Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. The JBC is preparing for upcoming contract negotiations with GE Appliances, headquarters in Louisville, KY. The JBC Master Agreement represents unionized Service Technicians from the IAM, IBEW, UA and UE who work out of service vans across the country.

The intensive Negotiation Preparation Program brought together shop committee members and negotiating committee representatives for several days of strategic training, research analysis, and coordinated bargaining with multiple unions. The program is designed to ensure JBC unions enter bargaining united, informed, and ready to secure strong contracts for their members.

Participants worked through contract language review, proposal development, costing exercises, and communication planning. A strong emphasis was placed on member engagement ensuring that the priorities at the bargaining table reflect the voices of the membership on the shop floor.

Throughout the program, committees collaborated across locals to identify common challenges and share best practices. From protecting wages and benefits to strengthening job security and workplace protections, the focus remained on building coordinated strategies to address the issues most important to JBC families.

“This training gives our negotiating committees the tools and confidence they need to fight for the best possible agreement,” said IAM Union Collective Bargaining Director Craig Norman. “Preparation is power, and when we walk into negotiations, we do so with a clear strategy and the full strength of our membership behind us.”

The Winpisinger Center, the IAM’s premier training facility, continues to play a critical role in equipping union leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to meet today’s challenges.

“We are extremely motivated to bring union representation to more and more federal workers in the National Parks and Forest Service,” said IAM Resident General Vice President Jody Bennett. “Federal workers have been under attack by the current administration, and we are determined to bring the security of a union contract to the dedicated people who maintain and conserve our nation’s protected lands.”

The organizing effort was largely driven by the employees themselves, with the help of their already unionized coworkers Robin Wignall, a Wildland Hydrologist, and Giovanni Lopez, a Wildland Firefighter—both NFFE-IAM members.

Jerry McCarty, the IAM Assistant Organizer Coordinator who coordinated the process of union representation for the group, highlighted the grassroots nature of the campaign.

“This was an employee-driven effort,” said McCarty. “The workers felt the need for a union to protect their rights and improve their working conditions.”

Amid the current administration’s attacks on federal workers, the IAM Organizing Department has been strategically organizing workers across National Parks and the Forest Service since early 2025.

“The successful unionization of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest employees is a testament to the power and importance of union representation,” said IAM Assistant Organizing Director Juan Eldridge. “Our organizers and our members are on-the-ground in the national parks and forests, showing potential members the real benefits of a union in the federal sector. I hope this victory, previous ones, and the ones to come serve as inspiration for the unorganized federal workers out there.”

READ: U.S. National Park Service Workers Vote Overwhelmingly to Join NFFE-IAM

McCarty emphasized Wignall’s initiative and dedication, noting that she spearheaded the campaign by gathering interest and conducting outreach through Zoom meetings.

“They already knew there was a contract that would cover them as soon as they got the union vote in,” said McCarty.

Employees who win their union in an election are immediately covered by the NFFE-IAM’s Master Agreement with the U.S. Forest Service.

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is one of the largest national forests in the United States, and the union agreement provides a considerable improvement from previous conditions. The rapidly growing desire for employment security through union representation comes as President Trump has unlawfully tried to eliminate federal workers’ jobs and his administration has torn up collective bargaining agreements for federal workers.

“This victory reflects a growing momentum among Forest Service workers,” said McCarty. “With the political climate and recent attacks on unions, employees are feeling the urgency to organize.”

READ: Workers at Yosemite, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks Organize a Union Under NFFE-IAM

The campaign, which began in the summer of 2025, faced several challenges, including delays due to government shutdowns. However, the determination of the employees led to a nearly unanimous vote in favor of the union.

As the IAM continues to expand its reach within the federal sector, the focus will remain on empowering all eligible workers.

“We’ve got less than 3,000 Forest Service workers left who are union eligible,” said McCarty. “We’re committed to organizing them all.”

The conversation carried added urgency as delegates discussed the recent layoffs at Whirlpool Corporation facilities in Iowa, where job cuts have impacted IAM families and sent shockwaves through surrounding communities. Leaders emphasized that protecting good-paying manufacturing jobs in Iowa will remain a top priority heading into 2026.

Take Action: Tell Whirlpool American Workers Deserve a Future, Not Layoffs

IAM International President Brian Bryant joined the delegation and delivered a forward looking message focused on unity, engagement, and accountability as the 2026 election cycle accelerates.

“Working people are facing high-stakes decisions in 2026,” said Bryant. “That means we organize harder, communicate clearer, and make sure every IAM member understands what’s on the line for their job, their contract, and their family.”

Bryant emphasized that the IAM’s political work remains rooted in issues not party labels.

“We don’t play politics for the sake of politics,” said Bryant. “We support candidates that stand shoulder to shoulder with IAM members and who are willing to fight for good jobs, strong contracts, and retirement security.”

He also pointed to the union’s recent gains and reminded delegates that member engagement is the IAM’s greatest strength.

“When we put our members first and stay focused on delivering real results, we win,” said Bryant. “No union invests more in educating, protecting, and supporting its membership than the IAM.”

Bryant highlighted the wide range of member-focused programs, including training opportunities at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center, Veterans Services, Critical Incident Response Training, the Employee Assistance and Addiction Services programs, the Human Rights Department, Disaster Relief efforts, and Retiree programs all designed to strengthen members on and off the job.

“Momentum doesn’t happen by accident, it is built by members who stay informed, stay involved, and stand united,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “In Iowa and across the Midwest, we’re building real power at the grassroots level so when decisions are made that affect our jobs and our families, IAM members have a strong, organized voice at the table.”

Cicinelli noted that the recent Whirlpool layoffs serve as a reminder that corporate decisions made in boardrooms can have immediate consequences for working families, underscoring why political engagement and economic advocacy remain critical for Iowa Machinists.

Charlie Wishman, President of the Iowa Federation of Labor, thanked the State Council and local activists for their continued leadership and mobilization efforts.

“When working families need someone in their corner, the Machinists show up,” said Wishman. “You organize, you mobilize, and you never back down from a fight that matters.”

Rick Moyle, President of the IAM Iowa State Council, presided over the meeting, leading delegates through council business, including the election of the executive board. Bryant administered the oath of office to the newly elected leaders, closing the gathering with a renewed commitment to solidarity, activism, and building power in the months ahead.

As Iowa Machinists return to their locals, the message was clear, 2026 will demand focus, discipline, and unity and the IAM stands ready.

As our membership continues to grow and diversify, the IAM’s Spanish Leadership I Class encourages members to step up and take on greater leadership roles – building the confidence and skills needed to better represent, advocate for, and stand alongside every member on the job.

The next Spanish Leadership I Class will be held April 19-24, 2026, at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. The program is open to all IAM members and staff.

The registration deadline for this class has been extended to March 25.

Members interested in attending should contact their Local President, Business Representative, or General Chair as soon as possible.

Fluency in Spanish is not required, but an understanding of the Spanish language is a plus.

While all classroom instruction, books, and materials are presented in Spanish, the curriculum mirrors the content of the English Leadership programs. The focus is on building leadership skills while strengthening our ability to connect with Spanish-speaking members and communities.

The Spanish-language programs at the Winpisinger Center are coordinated and developed by the Spanish Language Working Group (SLWG), which is composed of IAM staff and members. The program covers a wide range of subjects designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective union leadership. Some of the topics include labor history, parliamentary procedure in local administration, the role of the steward, human rights, the importance of organizing, and government and politics.

Since its inception, the Spanish Leadership Program has been founded in inclusivity. It creates a welcoming space for members who may face language barriers, while also encouraging participants who simply have the desire to engage and stand in solidarity with our siblings whose primary language is Spanish.

Openings remain available for all Spanish Leadership programs – and participation does not count against your Local’s regular Leadership school allotment.

Important Dates for the Spanish Programs in 2026

Spanish Advanced Leadership: Nov. 15-20

The IAM continues to lead the labor movement in offering comprehensive education and leadership development in multiple languages, ensuring that no worker is left behind. Through programs in English, Spanish, and French, the IAM provides every member with the tools and knowledge to grow, organize, and advance within our union and the broader movement for working people.

Watch Video Here.

The Local ceremony, held in Waycross, Ga., marked what union leaders described as a reclamation of the IAM’s historical identity. The redesignation honors the original 19 machinists who met in a railroad pit in Atlanta in 1888 under the leadership of Thomas Talbot to establish what would become one of the largest rail unions in the world.

Previously known as IAM Local 625, the Waycross-based local was first chartered in 1933 and carried that designation for 97 years. Union officials characterized the transition to “Local 1” as a tribute to the IAM’s origins and a symbolic gesture tying today’s membership to the organization’s earliest roots.

Curtis W. Taylor, a retired machinist with more than four decades of service, said the renaming was long overdue. Taylor, who hired on in 1967 and worked 41.5 years in the railroad industry, remarked that the Waycross local “should have been [Number 1] all the time,” citing its historic ties to the union’s founding state of Georgia.

Headquartered in Waycross, Local 1 currently represents more than 250 members, primarily serving railroad workers across the Southeastern United States. The Local plays a central role in supporting workers connected to freight operations and locomotive maintenance in the region.

Union leadership conducted a site visit to the CSX Transportation locomotive facility and service center in Waycross as part of the re-chartering events. The facility is known for producing and maintaining locomotives critical to freight transportation throughout the country.

The visit included Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the International President; Reece Murtagh, President and Directing General Chair of District 19; and Jason Gibbs, General Chair. Officials toured the shop floor, met with members, discussed working conditions with management, and observed day-to-day operations.

Murtagh described Local 1 as a “strong” and “fighting” Local, emphasizing the importance of leadership maintaining direct contact with members and ensuring workplace standards remain high.

Local 1 operates out of a historic union hall in Waycross, a former church purchased collectively by members who pooled their resources. The building is owned free and clear and is recognized as part of the Waycross Historical Society, underscoring the Local’s longstanding presence in the community.

Jamie Crews, President and Local Chair of Local 1, expressed pride in carrying forward the 1888 tradition and thanked international auditing committees and executive boards for their support throughout the transition process.

Union leaders framed the change not as a simple administrative update, but as a restoration of historical continuity. By aligning the Waycross local with the legacy of Talbert and the original 19 machinists, the IAM reinforces its deep roots in Georgia while maintaining its operational focus on supporting railroad workers across the Southeast.

For members in Waycross, the new charter reflects both heritage and ongoing commitment — a reminder that the union founded in a railroad pit more than a century ago continues to shape the lives of working machinists today.

Although the State Council’s official meeting is scheduled for late May, council leadership organized the lobby day to coincide with Kentucky’s legislative session in January and February — ensuring IAM members had the opportunity to engage elected officials while key decisions were being made.

“We had a great lobbying day,” said IAM Union Kentucky State Council President Chris Harrington, who organized the event. “If we had 18 to 20 members this year, we need 36 to 40 next year.”

“The Kentucky State Council is doing great engaging members and making sure they are prepared and have the confidence to speak with elected officials about issues that are impacting workers,” said IAM Southern Territory General Vice President Craig Martin. “We need to keep the energy up to continue building worker power across the state, and the entire South.”

This year’s lobby day marked significant growth in participation. In 2025, five members attended. This year, 18 rank-and-file members from six different IAM locals — Local 219, Local 681, Local 830, Local 1294, Local 1720, and Local 1969–made the trip to Frankfort.

“It’s not just me,” Harrington said. “It’s all of our leadership in Kentucky. The locals were supportive. The locals sent their people and paid lost time for them to be there. It was a great effort all around.”

The day began with a morning strategy session, including coordination with the Kentucky AFL-CIO to review legislative talking points. Members then met directly with legislators before regrouping for an afternoon debrief to assess progress and plan next steps.

IAM Southern Territory Special Representative Ryan McCarthy, a former Kentucky State Council president, joined members throughout the day to speak with legislators.

IAM members focused on several critical issues impacting working families in Kentucky:

Repeal of Right-to-Work: Members discussed House and Senate legislation aimed at repealing Kentucky’s right-to-work law: Senate Bill 161 and House Bill 585 – Repeal “Right to Work”

Buy America / Build America Protections: Members advocated for HB 472 – The Kentucky Buy America Act to strengthen domestic manufacturing requirements to ensure taxpayer dollars support American jobs.

Unemployment Insurance Reform: A major point of discussion centered on rolling back recent changes to Kentucky’s unemployment system that have made it more difficult for laid-off workers to access benefits. Current rules require workers to make multiple weekly job search contacts — a burden that affects not only workers but also employers fielding calls from “potential” employees who expect to return to their previous jobs once temporary layoffs or retooling periods end.

Harrington noted that the lobby day’s growth in participation reflects a renewed awareness among members about the importance of political engagement.

“I think the labor movement is coming to the forefront, and our membership is starting to see the important issues that we have to get out there and stand up for,” Harrington said.

While legislative battles remain uphill, the Kentucky State Council’s expanding lobby day demonstrates growing momentum and commitment among IAM members to advocate for policies that protect workers and strengthen unions.

Vigliotta, a production machinery mechanic at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and member of IAM Local 836, is running to address affordability challenges and strengthen wages and working conditions for working families across the district.

“Mark Vigliotta has spent his career fighting for working families at the shipyard and in the halls of government,” said IAM Maine State Council President Anthony Leeman. “He understands the challenges our members face because he’s lived them, and we are proud to unanimously endorse him to bring that voice to the Maine Senate.”

Vigliotta said his campaign is focused on delivering results for working people in District 33.

“I am running to make life more affordable for working people, improve the tax code and pass worker-friendly laws that support well-paying, good quality jobs with benefits,” said Vigliotta. “More people from Sanford are employed at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard than any other city or town in Maine or New Hampshire. I know their needs because I represented them as a union leader at the shipyard. Now I want to be able to represent them in Augusta.”

Vigliotta says he is very disappointed with his current Senator Matt Harrington for voting against legislation to make state-backed, no-interest loans available to federal workers during government shutdowns. Harrington, who is also the Assistant Senate Republican Leader, has a 0 percent score on the most recent Maine AFL-CIO Working Families Legislative Scorecard.

“For Matt Harrington not to vote for this bill to support his constituents when they are furloughed or forced to work without pay during a government shutdown is just unacceptable,” said Vigliottta.

Vigliotta served as shop steward and was later elected President of IAM Local 836. A few years later, he was elected President of the Portsmouth Metal Trades Council, which represents about 3,000 blue collar trades workers at the shipyard.

“Mark is a proven leader who has stood shoulder to shoulder with our members and fought for fairness and respect on the job,” said IAM Union Eastern Territory General Vice President David Sullivan. “He will be a powerful voice for working people in the Maine Senate.”

Vigliotta began working at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 2003 and has served as President of IAM Local 836, President of the Portsmouth Metal Trades Council, President of IAM District 4, and President of the IAM Maine State Council. He currently serves as an associate organizer for the IAM.

“Mark Vigliotta represents the very best of our union — a skilled tradesman, a tireless advocate, and a leader who never forgets where he comes from,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “The IAM Union is proud to support him as he seeks to serve working families in Maine.”
