s are too low, and that they should be raised. Bhai Charat Singh re-iterated the reasons behind the “taxing” and said we are only doing this to show the Punjab Police and Hindustan Government that the heirs to Bhai Bota Singh and Bhai Garja Singh’s legacy are still alive.

Bhai Charat Singh then sent a written challenge to Sadar police station, Batala, stating that the Singh’s had blocked off the road, if your force is brave enough then come and face us. When this letter had no effect, Bhai Charat Singh had another letter delivered, this time to the area’s infamous and brutal police officer, Ajaib Singh. Upon reading Bhai Charat Singh’s written challenge, Ajaib Singh immediately called his superiors requesting CRPF forces to be deployed alongside the Punjab Police.

As the CRPF forces and Punjab Police where heading towards the Singh’s, an argument broke out as to who should be leading the charge, with neither wanting to be the first to face the Babbar Singhs. Eventually they decided that 2 cars (1 of Punjab Police and 1 of the CRPF) would lead and 30-40 cars of both forces combined following.

By this time the Singh’s, who had been waiting for a long a time decided to lift the roadblock and head back to their base. As the Singh’s were walking back, in the distance they noticed the flashing lights of the Punjab Police cars. The Singh’s began running back to the roadblock spot, and opened fire directed at the leading 2 vehicles. The number of security forces injured or killed in this firing is not known, however the ponds of blood on GT Road was compelling evidence suggesting a high number of casualites. The security forces were caught by surprise and could not pluck up the courage to even return fire at the Babbar Singhs.

According to one source, one of the police officers from the leading vehicles tried launching a grenade at the Singhs, however such was the fear in his mind, that the grenade dropped from his hand into his own car causing it to explode. Upon seeing the heavy damage the leading cars had suffered, the 30-40 vehicles which where following, fearing for their lives, decided to retreat and sped off in the opposite direction.

Shaheed Bhai Charat Singh Babbar

THIS was a REAL encounter in which the State Forces came up against the fearless Singhs of Sri Guru Gobind Singh.

Shaheed Baba Jang Singh

Shaheed Baba Jang Singh was born in village Mahel Kala in 1937, into the house of Sardar Bishan Singh & Mata Harnam Kaur. In 1950 Baba Ishar Singh Ji (Nanaksar) visited this village for a keertan smagam, Baba Jang Singh was very impressed by the divan and left for Nanaksar with Baba Ishar Singh Ji. At Nanaksar Baba Jang Singh performed his duties with utmost respect and dedication.

In 1961 Baba Ishar Singh Ji visited Delhi for a smagam and on his return stopped at Karnal; here the sangat requested Baba Ji to construct a Gurdwara for the sangat (congregation). This task was started by Baba Sadhu Singh in 1963, after Baba Ishar Singh Ji had passed away. In 1972 the Gurdwara building was complete and thousands of devotees came to visit the Gurdwara and seek blessings of Guru Sahib. In 1981 on request of the sangat, the foundation stone was laid for a langar hall in dedication to Mata Sahib Deva on the GT Road bypass at Karnal, where 24 hours langar was served to the devotees. Baba Jang Singh Ji was at the forefront of this seva.

From the very first day Baba Jang Singh Ji entered Nanaksar till his last breath Baba Ji was ever immersed in Naam Simran and seva of Guru Ji’s sangat. There are very few individuals who are blessed with attributes of spiritual and physical power and strength, Baba Ji was one of them.

Inevitably one who takes birth has to leave the earth one day, but some deaths are such in which eternal existence is hidden. These deaths are granted to the brave individuals who surrender there lives for truth and justice. Baba Ji fell into this category, he could not stand the injustices and atrocities carried out upon innocent Sikhs. Baba Ji fought against these oppressors head on.

The Dharam Yudh Morcha led by Sant Jarnail Singh alongside the Shiromani Akali Dal had become the talk of the whole nation and a headache for the Indian Government. During the Morcha a bus full of captive Singh’s was taken to a railway platform at Tarn Taran and collided with an oncoming train, in which 34 Singh’s attained Shaheedi. This new wave of atrocity deeply touched the hearts and minds of the entire Sikh community and it became apparent to that the Singh’s were deliberately massacred by the government.

Floods of sangat from many different areas began to emerge to pay their respects for the Shaheed Singhs. The sangat gathered at Amritsar and set off towards Delhi to let the tyrant leaders at Delhi know that there voices cannot be silenced.

The first night the sangat stopped at Fategarh Sahib and second night at Mata Sahib Deva langar hall in Karnal. After performing his langar seva duties Baba Jang Singh also joined the sangat in their march to Delhi.

Upon reaching the parliament, the sangat was fired upon on, Baba Jang Singh marched towards the front and a hail of bullets riddled his body.

Baba Jang Singh Ji’s final rites were performed by Baba Sadhu Singh (Nanaksar) on the 23rd of October 1982, many Sikh personalities came to pay there respects. Even till this day thousands of devotees visit Karnal Gurdwara Sahib where talk of Baba Ji’s sacrifice and seva is ongoing.

Shaheed General Labh Singh

The road to revolution is enlightened and reddened with the blood of every guerrilla who laid his life for his country and justice.

In the years which have followed the storming of the Golden Temple complex, much has been said about our Sikh brothers and sisters who have fought and died for a sovereign Sikh homeland: a Sikh homeland for which they have spilt their blood so that we can one day live in freedom.

It is appropriate that we spare time to read the history of one of the greatest saint-soldiers in the present struggle against the Indian regime. Bhai Sukhdev Singh alias General Labh Singh is ranked in the forefront of warriors for the liberation of Khalistan.

He was born in the village Panjwar in the district of Amritsar and at a very young age had a yearning to learn and practice Sikhi. After finishing his education, he left and joined the Police force. He served in the Punjab Police until the day of Vaisakhi in 1978 when 13 innocent Sikhs were killed by the ‘Nakli’ Nirankari cult who were being sponsored by the Indian Government to divide the Sikhs. General Labh Singh’s spirit further revolted when he witnessed the desecration of Sikh shrines and the brutalities committed on the Sikh youth by the Indian Security forces. He realised that serving in a corrupt and inhuman Police force was not an honourable profession. The spirit of the saint-soldier awoke in him and he went to see Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale who had gathered a large following amongst the Sikh youth. Sant Bhindranwale, a socio-spiritual leader was gearing his activities to counteract the anti-Sikh activities of the Indian regime whose aim was to destroy the religious base of the Sikhs and other minorities through state violence and repression. Sant Bhindranwale campaigned for Sikhs to take up arms to defend their faith. Having witnessed the oppression unleashed on the Sikhs, Labh Singh listened to his conscience, discarded his Police career and became actively involved in the struggle for freedom. He joined the flowing ranks of the Saint-soldiers of the Damdami Taksal under the leadership of Sant Bhindranwale and started to bring all those people guilty of human rights abuses to book in true Sikh tradition. It was Sant Bhindranwale who named him Labh Singh became whatever mission he was sent on the Sikh nation profited from.

Aftermath of Operation Bluestar

During the storming of Sri Harmandir sahib (Golden Temple), General Labh Singh was given the duty to protect the side entrance to Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and it was this bunker which inflicted the most damage to the invading forces as ‘General’ Brar of the Indian army has quoted. During the attack, General Labh Singh was arrested and tortured in various jails across India. He was also one of the Jodhpur detainees.

On 26 January 1986, a Sarbat Khalsa was held under the guidance of Damdami Taksal at Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and a number of resolutions were passed. The main resolution broke all ties with India and it was announced that it was a goal of the Sikh nation to establish a sovereign Sikh homeland as envisaged by Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale. The Panthic Committee was formed to overlook the Sikh struggle and the Khalistan Commando Force (KCF) was instigated to lead the armed struggle for the liberation of the Sikhs from Indian rule. The Khalistan Commando Force’s first Chief General was Bhai Manbeer Singh Chaheru alias General Hari Singh, who was a member of the Damdami Taksal and had been a bodyguard of Sant Bhindranwale. It was General Manbeer Singh who planned an audacious rescue to free his colleagues including Labh Singh from the clutches of the Indian Armed forces. On 6 April 1986, General Labh Singh was being escorted by the Indian Police on his way to a court appearance in Jalandhar when General Manbeer Singh and two other commandos from his unit attacked the Police convoy, killing six security men. This was a real encounter with the Khalsa forces, not the fictional accounts Indian government dreams up to camouflage its brutal regime in which only the Singh’s are killed and the Police don’t even receive a scratch. Thus Labh Singh was rescued from the clutches of the Indian authorities and became even more determined to fight to free his nation from the chains of slavery.

Shaheed Bhai Manbeer Singh Chaheru

When he rejoined the struggle, not only was he one of the most charismatic of the Sikh fighters, serving as an inspiration to the disfranchised youth. After the arrest and disappearance of Bhai Manbeer Singh on 9 August 1986, General Labh Singh took command of the Khalistan Commando Force. In retaliation for the arrest, General Labh Singh sent out Shaheeds: Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha and Bhai Mathura Singh to ‘bring to law’ General Arun Kumar Sridhar Vaidya who had masterminded the desecration of the Sri Harmandir Sahib but presided over the mass killing of innocent pilgrims, destruction of 37 other historical Sikh shrines, the looting of the Sikh Central Museum and Library thus depriving Sikh’s of their rich heritage.

After committing these crimes against humanity and destroying thousands of lives, on 31 January 1986, General Vaidya retired for a quiet life in Pune. On 10 August 1986, one day after the arrest of Bhai Manbeer Singh, the Khalistan Commando Force took revenge by killing the Chief of the Indian Army, General Vaidya.

Shaheeds: General Labh Singh, Bhai Charanjit Singh Channi, Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda and Bhai Gurjeet Singh

Under the command of General Labh Singh, the Khalistan Commando Force became a very popular fighting force and the number of organised groups fighting for Khalistan mushroomed. He was an exceptional organiser who centralised the Khalistan Commando Force by appointing six Lieutenant Generals as territory commanders. Under the Lieutenant Generals there were Area Commanders in charge of different districts. In the event of a Lieutenant General being killed or captured, the Area Commanders took over. Each of the Khalistan Commando Force cells contained 10 to 15 personnel, this would include weapons carriers, contact personnel and hit men. Each group was responsible to the high command and orders and directives were given to all personnel via the Lieutenant generals. During this time the Sikh Students Federation (S.S.F) supplied the activists and political manoeuvre and proved beneficial in the propagation of Khalistan ideology. The Khalisatan Commando Force was now in shape to expand its operations throughout the country. The finance was managed through collections and safe houses contributed with food, shelter and man power. General Labh Singh now concentrated on bringing to justice the perpetrators of the Delhi massacres in November 1984 when thousands of innocent Sikh men, women and children had been killed. The priority targets were the Congress (I) members who had incited Hindus to kill Sikhs. Two Members of Parliament, Lalit Makan and Arjan Das played a decisive role in planning, instigating and executing the heinous crimes of murder, loot, rape and arson against the Sikhs. The Khalistan Commando Force targeted these two and other Congress M.P’s involved in the riots. In the Summer of 1987, the Khalistan Commando Force struck terror in the hearts of these butchers, when it dispatched its active service units to seek justice from these killers. Where the courts and commissions failed, the Khalsa did not. Bhai Harjinder Singh Jinda and Bhai Sukhdev Singh Sukha took this honourable mission.

During this time, the support of the Punjabi people was clearly with the Sikh freedom struggle and this was evident from the help and support the public provided. In this time, there was also resurgence in Sikhi with thousands of people being baptised in to the Khalsa fold. Saffron turbans and flowing beards was a clear indication that the Sikh people wanted to demonstrate their distinct identity; even though the flowing beards and saffron turbans were targeted by the Indian security forces.

In 1987, the so called Akali Government brought in the next butcher of Punjab, Julio F Ribeiro as Director General of Punjab Police. He proved to be a tyrant. Riberio was infamous for the bloodshed he caused in Bombay and other cities. He was given a free hand in Punjab to pursue a policy of repression and this he did. He announced a policy of ‘bullet for bullet’ and this literally meant kill any Sikh whom he considered to be a terrorist without giving them a right to a trial (Not that a trial could not be stage-managed by the state given the corruption of the Indian judiciary). This warped man had not learnt from history that the Khalsa armies have fought greater armies tan his and that he would finally meet his match. Realising that the Sikh freedom fighters did not shy away from martyrdom, Ribeiro introduced the infamous Black Cats (State sponsored death squads).

After numerous fake encounters in which thousands of innocent Sikhs had been killed, General Labh Singh decided to give Ribeiro a surprise call. On 2 August 1987, General Labh Singh led a unit of the Khalistan Commando Force to attack Ribeiro at his own Headquarters in Jalandhar. Ribeiro was walking with his wife in the gardens when the Singh’s took aim and attacked him however, the coward fell to the floor and played dead. The Khalistan Commando Force freedom fighters, thinking they had finished the butcher of Punjab, made their escape. This attack left Ribeiro a nervous wreck and shortly after, Ribeiro retired and left Punjab for a safer place. In 1992 he was posted to Romania as High Commissioner. Here too, Sikh units were dispatched to bring him to justice. This action resulted in two Singhs, Bhai Jagroop Singh and Bhai Jaswinder Singh gaining martyrdom. Ribeiro however, was forced to go into hiding and resorted to an imprisonment under tight security.

Shaheed General Labh Singh

On 12 July 1988, the time had come for General Labh Singh to complete his mission and become once again with the Almighty. He was betrayed and arrested by a Police snatch squad. They tried in vain to break his resolve in order to get information on the hideouts of his fellow activists. With the grace of Waheguru, he didn’t utter a thing. He became another victim of Police torture and murder.

During the last few years under enormous pressure, hardships, continuous betrayals by certain corrupt ‘Sikh’ leaders, and due to the proper guidance which General Labh Singh, Bhai Sukhdev Singh Babbar, General Avtar Singh Brahma, Doctor Gurnam Singh Buttar and other alike gave the Khalistan movement, errors have been committed and attributed indiscriminately to our brothers in arms. Incipient elements of terrorism, traceable to autocratic tendencies have thus taken form. The culprits of such activity are rarely Sikh armed groups. It is clear the majority of the killings have been by state sponsored in an attempt to halt and discredit the Sikh freedom movement.

Over the past few years there has been an upsurge in the killing of innocent Sikhs and people belonging to other minority groups in India. The murder of innocent civilians is never acceptable and the injustices committed by the Indian regime should not be forgotten. General Labh Singh has become a hero of the Sikh people and a part of village folklore. What is needed today is for the Sikh people to recognise the martyrdom of the thousands of Sikhs whose only dream was the establishment of an independent Sikh state of Khalistan. It is now up to us, the present generation of Sikhs, to break the chains of slavery and keep the torch of freedom burning no matter how much injustices are committed by the Indians against us.

Shaheeds: Bhai Amarjeet Singh Billa and Bhai Shamsher Singh Shera

Shaheed Bhai Amarjeet Singh ‘Billa’ was born on November 6th 1967 at village Begowal, District Kapurthala. Bhai Sahib was initially a member of the AISSF, from which he went on to join the Khalistan Liberation Force.

Bhai Sahib was given the opportunity to escape to the USA where 2 of his brothers had emigrated to. After giving in to pressure from his family to leave India, Bhai Sahib left for Nepal from where he was due to escape to the USA. Upon reaching Nepal, Bhai Sahib knew the risks of returning home but still decided that he should follow his heart and return to Punjab to fight against the oppressors and tyrant leaders of the Hindustani Government.

Bhai Sahib gave up the chance to settle down abroad and lead a comfortable life, but his commitment and dedication to the freedom movement was not to be deterred. Bhai Sahib had a reward of 500,000 Rupees on his head.

On the 29th of June 1993 near Sri Hargobindpur in an encounter with the Police Bhai Sahib attained Shaheedi (Martyrdom).

Begowal is a small town in the Kapurthala district where my family also lived. Bhai Sahib protected the people in that area from the police officers who would often steal from the poor villagers and harass those sympathetic to the Freedom Fighters. The main perpetrators of this were officers stationed at Bholath Police Station.

The SP would send his own police officers disguised as Freedom Fighters to loot the innocents of the village, mainly those who had come from abroad (NRI’s)

In one case a Sikh families sons had come to visit from America in the summer of 1989, in a town only 5 miles away from Bhai Sahibs town.

During the night, whilst most of the family was attending a wedding function, the police officers disguised as Freedom Fighters entered the house and extorted money from the elders of the house, who had decided to stay at home. The officers claimed to be affiliated with the Khalistan Liberation Force (of whom Bhai Amarjeet Singh was the Lieutenant General). The officers demanded a ransom of 50,000 Rupees. The family gave them half of this amount and told them to return the next day for the remaining amount.

When the sons returned home from the wedding function the following, they were surprised to see their parents crying, and asked them what had happened. The parents told them of the incident which occurred the night before. The parents told them that members of the KLF had come round and threatened them and taken 25,000 Rupees and they would be returning tonight to take another 25,000 Rupees.

The youngest knew Bhai Amarjeet Singh personally and assured his family that the KLF would never stoop so low and it must have been an attempt by the police to defame the organisation. The son then went to visit Bhai Amarjeet Singh at the Begowal bus depot, where Bhai Sahib was always stationed, who then took him to visit Bhai Paramjeet Singh Panjwar. Bhai Panjwar assured the son that none of the men under his command would do such a thing and was certain that this was a ploy by the Punjab Police. Bhai Panjwar gave the son a letter and told him to present it to the ‘Freedom Fighters’ who were due to return to the house to collect the rest of the money. The son feared that if he showed the letter and exposed the police officers then his life could be in danger. He then asked if Bhai Amarjeet Singh and his men could stay the night at his house to protect his family should anything happen. Bhai Sahib agreed to do so, and along with his men spent the night on the roof of the house waiting for the fake freedom fighters.

The same police officers, from the previous night disguised as Freedom Fighters returned to the house and demanded the family pay the rest of the ransom. As the fake freedom fighters were demanding the money Bhai Sahib and his men jumped from the roof and landed in front of the disguised police officers. Bhai Sahib and his men aimed there weapons at the police officers and took them outside of the house and challenged the officers to fight him and his men.

Bhai Sahib shot and killed one of the officers and a shootout began, in which 2 officers were injured but managed to escape in their jeep. Bhai Sahib returned to the house and gave the youngest son a weapon for his protection, should any further problems arise, and requested to the family to follow the teachings of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and become his Sikhs.

In this manner Bhai Sahib helped many families in the Kapurthala area. Should anyone need his help Bhai Sahib could always be found at the Begowal bus depot, standing with his fellow Singh’s armed with an AK-47. The Punjab Police was also aware of where Bhai Sahib was based but never dared to attempt to capture Bhai Sahib.

After Bhai Sahib moved base, the Punjab Police in search of Bhai Sahib stormed his house and blew it apart with grenade attacks in which Bhai Sahib’s family member were injured including Bhai Sahib’s mother. After the Shaheedi (Martyrdom) of Bhai Sahib the police seized their family land. Bhai Sahib’s two brothers currently residing in the USA, annually hold an Akhand Path in the memory of Bhai Amarjeet Singh at his home town of Begowal.
