Recycle your old winter woolies with reknit

As we all know, recycling is a good thing, and a great little site we stumbled across lets you recycle your knitted goods in your wardrobe

Reknit is a nifty service run by a mother/daughter team in the US. Basically you send them your old knit jumper, they unravel it, and then mum reknits you something new – each month it’s a different item and you can vote on what next months reknit will be. At the risk of alienating my mother, I wish she would do something as cool as this.

Get it quick though, as per the website ‘*because i only have one mom, we’ve decided to limit orders to the first 30′

We received a very interesting email yesterday from one of our newsletter subscriptions – Ella Bleu Jewellery is selling two sets of earrings – and you set the price you’re willing to pay.

Being held at new Australian site, Pay What You Want, you simply log on, check out the earrings (we can vouch for the quality as we actually own the classic round earrings and they are really very pretty IRL) and then enter the price you are willing to pay.

For those that are familiar with Lentil As Anything restaurants, it’s the exact same process, and you can pay via Paypal. It looks to be a fairly new site, there isn’t much listed in the previous PWYW, but one we’ll be watching with interest!

Nails 101: Grow and Strengthen your nails

Nails are a wonderful. They’re like shoes, when all else fails you can paint your nails for a bit of a lift (god knows, nails, like shoes, never make you feel fat). But whilst you don’t neccesarily need super long talons, decent length, strong healthy nails do require some work. Here’s how to get them…

Healthy Bodies = Healthy Nails

Just like your hair, your nails will reflect your general health. So if you really are struggling to grow strong healthy nails, start with sorting our your general health. Your nails (actually your whole body) will thank you.

Nail biting is bad

I’m not so great on this, I have to admit, it’s a stress thing for me. But you won’t get beautiful nails if you gnaw away at them. You can invest in something like Stop N Grow, a clear foul tasting nail polish, however I’ve found the a combination of fear factor (consider the number of germs you are placing in your mouth when you do it – would you put your foot in your mouth?) and paying attention to my nails by starting to care for them before they grow, has had a big impact.

Get the tools of the trade

Invest in the tools you need to maintain your nails. You can spend as little or a lot as you want. Personally, we’re a sucker for the super cute Juicy Loves Sephora set (US$25) but you can also invest in the Tweezerman Manicure Solution Kit, $76AUD from Skincarestore.com.au

Another good idea is to invest in gloves for when you do the dishes (or a maid, but gloves are probably cheaper). Detergent are harsh on your nails and skin, so protect them.

A great and yummy smelling hand and nail cream is also a must. Currently I’m loving Wilb Bath Body & Home’s Mademoiselle Antoinette Velvet Hand and Nail Balm. It’s full of goodness and smells absolutely divine.

Here at NSO, we practice what we preach (it gives us a legitimate excuse to go shopping). This morning, my 3 year old was incredibly excited when the postman brought a beautifully wrapped parcel from Little Pinwheel, containing a lovely little frock and this totally awesome book. Written by Nicole Mandile, it’s illustrated by…you! (Well, your kids, anyway).

The story is a fantasical journey through the Super Galactic Zoo, where the monkeys are purple and the elephants are yellow; where the zebras are spotty and the tigers are dotty! There’s also plenty of chances to sign your name throughout the book, instantly turning little artists into full-blown illustrators.
