With the onset of autumn, farmers across Switzerland return their herds of cows, sheep, and goats from the high-altitude pastures. It is the season of alpine cow parades, cattle shows, and cheese markets.

The age-old tradition of alpine cow parades marks a milestone in a farmer’s year. And this homecoming of farm animals is a spectacle for onlookers, too. Depending on the region, the tradition is known as désalpe (French), Alpabfahrt, or Alpabzug (German). To celebrate a successful summer, the farmers would decorate their farm animals with flowers, twigs, and beautiful bells.

The artisanal farmers' market will be in full swing. As the decorated cattle make their way into the village, you'll be able to soak up the festive yet down-to-earth atmosphere. Local Beizli food stands will keep you well-fed.

On the first Thursday of September, Guggisberg has hosted Switzerland's largest sheep descent and autumn market. (We're talking 350 years of tradition!) Early-morning return of the flocks, artisan wool booths, and local food all day.

If you're staying anywhere near, the Alpine Festival Gstaad is a must-visit highlight in the Bernese Oberland. It is known locally as the Züglete, which means as much as moving, as or moving house.

From 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, groups of cows make their way through Gstaad's charming main street approximately every 30 minutes. Grab a spot along main street early to witness multiple processions throughout the day, rather than one single parade.

This event in Valais is smaller scale but beautiful. Experience how the cows return from the Hoferälpji to the town of Saas-Balen. The bovines will depart the alpine pastures at 10 AM, which puts them in the village around noon. A cheese market where the summer's dairy products are hawked follows the parade. Music and entertainment continue until 6 PM.

Around 500 cows descend from the high Engstligenalp plateau along steep mountain paths into the village. Get a spot by 9 AM if you want a good photo line.

Brigels is such a lovely little town and a perfect base for hiking - and even golfing. On September 12, about 600 festively adorned cows and animals will descend from the surrounding alpine meadows to the village's Plaun Rueun. The locals call this tradition of cow parades Scargada, which is Rumansh.

Each group of livestock will arrive with herders and alpine staff, bringing a burst of color and bell sounds into the heart of the village. From 10:30 AM, enjoy a lively festival with barbecue, food stalls, music, dancing, a bar, and a giant straw castle for kids.

Here's a cow parade and village celebration all in one! Innertkirchen in the Bernese Alps enjoys two homecomings every year, each from a different alpine meadow. Around noon, the first batch of beautifully adorned cows will return from Alp Gental. At 1 PM, the next parade from Alp Engstlen will arrive.

Each arrival is concluded with a parade in Innertkirchen, so you could hang out there to watch it all. However, those who want to capture beautiful photographs might want to hike toward the alps ahead of the arrivals to catch the cows in a natural setting.

The festivities begin as early as 9:00 AM with a regional market, Festwirtschaft food and beverage stands, and live music. And there's a dedicated Alpabzug experience just for kids! You may drop the little ones at the church at 11:45 AM by the church for a return walk from Urbachltal, complete with traditional dress, a small cow herd, and tractor rides. With its tall waterfall, the idyllic Suldtal above Spiez makes for a unique setting. Around noon, the parade will pass by the restaurant. Traditionally, participating children wear folk costumes while the well-fed cows are decorated with bells and flower bouquets. The herdsmen, meanwhile, are busy keeping all the goats and bovines in line...

The historic village of Müstair welcomes the return of alpine herds in the traditional S-chargiada d'Alp. Roughly between 12:30 and 1:30 PM, festively decorated cows and herders make their way to the Klosterwiese, just in front of the UNESCO-listed St. John Monastery.

Also, starting from 10:30 AM, there will be a market with regional delicacies, live music and folklore. Although a bit off-the-beaten path, this event in Val Müstair is the highlight of the Val Müstair's rural calendar and offers the perfect occasion to experience authentic alpine heritage.

The famous historic cheese-sharing ceremony combined with the alp descent. Cows arrive first, then a wheel of Justistal cheese is split among the villagers who own the alpine.

In prior years, the herdsmen would depart from their alps towards the valley as early as 7:30 AM. Between 8:30 AM and 1 PM, various groups will pass through the town of Wasen im Emmental. Between 9 AM and 1 PM, groups are expected to arrive in Summiswald.

Since there are usually many different farmers at this event, you can expect just as many farm animals in the parades: oxen, dairy cows, cattle, and goats. And while you enjoy all the festivities of the Emmentaler Alpabfahrt, indulge in local food from the various clubs.

Update: The 2026 edition of the Emmentaler Alpabfahrt has been cancelled due to the summer's drought. Do not plan a visit this year.

Anzère above Sion welcomes the cows of Alp Serin home at 11 AM. The best place to enjoy the procession will be at the cable car or Restaurant de la Poste where the cows arrive. As summer draws to a close, the farmers of Blatten-Belalp traditionally drive their cows back to the valley. To celebrate this occasion, the farmers will decorate their cows for the long journey to Blatten.

The cows will embark on their journey starting at 7 AM. They are expected to arrive in Blatten near Naters at 11 AM. You might want to arrive a bit earlier, however, as the festivities at the valley station of Blatten are set to begin at 9 AM.

The program includes flag-wavers, yodeling, and the traditional crowning of the "Belalp Alpine Queen" at 3 PM. The best way to reach Blatten-Belalp is from Brig or Naters. The final stretch to Belalp is by gondola or cable car. Find the program on Belalp's official event page.

From 10 AM through 5 PM, the town of Emmetten welcomes farmers and their livestock. There will also be an alpine market in this beautiful setting on the southern shores of Lake Lucerne. Expect a selection of the summer's best cheese, meats, and honey, among other things. The children will surely enjoy the petting zoo. And who knows, you might try your luck in the milking competition.

The La Fouly désalpes takes place in the French-speaking part of Valais. The village is quite a ways from even Martigny, a 35-minute drive or 52-minute ride on public transport. Nonetheless, this will be a scenic désalpes involving four mountain pastures: Mont-Percé, Ars, Peule, and Léchère/Plan de la Chaux.

A 10 AM parade precedes the arrival of the animals. The food stalls with everything from raclette to BBQ will open before noon. A definite highlight will be the cow fights at 2:30 PM. The winning cow will disappear as the official "Queen of Désalpe"... The full program is published on the La Désalpe de La Fouly website.

The Appenzell region offers a perfect setting for cows' homecoming. Throughout the morning, different farmers arrive in the town of Urnäsch. But the best time to enjoy this tradition is between 10 AM and 1 PM, although the herds arrive as early at 9 AM.

On the same day, there will be a farmer's market on Kronenplatz with dozens of stalls. Don't miss the live folk music from the Buebechörli. And have we mentioned the pig races at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM?

Due to a partial road closure of the Schwägalp to Urnäsch route from 9 AM to 1 PM, plan on parking at Appenzellerstrasse or at Werkhof Furt. From there, hop on a shuttle bus to Urnäsch. Or better yet, arrive by public transport. More details are on MySwitzerland's Urnäsch page.

9 AM to 2 PM descent from the Flimserstein plateau with a farmers' food corner serving alp cheese and salsiz. Catch the cable car up if you'd rather skip the hike.

The alpine descents of Mels are among the most popular events in this region. A fourth Saturday descent is possible but not yet confirmed; always reconfirm online.

The cows, adorned in vibrant floral headdresses and gleaming bells, return to Wasserauen from their summer pastures on the Ebenalp at 2 PM. We love this particular cow parade because of the iconic herdsmen in their traditional Appenzell dresses and live folk music.

As every year, farmers will bring back their livestock from Wengernalp. The best time to witness this annual Swiss tradition is late morning.

The cows will depart from Wengernalp at 9:30 AM and make their way into Wengen at 10:30 AM. You will have the best vantage points along Dorfstrasse. By 11:15 AM, the cows will arrive in Lauterbrunnen, trotting into town from the parking lot at the Lauterbrunnen church.

After four months of grazing in the mountains, the herds will mark the end of summer with their grand return to the valley. The cow parade in Kerns is a piece of living tradition and authentic alpine culture. Due to this summer's drought and lack of feed, the cow parade has been cancelled in 2026.

Starting at 9:30 AM, the market stalls would open for leisurely browsing while eateries invite you to linger and savor the atmosphere. At 11 AM, the alpine herders and their beautifully adorned animals would make a grand procession through the village of Kerns. Following the parade, the village's weather prognosticator, Martin Holdener, known as "Muser," will provide a delightful summer review.

The Viehschau Engelberg and Grafenort is an essential event for this alpine community. The festivities kick off at 9 AM with open catering. At 10 AM, witness an animal exhibition featuring around 200 well-bred livestock in the running to be nominated a winner.

By noon, relish lunch, including beef pepper, alongside musical entertainment. At 1:15 PM, special competitions crown the cattle champion and the day's winner. The breeders' evening begins at 8 PM with free admission, featuring musical entertainment by Schimbrig Power and a DJ-run bar. Free parking is available at the Brunni cable car.

Every last Saturday of September, the désalpes in Charmey celebrate the cattle's return to the lower pastures. The rindyà (dialect for "alpine departure") is touted among traditionalists as one of the most authentic events.

This désalpes also has a "Goût & Terroir" market, cheese zone, artisan stalls, farm machine exhibition, and folk group performances.

The 20th anniversary of the Entlebucher Alpabfahrt will be a spectacle in its own right. More than 300 animals from seven farmer families are expected to walk into Schüpfheim around 11:30 AM.

Their bells can be heard from far away, but the ornate decorations can only be seen once the bovines enter the town. Pay special attention to the humans with their local folk dresses, too.

When hundreds of cows and other farm animals trot through the village of St. Cergue, it must be the annual désalpe. For this special event, the farmers and shepherds wear their traditional attire. You can spot them cracking their whips and waving their flags as they parade through the village. Meanwhile, their prized possessions are adorned with floral decorations and large bells.

The events in St. Cergue begin at 8:45 AM with the first processions. From 11 AM, booths will sell artisanal foods and handicrafts, alphorn concerts, and more.

The cattle drives in the Val d'Anniviers are unique in Switzerland: this region in Valais is known for the black Herens breed. From 11:00 AM onwards, the beautifully decorated "queens" and their herds will arrive from the Alpage de Moiry in the historic old town of Grimentz. A farmers market with local cheese varieties, live music, and other entertainment round off the program.

The town of Blonay, near Vevey, is very easy to access by car or by GoldenPass train. Around noon, the herd departs from the Guedères alpine pasture. Until arriving at the castle of Blonay around 1 to 2 PM, the bovines and herdsmen will have walked for a dozen kilometers.

Starting at 11 AM, those awaiting the cows' arrival will indulge in local food, alphorn concerts, flag-throwing performances, and more.

After spending four months on alpine pastures, the cattle return to the town center of Plaffeien. Starting at 10 AM and throughout the day, more than 1000 animals are expected to arrive home. The official program is published on the Gantrisch event calendar.

The Vacherin Mont-d'Or AOP festival combined with the désalpe. Buy cheese straight from the alpine cellar in the morning, watch the parade in the afternoon.

Witness the return of alpine herds from Obersee, Schwändital, and Klöntal to Näfels' village square. Adorned and accompanied by shepherds, the cows are celebrated for their hard work, including maintaining meadows and producing milk for delicious Glarner alpine cheese.

Across the valley in Schwanden, the first big cattle drive arrives on Hauptstrasse at 7:30 AM. Enjoy an alpine breakfast, market stalls, and crafts until two more cattle drives reach the festival grounds. It's a fantastic alpine day with impressive cattle and the official mascot Zibu, who will also be walking back home this year.

The famous Savognin Sheep Sheering event and farmer's market are back! As in previous years, the market, starting at 10:30 AM, features various wool products and handicrafts. Kids can enjoy a fairy tale hour, and you can purchase exquisite alpine cheeses at the stalls.

Up to 300 sheep arrive at the Plazza Grava schoolhouse square around 11 AM. In the past, the sheep had a long trek from faraway Alp Flix. But in recent years, they have come from much closer alpine pastures near Savognin.

Don't miss the captivating herding dog show at 11:30 AM, 2 PM, and 3 PM.

The Prättigauer Alp Spektakel is a single happening to experience it all. This vibrant festival brings together the best of alpine tradition in one place: a colorful descent of cows, sheep, and goats into the village of Seewis, along with a marketplace filled with handmade products from over 100 regional producers. One of the highlights is the legendary alpine beard contest, where the most impressive whiskers of the Prättigau are proudly judged.

The best way to reach the festival is by public transport. Get off at Grüsch train station or park your car at the Grüsch-Danusa valley station. From there, a shuttle bus runs every 20 minutes up to Seewis, the scenic village where the festival takes place. Expect music, food stands, a children's area, and plenty of local charm. It's one of the most authentic alpine festivals in Graubünden, wrapped into a single unforgettable weekend.

Elm's picturesque town hosts a large market every first Sunday of October. Starting at 8 AM, the Glarner Alpchäs- und Schabziger-Märt features booths selling the cheese produced during the summer. Each cheese variety has a flavor profile, so we recommend you sample them all!

One of the attractions of this annual alpine festival is the arrival of the "Trychler" farmers, who carry heavy bells. The homecoming of livestock follows their parade.

The cantonal Viehschau takes place every first Tuesday of October on the Brauereiplatz in Appenzell. Individual farmers parade into town sennisch - that is, with everything that belongs to a proper alpine procession - much to the delight of the crowds lining the streets.

Cows and bulls are washed and brushed until their coats shine. The herdsmen wear their Sunday-best Festtagstracht. Singing, Zauren, and the sound of large bells, they come from every direction in the morning and pass under the triumphal arch decorated with fir branches and flowers on their way to the Brauereiplatz. Once a year, on that first Tuesday in October, the canton showcases the success of its breeding program.

There's actually only one cattle drive in the entire canton of Jura. Around 2:30 PM, a dozen farmer families and their cattle will return from the Jura hills to Boéchet. In the morning, there will be music, a parade, and an artisanal market.

Moving to Switzerland might feel like escaping the IRS’s reach, but Uncle Sam has a long memory.

Whether you are in Zürich sipping espresso or heading to Verbier for the weekend, U.S. tax rules still apply. If you are an American living in Switzerland, these are the 10 essentials to know to stay compliant and avoid expensive surprises.

1. Yes, you still have to file a U.S. tax return, even from Switzerland

The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income, no matter where they live. So if you are a U.S. citizen earning income in Switzerland, you will generally still need to file a U.S. Form 1040.

That catches many Americans off guard. You move abroad, pay taxes locally, and assume that is the end of the story. It is not. The filing requirement usually follows you overseas.

2. Filing does not always mean paying U.S. tax

Here is the good news: filing a U.S. return does not automatically mean you will owe money to the IRS.

Many Americans in Switzerland can reduce or eliminate double taxation by using the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion, known as FEIE, and the Foreign Tax Credit, or FTC. Depending on your income, tax situation, and filing strategy, these tools can go a long way toward preventing the same income from being taxed twice.

3. You usually get more time to file, but do not ignore the April deadline

Americans abroad typically receive an automatic two-month extension to file, which usually moves the filing deadline to June 15. If needed, many expats also request an additional extension to October 15.

But there is a catch. Even when you get extra time to file, interest can still accrue on unpaid tax from the regular April due date. In plain English: the paperwork can wait a bit, but the money side may not.

4. The IRS wants to know about your Swiss bank accounts

If the combined value of your foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the year, you will generally need to file the FBAR, formally known as FinCEN Form 114.

You may also need to report certain foreign assets under FATCA through Form 8938, depending on your filing status and asset thresholds. These are separate reporting rules, and people often confuse them. The IRS does not.

5. Swiss banks report under FATCA

Those old ideas about Swiss banking secrecy belong more to postcards than modern tax reality.

Swiss financial institutions participate in FATCA reporting, which means U.S. account holders are very much on the radar. If you have reportable accounts, it is far better to disclose them properly than to hope they stay invisible.

6. Swiss pensions can get complicated fast

Switzerland’s pension system, including Pillar 2 and Pillar 3, does not fit neatly into U.S. tax categories.

These accounts may trigger reporting under U.S. tax rules, and their treatment depends on how contributions, earnings, and distributions are structured. A quick comparison to a 401(k) may sound comforting, but it usually leaves out the messy part.

7. You may need to file in Switzerland, too

U.S. filing obligations do not replace Swiss ones.

Depending on your permit type, income, and canton, you may be taxed at source through withholding tax, known as Quellensteuer, or you may need to file an annual Swiss tax return. In Switzerland, these rules are not one-size-fits-all. Coordinating both systems early can save you from a nasty surprise later.

8. Do not ignore IRS letters just because you moved

The IRS is not known for its romantic side. “I did not get the mail” will not win much sympathy.

If you move to Switzerland, make sure your address is updated. Better yet, work with a trusted U.S. expat tax advisor who can help manage notices and correspondence before a small issue turns into a bigger one.

9. The Streamlined Filing Program may help if you fell behind

If you are behind on your U.S. tax filings, the Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures, often called SFOP, may help you catch up with reduced or even no penalties, provided your non-compliance was non-willful.

Think of it as the IRS’s version of, “Let’s fix this before it gets uglier.” It is not a free pass, but for many Americans abroad, it is an important path back into compliance.

10. Work with a tax professional who actually understands U.S. expat taxes

Not every tax preparer understands cross-border compliance. And this is not the moment for guesswork.

If you are an American in Switzerland, look for a professional who regularly works with expats and understands forms such as 2555, 1116, 8938, 3520, 3520-A, and the reporting issues that can come with foreign pensions and financial accounts.

Bottom line

Living in Switzerland is sweet. U.S. tax compliance, less so.

Still, staying informed and proactive can save you a lot of stress, lower the risk of penalties, and leave you with more time to enjoy the good parts of Swiss life, ideally with fondue and not with forms spread across the kitchen table.

That kind of contrast is hard to find in most European cities. It's a small world you can only discover on foot. From a tram seat or a café window, you'd miss it entirely.

What I love about this route is how much changes in a short distance. You start in the middle of the urban buzz and within 20 minutes you're somewhere quieter and more human-scaled.

The East-West Shoreline Trail

Best for: Post-work walks, clear heads, and views worth slowing down for.

Ask a Zürcher where they go when they need to breathe. Most will say the lake.

Start at Rote Fabrik or Bellevue and head south along the General-Guisan-Quai. As you pass the lawns of Zürichhorn park, the city noise drops away. What replaces it: the sound of the water and, if the weather cooperates, the Glarus Alps sitting quietly on the horizon.

This is the route I default to after a long day. There's something about the rhythm of running alongside water that resets everything. The path is well-maintained, almost entirely flat, and never feels crowded the way tourist zones do.

The Uetliberg Ridge Trail

Best for: Trail runners, endurance lovers, and anyone who wants a mountain without the three-hour train ride.

You don't need to go to Graubünden for proper trail running. Zürich has its own mountain, and it's closer than most visitors realize.

Switzerland is getting new banknotes. And honestly, they sound like something worth getting excited about.

The Swiss National Bank has picked a winner for the next generation of Swiss francs. The new notes will look different, tell a new story, and come packed with even more security features. The catch? You will not be holding them until the early 2030s.

Here is everything you need to know.

No midlife crisis for the current Swiss franc notes

The current ninth series launched between 2016 and 2019. The average lifespan of a Swiss banknote series is around 15 to 20 years. So, today's notes are actually still in perfectly good shape.

SNB president Martin Schlegel put it best back in October 2025: "I can assure you that the current notes are not having a midlife crisis."

That said, the development of a new series takes several years. While your 20-franc note is not going anywhere soon, the SNB is already deep into building its replacement. On March 4, 2026, SNB representatives Sébastien Kraenzlin and Antoine Martin announced the winner at the SNB's Zurich headquarters.

Six finalists were still in the running. The winners: Fabienne Kilchör and Sébastien Fasel from the Lausanne design studio Emphase Sàrl.

Why Switzerland Is Redesigning Its Banknotes

Switzerland takes its cash seriously. Dare I say more? Cash payments have declined from 70 percent in 2017 to 30 percent. Yet, most Swiss people want to keep cash around. I always carry cash in my wallet, although I am guilty of using credit cards or Twint most of the time...

The SNB has a clear job: make sure banknotes stay secure, practical, and one step ahead of anyone trying to fake them. That means regularly updating the series with better technology, better security features, and a fresh design.

The current ninth series, designed by Zurich graphic artist Manuela Pfrunder, launched between 2016 and 2019. It was a big deal at the time, and it still holds up.

But then again, technology moves fast. You can read about what made the ninth series so impressive in our post on the security features of Swiss banknotes. The tenth series now has to raise that bar.

There is also a political backdrop. On March 8, 2026, Switzerland voted on a "cash initiative" that wanted to write coins and banknotes into the federal constitution. The Federal Council said no to the initiative but offered a counter-proposal to protect the SNB's duty to supply cash.

The SNB announced its winning banknote design just days before the vote. Now, whether or not this was coincidence or simply timing, it sent a clear message: the Swiss franc in physical form is not going away. And personally, I'm glad, because I have so many memories of Swiss coins and bills going all the way back to my childhood...

Emphase Wins the Swiss Banknote Design Competition

The new series will be designed by Emphase Sàrl, a studio from Lausanne run by Fabienne Kilchör and Sébastien Fasel. Their concept, called Concept J, came out on top after a serious competition.

Here is how it worked:

• More than 300 designers applied
• 12 studios were invited to submit full concepts
• A six-member expert jury evaluated all 12 proposals
• Over 100,000 people voted in a public survey
• Concept J landed in the top three in both the jury and public rankings
• When commercial and organisational criteria were added, Concept J had the best overall result

The jury included specialists from the University of St. Gallen, the Federal Office of Culture, and Swiss design and printing organisations. This was not just a vote on what looks nice. It was a serious assessment covering design quality, technical feasibility, and real-world production.

Emphase now has a formal mandate to develop the entire tenth series along with the SNB's internal specialists.

"Switzerland and Its Altitudes"
(What the Theme Actually Means)

Every studio in the competition worked with the same brief from the SNB: "Switzerland and Its Altitudes." (German: Die Schweiz und ihre Höhenlagen)

The idea is to take Switzerland's most defining physical feature (around 70 percent of the country is mountains) and turn it into a visual system across all six denominations. From the flattest lowlands to the highest peaks, each note belongs to a different altitude zone.

Here's a breakdown of what this means:

• Smaller denominations (CHF 10, CHF 20) connect to low-altitude environments: the Mittelland, rivers, the Jura
• Mid-range values (CHF 50, CHF 100) cover pre-alpine areas, lakes, and hillside towns
• Higher values (CHF 200, CHF 1000) go all the way up into the Alps: glaciers, rock faces, high passes

Pick up a 10-franc note and you are at the river. Pull out a 1000-franc note and you are at the summit. Kinda cool, right?

The current ninth series was built around abstract concepts: time, light, and communication.

The upcoming tenth series drops any abstraction and goes straight to the physical landscape. In my opinion, it's a shift in how Switzerland wants to present itself on its own money.

What the New Swiss Banknotes Will Look Like

Drumrolls, please... Each new banknote in Concept J has two distinct sides, and here is what they will feature:

Front: Native Swiss Plants and Nature by Altitude

One face of every note shows native plants, flowers, and small creatures. Think insects, pollinators, and species that live at that specific altitude.

The illustrations are detailed and fine-lined, designed to work together with microtext and security features layered underneath.

This turns each note into a small field guide. Meadow plants on the lower denominations, alpine flora on the higher ones. For a country where nature is central to both daily life and tourism, this feels like a "natural fit" - no pun intended.

Back: Landscapes, Buildings, and Swiss Public Transport

The reverse side puts human life at that same altitude on display:

• Architecture typical to each elevation, from lowland farmhouses to alpine huts and the Jungfraujoch station.
• Cultural references connected to how people actually live and work at that altitude.
• Swiss public transport and mobility, from the Glacier Express train to cable cars, mountain roads and tunnels. They are a kind of thread connecting all the altitude zones.
• Landscapes, from river bends to hillside villages, passes, and peaks.

For anyone who has explored Switzerland by train, post bus, or cable car, this will feel familiar. The new Swiss banknotes basically double as a love letter to Swiss mobility.

Studio Marcus Kraft's "Rock and landscape as currency"

Here is where the story gets really interesting. The expert jury actually ranked the concept by Zurich-based Studio Marcus Kraft first.

But when the full evaluation (including commercial and organisational criteria) was factored in, Emphase's Concept J came out ahead overall.

Both proposals were seriously good, and the final call came down to criteria that go well beyond visual design.

Marcus Kraft's concept is called "Rock and landscape as currency." The idea is clever and direct: the Swiss franc is a hard currency, internationally known for stability and reliability. Switzerland is a country literally made of rock. Put the two ideas together and you get: rocks on money.

Marcus Kraft's "Hard as a Rock" would have looked unlike any banknote series in the world. Each bill would have featured a real stone collected at a specific Swiss altitude, photographed at full original scale with high precision.

The Internet Had Its Own Ideas for New Swiss Banknotes

The SNB announcement sparked a wave of unofficial, tongue-in-cheek proposals on social media. And I have to say, some of them are genuinely fun. Or intricate, like the oneby Rigi Railways.

One that I particularly liked is from the city of Winterthur. A local account imagined what the new bills would look like if they were dedicated entirely to Winti landmarks: the Bruderhaus, the Roter Turm, the Bäumli, and the Affenschlucht all made appearances on mock-up notes in the familiar Swiss franc format.

Colors, Denominations, and What Stays the Same

One of the most practical decisions in the new series: the familiar stuff does not change.

The SNB has confirmed:

• Denominations stay at 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 1000 francs
• The color scheme stays broadly consistent with the current ninth series

The yellow 10-franc note stays yellow. The red 20-franc note stays red. You will not need to relearn your money.

For residents, tourists, elderly people, and anyone who identifies notes by color at the checkout, this matters a lot. (Me!) The new design changes the visual story on each bill., but the main characteristics will stay the same.

When Will the New Swiss Franc Banknotes Actually Arrive?

Short answer: not before the early 2030s, likely in 2031. Here's why it takes that long:

Expected Security Features on the New Swiss Banknotes

The SNB has not yet published the security spec for the tenth series. I think this is for the obvious reason that they don't want to give a head-start to forgers.

But looking at the current and past series of bills, Switzerland's track record speaks for itself. Swiss banknotes actually have one of the lowest counterfeiting rates in the world, at roughly 1 in 100,000 notes in circulation.

At the bare minimum, expect these security features on the tenth series:

• Watermarks and microprinting embedded in the fine botanical illustration work
• Tactile raised printing so denomination values can be felt by touch
• Holographic foils or transparent windows, a modern standard on high-security notes
• UV-reactive inks revealing hidden patterns under ultraviolet light
• Color-shifting elements that change at different viewing angles
• Machine-readable serial numbers for ATM and cash-machine compatibility

The dense botanical illustration style of Concept J is probaby way more than just a design choice. By overlapping lines and using incredibly small typography, these bills will be genuinely hard to scan and reproduce. Right there is another ingenious, built-in security layer, let alone all the dedicated anti-counterfeit features.

A Brief History of Swiss Banknote Series

Switzerland has issued nine complete banknote series since 1907. Each one is a snapshot of Swiss design thinking and security technology at that moment in time.

The eighth series was taken out of circulation in 2021 and is no longer exchangeable at the SNB. That's a useful reminder: old Swiss banknotes do eventually reach a hard deadline.

The ninth series introduced a new visual language built around abstract concepts, such as time, light, and communication. It also had some major security upgrades, including the tactile grey relief motif on every note. (Have you noticed it?)

The tenth series now switches from abstract ideas to actual geography. From what Switzerland stands for to what Switzerland looks like. That shift says something about where the country is in 2026. And about how it wants to present itself to the world for the next decade and beyond.

Most couples only discover this after a bank, pension provider, or notary raises a question. Here is how to navigate them without stress.

When Two Countries Share Your Marriage

Being married across borders brings perspective and opportunity. It also means that two legal systems can quietly overlap in the background. Joint savings, pensions, investments, and home ownership may trigger different reporting rules under U.S. law.

None of this means you have done anything wrong. It simply means the rules were not written with international couples in mind. The key is understanding where exposure exists and planning before paperwork is signed.

Joint Accounts

In Switzerland, joint accounts are normal. For U.S. tax purposes, they are treated differently.

If an American spouse has access to a Swiss account even if the Swiss spouse earned all the money, the American spouse must report the entire balance on the FBAR and possibly FATCA on Form 8938.

The IRS focuses on access and ownership, not who earned the funds.

Gifts Between Spouses

This is one of the least understood areas for mixed-nationality couples.

If both spouses are U.S. citizens → unlimited tax-free gifts.

Common situations that may qualify as gifts include:

• Paying your spouse’s personal debts such as credit cards, loans, or tuition

Routine household expenses generally do not count as taxable gifts.

Case Study: The CHF 500,000 Question

Marcus, a dual U.S.-Swiss citizen working in Zürich, and his wife Elena (Swiss-only) were finalizing their dream home purchase. They planned to split the CHF 500,000 down payment equally.

But their accountant flagged an issue: under Swiss law, they would each own 50%. Under U.S. tax law, Marcus would be making a gift to Elena of CHF 250,000, well over the $185,000 annual exclusion.

The solution? They structured the purchase so Marcus would own 73%, and Elena would own 27%, matching their actual contributions after accounting for the gift exclusion. A simple title adjustment saved them from an unnecessary Form 709 filing and potential gift tax implications.

This kind of planning matters and it’s easiest to do before signing the purchase agreement.

Swiss Pensions

Swiss retirement plans do not align neatly with U.S. tax treatment.

• Pillar 2 employer pensions are tax-deferred in Switzerland but may not always receive identical treatment under U.S. rules.
• Pillar 3a contributions are deductible in Switzerland but typically not deductible on a U.S. return.

For mixed couples, the key question is which portion belongs to the U.S. spouse and what must be reported annually.

Clear documentation and organized annual statements reduce uncertainty during filing season.

Swiss Investment Accounts and PFICs

Most Swiss mutual funds are classified by the IRS as Passive Foreign Investment Companies, known as PFICs. These require Form 8621 reporting and can result in unfavorable tax treatment.

For mixed couples, this raises a strategic decision:

• If you expect to remain in Switzerland long term, holding Swiss investments solely in the non-U.S. spouse’s name may reduce complexity.
• If you anticipate returning to the United States, maintaining U.S.-compliant investments such as U.S. ETFs may offer greater flexibility, even if Swiss taxation is less favorable.

There is no universal structure that fits every family. Time horizon and residency plans matter.

Estate Planning: A Rule Many Couples Miss

When both spouses are U.S. citizens, assets transferred at death typically qualify for the unlimited marital deduction.

This changes when the surviving spouse is not a U.S. citizen.

If a U.S. citizen leaves assets to a non-U.S. spouse:

• The unlimited marital deduction does not automatically apply
• The lifetime estate and gift exemption is used first
• Federal estate tax may apply if the estate exceeds the available exemption

To preserve deferral of estate tax beyond the exemption amount, the estate may establish a Qualified Domestic Trust (QDOT).

A QDOT allows assets to pass to a non‑citizen spouse while deferring estate tax until principal is distributed or the surviving spouse dies.

For many couples this is not an immediate issue, but for families with substantial retirement assets, investments, or property holdings, it becomes an essential planning conversation.

For mixed couples, the key question is which portion belongs to the U.S. spouse and what must be reported annually.

Filing Status Options

Mixed-nationality couples generally have three filing options:

1. Married Filing Separately – The default and most common option. It keeps the non-U.S. spouse outside the U.S. tax system.
2. Electing to File Jointly under 6013(g) – The non-U.S. spouse is treated as a U.S. taxpayer. This can increase deductions but requires full worldwide income disclosure.
3. Head of Household – This is rare and only possible with a qualifying child and certain residency situations.

The correct choice depends on income levels, residency, and long-term intentions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Assuming joint means equal for tax purposes
Swiss ownership percentages do not automatically control U.S. reporting obligations.

2. Missing FBAR deadlines
FBAR is due April 15 with an automatic extension to October 15 and is filed separately from the tax return.

3. Making large transfers without documentation
Written loan agreements protect both spouses if intent is questioned later.

4. Ignoring future exit tax implications
If a non-U.S. spouse later becomes a U.S. citizen, future renunciation could trigger exit tax rules depending on net worth.

5. Not updating beneficiaries
Pension accounts, life insurance, and brokerage accounts should be reviewed after marriage and periodically thereafter.

Practical Steps

Simple steps that make a big difference:

• Keep records of transfers between spouses (including purpose and date)
• Clarify who owns which accounts, in writing, if possible
• Review pension statements annually and keep them organized by year
• Revisit U.S. filing elections yearly, what worked last year may not work now
• Get tax advice before buying property together, not after
• Consider a postnuptial agreement clarifying asset ownership for tax purposes
• Set calendar reminders for FBAR (April 15) and Form 8938 (tax return deadline)

For one, it's that unique cable car. I've ridden dozens of cable cars in Switzerland, but the Stanserhorn CabriO remains the one I tell friends about first.

Launched in 2012, the CabriO is a double-decker aerial cable car. The lower deck is enclosed like any normal cabin, but the upper deck is completely open to the elements.

On the upper deck, which is reachable by a flight of stairs, there is literally no roof and no windows, just a railing that protects you from tumbling off. Up to 60 passengers can stand on top, but I've never seen more than two dozen. The ride from the middle station at Kälti (1,220 m) to the summit takes about six minutes.

What makes it so special is that rush you get from being out in the open air. You glide just above a meadow for the first stretch, and then the ground suddenly drops away and you're hanging high above the valley floor...

The wind picks up, the views explode in every direction, and you pass between the massive support masts close enough to feel the scale of the engineering. There are no cables overhead blocking your view, just open sky!

The first time I rode the upper deck, I made the mistake of wearing a baseball cap. It nearly flew off somewhere over Nidwalden! Lesson learned... But I also couldn't stop grinning the entire way up!

Let's start with the obvious: the views are staggering. From the summit terrace you can see Lake Lucerne, the Bernese Alps (including the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau), and no less than 10 Swiss lakes.

On exceptionally clear days, you can even see as far as the Black Forest in Germany and the Vosges in France. Including Switzerland, that's three countries from one terrace!

I've stood up there on a cloudless October morning and counted mountain peaks until I lost track. The 100-kilometer alpine chain stretching across the horizon never gets old.

And here's a tip I picked up from a local: don't skip a cloudy day too quickly.

Especially in autumn, it may be foggy in the valley but brilliantly sunny above the clouds at the summit. Check the Stanserhorn webcam before you go. Rising above a sea of clouds is one of the most magical experiences you can have here...

The Marmot Colony

One of the funnest surprises on the Stanserhorn is the colony of Alpine marmots living near the summit. Yes, there are live, chubby, curious yet semi-wild marmots all over the summit.

You can often spot them sunbathing on rocks, or hear their distinctive warning whistles echoing across the meadow.

Mamiko and I once spent nearly an hour just sitting quietly near the marmot area, watching them pop in and out of their burrows. (It was oddly meditative.)

The best time to see marmots? Morning and late afternoon, especially on warm sunny days. They hibernate from October to April, so visit in summer for the best chances.

Talk to the Stanserhorn Rangers

Something most visitors walk right past: the Stanserhorn rangers who are often stationed near the summit and are happy to chat. (In English, too!)

On one visit, a ranger pointed out a golden eagle circling above the ridge that I would have completely missed. They know the mountain intimately and can tell you about the local wildlife, geology, and weather patterns. Don't be shy and say grüezi :-)

• Early morning (first cable car up) gives you the clearest views. Clouds and haze tend to build in the afternoon.

• Avoid Swiss school holidays if you dislike crowds (mid-July to mid-August).
• September to October is underrated. The light turns golden, the air is crisp, and you might rise above a sea of valley fog into pure sunshine.

Stanserhorn is very family-friendly. On one visit I watched a group of kids completely lose their minds over the marmots. They spent a solid hour crouched by the rocks, whispering and pointing every time one popped up.

• The revolving restaurant is a fun novelty for kids (and adult kids)

Accessibility

• The funicular and lower deck of the CabriO are wheelchair accessible.
• The summit terrace and restaurants are accessible, too.
• Hiking trails are generally not suitable for wheelchairs. But it seems like a stretch of the summit walk may be accessible. It's best to check with Stanserhorn beforehand.

My honest take: If you only have time for one mountain near Lucerne, the Stanserhorn gives you the most unique experience. The CabriO exists nowhere else in the world, the crowds are a fraction of what you'll find on Pilatus, and the combination of the vintage funicular and the open-air cable car is something you simply can't replicate elsewhere.

Pilatus has more dramatic terrain, and Rigi is better for sunrise stays. But for a day trip that feels genuinely special, the Stanserhorn wins IMO.

But if you have multiple days, visit all three. And if you have even more time in Central Switzerland, add the epic full-day Tell Trail hike from Stanserhorn to Engelberg.

About Public Toilets in Switzerland

Switzerland does not have one single toilet system. Essentially, there are three types of toilets available in this small country - not counting Mother Nature. Understanding which system you are dealing with saves time and stress.

Paid Train Station Toilets in Switzerland

"Why is there a fee to use toilets in train stations?" This is a question I hear often. Well, Swiss station toilets charge fees because they are genuinely staffed and maintained to a high standard.

You'll notice that attendants clean these facilities constantly, wiping down surfaces after every use. Some locations offer showers, baby-changing rooms, and accessible facilities.

The fee is typically CHF 1 to CHF 1.50, so I think it's a legitimate fee for what you're getting. At Zurich HB, the McClean facilities on the in-between level by the lockers also offers showers for CHF 12 and family changing rooms. They are run by Vebego AG.

Accessible toilets with are free of charge for those with a Eurokey.

The Eurokey Offers Free Access for People with Disabilities

Speaking of which: The Eurokey is a universal key used across Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and several other European countries. It opens:

• Dedicated accessible toilet cubicles at public facilities and train stations
• Accessible lifts in public buildings
• Accessible parking barriers
• Some changing rooms and rest areas

The key fits around 12'000 locks across Europe. In Switzerland, you can order one through Pro Infirmis (+41 58 775 31 08) or via the official Eurokey website. The cost is approximately CHF 25 to CHF 30.

Pre-Loaded Toilet Entry Card

For those of you who don't carry cash, I can highly recommend buying a toilet entry card. These are available in Selecta vending machines near any major station toilet.

The card comes preloaded with CHF 1, CHF 1.50 or CHF 15 of credit. Swipe its magnetic strip at the reader and the door opens. The card is valid for five years and works across all SBB-managed station toilets in Switzerland. It costs the same as paying directly. I carry this card in my wallet because I don't usually have change when I need it...

Free Station Toilets with the Swiss Travel Pass

Here's a very cool, and likely most underused tip for accessing public toilets in Switzerland.

If you hold a valid Swiss Travel Pass or a valid SBB train ticket, you can scan it at the entry gate of most major station toilets for free access.

The pass also gets you free entry into museums - and museum lobbies almost always have clean, accessible toilets. The Bern History Museum, the Museum of Art and History in Geneva, and the Swiss National Museum in Zurich are just a few museums you could enter for free to use the toilet facilities.
