Switzerland is getting new banknotes. And honestly, they sound like something worth getting excited about.

The Swiss National Bank has picked a winner for the next generation of Swiss francs. The new notes will look different, tell a new story, and come packed with even more security features. The catch? You will not be holding them until the early 2030s.

Here is everything you need to know.

No midlife crisis for the current Swiss franc notes

The current ninth series launched between 2016 and 2019. The average lifespan of a Swiss banknote series is around 15 to 20 years. So, today's notes are actually still in perfectly good shape.

SNB president Martin Schlegel put it best back in October 2025: "I can assure you that the current notes are not having a midlife crisis."

That said, the development of a new series takes several years. While your 20-franc note is not going anywhere soon, the SNB is already deep into building its replacement. On March 4, 2026, SNB representatives Sébastien Kraenzlin and Antoine Martin announced the winner at the SNB's Zurich headquarters.

Six finalists were still in the running. The winners: Fabienne Kilchör and Sébastien Fasel from the Lausanne design studio Emphase Sàrl.

Why Switzerland Is Redesigning Its Banknotes

Switzerland takes its cash seriously. Dare I say more? Cash payments have declined from 70 percent in 2017 to 30 percent. Yet, most Swiss people want to keep cash around. I always carry cash in my wallet, although I am guilty of using credit cards or Twint most of the time...

The SNB has a clear job: make sure banknotes stay secure, practical, and one step ahead of anyone trying to fake them. That means regularly updating the series with better technology, better security features, and a fresh design.

The current ninth series, designed by Zurich graphic artist Manuela Pfrunder, launched between 2016 and 2019. It was a big deal at the time, and it still holds up.

But then again, technology moves fast. You can read about what made the ninth series so impressive in our post on the security features of Swiss banknotes. The tenth series now has to raise that bar.

There is also a political backdrop. On March 8, 2026, Switzerland voted on a "cash initiative" that wanted to write coins and banknotes into the federal constitution. The Federal Council said no to the initiative but offered a counter-proposal to protect the SNB's duty to supply cash.

The SNB announced its winning banknote design just days before the vote. Now, whether or not this was coincidence or simply timing, it sent a clear message: the Swiss franc in physical form is not going away. And personally, I'm glad, because I have so many memories of Swiss coins and bills going all the way back to my childhood...

Emphase Wins the Swiss Banknote Design Competition

The new series will be designed by Emphase Sàrl, a studio from Lausanne run by Fabienne Kilchör and Sébastien Fasel. Their concept, called Concept J, came out on top after a serious competition.

Here is how it worked:

• More than 300 designers applied
• 12 studios were invited to submit full concepts
• A six-member expert jury evaluated all 12 proposals
• Over 100,000 people voted in a public survey
• Concept J landed in the top three in both the jury and public rankings
• When commercial and organisational criteria were added, Concept J had the best overall result

The jury included specialists from the University of St. Gallen, the Federal Office of Culture, and Swiss design and printing organisations. This was not just a vote on what looks nice. It was a serious assessment covering design quality, technical feasibility, and real-world production.

Emphase now has a formal mandate to develop the entire tenth series along with the SNB's internal specialists.

"Switzerland and Its Altitudes"
(What the Theme Actually Means)

Every studio in the competition worked with the same brief from the SNB: "Switzerland and Its Altitudes." (German: Die Schweiz und ihre Höhenlagen)

The idea is to take Switzerland's most defining physical feature (around 70 percent of the country is mountains) and turn it into a visual system across all six denominations. From the flattest lowlands to the highest peaks, each note belongs to a different altitude zone.

Here's a breakdown of what this means:

• Smaller denominations (CHF 10, CHF 20) connect to low-altitude environments: the Mittelland, rivers, the Jura
• Mid-range values (CHF 50, CHF 100) cover pre-alpine areas, lakes, and hillside towns
• Higher values (CHF 200, CHF 1000) go all the way up into the Alps: glaciers, rock faces, high passes

Pick up a 10-franc note and you are at the river. Pull out a 1000-franc note and you are at the summit. Kinda cool, right?

The current ninth series was built around abstract concepts: time, light, and communication.

The upcoming tenth series drops any abstraction and goes straight to the physical landscape. In my opinion, it's a shift in how Switzerland wants to present itself on its own money.

What the New Swiss Banknotes Will Look Like

Drumrolls, please... Each new banknote in Concept J has two distinct sides, and here is what they will feature:

Front: Native Swiss Plants and Nature by Altitude

One face of every note shows native plants, flowers, and small creatures. Think insects, pollinators, and species that live at that specific altitude.

The illustrations are detailed and fine-lined, designed to work together with microtext and security features layered underneath.

This turns each note into a small field guide. Meadow plants on the lower denominations, alpine flora on the higher ones. For a country where nature is central to both daily life and tourism, this feels like a "natural fit" - no pun intended.

Back: Landscapes, Buildings, and Swiss Public Transport

The reverse side puts human life at that same altitude on display:

• Architecture typical to each elevation, from lowland farmhouses to alpine huts and the Jungfraujoch station.
• Cultural references connected to how people actually live and work at that altitude.
• Swiss public transport and mobility, from the Glacier Express train to cable cars, mountain roads and tunnels. They are a kind of thread connecting all the altitude zones.
• Landscapes, from river bends to hillside villages, passes, and peaks.

Studio Marcus Kraft's "Rock and landscape as currency"

Here is where the story gets really interesting. The expert jury actually ranked the concept by Zurich-based Studio Marcus Kraft first.

But when the full evaluation (including commercial and organisational criteria) was factored in, Emphase's Concept J came out ahead overall.

Both proposals were seriously good, and the final call came down to criteria that go well beyond visual design.

Marcus Kraft's concept is called "Rock and landscape as currency." The idea is clever and direct: the Swiss franc is a hard currency, internationally known for stability and reliability. Switzerland is a country literally made of rock. Put the two ideas together and you get: rocks on money.

Marcus Kraft's "Hard as a Rock" would have looked unlike any banknote series in the world. Each bill would have featured a real stone collected at a specific Swiss altitude, photographed at full original scale with high precision.

The Internet Had Its Own Ideas for New Swiss Banknotes

The SNB announcement sparked a wave of unofficial, tongue-in-cheek proposals on social media. And I have to say, some of them are genuinely fun. Or intricate, like the oneby Rigi Railways.

One that I particularly liked is from the city of Winterthur. A local account imagined what the new bills would look like if they were dedicated entirely to Winti landmarks: the Bruderhaus, the Roter Turm, the Bäumli, and the Affenschlucht all made appearances on mock-up notes in the familiar Swiss franc format.

Colors, Denominations, and What Stays the Same

One of the most practical decisions in the new series: the familiar stuff does not change.

The SNB has confirmed:

• Denominations stay at 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 1000 francs
• The color scheme stays broadly consistent with the current ninth series

The yellow 10-franc note stays yellow. The red 20-franc note stays red. You will not need to relearn your money.

For residents, tourists, elderly people, and anyone who identifies notes by color at the checkout, this matters a lot. (Me!) The new design changes the visual story on each bill., but the main characteristics will stay the same.

When Will the New Swiss Franc Banknotes Actually Arrive?

Short answer: not before the early 2030s, likely in 2031. Here's why it takes that long:

Expected Security Features on the New Swiss Banknotes

The SNB has not yet published the security spec for the tenth series. I think this is for the obvious reason that they don't want to give a head-start to forgers.

But looking at the current and past series of bills, Switzerland's track record speaks for itself. Swiss banknotes actually have one of the lowest counterfeiting rates in the world, at roughly 1 in 100,000 notes in circulation.

At the bare minimum, expect these security features on the tenth series:

• Watermarks and microprinting embedded in the fine botanical illustration work
• Tactile raised printing so denomination values can be felt by touch
• Holographic foils or transparent windows, a modern standard on high-security notes
• UV-reactive inks revealing hidden patterns under ultraviolet light
• Color-shifting elements that change at different viewing angles
• Machine-readable serial numbers for ATM and cash-machine compatibility

The dense botanical illustration style of Concept J is probaby way more than just a design choice. By overlapping lines and using incredibly small typography, these bills will be genuinely hard to scan and reproduce. Right there is another ingenious, built-in security layer, let alone all the dedicated anti-counterfeit features.

A Brief History of Swiss Banknote Series

Switzerland has issued nine complete banknote series since 1907. Each one is a snapshot of Swiss design thinking and security technology at that moment in time.

The eighth series was taken out of circulation in 2021 and is no longer exchangeable at the SNB. That's a useful reminder: old Swiss banknotes do eventually reach a hard deadline.

The ninth series introduced a new visual language built around abstract concepts, such as time, light, and communication. It also had some major security upgrades, including the tactile grey relief motif on every note. (Have you noticed it?)

When Two Countries Share Your Marriage

Being married across borders brings perspective and opportunity. It also means that two legal systems can quietly overlap in the background. Joint savings, pensions, investments, and home ownership may trigger different reporting rules under U.S. law.

None of this means you have done anything wrong. It simply means the rules were not written with international couples in mind. The key is understanding where exposure exists and planning before paperwork is signed.

Joint Accounts

In Switzerland, joint accounts are normal. For U.S. tax purposes, they are treated differently.

If an American spouse has access to a Swiss account even if the Swiss spouse earned all the money, the American spouse must report the entire balance on the FBAR and possibly FATCA on Form 8938.

Swiss Investment Accounts and PFICs

Most Swiss mutual funds are classified by the IRS as Passive Foreign Investment Companies, known as PFICs. These require Form 8621 reporting and can result in unfavorable tax treatment.

For mixed couples, this raises a strategic decision:

• If you expect to remain in Switzerland long term, holding Swiss investments solely in the non-U.S. spouse’s name may reduce complexity.
• If you anticipate returning to the United States, maintaining U.S.-compliant investments such as U.S. ETFs may offer greater flexibility, even if Swiss taxation is less favorable.

There is no universal structure that fits every family. Time horizon and residency plans matter.

Estate Planning: A Rule Many Couples Miss

When both spouses are U.S. citizens, assets transferred at death typically qualify for the unlimited marital deduction.

This changes when the surviving spouse is not a U.S. citizen.

If a U.S. citizen leaves assets to a non-U.S. spouse:

• The unlimited marital deduction does not automatically apply
• The lifetime estate and gift exemption is used first
• Federal estate tax may apply if the estate exceeds the available exemption

To preserve deferral of estate tax beyond the exemption amount, the estate may establish a Qualified Domestic Trust (QDOT).

A QDOT allows assets to pass to a non‑citizen spouse while deferring estate tax until principal is distributed or the surviving spouse dies.

For mixed couples, the key question is which portion belongs to the U.S. spouse and what must be reported annually.

Mixed-nationality couples generally have three filing options:

1. Married Filing Separately – The default and most common option. It keeps the non-U.S. spouse outside the U.S. tax system.
2. Electing to File Jointly under 6013(g) – The non-U.S. spouse is treated as a U.S. taxpayer. This can increase deductions but requires full worldwide income disclosure.
3. Head of Household – This is rare and only possible with a qualifying child and certain residency situations.

The correct choice depends on income levels, residency, and long-term intentions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Assuming joint means equal for tax purposes
Swiss ownership percentages do not automatically control U.S. reporting obligations.

• Revisit U.S. filing elections yearly, what worked last year may not work now
• Get tax advice before buying property together, not after
• Consider a postnuptial agreement clarifying asset ownership for tax purposes
• Set calendar reminders for FBAR (April 15) and Form 8938 (tax return deadline)

For one, it's that unique cable car. I've ridden dozens of cable cars in Switzerland, but the Stanserhorn CabriO remains the one I tell friends about first.

Launched in 2012, the CabriO is a double-decker aerial cable car. The lower deck is enclosed like any normal cabin, but the upper deck is completely open to the elements.

On the upper deck, which is reachable by a flight of stairs, there is literally no roof and no windows, just a railing that protects you from tumbling off. Up to 60 passengers can stand on top, but I've never seen more than two dozen. The ride from the middle station at Kälti (1,220 m) to the summit takes about six minutes.

What makes it so special is that rush you get from being out in the open air. You glide just above a meadow for the first stretch, and then the ground suddenly drops away and you're hanging high above the valley floor...

The wind picks up, the views explode in every direction, and you pass between the massive support masts close enough to feel the scale of the engineering. There are no cables overhead blocking your view, just open sky!

The first time I rode the upper deck, I made the mistake of wearing a baseball cap. It nearly flew off somewhere over Nidwalden! Lesson learned... But I also couldn't stop grinning the entire way up!

Let's start with the obvious: the views are staggering. From the summit terrace you can see Lake Lucerne, the Bernese Alps (including the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau), and no less than 10 Swiss lakes.

On exceptionally clear days, you can even see as far as the Black Forest in Germany and the Vosges in France. Including Switzerland, that's three countries from one terrace!

I've stood up there on a cloudless October morning and counted mountain peaks until I lost track. The 100-kilometer alpine chain stretching across the horizon never gets old.

And here's a tip I picked up from a local: don't skip a cloudy day too quickly.

The Marmot Colony

One of the funnest surprises on the Stanserhorn is the colony of Alpine marmots living near the summit. Yes, there are live, chubby, curious yet semi-wild marmots all over the summit.

You can often spot them sunbathing on rocks, or hear their distinctive warning whistles echoing across the meadow.

Mamiko and I once spent nearly an hour just sitting quietly near the marmot area, watching them pop in and out of their burrows. (It was oddly meditative.)

The best time to see marmots? Morning and late afternoon, especially on warm sunny days. They hibernate from October to April, so visit in summer for the best chances.

Talk to the Stanserhorn Rangers

Something most visitors walk right past: the Stanserhorn rangers who are often stationed near the summit and are happy to chat. (In English, too!)

• Early morning (first cable car up) gives you the clearest views. Clouds and haze tend to build in the afternoon.

My honest take: If you only have time for one mountain near Lucerne, the Stanserhorn gives you the most unique experience. The CabriO exists nowhere else in the world, the crowds are a fraction of what you'll find on Pilatus, and the combination of the vintage funicular and the open-air cable car is something you simply can't replicate elsewhere.

Pilatus has more dramatic terrain, and Rigi is better for sunrise stays. But for a day trip that feels genuinely special, the Stanserhorn wins IMO.

You be the judge, but I'll say "absolutely!" If this blog post has not convinced you enough, let me tell you that whenever I bring visiting friends and family here, every single person has called it a highlight of their Switzerland trip.

The CabriO is a one-of-a-kind experience. And combined with the historic funicular, the marmots, the revolving restaurant, and the panoramic views of 10 Swiss lakes, it's one of Central Switzerland's best day trips.

As you can tell, the Stanserhorn holds a special place in my personal list of Swiss mountain experiences. It doesn't have the fame of the Jungfraujoch or the Instagram presence of the Matterhorn, and honestly, that's part of what I love about it.

The cable car only operates from April to November, so don't wait too long to plan your visit...

Trust me when I say that Switzerland has some of the cleanest public toilets in the world. But clean comes with a cost, and access often comes with a four-digit code, a CHF 1.50 coin, or knowing exactly which door to push.

My ultimate guide tells it all: City-by-city breakdowns, insider tips like cemeteries, toilet codes, train toilets, and hidden gems. It's the kind of insider knowledge you will want to bookmark for your next trip to Switzerland.

About Public Toilets in Switzerland

Switzerland does not have one single toilet system. Essentially, there are three types of toilets available in this small country - not counting Mother Nature. Understanding which system you are dealing with saves time and stress.

Paid Train Station Toilets in Switzerland

"Why is there a fee to use toilets in train stations?" This is a question I hear often. Well, Swiss station toilets charge fees because they are genuinely staffed and maintained to a high standard.

You'll notice that attendants clean these facilities constantly, wiping down surfaces after every use. Some locations offer showers, baby-changing rooms, and accessible facilities.

The fee is typically CHF 1 to CHF 1.50, so I think it's a legitimate fee for what you're getting. At Zurich HB, the McClean facilities on the in-between level by the lockers also offers showers for CHF 12 and family changing rooms. They are run by Vebego AG.

Accessible toilets with are free of charge for those with a Eurokey.

The Eurokey Offers Free Access for People with Disabilities

Speaking of which: The Eurokey is a universal key used across Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and several other European countries. It opens:

• Dedicated accessible toilet cubicles at public facilities and train stations
• Accessible lifts in public buildings
• Accessible parking barriers
• Some changing rooms and rest areas

The key fits around 12'000 locks across Europe. In Switzerland, you can order one through Pro Infirmis (+41 58 775 31 08) or via the official Eurokey website. The cost is approximately CHF 25 to CHF 30.

Pre-Loaded Toilet Entry Card

For those of you who don't carry cash, I can highly recommend buying a toilet entry card. These are available in Selecta vending machines near any major station toilet.

The card comes preloaded with CHF 1, CHF 1.50 or CHF 15 of credit. Swipe its magnetic strip at the reader and the door opens. The card is valid for five years and works across all SBB-managed station toilets in Switzerland. It costs the same as paying directly. I carry this card in my wallet because I don't usually have change when I need it...

Free Station Toilets with the Swiss Travel Pass

Here's a very cool, and likely most underused tip for accessing public toilets in Switzerland.

If you hold a valid Swiss Travel Pass or a valid SBB train ticket, you can scan it at the entry gate of most major station toilets for free access.

The pass also gets you free entry into museums - and museum lobbies almost always have clean, accessible toilets. The Bern History Museum, the Museum of Art and History in Geneva, and the Swiss National Museum in Zurich are just a few museums you could enter for free to use the toilet facilities.

Paying for Toilets in Geneva

Geneva's train station at Cornavin has paid toilet facilities managed by McClean. Entry costs CHF 1.50 and can be paid by card. Holders of a valid SBB train ticket or Swiss Travel Pass can scan their pass at the entry gate for free access.

If you prefer cashless, purchase a toilet entry card from a Selecta machine near the restrooms. The card is preloaded with credit and valid for five years.

These toilets are part of the ZüriWC network, managed by the City of Zurich. Bellevue, Bürkliplatz, and Paradeplatz are attended WCs with a CHF 1 fee. The rest are free and unattended.

Bern is Switzerland's federal capital and one of Europe's most walkable UNESCO-listed city centers. Six kilometers of covered arcades, a lazy loop of the Aare, and more fountains than you can count. Which means plenty of walking, plenty of café stops, and at some point, a real need for a toilet.

Trust me, Swiss locals will quite literally strategize over bathroom breaks when they visit a city such as Bern. A sip from one of the legendary drinking fountains? Only if there's a WC nearby...

That's why I wrote this guide. It has the current fast food codes, every free public WC in Bern's city center and nearby neighborhoods, accessibility info, and baby changing locations. Updated February 2026.

The "Friendly Toilet" Network in Bern

The Nette Toilette ("Friendly Toilet") program in Bern is a legitimate city-sponsored program. A dozen participating businesses are displaying a sticker, allowing anybody to use their in-house toilet free of charge. There are no strings attached - I've tested this myself.

Look for the "Look for the "Nette Toilette - Eine Aktion der Stadt Bern" sticker at the entrance.
