Senior Foreign Service Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Berridge, is representing St. Kitts and Nevis at a series of preparatory meetings prior to the Second CARICOM-Mexico Summit in Barbados.

Trade, investment, tourism and cooperation will feature prominently when Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders meet with their Mexican counterpart in Barbados on Monday.

According to an official statement issued by the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat, the second CARICOM-Mexico summit is being preceded by a meeting of the CARICOM-Mexico Joint Commission on Saturday and a meeting of the Foreign Ministers on Sunday.

Mexico was the first country to form a Joint Commission with the Community having signed the agreement in 1974, the statement said, noting that the first summit between the two parties was held in 2010 in Mexico.

It said during the Barbados summit, the regional leaders “will also take the opportunity to impress upon the Mexican President His Excellency Felipe Calderon the importance of Mexico continuing to advocate on the Community’s behalf with respect to reform of the International Financial Institutions (IFI) at a meeting of the G20 which Mexico will be hosting next June”.

Last month, the regional leaders during a brief meeting with President Calderon in Cartagena, Colombia, had expressed concerns that since many CARICOM countries are classified as small highly indebted middle income countries they are prohibited from accessing the concessional facilities and instruments from the IFIs.

CARICOM Chairman His Excellency Desi Bouterse, who is also the President of Suriname, President Calderon and CARICOM Secretary-General His Excellency Irwin LaRocque will address the opening ceremony of the Summit on Monday at 10.30 a.m. (local time).

“Relations between CARICOM and Mexico are based on an agreement signed in Kingston, Jamaica in 1974, whose objective is to identify and promote cooperation initiatives in order to enlarge economic, political and cultural relations.

“This was advanced in 2009 during the Fifth Meeting of the Joint Commission when both sides signed a declaration in which they expressed their commitment to promote cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, air and maritime transport, financial services, security, health, energy and climate change,” the CARICOM Secretariat said.

The Republic of China (Taiwan), although poised to propelling itself into another level of development, has never forgotten the long path it has travelled.

So says Taiwan’s Resident Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Miguel Tsao during a reception in honour of Sunday’s inauguration of President His Excellency Ma Ying-jeou, and Vice President, His Excellency Wu Den-yih, former Premier.

He told Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Cabinet ministers, the Speaker of the National Assembly and senior government officials that during his first term, President Ma farsightedly outlined the role for Taiwan in the international community.

“A peacemaker, a provider of humanitarian aid, a promoter of cultural ties, a creator of new technologies and business opportunities, and the standard bearer of Chinese culture. Tangible achievements in these fields as well as in the cross strait relationship with mainland China reflected favorably on the Presidential elections in January, and the result has won President Ma another four-year term to further fulfill his mandate,” said Ambassador Tsao.

He pointed out that as recently as in early April, when speaking at an American Chamber of Commerce Taipei banquet, President Ma shared his thoughts on how Taiwan can and must further build up its global competitiveness.

“The five undertakings which are to form the pillars of this grand national development include trade liberalization, comprehensive restructuring of major industries, rationalization of utility rates, internationalization of education system, and attracting foreign talent to enrich domestic labor pool,” said the Taiwan diplomat.

“Over the course of few decades, Taiwan has gone from a recipient of international aid to a donor today. Looking back, we are forever grateful for the helping hand that helped Taiwan stand on its feet in the past; looking into the future, we cherish those who have been with us all these years and look forward to strengthening our friendship with them,” said Ambassador Tsao, who expressed pride to have the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis as a close ally.

“We thank you, Hon. Prime Minister, and your administration, for your long time staunch support in international arenas such as WHA, UN, International Aviation Organization (ICAO) and United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC),” he said.

Ambassador Tsao pledged Taiwan’s “commitment to continue working with you for the mutual interests and well-being of our two peoples.

Working hand-in-hand, let us make our two countries stand out and glow together. Taiwan and St. Kitts and Nevis are small countries, if we work and put together, we will be tallawah,” he said.

Taiwan’s President – Ma Ying-Jeou

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
May 19, 2012 (CUOPM)

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has praised Taiwan’s President His Excellency Ma Ying-Jeou, who will be sworn in for a second consecutive term on Sunday, for strengthening bi-lateral relations with St. Kitts and Nevis.

In remarks Friday during a reception at the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on Friday to celebrate President Ma’s inauguration, Prime Minister Douglas said the recent elections is an affirmation of Taiwan’s adherence to the most time-honoured of democratic principles – that the Government serves at the will of the people.

“It is an impressive and important affirmation of the people of Taiwan’s faith in the vision and leadership of President Ma Ying-Jeou, in general, and his astute management of the Taiwanese economy during this period of unprecedented global turbulence, for the safety and benefit of the Taiwanese people, in particular,” said Dr. Douglas during the ceremony attended by all Cabinet Ministers, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Permanent Secretaries and senior government officials.

Dr. Douglas said President Ma Ying-Jeou ensured, during his previous term, that relations between the Republic of China on Taiwan and its bilateral partners were not only steadfastly nurtured, but that they were, indeed, strengthened, in that spirit of mutual respect and sincere friendship.

The Prime Minister express regret that he is unable to attend the Inauguration on Sunday and deliver to deliver, in person, the best wishes of the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“However, this weekend is the most important on the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party calendar, signaling, as it does, the holding of our annual conference, in which the leadership of our national Party is elected. And as the Political Leader of the Party, I must be in the Federation at this time,” he said, pointing out that he will be represented in Taipei by the Governor General’s Deputy of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis, Sir Edmund and Lady Hulda Lawrence.

“On behalf of the Government and people of St. Kitts-Nevis, then, I once again extend heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Government and people of the Republic of China on Taiwan on the occasion of the inauguration of their duly elected leader, His Excellency President Ma Ying-Jeou for a second consecutive term,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

Approximately 50 nurses and nursing students were motivated to become effective leaders that forge positive change in patient care, relationships with colleagues and professionalism across the board.

Dr. Marion Howard, Ambassador of the Commonwealth Federation of Nurses (CFN) and CFN Representative responsible for the Atlantic Region, facilitated a Leadership Workshop in St. Kitts on May 14 and 15 as part of local activities in commemoration of Nurses Week 2012. Nurses Week is being held under the theme: “Closing the Gap – From Evidence to Practice” and Dr. Howard revealed to the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service that the workshop itself was designed to fill a particular need.

“That is why we are here in St. Kitts working with the Nurses Association to help them develop themselves as leaders, especially because they are the ones who have to take their profession forward,” Dr. Howard emphasized. “Only nurses can articulate nursing needs and we have committed ourselves to be the voice for nursing so we have to give them the tools to be able to do their job effectively.”

The CFN Representative further noted that the workshop topics included discussions on the various leadership theories as well as self-exploration on individual potential for leadership. The outcome of the training session included the identification of five projects designed to bring about change in the nursing profession as well as in the wider community over several years.

Cerena Browne, a Critical Care Registered Nurse at the Joseph N. France (JNF) General Hospital, Nurse of the Year and the Public Relations Officer of the St. Kitts Nurses Association gave her view of the sessions.

“This workshop has been very beneficial to us in that we are learning a lot more about how to be a leader as a nurse, an advocate as a nurse, and how to be a professional nurse, as we go about improving the standards and ethical principles of the entire nursing profession,” Ms. Browne noted.

Dorpha Seabrookes, Student Nurse at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant (CFB) College was of a similar opinion.

“The workshop today was very beneficial to me,” Ms. Seabrookes revealed. “It showed me the importance of being a leader and how to manage my patients and how to develop attitudes and attributes of a leader in order to provide quality patient care to the individual and their families at large, and also to be a great leader for my colleagues.”

Nurses Week continued last Wednesday with “Tea Delight” which was a tea party and sideshow, Friday was Community Outreach where nursing professions erected a tent close to Shoreline and offered glucose and hypertension screening as well as counseling to passers-by. On Saturday, the week comes to an exciting close with a 20/20 Cricket Match “Nurses vs. Doctors” at the LIME Grounds, Needsmust. Admission is $2.00.
