Nevis Island Premier – Joseph Parry

Charlestown, Nevis
September 06, 2010

Premier and Minister of Education , Hon. Joseph Parry encouraged teachers to be well read, to improve their quality of teaching that would produce a more well rounded student. He made the statement on Wednesday at the Back to school exercise at the Nevis Cultural Center in Charlestown.

The Premier was of the belief that besides the basic subjects of English, Math, Science and History, current events and world views should come into play. He said it was important for Teachers to read newspapers from other nations, read daily updates on the world economy and watch television programmes that would give a “feel” of what was going on in the world.

According to Premier Parry, students should be able to think for themselves. He said one of the major highlights of true education was for people to be able to think for themselves and reveal ideas and references for solid debate.

“One of the great things about a solid education is that people think and are able to put ideas together and come up with their own solutions,” commented Premier Parry.

During the Back to School exercise, Principal Education Officer, Mrs. Lornette Queeley Connor, in her brief remarks urged teachers to improve the quality of service that they deliver

“Let us be reminded that the quality of school teachers will first make the effort to evaluate themselves then teach students how to evaluate their own work. Teachers in a quality school would not nag but they would send out a message that almost everyone can be a success. Our children need us now more than ever.

Let us resolve through our combined efforts to build a future for our children and our children’s children,” said Mrs. Connor.

The Charlestown Pre-School Expansion

Charlestown, Nevis
September 06, 2010

Amidst the cries of newcomers and the smiles of returners, students of the government-owned Charlestown Pre School started the 2010-2011 academic year in a recently upgraded facility.

The Charlestown Pre School, located at Stoney Grove opened its doors to the public in 1983 with a roll of 20 and has since upgraded to accommodating 65 students.

The expansion made it possible for the school to accommodate an additional 15 students. It now houses an office area and an additional classroom.

Mingling with parents and comforting crying children today, was Principal Education Officer, Mrs. Lornette Queeley-Connor who was excited about the completed expansion project and said that the timing for such a project was accurate.

“It [the extension] comes in direct response to the community’s immediate needs. We had an overextension of potential registrants and the supervisor, Mrs. Brenda Williams, saw it fit to make a bid for extra space here at the Charlestown Pre School,” Mrs. Queeley-Connor said.

She also recorded her appreciation to the local government for its role in the school’s expansion.

“Thanks to the Nevis Island Administration [NIA] for acting in such quick response to our needs, the needs of the Department of Education, the needs of the people of our community as they have seen it fit to come forward and to listen to the pleas of the supervisor and the teachers and parents here at the Charlestown Pre School,” she said.

The Charlestown Pre School is one of three government owned pre schools on Nevis and caters to families that reside and work in and around Charlestown.

Supervisor of the Charlestown Pre School Mrs. Brenda Smithen-Williams believed the expansion would bring benefits to the people of Nevis and particularly the immediate community the school serves.

“I think it’s a great help for the community on a whole because the government provides quality service at the cheapest rate on the market.

“At the Charlestown area: the main working area in Nevis, there is always a demand for space. Because of the age of the children we cater for parents prefer their young children to be close to them,” Williams said.

The school also received new kitchen cupboards, a stove, a refrigerator and an additional cook near the end of the 2009-2010 academic year.

Meantime, PEO Connor said that plans were in place for the construction of another Early Childhood Centre in the St. Paul’s area.

Supervisor Williams, who had been in the Early Childhood field for many years said she was looking forward to advances in her line of work.

“I think it’s a great idea because there is coming a time when we’ll also need government nurseries for the younger children, the babies, and I guess when we have a new pre school, they will be able to use this preschool as a nursery in the future,” Williams said.

Students Receive Scholarships From Cuban Government

Charlestown, Nevis
September 06, 2010

Three Nevisian students left the island on Friday for Cuba to pursue studies in the medical field at the La Escuela Latino Americana De Medicina in Havana. Ms. Michelle Lawrence, Ms. Donna Pemberton and Mr. Elijah Thompson who received Cuban scholarships and financial assistance from the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), joined their counterparts from St. Kitts who also received Cuban scholarships to study medicine.

Minister of Health in the NIA Hon. Hensley Daniel said in a recent interview with the Department of Information prior to the student’s departure, that it was the first time three students had left at once to pursue studies in varied areas of medicine in Cuba.

He said it was as a result of many discussions with former Cuban Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis Her Excellency Anna Maria Gonzales and her predecessor H.E Jorge Desiderio Payret Zurbiaur and the NIA’s insistence that it was necessary to take advantage of the opportunity for Nevis students to pursue careers in medicine.

“I want to record my thanks to the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba and the people of Cuba for affording us the opportunity to pursue careers in medicine. I want to urge the students to make the very best of the opportunity and I believe in time they will be speaking Spanish and they will be in time serving us.

“I want them to go with the blessings of the Ministry of Health, the Nevis Island Administration and the families and communities of which they come will be very proud of them,” he said.

Mr. Daniel wished the students well in their undertaking and told them that Cuba had a competitive and comparative advantage in medicine and was one of the leading countries in tropical medicine research.

The Health Minister deemed it a great opportunity for the students at their age (below 25) to be afforded the opportunity to pursue medicine in Cuba, an island that had surpassed many countries in the world in terms of its quality of health care.

Meantime, Permanent Secretary in the Human Resource Department of the Premier’s Ministry Mr. Chesley Manners who was also present explained that the Cuban Government had offered 10 medical scholarships to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis (five each to male and female students).

“The scholarship covers tuition a stipend of 60 pesos per month, meals room and board and the Nevis Island Administration would provide airfare to Cuba and airfare from Cuba on completion of their studies and also subsistence allowance in the amount of US$2,200 per year,” he said.

Mr. Manners also registered his gratitude to the Cuban Government for their continued assistance to the development of the human resource capital on Nevis, particularly in the area of health which was a top priority for the NIA.

The Permanent Secretary said he was pleased that the three students had shown a keen interest in an area that the NIA had been trying to improve. He explained that many persons in the area of health had been imported to fill vacant positions on Nevis.

“So we are grateful that these three Nevisians have shown a keen interest in the area of medicine and so we can only wish them well and we hope they go there and work hard and that at the end of the day they would come back home and be very much enthused and very much motivated to serve their country,” he said.

However, he noted that it was not the first time that students in Nevis had benefitted from the Cuban gesture.

“We had Mr. Deora Pemberton who did Engineering, Mr. Rawlston Archibald and Ms. Veron Brooks who would have done studies in Dentistry. We have Cleo Smithen Romany who did Medicine and she is now specialising in the area of Paediatrics. We have also Ms. Shara Maynard who did Accounting and Mr. Bentley Bissette who is presently pursuing studies in the area of Sports Education,” he said.

In response Ms. Lawrence who spoke on behalf or the other two students thanked all those who made it possible for their opportunity to pursue studies in medicine in Cuba.
