Current Sermon Series

I Am Second

In our culture we want to win. We want to be in the record books. We want notoriety. We want recognition. It is so ingrained in us. We hear about famous athletes, who almost on a weekly basis are willing to break the rules and take banned substances in order to be winners. Why do people do these things? Because they want to be first; they want to be in first place; they want to be most important; they want people to recognize them.

Jesus says God is first, not us. God is first, period. When an attorney asked Jesus what was the most important commandment in all of the Bible, Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy 6:5, a passage with which this lawyer was surely familiar, "…love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength."

I Am Second is a way of living well. I Am Second is a way of living like Jesus Christ. I Am Second means that we follow God's direction in our lives, according to His Word, regardless of consequences and regardless of the cost.

This summer, we are going to talk about people from within Scripture who learned that God is first and they were second, how this applies to us as we live our lives day in and day out, and how it applies to us at work, at home, and in our interaction with other believers.

The people you will see on the home page of this website and on the front of the Sunday Bulletin throughtout this series are just a few of the people serving within the body. They are not more important than anyone else, they are merely among those Jesus called the greatest, saying "…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant and whoever wants to be first must be your slave, just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:26-28)
